NEWSLETTER #6 - October 2013 Fun at Georgeham for Year 6 Dear Diary Waking early, I yawned and rose from my bunk. We tidied our rooms and got dressed, then went down for breakfast. We had toast, cereal and also tea and orange juice, which was a dream. Then we went rock scrambling and we were with Odd Job (aka Chris). At first it was dry but funny because we kept slipping. Slipping, sliding and screaming, my tummy rumbled. I had butterflies. We went down a little cave hole thing and I felt a bit claustrophobic. Next we had our lunch and I had a tuna and salad sandwich with a banana, taxi bar and some crisps. After lunch we got on our swimsuits but I forgot mine so I had to wear my shorts, underwear and a vest top. Then we to the coach house to put our wet suits on. It was very hard and kept getting stuck. I finally got it on and I couldn’t move. Waddling like a penguin, me and Hannah struggled to sit normally. At the beach we got in to partners that are about the same size as we were. I was with Demi. Then we decided who was doing what first. I did body boarding and Demi did surfing. Ollie said he was a pro but he wasn’t. It was funny because I kept rolling off the front of my board. After that we went back. It was time for dinner and we had chicken and mushroom pie and for pudding we had ice cream and Mars Bar sauce. After that me, Libby, Demi, Ella, Chloe and Meg had a shower, got dressed and went to the coach house. After playing battle ships we went to the living room and listened to a story. Next we went to our bedrooms and got our PJs on and brushed our teeth. Walking like a zombie, we all got into our beds and me and Jess had three pillows. Finally at about 11.30pm we all fell asleep. AMBER BRADLEY 6RP ‘It's really hard for me to pick a favourite moment as it was all great!’ MACKENZIE CLARKE 6AB ‘Surfing for me was great as it was the first time I stood on a surfboard.’ JOSIE ADAMS 6AB Re-enactment of Battle of Marathon To celebrate the start of our Greek topic, Year 6 held a re-enactment of the Battle of Marathon - fought between the armies of Persia and Greece in 490 BC. Complete with cardboard spears, swords and shields, the two armies faced each other in formation and experienced how the battle was won and lost. You'll have to ask the pupils of Year 6 which the victorious army was! RUNNING TOTALS House Points Challenger: Discovery: Endeavour: Enterprise: 73 69 67 70 We would like to say a very big thank you for another successful Macmillan Coffee Morning which we held at our school on Friday 27th September. The children, staff and parents were once again extremely generous in providing wonderful cakes, supporting the open coffee morning and donating money towards this valuable cause. It was lovely to have the opportunity to meet and chat to parents, grandparents and great grandparents over a cup of coffee and cake. Book To Be Published At the beginning of this year, Jamie Petrie introduced a group of 11 dyslexic children from Year 3 to Year 6 to a local author, Sue Boyd. The children and Sue formed a writing group, meeting once a week for 7 months. During that time and with Sue's help, the children planned and crafted individual stories. Using her writing skills, Sue linked the stories together and ex pupil, Katy McCarten skilfully illustrated them to create a children's book. The book, 'The Bridge' is currently being published and will be on sale very shortly. Everyone involved in the project is very proud of the children's achievements and we are sure you will enjoy reading their stories. BEV LEE Road Safety Week The children, as usual, were amazing with their enthusiasm - dressed in green and waiting patiently in queues to choose their cakes for break time. Everyone gave so generously that once again we were able to hold another cake sale after school which helped increase the funds raised. The final sum we raised for Macmillan was £406.29. Thank you!
