SPIRITUAL WARFARE CONFERENCE
Nativity will again be the setting for the third annual Spiritual
Warfare Conference. This year’s conference will again feature
Father Gary Thomas as the principal speaker. He is the Exorcist
for the Diocese of San Jose and his training was featured in the
movie “The Rite.” Joining him will be Patrick Madrid and Jim
Burnham, both very well-known personalities on Catholic Radio.
As usual, we remind everyone that life is a spiritual battle for souls.
Through the grace from Jesus through His Catholic Church, we
have all that is necessary to win this war. Your attendance at this

THE SEVEN FOUNDERS OF
THE ORDER OF SERVITES (1233)
On the Feast of the Assumption in 1240, the Founders received a
vision of Our Lady. She held in her hand a black habit, and a nearby
angel bore a scroll reading Servants of Mary. Mary told them, “You
will found a new order, and you will be my witnesses throughout
the world. This is your name: Servants of Mary. This is your rule:
that of Saint Augustine. And here is your distinctive sign: the black
scapular, in memory of my sufferings.” By
1285 there were 10,000 members with houses
in Germany, France, Italy, and Spain. The
Seven Founders are Saint Alexis Falconieri,
Saint Bartholomew degli Amidei, Saint
Benedict dell’Antella, Saint Buonfiglio
Monaldi, Saint Gherardino Sostegni, Saint

THE CHAIR OF SAINT PETER, Apostle
The feast of the Chair of Saint Peter at Antioch, commemorating
his foundation of the See of Antioch, has also been long celebrated
at Rome, in addition to a similar feast on 18 January, celebrating
the first Mass over which Peter presided in Rome. At each place
a chair (cathedra) is venerated which the Apostle had used while
presiding at Mass. This feast is emblematic of the world unity of
the Church.

“Presidents” Day? Not really... In 1796, the country first celebrated the birthday of George Washington. In 1866, Congress
gathered to remember Abraham Lincoln on 12 FEB, but although
many states began to celebrate his birthday as a holiday, it was
never made into a national holiday. In 1885, Chester A. Arthur
made Washington’s birthday (22 FEB) an official national holiday.
In 1968, Congress passed legislation to move the observance of
Washington’s birthday from 22 FEB to “the third Monday in February” -- this went into effect in 1971. While many people think
Washington’s and Lincoln’s birthday observances were combined
at that time, the Congressional decree still officially refers to this
as Washington’s birthday.
The Infant Jesus of Prague Prayer Society invites parishioners
and guests to join in prayer before our Infant Jesus shrine on
17 FEB 2014 at 01:00 PM. Each month, on the 17th day, we
begin the first day of the Infant Jesus of Prague Novena, a litany,
prayer intentions/thanksgivings, and conclude with adoration.

NATURAL FAMILY PLANNING OVERVIEW CLASS
Beginning on 15 February 2014 Nativity will be offering monthly
classes on Natural Family Planning (NFP). This class will give an
overview of the benefits of NFP, which is based on up-to-date
science and is individualized for every couple. It works with
the body’s natural rhythm and increases respect for the couple’s
fertility as God designed it. NFP is an investment in your marriage
which you don’t want to be without. The divorce rate for couples
who use NFP is lower than the average. All engaged and married
couples are welcome. Couples who are to be married at Nativity
are required to take this class. The class is conducted by Finola
Glassmoyer, a registered nurse, who has been teaching NFP for
many years. The hour-long class is held in the O’Hare Center and
begins at 09:00 AM. For more information and to register for this

‘THEOLOGY OF THE BODY’ STUDY GROUP
Are you looking to deepen your understanding of Catholic teaching
on love and marriage, sexual ethics and Christian virtue, and share
that knowledge with others? Joan Frawley Desmond will lead a
six-session study group on Blessed John Paul II’s revolutionary
teaching at Church of the Nativity beginning Thursday, 13
February 2014 from 07:00-08:30 PM in the O’Hare Center.
The Nativity group will use the study guide, “A New Language:
John Paul II’s Theology of the Body,” which has been used in over
20 U.S. dioceses, and in Europe and Latin America.

PARKING IN THE RED ZONE
Several parishioners have received parking tickets
lately from the Menlo Park Police Department for
parking in the red zones at the entrance and exit
driveways of the Church. For everyone’s safety and compliance
with the vehicle code, please do not park in these areas. It is very
difficult for emergency trucks and equipment to enter and exit
when cars are parked there.

SMALL FAITH-SHARING GROUPS
The Spring session of the Small Faith-Sharing Groups will begin
the week of 03 March 2014. One group will begin meeting on
Wednesday, 05 March 2014 at 01:00 PM in the O’Hare Center.
A second group will begin on Thursday, 06 March 2014 at 07:30
PM in the library at Nativity School. These two groups will meet
for six weekly sessions. The resource material for this next season
will include prayers, reflections on the Sunday readings, faith
sharing questions, and ideas for action responses. An ongoing
group meets at 11:00 AM on Thursdays in the O’Hare Center
and everyone is welcome to join. Please call Tim Kennedy at

MARRIAGE ON FIRE:
THE GREAT MARRIAGE CHALLENGE
Greg and Julie Alexander, the authors of the book Marriage
911 and EWTN co- hosts of “Marriage Works in Christ,” will
give a two-hour (07:00-09:00 PM) presentation on their personal
testimony while including teachings of the Catholic Church on
marriage, citing statistical data on the state of marriage and a call
to action for the participants. Their presentation is this area will be

On 15-16 March 2014, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul seeks

WEDDING ANNIVERSARY MASS
There will be an anniversary Mass this year honoring all those
couples who are celebrating an anniversary of marriage during
2013 that is a multiple of five years (5, 10, 15, etc.), particularly

Archbishop Cordileone at 10:00 AM on Saturday, 22 February
2014, at Saint Mary’s Cathedral, 1111 Gough Street, San

Time of the Easter Vigil
The Revised Roman Missal states: “The entire celebration of the
Easter Vigil must take place during the night, so that it begins after
nightfall and ends before daybreak on the Sunday.” Nightfall can
be determined by various calculations, and it changes from year
to year as the date of Easter changes. The rubric that the Vigil be
held at night not only conforms to the ancient practice of vigilling
throughout the night, but also reflects the imagery and references
throughout the prayers and rituals of the Easter Vigil celebration.
To light the fire and Paschal Candle and use lighted candles to
process makes little sense if done in a church where everyone can
see each other and the new lights make no impact to dispel the
darkness.
As the Exultet states:
Therefore, O Lord, we pray you that by this candle,
hallowed to the honor of your name, may persevere undimmed,
to overcome the darkness of this night.
Archbishop Cordileone has directed that on the night of 19
April 2014 the Easter Vigil may begin at 08:30 PM or anytime
thereafter.
ABSTINENCE: Everyone fourteen years of age and older
is bound to abstain from meat on ASH WEDNESDAY, the
FRIDAYS of Lent and GOOD FRIDAY.
FAST: Everyone eighteen years of age and older but under the
age of sixty is also bound to fast on ASH WEDNESDAY and
GOOD FRIDAY.
On these two days, the law of fast allows only one full meal a day,
but does not prohibit taking some food during the day, so long as
this does not constitute another full meal. Drinking liquids during
the day is permitted. When health or ability to work would be
seriously affected, the law does not oblige.

YOUTH MISSION TRIP 2014
Spend one week of your summer, 20-26 July 2014, in South Texas
changing lives. All high school students (or all students ages 14
to 19) are welcome. We’ll be rebuilding homes and communities
with the physical work we do, but more importantly, we’ll also be
touching hearts, offering hope, and sharing God’s love as we serve
impoverished communities. Mornings and evenings will include

LIVES OF THE SAINTS: Blessed Noel Pinot
Born: 1747
Died: 21 FEB 1794

WHAT THE WORLD WAS LIKE
Blessed Noel Pinot lived during a time of great political change
throughout the world. The monarchy collapsed during the
French Revolution. America gained its independence from
Britain and signed the Declaration of Independence. The
British industrial revolution began. Scientific discoveries were
made, such as photosynthesis and modern chemistry.
WHAT THE SAINT MEANS TO US
Noel Pinot lived during a time of great struggle and
change in France. However, his faith remained strong. He
knew he was putting his life in danger, but he continued
to celebrate Mass for his parishioners anyway. The life
of Blessed Noel Pinot teaches us the importance of
staying true to our beliefs even when it is hard to do so.
Young Believers
WHO HE WAS
Blessed Noel Pinot was born and grew up in France. He
dedicated his life to God. He was ordained a priest and served
as a pastor for many years. This was during the time of the
French Revolution. The people leading this revolt wanted to
separate the Church of France from the pope. Noel had been
a pastor for two years when this law was passed. Noel believed
that breaking off from the pope was wrong. He refused to
take the oath supporting the new law, and was exiled from his
church. He was not even allowed to come within eight miles
of it.
During his exile, Noel continued to help his parishioners in
secret. He also encouraged other priests to stay true to
the pope and not take the oath. Unfortunately, one of Noel’s
parishioners betrayed him. The person told the police how
Noel was disobeying the government. When Noel was about to
say Mass one Sunday, the police came and arrested him. They
held him in prison for a week and tortured him, trying to get
him to take the oath. When the police realized that Noel would
not give in to their wishes, he was sentenced to death. Even
while he was led to his death, he repeated the beginning lines
of Mass: “I will go in to the altar of God, to God who gives joy
to my youth.”
