A word from our Executive Director
In the first quarter Navigator, I wrote about how 50 North is always
looking to fully understand your needs as a path to continuous
improvement in the services we provide . To gain this understanding,
we conduct various studies and do research . An example is a
facility utilization study we conducted in the Fall of 2014 . This study,
conducted by an expert consulting firm funded through The
Community Foundation, included both a formal survey and meetings
with more than 300 members of the Hancock County community .
The number one recommendation coming from this study was
to change the name of our organization to better reflect who
we are and who we serve…especially going into the future . As
you know, we took action and changed our name to 50 North, a
decision we have already found to be highly beneficial.
This same research study also showed there is significant support
within Hancock County to consider further renovation and expansion
of our facilities with an emphasis on enlarging the fitness center.
Acting on this finding, the 50 North Board of Trustees charged
its Planning and Operations Committee to further evaluate and
carry out this recommendation . Since early 2015, this committee
has been gathering feedback from stakeholders to develop
concepts for a facility renovation and expansion and a local firm,
RCM Architects, Inc ., was retained . RCM has prepared conceptual
drawings for the renovation and expansion project and work is being
done to receive input from user groups to assess the direction
being taken .
As this process has been ongoing, 50 North also hired a market
research firm to conduct a sample survey of registered voters in
Hancock County . The aim of this particular survey, among other
topics, was to gauge the ‘appetite’ of Hancock County voters with
regard to a potential levy request to help fund the 50 North facility
renovation and expansion .
The results revealed the following…
• Overall, citizens believe it is very important for Hancock County
to offer its senior citizens a senior center and to provide services
such as mobile meals, chore services and minor home repairs,
as well as health and wellness and outreach services for information referrals .
• Two-thirds of the respondents are familiar with 50 North .
• 50 North has an overall positive image in the community .
• Nearly six in ten respondents have been to 50 North . The three
most important reasons for going to 50 North is to participate
in class/activity/program; to socialize and visit; and to eat a
good meal .
• Two-thirds of respondents agree that 50 North has been or will
be a valuable resource to them .
• More than two-thirds of the respondents were in favor of supporting
a senior levy in May, 2017 .
This gives us confidence that we are on the right track with our
services, and that our organization will be highly needed well
into the future as our population continues to age . Further, there
is definite support for a levy campaign in May 2017 that could
help fund the necessary renovation and expansion to meet the
growing needs of our community* .
With that said, we do not believe it is the taxpayers who should
shoulder the entire financial obligation for this potential expansion
and renovation project . Our Board of Trustees believes it is possible
that we could also generate donations through a capital campaign
that would target local companies and individuals . To test this
concept, 50 North recently received a grant from The Community
Foundation for yet another research project . We have engaged
the consulting firm of Aly Sterling Philanthropy to conduct a
feasibility study to assess the likelihood of a capital campaign
being successful . The Aly Sterling consultants will be talking with
key stakeholders in the community and gathering feedback to help
us assess the viability of such a campaign . We’ll report on the
findings in a future communication.
I recognize that I’ve talked about a lot of research and study being conducted, yet I want to be totally transparent with you about
what we are looking at and why . Furthermore, l want you to know
that 50 North remains committed to taking the pulse of our users
and our community at every important point in our evolution . We
look at our research studies as a primary way to make sure we
stay true to our mission and to continue to serve you . We cannot
do that if we don’t stop and listen from time to time to what you
and others have to say . We appreciate that you always speak
your minds and are not shy about sharing your thoughts . Only
through an open and honest dialog will we be able to best serve
you and the community at large . Thank you for being such caring
and involved partners as we grow!
*50 North continues to experience tremendous growth . More
than 500 new members have joined from January 1 through May
15 of this year . The age breakout for new members:

“A Christmas Story,” the musical, which received rave reviews
on its Broadway run and is based on the classic movie that runs

in the fictional town Hohman, Indiana, the musical follows 9-year
old Ralphie Parker, and his quest for the Holy Grail of Christmas
Gifts - an Official Red Ryder air rifle. All the iconic scenes from
the film are here, and the delightfully versatile score ranges from
gentle ballads to show-stopping ensemble numbers such as
“Ralphie to the Rescue,” “A Major Award,” “Sticky Situation,” and
the inevitable “You’ll Shoot Your Eye Out!” This musical will bring
an exciting new dimension to those who have seen the movie
and will certainly stand on its own for those who haven’t .
