HELLO
WELCOME
Welcome to Walsall College - one of the
most successful colleges in the country, a
place where you can begin your journey
towards a bright future.
We are not just outstanding; we are an exciting and
safe place to study, a place where everyone is
welcomed and supported in reaching their full
potential.
By joining us you will belong to the only college in the
Black Country to be rated outstanding by Ofsted:
outstanding for teaching and learning; outstanding for
state-of-the-art facilities; and outstanding in our success
rates, which put us in the top 10% in the country.
Just take a look at some of our former students who
have gone on to achieve outstanding success after
completing one of our vocational courses, including
business student Joshua Dowen (page 10), who has
gone on to secure an Apprenticeship with KPMG, and
Craig Morris, who achieved his goal of becoming an air
steward (page 85).
V6, our sixth form with a difference, will provide you
with every opportunity you need to play your own part
in that success story.
As well as benefiting from outstanding academic
opportunities, you can take part in extra-curricular
activities - national competitions, volunteering at events
or working on live industry briefs that will put you one
step ahead of the competition when you apply for a job
or university place. Walsall College is also a place to
make friends and our lively Students’ Union will help
you settle in to life here.
Because we’re always finding ways to improve your
learning experience and career prospects here. In
2015, we open a stunning new £11m Business and
Sports Hub. We’ve invested £300,000 in an impressive
Engineering and Manufacturing Workshop. And we’re
extremely proud to now offer a full BA (Hons) degree
at a fraction of the cost of going to university.
We hope you find the course you are looking for. You
have a lot of work ahead but we will support you every
step of the way. It’s why we are looking forward to
welcoming you - we can’t wait to help you make it
happen at Walsall College.

Vocational
programme

Work
experience
Example of one type of study model
“There are many talents and paths to success
and ‘learning by doing’ is valued equally with
academic learning.” *
Your Study Programme will include a
number of elements. Each study
programme will be unique to your
individual needs to support your career
ambitions.
Walsall College’s V6 is a sixth form with a difference, all of our
courses are vocational.
You can achieve your goals with a vocational qualification.
So whether you’re driven by going to university or getting that
dream job, you can get there the V6 way!
• Vocational qualification - for most students this will
make up the majority of their study programme. A mix of
practical and theory, the qualification will stretch your
understanding of the subject.
On completing your studies, you will not only be qualified to
a national standard in your chosen field, you will be a Walsall
College Graduate:
• English and maths - you will work towards achieving an
A*-C grade in GCSE English and maths. If you have
already achieved this, you will continue to build on your
skills in these subjects.
• Skilled - You will have the industry skills, knowledge and
experience to thrive in the workplace, from day one of
employment.
• Work Experience - you will undertake meaningful work
experience related to the vocational area of the Study
Programme, to develop employability skills and apply
your learning in real life situations.
• Professional - You will be job ready, with bags of initiative,
communication skills and the ability to work well as part of
a team.
• Enrichment - your programme will also include other
activities designed to support and help you develop the
job related skills, experience and confidence required to
progress to employment or Higher Education. These
activities such as tutorials, personal and social
development, volunteering and sport. See page 16.
• Enterprising - You will be resourceful, adaptable to the
changing needs of business and able to innovate.

HELLO
WHAT IS V6?
WORKING WITH PARENTS
The support and encouragement you give your child at home can make a big difference to
their success at College. We have a good relationship with our students’ parents and their
involvement.
Parents’ role
Online parents’ forum
Encourage your child to complete homework on time. It’s
set regularly and is essential to their independent learning.
What do you think? What do you like about the College?
How could we improve? Tell us at
[email protected]
Make sure they attend regularly. Missing essential
coursework or exams can really affect your child’s chances of
success. If they are ill, please call or email their personal tutor.
Our role
Expect regular updates. We’ll keep you informed about your
child’s behaviour, homework, exams, assessments, successes
and areas for improvement. You’ll get a report card termly, as
well as four parents’ evenings a year.
Remind them to look after their belongings and leave
expensive equipment at home. It may cost you a lot of money
to replace items.
Talk to us. Come along to our termly parents’ evening so that
we can chat about your child’s progress.
Have your say. Share your opinions, ask questions and make
suggestions on our online parents’ forum - and help us shape
our students’ future.
Benefit from personal guidance and support for your
child. Each child has a personal tutor who is responsible for
their care, progress and achievement. They’re always on hand
to help them reach their full potential - and help with any
difficulties.
“The College helped my daughter
realise her dream. The teachers
filled her with confidence and
belief that anything is possible.”

Barbering Apprenticeship

Do you want the skills to progress on to an
Apprenticeship? Here’s the perfect place to
start. Traineeships prepare you for work and
give you the valuable, high quality work
experience and confidence in the workplace
that employers really rate. It’s a new programme
for 16-24 year olds and a great way to take the
first step on the career ladder.
APPRENTICESHIPS
An Apprenticeship is a brilliant first step on the
career path in many businesses. They’re an
excellent way of gaining nationally recognised
qualifications whilst earning a wage, and
combine practical ‘hands on’ work experience
with academic knowledge. Put the skills you
learn into practice on the job, in the workplace,
in real life situations - what could prepare you
better?

Do you want to gain the skills needed to progress on to
an Apprenticeship? Traineeships are a new programme for
young people aged 16 to 24 to help them take the first
step on the career ladder. By completing a traineeship,
candidates will develop the skills and workplace
experience required by employers when hiring
apprentices. Students will also have a lot more confidence
in their own abilities and be job-ready.
An Apprenticeship is a brilliant first step on the career
path in many businesses. They are an excellent way of
gaining nationally recognised qualifications whilst earning
a wage, and combine practical ‘hands-on’ experience with
academic knowledge.
Traineeships are intended for young people who:
• are not currently in a job and have little work
experience, but who are focused on work or the
prospect of it
There are three levels of Apprenticeships available:
• Intermediate Level Apprenticeship - Level 2
• Advanced Level Apprenticeship - Level 3
• Higher Level Apprenticeship - Level 4
How do you become an apprentice?
• are 16-19 and are qualified below Level 3 or 19-24 and
have not yet achieved a full level 2 qualification
Areas covered in the programme include:
• focused work preparation training - eg CV writing,
interview preparation, job searching, inter-personal skills
You might already be employed but if not, to find
vacancies go to:
• or come into The Job Shop and complete an
application
If you are already employed...
• high-quality work experience - giving young people
real-life work placement to enhance their skills and
confidence
If you want to further your qualifications in the job you
are currently in, you could ask your employer if this is
possible. Apprenticeship training won’t cost your
employer anything if you are between the ages of 16-18.
• English and maths - for young people who have not
achieved a GCSE grade C or equivalent or better
How much can you earn?
The initiative is part of the government’s wider aim to
ensure the future workforce possesses the skills that
employers want in their apprentices and employees.
The National Minimum Wage for apprentices is £2.73 per
hour (as of 1/10/14). But many employers pay more - the
average salary is approximately £170 per week.
What are the entry requirements?
To find out more, please contact our Apprenticeships
Team on 01922 651129.
Typically 4 GCSEs at Grade C or above, including Maths
and English, or a NVQ in a related subject, but each
framework has different entry requirements so check our
course sheets.
What if you don’t meet the entry criteria?
Did you know? After finishing, the majority of
apprentices (85%) will stay in employment, with
two-thirds (64%) staying with the same employer.
Don’t worry, there are a number of routes you can follow
to help you get the required skills to do an
Apprenticeship. Please come in to the college or call
01922 651129 and we can discuss your options.

Advanced Apprenticeship in
Light Vehicle Maintenance
and Repair (Level 3)
My initial ambitions were to become
a race engineer but following poor
results at A Level I decided to look
for an Apprenticeship. After
researching them, I came to the
conclusion that an Apprenticeship
was probably the best way for me to
learn and would also still give me the
opportunity to work on vehicles.
Throughout the course there was a
good balance of practical and
theoretical learning which really
helped my understanding. Since
leaving the College I’ve now gained
a full-time job as a mechanic at West
Midlands Ambulance Service
(WMAS) where I completed my
Apprenticeship. My day-to-day duties
include the service and maintenance
of the entire ambulance fleet as well
as running repairs during the day if
needed. I absolutely love working on
the vehicles, problem solving and the
variety of work on a day-to-day
basis!
25
I now aim to increase my knowledge
in the motor trade before hopefully
working my way up into
management roles. On the job
experience is what a lot of employers
look for nowadays so I’d definitely
encourage others to go down this
route as an Apprenticeship gives you
that as well as recognised
qualifications! Walsall College was
an enjoyable place to learn with a
relaxed atmosphere and tutors who
were always willing to help when
you needed support.

Craig Morris,
Thomas Cook Cabin Crew
The lecturers at Walsall College were fantastic - they
have all worked in the travel and tourism industry,
so they really know what they’re talking about.
Nothing is too much trouble for them and they are
very supportive if and whenever you need it.
I was really proud when I passed all my exams first
time. The course really did increase my self-esteem
and confidence, which helped me greatly when
applying for my apprenticeship. When you’re
dealing face to face with members of the public you
need to be sure about your abilities and appear
confident.
When I completed my Diploma, I took NVQ Level 2
and NVQ Level 3 (apprenticeship and Advanced
Apprenticeship) in Travel & Tourism. I’ve now been a
fully-fledged member of Thomas Cook Cabin Crew
for four weeks and I’ve already been as far afield as
Toronto and Canada. To me, being paid to be
onboard is amazing and I am really loving the job. I
enjoy meeting people and making friends - my
friends on Facebook have doubled in the last few
weeks!
Fly high with our aeroplane simulation space
It’s not just about pushing a trolley up and down the
aisle, in reality you’re a policeman, paramedic and
fire-fighter as well, and you have to be prepared for
any eventuality. My ultimate goal is to become a pilot.
