Cold milling machines
W 1500 / W 1900
The all-rounders in the intermediate class
Cold milling machines W 1500/ W 1900: Robust,
versatile in application and well-thought out
The W 1900 seen here removing an entire carriageway structure in a single pass. The good traction, the powerful travelling drives plus the high milling
rial to be transported away from the milling chamber reliably and swiftly.
In the course of ten years, the tried and
tested cold milling machines of the
1300–2000 DC series have truly earned
their excellent reputation. They have
been revised and have been operating
on sites under the name of W 1500 /
W 1900 since the beginning of 2001.
The new series offers the ultimate in
flexibility with regard to the working
width, combined with tried and tested
features which are perfectly oriented to
practical applications.
A powerful motor
The units of the cold milling machines
are driven by a modern 320 kW diesel
engine. This easily accessible engine
performs reliably, fulfilling the stan-
2
dards EU-COM 2 and EPA 2. The machines are also sound-proofed. Interruptions to operation for the refilling of
fuel are rare occurrences thanks to the
large fuel tank, which can accommodate as much as 800 litres, added to
the low fuel consumption of the engine.
The W 1900 can also be equipped with
the FCS, an innovative system from
Wirtgen (see page 5). The system permits fast alteration of the working
width within a range of 60 cm to 2 m.
Both standard milling drums and fine
milling drums can be used in conjunction with the system.
Versatile milling unit
Effective drum drive
When it comes to versatility, the W 1500/
W 1900 are unrivalled in their class. For
instance, the W 1500 can not only operate with the standard working width of
1.50 m, but also with a unit that has a
working width of 1.32 m. A milling drum
with a working width of 2 m is a standard
fitting of the W 1900.
The mechanical drive of the milling
drum converts the engine output into
milling performance at an extremely
high efficiency. This enables the machines to attain a phenomenal daily
performance, even when working to the
maximum milling depth of 30 cm, in
other words when removing entire car-

riageway structures in a single pass.
neatly evened out.
Accurate levelling
As the machine can commence milling
at an initial depth of 30 cm, it is possible
to mill to the required working depth
from the very first metre. During further
operation, the proportionally operating
automatic level control, which is integrated as standard, compensates alterations in the reference level quickly and
without overshooting.
The contractor has a number of different
sensors at its fingertips for all working
situations, such as ultrasonic sensors or
cable sensors. If the optionally available
multiplex system is integrated, even
bumps in a longitudinal direction are
Compact form
The cold milling machines W 1500 /
W 1900 have a compact appearance –
as is usual with Wirtgen. This brings a
number of advantages:
• Firstly, the machine operator always
has a good view of the truck in front
of him, but also an overview of all
other movements around the machine; this makes for security.
transported fully equipped without a
special permit; this makes the contractor flexible when employing the
machines.
• Thirdly, turning manoeuvres can be
carried out quickly and safely, even
on small sites thanks to the machine’s compact outer dimensions.
• Secondly, the machine is simple to
transport thanks to its compact construction. The operating weight is
perfectly adapted to the applications
of the machine and enables it to be

The milling drum –
Advanced technology for the highest standards
The milling drum of the W 1500 or the W 1900, equipped here with the patented and tried and tested quick-change toolholder system HT3, is
mounted in a stable drum housing of highly wear-resistant steel (HB 400).
Cutting technology –
A core field of compentence
The experience gained by Wirtgen in
cutting technology is very much in evidence in the cold milling machines
W 1500 / W 1900. Ideally positioned
toolholders and the ingenious drum
edge fittings ensure a neat milling result. The centrally positioned ejectors
reliably convey the milled asphalt out of
the drum chamber – and that goes for
all working widths with which the cold
milling machines W 1500 / W 1900 can
be operated. The integrated stainless
steel spray bar effectively cools the
cutters during milling. This prolongs the
service life of the cutters quite considerably.
At the push of a button, hydraulic cylinders open the scraper blade wide enough to provide the
operator with ample space to change the cutters.

The working quality of the cold milling
machines W 1500 / W 1900 is borne
out by a wealth of features: the optionally available gradation control
beam effectively prevents large slabs
from breaking out of the asphalt. And
this works with all milling depths, as
the gradation control beam is designed for positioning right up in front
of drum.

these versatile machines, for instance
the side plates which can be raised hydraulically for milling along road fittings

With the Flexible Cutter System (FCS) the drum can be changed in as little as two to three hours.
This enhances the versatility of the W 1900, contributing to its high economic efficiency.
Option: the side plate, which can be raised.
For a continuously high milling performance at top efficiency: the mechanical drive of the
milling drum with automatic belt tensioner.
The side plates reliably seal off the drum
housing in the operating position.

Simple operation,
simple service
In the walk-through operator’s platform of the W 1500 / W 1900 the operating elements are within easy reach, arranged in function groups and all
clearly labelled.
From the clearly laid out operator’s
platform of the cold milling machines
W 1500 / W 1900 the machine operator
can control all the functions of the machine. Safe operation of the machine
has also been ensured, as all operating conditions can be clearly read from
the well-labelled instruments. The
platforms above the access ladders,
where the operators spend a great
deal of time, are mounted on vibration
absorbers for fatigue-free working.
The walk-through operator’s platform,
which can be accessed from either
side, is equipped with two steering
wheels. The milling edge is always
clearly visible from either position –
right or left. This is even the case in the
dark, as bright, freely mountable headlights illuminate the main points of the
machine and the site.
With the cold milling machines
W 1500 / W 1900 maintenance is also
a simple matter for operators. Easily
accessible maintenance and inspection points make it easy to gain an
overview of the condition of the machine in the shortest of times and
quickly carry out any work necessary.
This makes valuable working time
available to put the machines to a profitable use – milling.
Simple maintenance: the hydraulic oil filter, air filter, fuel filter and return suction filter are easily
accessible under the engine bonnet.

Manoeuvrable crawler tracks,
slewing discharge belt
Whether the machine is being loaded,
manoeuvred, turned on small sites or
whether it is milling urban roads with
curves or fittings: the tried and tested
all-crawler drive used with the cold
milling machines W 1500 / W 1900 permits safe and swift operation.
The machines excel through the optimum position of their four crawler
tracks, which come with PU shoes as
standard, and their small turning track
diameter. In addition, the four crawlers
only exert very low ground pressures.
In position in less than no time: the smooth all-crawler steering with large steering angles
means that the machine can pull up alongside any milling track in an instant.
The hydraulic tubes are laid in the belt construction and are well protected.
With the cold milling machines
W 1500 / W 1900 the milled material is
conveyed onto the truck via a two-part
front loading system. A short loading
belt takes the granulated material into
the milling chamber and conveys it via
a well-covered transfer point to the
slewing discharge belt. A slewing angle of 45 ° to either side enables trucks
travelling offset to the milling track to
be loaded.
The discharge belt can be folded hydraulically for the transport of the machines (option). This cuts the overall
transport length by over 3 m.
The discharge arc can be altered at any time thanks to the adjustable discharge belt speed,
so that the trucks can be fully loaded.
