MY CARE—it’s about compassion and caring when our patients and family members need
it the most.
And for RVH Security Officer
Leah Opara, it means not even
thinking twice about kindly guiding a visitor to see a loved one in
our ICU.
Earlier that day, Security attended a Code Blue after which
the patient was transferred to
ICU. The patient’s wife (shown
above with Leah) was notified
and quickly came to RVH. Leah
offered to meet the wife at the
Emergency entrance.
Upon arrival, Leah took her
hand and showed her the way to
the ICU. This little extra effort
really helped calm the wife who
was understandably upset when
she arrived.
Thank you Leah for showing us
all how it’s the small moments
that sometimes mean the most.

TEAM RVH celebrates with Premier
Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne (centre) recently announced approval for an Advanced Cardiac Centre at RVH. On hand to celebrate the exciting news was Wendi Koehler, Physiotherapist (left); Mandy

by RVH July 29 to sign autographs and help drive ticket sales.

I recently went to RVH for vascular surgery. I
want to thank everyone, including the volunteers,
for their kindness, understanding and assistance.
Everyone who I came in contact with were very
professional and caring.
I am very impressed with the level of care received at your hospital. I particularly want to
thank all my nurses on the Surgery Inpatient Unit.
Thank you to Sarah, Michelle, Lorraine, Brittany,
Glenn and Ruth for taking such good care of me.
I appreciate deeply your professionalism and
your dedication.
I also want to thank my surgeon Dr. Gowing
and Dr. Joey McDonald, as well as the entire surgical team. I was very worried and nervous about
this surgery and your caring ways made the
whole ordeal bearable.
I definitely give this hospital
five stars. Thank you again.

- Arthrogryposis Multiplex
Congenita—a
condition that
affects our
colleague
Robyn
Blagdon’s
son. AMC involves very
limited movement and stiff joints from birth, making for limited participation
in many activities of daily living. June 30 was AMC Day. Robyn and her family raised a flag at city hall with Barrie Mayor Jeff Lehman. In honour of AMC
Day, we all wore blue—the AMC colour—to raise awareness!

RVH’s Informatics and Technology Services
team are going ‘mobile’ as they launch a new
Mobile Service Desk on August 11.
The help desk will be located just outside Victoria’s Gift Shop on the second level and will be
staffed Monday to Friday: 9—10 a.m., 11:30 a.m.
—1 p.m. and again from 2:30 p.m.—3:30 p.m. If
you need a password reset, have a software
question or internet issues, you can stop by the
desk and get help—just as you would by calling
extension 45000.
The desk is also for patients and visitors if they
have questions regarding RVH’s Guest Wi-fi.
Watch for more information in the coming
weeks about the Mobile Service Desk and find
out how you can win a prize for stopping by the
desk.

Meet RVH’s Wellness Champions
RVH’s Wellness Champions—Laurie Ruyter, Amber McGarvey, Donna Danyluk, Daryl Kwapis, Leslie McArthur; Sarah Reistetter, Bryan Berry, Samantha

Henderson—are committed to helping members of TEAM RVH on the path to
wellness.
This new team consists of people with many different levels of wellness and
fitness, but the one thing they all have in common is a passion to promote
work-life balance and a healthy lifestyle. They can often be found in the Wellness Centre and are there to encourage and support others on the journey to
wellness.
Staff are encouraged to seek out their champions to find out about the great
programs being offered, and share their feedback about what they like about
RVH’s wellness program, as well as their suggestions for improvement.
“This program will create a network of energetic and motivated ‘champions’
who have made health and wellness a priority in their life, willing to serve as
team leaders for their respective work areas,” says Iris Laycock, Health and
Wellness Coordinator. “These Champions will serve as an extension of the
RVH health and wellness team, offering encouragement and support to their
own teams to improve their health and wellness, as well as participate in
events to assist them. Our champions will meet quarterly to provide insight,
feedback and discuss the promotion of health and wellness initiatives offered
at RVH.”
Each month in the Royal Review, we will share the story of one of the Wellness Champions, in the hope of inspiring others to make their own health a
priority.
“I’m excited about being able to promote health and wellness more broadly
throughout the health centre with people who are just as
passionate about healthy living as I am,” says Iris as she
shares her enthusiasm about the new team. “I know they
will share the personal benefits of making health a priority
with others, and how being healthy ultimately benefits the
patients entrusted to our care.”

Hit the Greens for RVH!
First Media, a division of Heart of Business Marketing Suites,
brings the first annual Celebration of Angels Charity Golf
Tournament on Wednesday, August 26 to Bear Creek Golf
Club. Registration is just $150 per person or $500 per foursome, with all proceeds supporting advanced cardiac care at
RVH. There are great prizes including $25,000 hole in ones,
and the first 100 registrants will be entered to win a full 2016

KICX 106 recently presented the Outlaws and Outsiders Tour in support of Radio for Cardiology. The concert featured country superstars
Aaron Pritchett, Cory Marquardt, King and Cash, and Barrie’s own
Kansas Stone. By purchasing tickets at RVH, some members of
TEAM RVH were lucky enough to win backstage passes to meet the

Julie Dewhurst is the new Manager of the
Geriatric Inpatient Unit. Julie comes to RVH
from Georgian Bay General Hospital (GBGH),
where she led a large team of interprofessional staff in numerous areas in the hospital. Julie joins RVH with 18
years of healthcare experience, and has a solid background in geriatrics, long-term care, mental health and
acute medicine. Julie is an RN and is
currently working on completing a Masters of Health Studies.
Lesley Craig, a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)
at RVH, has accepted the role of Simulation
Specialist. Lesley will work in this new position part-time and the remainder as an RRT.
As the Simulation Specialist, she will play a
key role in the advancement of RVH’s Simulation program working with frontline staff to
develop clinical scenarios which enhance
education and improve safety.
Retirement
Anne Macfarlane is retiring from the
Pre Surgery Treatment Clinic after 27
years with RVH and 40 years as a RN
both in Canada and the U.S. Anne’s last
day is today (July 31)! In her retirement,
she plans to spend more time with family,
but will miss all the wonderful people at
RVH that she’s met along the way.

Infection Control. This accomplishment was
achieved by taking a
course, gathering practical
experience and writing a
final exam. The credentials,
given out by the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology in the
U.S., signify an internationally-recognized level of knowledge
of and commitment to patient safety through infection control.
Iris Laycock recently received the
Employee Campaign Coordinator
Spirit Award (for organizations
with 2,000+ employees) at the annual United Way of Great Simcoe
County Awards Ceremony. Iris has
been RVH’s United Way Campaign
Coordinator for five years and has
helped raise nearly $153,000 for the
United Way and the charities it supports. RVH was also nominated in
the categories of Outstanding Employee Campaign and Ambassador
of the Year – Corey Robin (Surgery Inpatient Unit).
