An individual report for each child who sat the tests will be provided by ACARA and sent to us next Term. We will then send these home to you. Last Thursday we hosted the Director General of Education, Sharyn O‟Neill, for an afternoon visit. The weather was glorious; thanks to Warren the grounds were idyllic and the tour our student leaders took her on was memorable. The brief I set our student leaders was to take her to their favourite places and so they did. When the tour was over Sharyn remarked that not only was she delighted that the students had shared their favourite places but interestingly none of those were classrooms! Sharyn said it had been a long time since she last been in a cubby and she had never seen any as good as ours in a school setting. We finished her short tour with a visit to the Farm where as well as the expected gardening exploits she was able to watch a demonstration of sheep crutching carried out by Robin Tioke and Darci Campbell. Her final comment to me was that this was not the type of school visit she was used to! I was very proud of the way our students conducted themselves. With our Inter-House Cross Country run on this Friday I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible attending this great event. FROM THE PRIMARY DEPUTY PRINCIPAL – Jayde Hewson NAPLAN Last week the Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 students worked extremely hard to complete the Australia wide NAPLAN testing. I would like to congratulate all the students on their outstanding effort during this time. Parents will receive their child‟s results in approximately mid-September. Cross Country and Adidas Fun Run th The Cross Country and Adidas Fun Run will be held this Friday 20 May. All students are expected to participate in the event to demonstrate good sportsmanship. The event will take place starting behind the Pre-Primary building and ending on the Primary Oval where the faction shelters and tables will be provided. Please make sure you order a sausage sizzle to help support the Year 8/9 camp and pay your money on the day. All presentations, individual and champion faction, will take place on the day from approximately 12:40pm. nd Once again we will be hosting the Inter-School Cross Country on Thursday 2 June with seven schools participating. If you are able to lend a hand on the Inter-school Cross Country day please contact Mr Ringrose. Speech and Drama th Please help your child with their preparations for the Speech and Drama Festival which is on Wednesday 15 June for th Year 4 to 6 and Thursday 16 June for Year 7 to 10 students. If you would like extra information on the festival or would like to help on the day, please contact your child‟s classroom teacher or myself on 9831 2300. Positive Behaviour in Schools Week 4‟s PBiS focus is „returning to class promptly after breaks‟ and Week 5‟s focus in „sit quietly and listen‟. Commonwealth Games 2018 Would you like to give your child the opportunity to attend the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Queensland? We would! KDHS is looking at running a good standing trip for all students Year 6 to 10 in 2018 to the Commonwealth Games. The students that are involved are those currently in Year 4 to Year 8. We are looking for expressions of interest from those families with children in these particular year groups. th So far the trip is looking like it would be seven or eight days away including flying time. The games run from 4 April to th 15 April 2018, at this stage we would be looking at Week 10, Term 1. However this trip will mean that there will be no Year 7 Orientation Camp or Year 8/9 Camp in Term 3. th As an Interstate Camp requires a lot more planning and fundraising we would like to get EOI back by 10 June 2016. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact myself on 9831 2300 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------EXPRESSION OF INTEREST 2018 COMMONWEALTH GAMES CAMP Family Surname: ________________ I am interested in my child attending the 2018 Commonwealth Games Camp I am NOT interested in my child attending the 2018 Commonwealth Games Camp Signed: _____________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ --------------------------------------------- FROM THE SECONDARY DEPUTY PRINCIPAL – Bob Trouchet NAPLAN Testing This has been completed and only two students missed one test due to absence. Results will be in the school end of Term 3 and parents will be provided with details on their child‟s performance soon after. Volunteer Recognition We are very proud of the nomination of our Physical Education teacher Derek Ringrose for Young Volunteer of the Year for his Active After School Program at the Shire Volunteer Recognition function. He was subsequently awarded a Highly Commended certificate as “runner up” in this category. Netball Cup Our teams made us all proud at the Netball Cup with their sportsmanship and excellent behaviour. Mackenzie Pape was awarded “Aussie of the Month” at the last assembly for her umpiring efforts during the day. Safety in a Digital World Wednesday‟s paper included an interesting article about the dangers for young people nowadays due to digital technologies and social media. The author, who is a principal of a private Perth girl‟s school, likened the way in which parents prepare young children to be safe near swimming pools with the way in which parents should be preparing them to be safe in the digital world. The big difference was that parents are often less knowledgeable about digital dangers than water dangers even though the children are likely to spend a lot less time near water . A scary statistic quoted was that 40% of Years 10 to 12 students would have been involved in “sexting”. Upcoming Events Students have been practising for the Inter-House Cross Country on this Friday during Phys Ed classes for this term. They are practising for the Speech and Drama Festival during English classes as well. I wish them all well in both events. CANTEEN Thank you to all the ladies who once again put their name down for our roster. We have limited slushy‟s left and when these have all gone they will no longer be available. Don‟t forget soup and stuffed potatoes are on our winter menu. NOTE: We have been having far too many “I don‟t have any money I will pay you tomorrow”. This is not acceptable as we then have to chase up these IOU‟s. In this instance a vegemite sandwich is all they will be provided. We do make allowances if we have a call in an emergency, this is at our discretion. Sue and Cathy FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE - Carol Nicholls PACKED WITH GOODNESS: Lunchbox ideas for busy parents and carers - Episode 2. But there‟s something they love even MORE, Than looking mean and hairy! This very funny Underpants story is hairy, scary – and silly! You‟ll never think of monsters in the same way again! The pick for Middle Primary NATHALIA BUTTFACE and the MOST EMBARRASSING FIVE MINUTES OF FAME EVER By Nigel Smith Many girls dream of fame, of their chance to shine like a star in the spotlight. But when a video of her dancing goes viral, Nathalia soon realizes that becoming an instant celebrity isn‟t all it‟s cracked up to be. From strangers pointing and laughing at her in the street, to hitting some dizzy heights while turning on the local park‟s new lights, Nat longs to be normal again. But wait….coolest-girl-in-school Flora Marling wants to be her friend and companies keep sending her brilliant free stuff…what‟s a girl to do? Our yearly BOOK FAIR has been and gone. What a fantastic and busy week it was in the Library. Thank you so much for continuing to support our BOOK FAIR. This year sales gave us $720 worth of rewards. I have used all of these wonderful rewards on items that were on sale in our BOOK FAIR. So, this means our students will see items from the BOOK FAIR on our shelves very soon. My picks for this week are two of the new books to start with! Oh and the fact that they both have „bottom‟ themes is purely… a coincidence! BOOK CLUB The order for Issue 3 has been placed. LOOP is closed and no late orders will be accepted. Sonya Koster ECE MOTHERS DAY AFTERNOON TEA th On Thursday 5 May the ECE held their Mother‟s Day Afternoon Tea. Mums were treated to nail painting, hand, shoulder and neck massages and a yummy afternoon tea. On top of all this the students had made a very special gift. We would like to thank everyone for coming along and making the afternoon so special. SQUASH CLINIC th th On Monday 4 and Tuesday 5 April students who were in “Good Standing” had the opportunity to take part in a Squash Clinic. The squash clinic was run by Mike Cornish who is the State Coaching Director for Squash WA. This was a free clinic as the cost was covered by the new Sporting Schools Program; the aim of this program is to encourage school aged children to participate in sport and to develop a healthy and active lifestyle. Students were broken up into year levels and were taught a progression of age appropriate skills. The students had a fantastic and enjoyable day and should be commended for their participation and behaviour. Some students enjoyed it so much that they even attended an after school session that Mike kindly offered to run. Due to the success of the clinic we will be looking to get Mike back out again later in the year. I would also like to thank the Squash Club for letting us use the courts. HAWAIIAN BIKE RIDE th The 2016 Hawaiian Ride for Youth visited KDHS on Wednesday 6 April, on their way from Albany to Perth. We are one of 19 schools that they visit to help raise awareness for Youth Mental Health. The Hawaiian Ride for Youth is one of Australia‟s premier charity events. Held annually over five days, riders travel from Albany to Perth covering over 700kms to raise money for Youth Focus. While cycling through towns in WA‟s SouthWest, Great Southern and Wheatbelt, the riders visit high schools to engage and inform students on issues of youth suicide, depression and self-harm, and the services that Youth Focus provides. The student council organised a Hawaiian Dress Up Day with everyone donating a gold coin to help this much needed cause. Just over $200.00 was raised which was donated to the riders on the day. The Hawaiian Ride for Youth have currently raised $2,328,809.00 with all funds raised used to assist in the prevention of youth suicide and depression.
