Wacom (Wireless) Tablet

The Wacom Tablet is a computer input device that enables a user to hand-draw images and graphics,
similar to the way a person draws images with a pencil and paper. The tablet may also be used to
capture data or handwritten signatures. It can also be used to trace an image from a piece of paper
which is taped or otherwise secured to the surface. Capturing data in this way, either by tracing or
entering the corners of linear poly-lines or shapes is called digitizing.
For those using Photoshop the Wacom Tablet it is an absolute necessity as it allows working tightly
within the digital images and repairing, changing or modifying an image, even down to one pixel at a
time. I use my Wacom tablet almost daily in my graphic and photo work.
The device consists of a flat surface upon which the user may draw, trace or modify an image using a
stylus, a pen-like drawing apparatus. The image does not appear on the tablet itself but, rather, is
displayed on the computer monitor.
I purchased the initial v1.0 version of Photoshop back in late 1988 or 89. The software consisted of 11
small floppy discs for the installation. Shortly thereafter the Wacom Tablet was introduced and I have
used that first 4” X 5” tablet with a fixed tip stylus for lo these many years. A few months ago I
upgraded to the new Wacom Bamboo Capture CTH-470 tablet that now comes with an improved
stylus that offers 1024 pressure levels in the tip application to the tablet’s surface. The tablet and
included software is applicable to both a Mac and a PC. Additionally it comes with a free older version
of Photoshop Elements, perfect for those new to Photoshop to learn the basics and beyond of the
software’s capabilities. The current Photoshop Elements version 11 is excellent.
A new Wacom product that has really spoiled me is the Wireless Accessory Kit that allows a wireless
connection to your computer. The kit (shown in the photo on the right) consist of a rechargeable
battery and transmitter that easily installs into the Bamboo tablet. The CTH-470 operates for 15 hours
before requiring a recharge. The charger plugs into a USB port on your computer. The micro-size
receiver also plugs into a USB port on your computer providing a 30 foot operating range.

Apple Logo - How To

Some of you may have spotted the new Apple Q&A logo in a recent Apple Sauce newsletter
and wondered to yourself, “How’d he do that?”. The answer is fairly simple, but the first thing
to realize is the only place you’ll find a decent copy of an Apple logo is on a special type font
built within your Mac keyboard. Simply hold down your Option and Shift keys and type the
letter K, like this ....
I started the process by typing the logo (only) on a blank Text Edit sheet. Then highlighted the
Logo and selected the font size 144 to blow it up to a large size. Now the font is created on a
Text Edit .rtf format which is not recognized as a graphic image that’s necessary to allow
insertion of the Q&A letters. To convert this to a graphic image hold down your Shift,
Command and 4 keys. Your cursor will become a crosshair. Drag your crosshairs around the
image to enclose it into a box frame and let up on your mouse. This image will now be on your
desktop saved as a Screen Shot .png (graphic) file.
1. Preview Toolbar > File > Open the new Screen Shot logo image.
2. Preview Toolbar > View > Show Edit Toolbar
3. Preview Toolbar > Tools > Show Fonts...this window will allow you to select your font type,
color and size. (You can also readjust type size after you type in your text)

4. In the Edit toolbar select the Text Toolbox (It will turn from
black to blue when activated). Your cursor will turn into a
crosshair. Hold down the mouse and draw a box within the logo
and start typing. Now you can use your Fonts toolbox to change
font type, color and size. You can also click on the type and
move it around to place it wherever desired.

Empty out space-hogging Mail Downloads
Tip from Serenity Caldwell-Macworld Magazine
We all get quite a few attachments via email—PDFs, ePub ebooks, Word documents, images,
you name it. Most of the time we save those files to the desktop or the Downloads folder but on
occasion we make the mistake of double-clicking a file. When you do that the document saves
itself to your Mail Downloads folder hidden away in your Library file. Double-click enough files,
and that folder can balloon in size. That’s why you need to make sure you check it and empty it
every year or so.
The easiest way to do this is to use Spotlight—press Command-Space to see a search field
appear—and then type, Mail Downloads. Click the Top Hit, which should be the Mail
Downloads Data folder. If this isn’t working for you, try getting to it the long way. In the Finder,
select Go > Go to Folder. Type ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/
Library/Mail Downloads in the text field.
Click Go, and a Finder window will open showing the Mail Downloads folder.
Once you get to the folder, you can select all files and delete, or rescue the few files you want to
keep awhile in a more permanent location—say, the regular old Downloads folder.
Always read stuff that will make you look good if you die in the middle of it.

Mac App Store Catalog

After browsing for an hour or so searching for the simple way to locate a
special App within the App webpage and becoming frustrated at the lack of
a catalog, or yearning for a simple way to type in your needs in a search
box, be aware there is an Apps catalog available (Now he tells me!).
The Mac Apps Catalog literally lists thousands of Apps for a Mac. No page-after-page of fancy
icons in random order to search through, just a good old-fashioned printed catalog listing by the
App’s title.
The catalog’s left hand column currently lists twenty categories of Apps with hundreds of Apps
in each category. The Apps are displayed within each category page in random order according
to their popularity.
They can also be searched within category in alphabetical sequence by selecting the category
and then the A~Z listing in the catalogs heading.

Problems with New Computer
David purchased a new computer and ran into difficulties setting it up, so he called the
customer support phone number listed in the manual.
He explained the problem to the customer support guy who immediately began to rattle
off computer jargon, which only added to David's confusion.
"Excuse me, sir," David said, politely, "but could you explain what I should do as if I were
a small child?"
"Sure, no problem," replied the customer support guy. "Young man, could you please put
your mommy or daddy on the phone?"

Lost my iPhone and why doesn't “Find my iPhone” work

A friendly reminder: In order to use Find My iPhone Successfully, you need to
1. Turn on Location Services,
2. Lock Location Services (Using Restrictions in Settings, General, Restrictions) so that if
some one else finds your iPhone, they can NOT turn off Find My iPhone And/Or Location
Services itself!
3. Add your Mobile Me and/Or iCloud Account to your IPhone.
4. Lock Accounts (Again in Restrictions) from being changed or Deleted so that your Mobile
Me And/or iCloud Account can NOT be Deleted!
5. Look Up the Location of your iPhone Before Suspending Service to the iPhone, NOT after
Suspending Service (simple common sense applies here as well).

iOS Photo Tip

Both the iPhone and the iPod touch make for stellar pocket cameras, and the iPad and iPad
mini aren’t too bad in a pinch either. An iOS device isn’t perfect for every photographic need but
it can serve awfully well in many situations where you might once have needed a digital
camera.
When using your device’s rear-facing camera, you can enable HDR (high dynamic range) for
your photos by tapping the Options button and toggling HDR on. Dynamic range is the light
spectrum that an eye—or a camera sensor—can read, and the HDR option can be great for
shots with multiple light levels. Your sunset-portrait shot, for example, will capture both your
subject and the fire-red sky. Apple’s HDR setting takes three images at different exposures
(underexposed, overexposed, and in the middle) and combines them.
Because your device’s HDR setting frequently results in improved images, it’s tempting to leave
it on all the time. After all, you can set the camera to save regular and enhanced copies of each
photo to your Camera Roll (by going to Settings > Photos). That way, if the HDR shot doesn’t
wow you, you still have the original photo as well. Unfortunately, each HDR photo takes several
seconds to save. If you’re short on storage space the data required to save an additional larger
version of each image file can add up fast.
If there is any movement of your subject during a HDR photo you will get ghosting in the final
shot as the three exposures are taking a slightly different times. Never tap the shutter button to
take your photo - it can result in cameraphone shake and a blurry photo. Instead place your
finger on the shutter button and slide it slowly off - the photo is actually taken as your finger
comes off the button, not when you tap it. That's why some photos can be blurry - people
think think the've taken the photo, move slightly and the exposure is taken. Likewise this
technique can produce better photos than using the volume buttons to snap the photo,
because there is less potential for movement of the phone during the snapshot.

How to unlearn words from the Spelling Dictionary

Let's say that you write a text about someone with the unusual name
"Magnaus". The name is red underlined in Pages or TextEdit as incorrectly
spelled. To add the name to your spelling dictionary you may simply
Control-click (right-click) on it and select "Learn Spelling" from the menu,
and Pages/TextEdit will from now on accept the spelling.
Now, assume that by mistake the word you right-clicked was "Magnaus" and the actual name
should have been spelled “Magnus”. To tell Pages/TextEdit that you made a mistake that should
be forgotten, you Control-click the word Magnaus and this time select "Unlearn Spelling" from
the menu.
