Many of you may not be aware that The Friends of The Ronald McDonald House provide an evening meal
once a week to one of our locations. These meals are greatly appreciated by our families during a difficult and
stressful period in their lives tending to sick or injured children.
I would like to say thank you to those of you who have stepped up to the plate and provided a meal this year
and encourage those of you who have not had an opportunity to provide a meal to sign up for the new year. If
you know of an organization, have a group of friends, or would just be interested in doing a little something to
help someone in need, please consider signing up for a date. The meal can be as simple as picking up pizzas
and dessert or providing a home cooked meal.

Here’s to 25 more.....

On May 5, 1985 the very first
San Antonio Ronald McDonald
House opened its doors at 227
Lewis Street. The 10 bedroom
facility quickly grew to a 20
bedroom home. Since then we
have welcomed 2 more houses
as well as 2 Ronald McDonald
Family Rooms in Laredo, Texas. This year our house on Lewis St., celebrated its 25th
birthday...And what a celebration it was! Children of all
ages gathered at our house to be turned into cats, bats, and
bunnies by the face painter, saddled up for pony rides,
tested their throwing arms while playing the carnivalstyle games, looked into the future with the Fortune Teller,
and filled their bellies with hot dogs, hamburgers, and nachos prepared by our awesome volunteers. Party-goers
engaged in light saber duels with members of the Star
Wars Society of San Antonio, climbed aboard “Bear”, the
S.W.A.T. truck with Officer Rafael Trinidad, and explored
the hook and ladder truck with the guys from Fire Station
#6. Of course no celebration would be complete without
the man himself and our name-sake, Ronald McDonald,
who was on hand to pose for pictures and show off his
talent for magic. Our party also featured an acknowledgement ceremony which honored our Ronald McDonald House Past Presidents and corporate sponsors. We
also recognized our Executive Director, Patricia Bivin,
who came on board just 6 months after the house opened.
All in all, it has been a memorable 25 years, filled with
hope, love, and support. Some of the faces have changed,
but our mission has stayed the same,
to provide a comfortable, safe, convenient atmosphere of support and a
home-away-from-home for families
in need. We would like to thank everyone who has made it possible for
the San Antonio Ronald McDonald
Houses to evolve and prosper over
these last 25 years. Here’s to 25 more !

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Wag More, Bark Less!
It’s that time of year when we come up with our New Year’s resolutions, using the start of the
new year as the springboard to vow to change some of our less desirable behaviors. The Top
10 New Year’s resolutions (according to www.goalsguy.com) include losing weight, getting out
of debt, spending more time with family and friends, quitting smoking, and volunteering and
helping others. Nothing on the top 10 list is a surprise, because most of these represent changes
in behavior that are simply difficult to change, so of course they make the list year after year.
This year, rather than pick from the same standard list of specific things we want to change about
ourselves, I suggest we all resolve to change the way we deal with our challenges, and with other
people. This broader approach will likely yield greater success in helping us achieve many of our
goals, instead of just one. Sitting in traffic the other day I saw a bumper sticker on the car in front of
me that simply said “Wag more, Bark less”. What great advice. What if everyone made that their
New Year’s resolution? Approaching what life hands us with a positive attitude and treating each
other with respect sure seems to be a recipe for success, regardless of what your specific goals are.
When dogs are in a group, if one barks typically they all start barking; and if one is wagging his tail, they all start wagging. The same is true for us. So in 2011, why not resolve to be a positive force in your family, at work, at your church, in your volunteer efforts, or wherever you interact with others and can be the catalyst for positive change?
So how can you put this resolution into action in a way that yields immediate results? Consider
getting involved with the Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Antonio. Whether you
donate your time, your talents, or your resources, there is nothing quite as satisfying as helping
others make a difficult situation better. The children and families we serve could definitely use
a huge dose of wagging!
I also saw another dog related, advice bearing bumper sticker recently that caught my attention: “Be the person your dog thinks you are”. Another great piece of advice; perhaps
we can tee that up for 2012. Until then, let’s all resolve in 2011 to wag more and bark less!
We have begun preparing for SHARE YOUR HEART
2011. There were 80 invitations sent out his year to area
schools for participation in this wonderful community service project. If you want to help or just find out if your local school is participating just ask if they sent in the hot
pink response card. If they haven’t encourage them to do
so. This is such a great way for kids to get involved in something that is geared toward helping other children and their
families. There is still time to respond as this event doesn’t
take place until after the new year. If you have any questions

This October brought cooler weather, kiddos
in Halloween costumes, and our first annual
Kids & Clays auction at the National Shooting
Complex. On Friday, October 29th over 3,000
shooters and observers alike made their way
up and down rows of tables holding our more
than 150 auction items.
From directors chairs to DVD’s, gift baskets,
to gift cards, hunting knives to necklaces...this
auction was a success and raised more than
$9,000 for the Ronald McDonald Houses of
San Antonio. We look forward to next year!
We would like to thank the National Shooting Complex, Michael & Kris Hampton, all of
our generous donors and sponsors, and a very

House Manager’s Corner Greetings. My name is Sharon Hensley, and I am the
new House Manager here at the Medical Center Ronald McDonald House. I have the privilege of stepping in to replace
Susie Valdez (our previous House Manager); she retired and moved to Reno in July of this year.
I was first introduced to the Ronald McDonald House back in the 80’s when my parents, Frank and Doris Hensley, were
the resident Managers at the Lewis Street House. I worked there for a short time as part-time weekend manager.
After relocating to Dallas, Texas and working many years in the financial industry, I decided I needed a career change.
South Texas was calling me home. I was happy to make the move, especially to be closer to my mother. She has come
back to RMCH as the night manager here at Medical Center. I put faith in the good Lord to see me through all these
changes, and he sure came through.
My prayers were answered when I applied for, and then was offered the job as House Manager. The rest is history. I
LOVE MY JOB, and have to tell you that I have not been able to say that for many many years. In fact I don’t consider
it as a “job”, but rather my “vocation”. I find it very rewarding and it keeps me very busy, which I love. I have “office
time” but also put in a lot of elbow grease. I couldn’t ask for a better position or a better group of ladies and volunteers
to work with. I know that this must have been my calling and so my long range plans, God willing, will keep me here
for many years to come.
If you are in the neighborhood, please stop by and introduce yourself, as I would like to get to know all of our “McDonald House” friends and families.

Dear Ronald McDonald House Family: During this special time of year, we count our many blessings, gather with those we
love, remember those in need and miss those who have gone before us. Once again 2010 has brought us many blessings.
Getting to know the beautiful and courageous children we serve is one of our greatest blessings. The worst of circumstances brings them to our home – pediatric cancer, burns, premature births and tragic accidents, just to name a few. We
rejoice as these special children improve and flourish. We mourn the loss when they do not.
We are also blessed to have a dedicated Board of Directors who are passionate about our mission and ensuring our 3
homes and 2 family rooms continue to provide a respite for those in need. Their continued vision and leadership keeps us
on track and allows us to constantly look for new, meaningful ways to improve and increase the services we provide.
Our local McDonald owners are our partners in every way. They serve on our board, support our fundraising activities and
initiate fundraising in their restaurants, like the canisters. We appreciate their continued participation and are blessed they
share our passion for the mission of Ronald McDonald House Charities.
We continue to express tremendous gratitude to the Friends of the Ronald McDonald House. This tireless group of volunteers truly bless our homes with their acts of kindness. They plan great fundraising events to benefit our homes but just
as impressive, they make sure our homes have fresh baked cookies, evening meals and that our homes are decorated for the
holidays. Thank you for all you do so well.
“Home is where the heart is” – a popular saying, but true. Our volunteers and wonderful staff bring their hearts to work
with them on a daily basis. They turn these houses into homes. They show our families in ways large and small that they
truly care about what they are going through. They go out of their way to bring comfort to a troubled heart and a smile to
a worried soul.
In closing, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to all of you who share my love for Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Antonio. When you look into the eyes of a worried mom or dad, see the pained expression of an ill child or
hear the stories of hope mixed with fear you understand that our mission is pure. If we can take away a small part of the
worry associated with having a critically ill child, dry one tear or replace that tear with a laugh, we have made a difference
and we are blessed for having had the opportunity to touch someone in that way.
I thank each of you for blessing us with your gifts large and small, tangible and intangible. Thank you for your part in
helping us embrace and care for families. May the remainder of 2010 and the year 2011 be healthy and happy for those you
love and those we serve.

Annual Tennis Play Day and
Fashion Show Luncheon
Many tennis (and non-tennis) players enjoyed a great time with old and new
friends at the Club at Sonterra this fall. The fun fashion show featured beautiful clothing from Nancy’s at the Quarry as well as from the Sonterra tennis
and golf pro shops. The meal was delicious and the large array of silent
auction items brought in great money for the “Friends of the Ronald McDonald House”. Beautiful table centerpieces were purchased by guests and two
fabulous jewelry pieces were awarded to lucky raffle ticket winners. The
women were appreciative of the fabulous goodie bags and great door prizes.
This new fundraising event was a big success and continues to grow yearly.
