PETER The Cathedral of Saint Peter is celebrating its 200th anniversary this year. This beautiful and historic church is in need of our help. The weekend of August 20 & 21, a special collection for the maintenance and preservation of the Cathedral of Saint Peter will be taken up in all parishes in our diocese. Please be as generous as you can. For more information, including a letter from Bishop Malooly, a message from the Cathedral’s Administrator and a video tour of the Cathedral, go to www.cdow.org. OUR FATHER IN FAITH The Letter to the Hebrews today sings a hymn of praise to Abraham and to his faith, upon which are founded the religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Abraham is called "father" in faith by more people on earth than anybody else, numerous as the sands of the seashore or the stars of the heavens. Hebrews tells us it was this foundational faith that led Abraham to obey God's call when he heard it, though he was called to journey to a land he did not know and told he would father a mighty race through a marriage he thought was barren. But Abraham's faith, the author of Hebrews tells us, was his realization of what he hoped for, and the evidence of what he could not see. How often are we, in simple daily events of our own Christian vocation, called to an unfamiliar place or told we are to do something we do not believe we can? How fortunate we are to have Father Abraham as our guide and example! The Word in Our Lives: Readings for August 14, 2016 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading: Jeremiah 38:4-6, 8-10 In those days, the princes said to the king: “Jeremiah ought to be put to death; he is demoralizing the soldiers who are left in this city, and all the people, by speaking such things to them; he is not interested in the welfare of our people, but in their ruin.” King Zedekiah answered: “He is in your power”; for the king could do nothing with them. And so they took Jeremiah and threw him into the cistern of Prince Malchiah, which was in the quarters of the guard, letting him down with ropes. There was no water in the cistern, only mud, and Jeremiah sank into the mud. Ebed-melech, a court official, went there from the palace and said to him: “My lord king, these men have been at fault in all they have done to the prophet Jeremiah, casting him into the cistern. He will die of famine on the spot, for there is no more food in the city.” Then the king ordered Ebed-melech the Cushite to take three men along with him, and draw the prophet Jeremiah out of the cistern before he should die. Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 40:2, 3, 4, 18 Second Reading: Hebrews 12:1-4 Brothers and sisters: Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us rid ourselves of every burden and sin that clings to us and persevere in running the race that lies before us while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the leader and perfecter of faith. For the sake of the joy that lay before him he endured the cross, despising its shame, and has taken his seat at the right of the throne of God. Consider how he endured such opposition from sinners, in order that you may not grow weary and lose heart. In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding blood. Gospel: Luke 12:49-53 Jesus said to his disciples: “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing! There is a baptism with which I must be baptized, and how great is my anguish until it is accomplished! Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. From now on a household of five will be divided, three against two and two against three; a father will be divided against his son and a son against his father, a mother against her daughter and a daughter against her mother, a mother-in-law against her daughter -in-law and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.” VOCATIONS REFLECTION Today’s second reading reminds us that “by faith Abraham obeyed when he was called.” Sometime we have an inkling that God might be calling us to something, but we’re either afraid or we’ve already decided that we want something else. In the end, though, how can we really find satisfaction or fulfillment unless we’re doing what God created us to do? Are you being called to priesthood or religious life? If you think so, be not afraid – let’s try to listen more clearly for God’s gentle voice. Call or write Father Norm Carroll, Diocesan Director of Priestly and Religious Vocations (302-573-3113, [email protected]). And be sure to visit our website: www.cdow.org/vocations! BEREAVEMENT FACILITATORS NEEDED We are in need of more facilitators to join our Seasons of Hope team to facilitate our weekly sessions beginning October, 2016. No Experience is necessary. If you have a compassionate heart, willing to listen and can make the commitment, we want to hear from you. Bereavement is a rewarding ministry and a great act of mercy towards those who are mourning. For information, please contact Father Timothy Brady or Dee Headley at 302-378-5800. This is a separate process from Religious Education class registration and has a separate schedule and fee. St. Joseph Parish has one of the largest Religious Education programs in our diocese. Sunday, August 14 1:00 PM—Misa en Español in St. Joseph Church We are blessed with many, many catechists who are willing to share their faith with our children. As our program grows, we are always in need of volunteers and gratefully welcome any parent that is willing to share their time and talent. Please contact Mary Kirk in the Religious Education office, 302.378.5800, ext. 107 or via email at [email protected] if you are interested in learning more about this ministry. PLEASE NOTE Children must be with an adult when they leave the worship place during mass. Our ushers have been instructed to send children back to their parents. This is for the safety of your children. In the Gospel this week, Jesus reminds us to be watchful, and to remember the reward awaiting us. We can be watchful by living in a moral and obedient way. Bring It Home by asking each family member, “If Jesus came to the door today, would you (and He) be pleased with your actions and choices?” What can you do this week to be a watchful Christian witness? Pray more, seek or give forgiveness, or do something kind and loving? “COME AND SEE” John 1: 35-39 The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults team (RCIA), here at St. Joseph Parish cordially invites you to attend our “get acquainted” meeting with the Catholic Faith. This is an informal gathering and is a great way for those who have been considering becoming Catholic to get information. Is the Catholic Faith for you? Has a family member or friend continually asked you about our faith? POWER OF PRAYER Prayer is powerful…...do you have someone or something for which you would like prayers? You may phone the Parish Office or email your prayer requests to Kathy Dolde at [email protected] and they will pass them on to members of our Prayer Chain. Parishioners are also welcome to join our prayer group. All it involves is getting an email and praying for the person or petition. If you are interested, please contact Kathy. “COME AND SEE” Date: Sept. 6, 2016 7:00pm at the Parish Center Refreshments will be provided Bring a friend ~ All are welcome R.S.V.Ps Are Welcomed (302)378-5800 Fr. Tim Brady [email protected] or Deacon Tim Enright [email protected] PROBLEMS WITH GLUTEN? For quite some time, the Church has been concerned about those who have Celiac Sprue disease and other medical conditions that make it impossible for them to receive the host because of the gluten content. The Holy Father gave permission for the use of low-gluten hosts, but there was nowhere to obtain them in this country until recently. A convent of Benedictine Sisters in this country has begun production. Since permission is granted on an individual basis by the bishop, we would be glad to request this permission for anyone who has need. If you have a medical condition that makes it impossible for you to receive the regular host and would be able to receive one that is only .01% gluten (this is the minimal amount necessary for the host to be considered valid for the celebration of the Eucharist), please contact Fr. Kelley or Fr. Brady and they will make the necessary arrangements. PARENTING POINTERS "The weather this summer has been confusing at best. Whether it's been wetter or dryer, hotter or colder, in your part of this vast world, take advantage of whatever weather you have. Do silly things like walk in the rain, make mud pies, build sand castles, bundle up in blankets... Unusual experiences are memories that stick. MARRIAGE MOMENTS Natural or national disasters can bring out the best in humanity as we rally to help those in need. A marriage crisis can also prompt a couple to sacrifice for each other or honestly deal with a recurring problem. Don't wait for a disaster, however, to test your love. Prevention is better Social Concerns Christian Formation MINISTRY TO THOSE IN NEED Through your generosity, we received $347.55 from the Poor Box at St. Joseph last weekend. We received $120.00 from the Poor Box at St. Rose of Lima last weekend. ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY 302-463-6255 DEDICATED TO THE SERVICE OF THOSE IN NEED IN THE MOT AREA ELKTON COMMUNITY KITCHEN Our next date to serve at the Elkton Community Kitchen is Friday, August 12. CHESAPEAKE CITY ECUMENICAL ASSOCIATION A NOTE FROM CCEA The CCEA pantry had 16 families Wednesday morning come to pick up food and clothing. Some were there before the doors even opened. That many people in one day had an impact on our stock. The CCEA provides very generous food boxes with perishable, nonperishable food and personal care items. The CCEA is blessed with a dedicated food pantry staff. These dedicated individual not only donate their time and talent but also their treasure. If they see an item that is out of stock, they will bring in that item the next day they volunteer. Many of the food pantry and clothing area staff members volunteer multiple days a week. The CCEA could not function without our volunteers. Please keep them in your prayers. Please go to CCEA website at ccea4u.com for a complete list of items most needed at this time. Food can be dropped off at any of the CCEA Churches, Chesapeake City Town Hall, Chesapeake City Post Office, CCEA Complex at 227 Basil Avenue on Tuesday and Wednesday from 9:00AM to noon. Food items are collected the first weekend of the month at St. Joseph Church and St. Rose of Lima Church.
