Meet the Doc
A new feature about
RVH’s physicians
Dr. Anwar Parbtani, Family &
Palliative Care Physician
For Dr. Parbtani, the idea of
service came long before he
became a physician. Coming
from a family of 10 children in
Africa, he didn’t have the financial resources to fly home
in the summer as he was
completing his undergraduate
degree in India. Instead, he
spent his summers building
dams in remote, rural communities. As part of a group led
by a charitable organization,
he would spend his evenings
having dinner with local families. He was fascinated by
how, despite the extreme
poverty they endured daily,
their hearts were so big and
they gave so generously.
“You felt like they were the
richest group of people. It was
an honour to know them and
work with them.”
Dr. Parbtani believes that “To
be in service is an opportunity
and is a gift from God.”
Social Committee members (from left) Jen Speers, CT Technologist, Gill Hall, CT Technologist, Lisa Girard, Interventional Radiology Technologist, and (not pictured) Anne Abbott, Ultrasound Sonographer and Jackie Starodub, Patient Services Clerk, turned Action
Planning into fun planning.
People
Satisfaction comes from action!
The third Employee and Physician Experience Survey is fast approaching—it
will be mailed to your home addresses
on September 3 and emailed to you as
well. This confidential survey is an incredibly valuable tool or ‘barometer’ to
gauge your level of satisfaction, engagement and trust in this organization.
As part of the follow-through from the
first and second surveys, many teams
developed “Action Plans”. These plans
included items that each team wanted
to change or implement to improve their
workspace, improve communication or
trust, enhance patient safety to name a
few.
To-date, 377 action plan items have
been submitted by 55 different departments. 160 Action Plans are 100 per
cent complete another 71 are 75 per
cent complete; 72 are 50 per cent complete and 40 are 25 per cent. This
leaves 33 that have not been started yet.
Get involved in the implementation of
your team’s Action Plan—there’s still
time to be part of positive change.
As part of their departmental Action Plan,
Imaging Services chose to work on Team
Building and promoting a positive work environment. Their solution was to form a
social committee to organize fun events
that would get the team out of the hospital
environment and, hopefully, create a
greater sense of camaraderie among department members.
“With a 30 per cent increase in staff over
the last year, we thought organizing a social committee to plan team events would
be a great idea,” says Heather Gillis, Director, Imaging Services. “These out-of-theoffice functions allow us to get to know
each other better and that in turn translates
into better work relationships.”
So far the department has enjoyed a
bowling night, potluck dinners, TGIF gettogethers and catered lunches.
This Action Plan success story goes to
show how department plans don’t need to
be complicated. Simple and cost-effective
ideas can have a huge impact.
Remember—the survey arrives September 3 and we want to hear from you.

Moving & improving MHAP Out of the Blue
News from the RVH Auxiliary
RVH’s Mental Health and Addictions Program (MHAP) is
focused on a clear goal - improve access to care for the
patient and client population it serves. And to do so, they
realigned resources to expand clinical programming, gain
efficiencies and improve patient and staff satisfaction.
“In keeping with the Recovery Model, the MHAP has
moved towards the establishment of a comprehensive continuum of care that will support the recent growth of its Inpatient Program,” says Cara Vaccarino, Interim Director
MHAP. “Our ‘moving and improving’ philosophy will guide
us in continuing to build and develop an excellent mental
health and addictions program that will improve access to
care for patients and present opportunities for staff. We
also will be embracing continuous learning with a longerterm goal of establishing an academic residency training
program for psychiatry.”
So what’s new in MHAP? Focus on the inpatient unit has
been placed on enhancing the clinical program, incorporating best practice group interventions as well as improving
medical care and standardizing discharge planning. Outpatient services have been consolidated to include the establishment of a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), structured outpatient care and a transitional case management
service. To achieve this program re-design, the former
Mental Health Support Service (MHSS), located offsite on
Wellington Street, was co-located to RVH in order to coordinate services more effectively. Under the common auspices of Outpatient Services, MHSS will no longer provide
long-term case management that essentially duplicates
services provided by the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA). Instead, the MHAP provides transitional care
to help patients navigate the system so they don’t “fall
through the cracks” when discharged from hospital.
The new PHP serves as a step-down from inpatient care
and as an alternative to hospital admission. Patients transition from PHP when necessary, to traditional outpatient
services where they may continue to see a psychiatrist or
clinician for a period of time.
Addiction Services previously involved a short-stay, withdrawal management program with limited opportunity for
patients to secure a foundation for recovery prior to discharge. To better meet the growing complexity of patient
needs, the service has increased its length-of-stay up to 21
days and focuses more consistently on concurrent disorders. Medical coverage will also be secured on a regular
and permanent basis to support treatment options, decrease risk for the hospital and improve patient and staff
satisfaction. Filling community gaps in service is essential
for this vulnerable population, many of whom wait months
for longer term treatment options across the province.
Lots of moving and improving in MHAP— focusing on
how they can, “Make each life better. Together.”

At the RVH Auxiliary’s General Meeting on May 29, Barb
Hambley and Bruce Steinmiller, co-convenors of the Nevada
Lottery ticket program, presented a cheque for $20,000 to
Hilary Rodrigues, Vice President Finance & CFO— the profit
from the program for 2012.
The Hospital Equipment Lottery Project for People
(H.E.L.P.P.) is a lottery program set up for hospitals in 1989.
The money was used by the Outpatient Cardiac Diagnostics Echo Lab to purchase an Echo Bed. Tracy Houghton,
manager Cardiac Care Unit (CCU), and Connie Prior, Cardio
Respiratory nurse, showed the Auxiliary members the bed
and thanked them for the donation. The Echo Bed is designed for optimal imaging while providing patient and sonographer comfort and safety. This table has improved on-axis
imaging, faster through-put and helps to protect the sonographers from injuries with improved procedure ergonomics.

From our Patients
Recently we had an unfortunate
event happen. This situation
caused my husband to be admitted to hospital. There was
one major person who helped us when we
had to admit him. It was not a nurse, it was
not a doctor, it was not a volunteer. It was a
security guard, Sidney Over. Sid has this
calming nature about him that totally put my
husband at ease and he followed Sid into
the hospital room trusting him completely. This man saved us by going above
and beyond to help us. If I had not gotten
my husband help that day, I don't know
where we would be right now.
Now, two weeks later I am visiting with
my husband and Sid walks by. I wave to
him; he comes right into the room to say
hello, remembered who we were and shook
my husband’s hand and said, 'I'm happy to
see you doing so much better Sean!' He
remembered my husband’s name. He took
the time to come in and say hello and to
shake our hands. This security guard is my
hero. He will always be remembered in my
thoughts. Your security team plays a much
bigger part at your hospital than you
know. Thank you to the person with the
foresight to hire this man. Thank you Sid!
