School Concessions is serving kraut burgers. And we're
excited to bring you our new CQC Country Store. SO
many new and exciting features that you won’t want to
miss Quilt-a-Fair this year.
Do you remember Tim Latimer’s program last May
in Ft. Morgan or did you miss it like I did? I heard we
missed another tremendous trunk show and lecture
Bring Love and Life to an Old Quilt. We're bringing
him back...you can spend three days working with
Tim to transform an old quilt or blocks you own, into
something new and spectacular. We still have spaces
available in his class. Three days of discovery and fun,
Wed–Fri for $225.00.
We also have rooms awaiting your reservation at the
Best Western in Longmont at a reduced rate of $109.00
a night. There isn't a limit on people in a room, so you
can come to Longmont and Quilt-a-Fair and have a
fabulous weekend with your family and friends.
If you want to see Tim and can’t make the class, you
can come to Tim’s lecture with dinner, Friday night.
Come and see Tim’s trunk show of transformed quilts
and hear his stories. Dinner is at 6:00pm and lecture at
7:00pm. Tickets are $55.00. Tickets must be purchased
in advance. I can hardly wait to hear about and see these
wonderfully enriched quilts.
Registration Forms can be
sent to Mary Rush and are
available on pages 10–11 of
the newsletter or on our CQC
website.
Yours in Shopping,
At Quilt-a-Fair, we will display a beautiful Member

process. Learn how to plan a piecing strategy, and
accurately piece acute angles and curves using ML’s

Polish Your Piecing is a hands-on class where each
student will be piecing three of Mary Louise’s original
blocks, plus small samples. Using the cut fabric in the
kit, students learn tips and tricks to ensure an accurate
¼" seam and piecing sharp angles and curves without
paper foundations. Mary Louise will provide cut
fabric so students can spend class time sewing and not
preparing templates and cutting fabric, though those
topics will be discussed. Handouts will be provided for
notes and future reference. Full Day, Kit Fee: $15

Jeananne Wright &

at
Quilt-a-Fair
Thu, Sept 22
Kindred Spirits–Alluring Ancestral Quilts
to Matisse Art Quilts
as some older pieces from her premiere collection to
share with us. Jeananne has been featured in Quilters’
Newsletter, and is one of the contributors for Colorado
Quilting, From Mountain to Plains.
Jeananne Wright and Patty Hawkins will team up to
treat us to their “old and new” lecture, Kindred Spirits—
Alluring Ancestral Quilts to Matisse Art Quilts, to kick off
this year’s Quilt-a-Fair with a dessert reception at 6:30p,
followed by a 7:00p lecture in the Longmont Conference
Center. These two incredible Colorado women have
probably forgotten more about quilts than most of us
can ever hope to know. They have a special delight for
us in their parallel exploration of the full gamut of the
quilting world.
Patty is a well-known textile artist who lectures and
teaches all over the country. Patty, inspired by quilts
of Nancy Crow and Michael James, later began
incorporating dye marking and paints in her abstract
art quilts. She has won numerous awards, she’s been
featured on “The Quilt Show,” and was the Artist in
Residence for the Rocky Mountain National Park. Like
many of us, her first sewing lessons were with her mother,
but Patty has taken it to glorious heights. (Cost: $37 for
the Wright/Hawkins’ dessert lecture. See the website for
other Quilt-a-Fair options and lodging.)
Jeananne is a noted collector and certified Quilt
Appraiser. She started making her dolls’ clothes out of
feedsacks at the age of 7. Since 2007, she has made
70 quilts using blocks from the 30s, 40s, and 50s; setting
them together in unusual ways with feedsacks and other
“common threads”. She will have some of them, as well
Enrollment opens immediately for this first ever Quilt-a-Fair lecture, September 22nd. Space is

Sept 21–23
Bring Love and Life to an Old Quilt
It is said that old houses that need restoring are in need of some
love. The same thing is true for old and unfinished quilts.
If you have such a treasure and need help deciding what kind of loving
it needs, CQC has an answer for you. Quilt rescuer, Tim Latimer, is
coming to Quilt-a-Fair to present a brand new class for us.
WORKSHOP
day 1
Analyze your quilt. Begin with
a vintage quilt, an unfinished top,
a collection of blocks made by
your grandmother, etc.
“Fix” it. Discuss and discover
possibilities to come away with a
new quilt recreation.
day 2/3
Work begins on your quilt with
Tim’s guidance and direction.
Technique demos. Tim will share
his knowledge and help you
along the way.
Tim’s amazing work has been featured in the Rocky Mountain Quilt
Museum’s “Male Call” shows three times (2012, 2014 and 2016). He
won 2nd Place in the Viewers’ Choice award in 2016.
His work has also appeared in the Quilters’ Newsletter and AQS
publications and other shows. Tim’s quilts won AQS awards in 2013
for Best Hand Workmanship (Grand Rapids) and 2016 for Best Use of
DINNER &
TRUNK SHOW
Friday evening, Tim will speak
about and present his work. This
is a “not to be missed” evening,
so join us.
Color (Lancaster). His quilts will be hanging in many other shows this
year, so there will certainly be new recognitions coming.
Enrollment opens immediately for this first ever Quilt-a-Fair
class, September 21, 22, and 23. Space is limited to 15 people,
CQC members only. Attached registration forms should be sent to:
Rescuing a quilt is time consuming
and requires some “down and dirty”
work. Tackling your own rescue
operation with Tim’s guidance gives
you a great start to finish many
projects on your own. End up with a
great story and a treasure to share
with family and friends.

Beth Leidy, Old Fashioned
Flower Garden was made in
1937 by Myrtie Manchester
Leidy McGraw as a wedding
gift to William Leonard Leidy
and Jennie Victoria Jacox Leidy.
It is hand quilted. Myrtie lived
in Inman, Nebraska. Leonard
and Jennie moved to Glenwood
Springs, Colorado in 1941. That
is how the quilt came to Colorado.
Marian Pierce "Open a New
Window" This quilt won the
People's Choice at 2016 LaPlata
County Fair. The wood seems to
draw wonder and is thanks to
David Taylor and his sharing of
his creative genius!!! This is from
a photo of Mt. Wilson taken by
me in 1984 from an old miner's
cabin at Alta Lakes. The quilting
was done on a Handi Quilter
sweet 16 sitdown midarm, and a
Bernina 830 using Superior's King
Tut, YLI, and Sulky Blendables
threads, again using David
Taylor’s technique of matching the
bobbin thread to the top thread.
The title is from a song "Open a
New Window" about living life
fully..."the fizz doesn't fizz too
long!"
Susan Smith, Joy to the World
Each figure took 10 to 20 hours
to make. Each figure is made with
felt, hand sewn and embroidered.
There are several figures
representing a Swedish skier, a
Hungarian/Greek dance couple,
Mexican girl and her white pony,
etc.
Noel Tambre, Star Flowers (71"

in August 2014.

Thank you, Karen Brown, for helping me the past
couple of months. Karen has taken the quilt to Durango
and to Breckenridge for the general meetings and has
sold tickets at those events.
Many of you know me from my previous years on the
board, first with membership and then Programs in 2013. I
most recently organized the quilt show at the Denver Public
Library. I have worked on Quilt Colorado and Quilt-a-Fair.
I have agreed to run for Programs in 2018 as I love CQC
and love finding interesting, entertaining speakers. Is there
someone you wish to hear speak, let me know and I will see
what I can do! I learned to sew and quilt as a kid, and have
been sewing ever since. I make garments, art pieces, and
contemporary bed quilts.
I need volunteers to help sell raffle tickets at Quilt-a-Fair
in September. If you can volunteer for a couple of hours
during those days, please contact me. I will put you on
the list. Thank you for your help. You can call or email
me.

Kid's Corner
5. Turn right side out and stitch opening closed. Press.
Sew a long basting stitch about 1" from the folded
edge, with a second line of stitching ¼" away.
6. Pull up the bottom threads to gather the strip.
7. Fold the 11" × 12" piece you cut from the strip in
half with the right sides together making a piece
6" × 11". Press. Stitch along three sides leaving
an opening to turn. Turn right side out. Press. Stitch
opening closed. This is your pocket.
8. Place the pocket on the shaped dish towel: Center
the pocket and place the bottom edge 7" above
the bottom of the dish towel. Pin and topstitch in
place along sides and bottom of the pocket. Topstitch down the center of the pocket creating two
compartments.
9. Place the ruffle along the bottom edge of the
dish towel with the top of the ruffle 4½" from the
bottom edge of the towel. Top-stitch along the
gathering lines with a zigzag stitch.
Dish Towel Apron
Supplies:
One dish towel (18" × 27")
½ yard of coordinating fabric
Ric rac trim (optional)
10.Cut two strips, 3½" wide across the width of the
remaining coordinating fabric. Seam these strips
together end-to-end to make one long strip. Fold
the strip in half lengthwise and press. From this
strip, cut a piece 28" long to make the neck loop.
Stitch along the long edge and turn right side out.
Instructions:
11.Fold the ends under and sew to the top corners of
the dish towel. You can pinch a little pleat in the
strip to make it a bit more narrow.
1. Shape the dishtowel: first measure and mark
from the corner, down the long sides about 10".
Measure and mark along one short side 5" from
the corner. Place your ruler connecting the two
marks and cut off the corners on one end of the
dish towel.
12.Cut the remaining long folded strip in half to make
the ties. Sew along the long edge and to a point
on one end. Turn right side out. Turn inside the
short raw edges and attach to the dish towel at
the waist corners.
2. Turn the raw edges under and stitch in place.
3. From coordinating fabric, cut a strip 11" wide
across the width of the fabric. Cut the selvages off,
and cut a 12" piece from one end of the strip.
13.Add a little ric rac trim to the top of the apron
and ruffle, if desired. Lay the ric rac over the
gathering stitches and fold the ends of the ric
rac around to the back of the apron. Top-stitch in
place. Place the upper ric rac about ½" from the
top edge of the apron.
4. Fold the long strip in half lengthwise, right sides
together. Press. Stitch along the three sides in a ¼"
seam, leaving an opening to turn.

Brief History of Quilting Why Quilts Matter –
Throughout history, people have enjoyed quilts for many
different reasons. Quilts can provide clues to the past.
Quilts can provide warmth. Quilts can provide beauty
and value. Quilts can provide heritage. Quilts can
provide enjoyment from working with color, texture, and
pattern.
Quilting can be traced back to ancient Egypt and China
where three layers of fabrics (top, batting for warmth,
and backing) were stitched together to keep the middle
layer from slipping and clumping.
Later in the 11th century, quilting was used to hold
together the layers of padding under armor. From then
on quilting was a common form of needle work.
In the 18th century, it was stylish for English women to
wear quilted petticoats and underskirts and for men
to wear quilted waistcoats. Quilted bedding was also
popular. Quilts were first brought to the American
Colonies during this century.
There are only written references of the first American
quilts. These quilts were probably styled after English
quilts. The first American quilts were probably not
patchwork or appliqué but whole cloths.
Quilting in American became popular in the 19th Century
when distinctly American patchwork and appliqué
designs were created. These quilts were produced for
utility and pleasure and are the inspiration for today's
quilters. They are also an important part of American
Folk Art.
From the 1940s to the 1970s, quilting was not a regular
pastime for America. Since 1976, quilting has again
become popular.
From—Fons, Marianne and Porter, Liz, "Quilter's Complete Guide".
Birmingham: Oxmoor House, Inc., and Leisure Arts, Inc., 1993. 8-9.
with Mary Fons
Quilts are works of art, objects made
with care and love that we use every day
of our lives in innumerable ways. We cry
on them, marvel at them; pour
creativity and artistry into
them. We decorate our
homes with them, and
have picnics on top
of them. For a long
time in this country,
a quilt welcomed you
at birth and when you
died, you were put in
the ground in a quilt.
Not many objects have
such power—do any have
as much soul? We use quilts
in all of these varied applications, they
become almost like family members…
and then we have the glorious ability to
stick the things in the washing machine
when they need it. I’m telling you: perfect
objects. Functional art. Brilliant.
I make quilts because I love to design
them, I love to write about them, I love
to have them photographed, and I love to
give them away. Shame on me if I have an
enormous stack of quilts at any given time.
They should be used. Yes, even the really,
really special ones. I make bed-sized
quilts, for the most part. Quilts are for
people, not closets! There’s a Jewish saying
that one should “give till it hurts.” I think
about that when I’m really having a hard
time parting with a quilt. I think, “Give till
it hurts,” and I give the quilt to someone
I love to use and enjoy. I never regret it
because I know it has a good home.

Saying Thank
You to Heroes
How do you thank someone who has
risked their life for you? Somehow, words
just don’t seem adequate, so people may
look for other options. Members of the
Longmont Quilt Guild’s “Bee Sew Brave”
(BSB) group have found one way. They
use their talents to create patriotic quilts
that honor military personnel who have
been injured while serving our country. It’s the group’s way of saying “thank you” to the brave men and women who put
their lives on the line to protect us.
BSB is a group of approximately 20 quilters of all skill levels, coming together for a shared purpose. Members work
both independently and as a group to make quilts using patriotic-themed fabrics, that are presented to returning heroes.
BSB members meet monthly to update each other on their quilting progress, to share ideas, and to plan for future events.
Once the quilts are finished, most are donated to the Quilts of Valor Foundation, a national program whose purpose
is “to cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor.” BSB works
specifically with the Northern Colorado Chapter of the QOV Foundation, which distributes the quilts to recipients within
the state of Colorado.
Three years ago the BSB group also began a partnership with the Challenge Aspen Military Outreach (CAMO) program,
that provides “professional adaptive instruction for military personnel who have been diagnosed with cognitive and/or
physical disabilities.” Each February CAMO sponsors the
“Estes Park Nordic Ski & Snowshoe Adventure,” a week
of outdoor sports and wellness sessions. At the end of
the week, BSB members travel to Estes Park to present
each retreat participant with a keepsake patriotic quilt,
made especially for them. The presentations are an
emotional experience for everyone involved, a chance
to touch each others’ lives in a very special and personal
way.
HANDWEAVERS GUILD
OF BOULDER
This year BSB members decided to try something new.
They challenged each other to create patriotic quilts
that include one common fabric (white stars on a red
background). Each member’s design is unique, but every
quilt features that specific fabric somewhere in it. And
the results are very impressive!
SALE&SHOW
The BSB challenge quilts will be on display during
the Longmont Quilt Guild’s Fantabulous Quilt Show
With Boutique, Friday, October 14, 1:00–8:00p and
Saturday, October 15, 9:00a–5:00p, in Barn A of the
Boulder County Fairgrounds in Longmont.
SPINNING, WEAVING, AND TEXTILE ART DEMONSTRATIONS
JURIED SHOWCASE OF ARTISAN-CREATED WORK
In addition to the patriotic quilts, the Quilt Show will
feature over 100 other quilts made by Longmont Quilt
Guild members; a boutique of quilts and handcrafted
items for sale; an exhibit of antique quilts, narrated by
noted quilt historian Jeananne Wright; vendor booths;
and much more! Admission to the Quilt Show is $5;
children under 12 are free; there is no charge to shop in
the Boutique. Visit www.longmontquiltguild.org for more
information and a discount admission coupon.

Our Newest
Hall of Fame Member
By now you have probably seen a pattern
developing for our Hall of Fame recipients for
2016. Many hours of volunteer time spent on not
just one area, but many. Not for just one year,
but for many years.
Our third inductee is another volunteer who has
taken the call to serve time and time again.
She has been innovative in the restructure of
how many of our committees are run and as
a chairperson of those committees, in making
changes that benefit the CQC membership. She
is not afraid to try new ideas and concepts. She
has returned to the Board to help in its running
smoothly and continues to serve when called.
You name it, she’s
been involved
in it one way or
another.
Please join me
in welcoming
our Hall of
Fame inductee:
