Royal Review March 31 2016 - Royal Victoria Regional Health
Royal Review March 31, 2016 Board of Directors’ Awards of Excellence RVH to start its own pet therapy program with Canada geese Special submitted by Loof Lirpa As part of RVH’s commitment to value people, we offer many health and wellness programs. A recent initiative at Georgian College was so successful in reducing students’ stress we decided to introduce a similar idea for RVH staff. The college brought puppies in to the school so stressed students could spend some time with the adorable pups. Starting tomorrow, RVH will offer a gosling petting program. As you are aware at this time of year there are many geese on our property and plenty of babies. With the support of our friends at the Elmvale Zoo, RVH will set up a pen near the helipad where we will corral the goslings. The Elmvale Zoo also donated three 25-cent feeding machines, stocked with appropriate gosling food, so that you can not only pet the fuzzy little geese, but feed them too. It is recommended that you wear rubber boots and gloves for your own sanitation and protection. The petting pen will be open from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. daily so you can bring your children. See page 4 for more... The winners of RVH Board of Directors’ Awards of Excellence were honoured during a special town hall on March 24. March 31, 2016 RVH Royal Review A word from our patients I was admitted to Surgery 3 with a small bowel obstruction. I felt very out of sorts and just wanted to get better and go home. The following individuals helped me feel safe, respected and cared for and I wanted to send along my thanks to them. Dr. Michele Riordon for my initial examination and plan of care before being sent to Surgery 3 from the ER. (and as a side note - for helping to de-tangle me from my IV) My nurses: Lisa, Shannon, Amber, Taylor and Michele. Thank you to all of you for being there for me. Catherine - Catherine came to my room each day to draw blood - I'm not certain whether she is a part of Surgery 3, but I wanted her to know I appreciated how painlessly and quickly she performed this procedure. I also want to thank Bree for keeping my room spotlessly clean and for having a great sense of humour - thank you. If there are any other angels who may have been at my side and who I have forgotten to mention, please accept my apologies. I hold the utmost respect and admiration for all of you - you perform brilliantly in spite of all that goes on around you. I am very thankful you were the angels by my side. Patricia Q. RVH launches Power of Team videos series RVH recently launched its new video series Power of Team in which, RVH President and CEO Janice Skot plays a roving reporter, interviewing members of TEAM RVH. These videos are important reminders that it’s the people within the organization that make RVH so great. Check out the first video on the home page of the intranet and look forward to new episodes every few weeks. Simcoe County Hospital Alliance Members of Simcoe County Council were thanked by members of the Hospital Alliance for their ongoing, generous support of area hospitals and their commitment to bringing care closer to home. County council has committed $30 million to hospitals over the past decade, $20 million of which went to help build RVH’s expansion. In-centre Dialysis open house On March 30 and 31, staff from RVH’s Dialysis team hosted an open house in the new in-centre dialysis clinic, located on Level 1, in the same space as the Medicine Treatment Clinic. The new six-bed clinic was developed in partnership with the Regional Kidney Care Program and will start providing renal care on April 4. Patients from the Alliston and Barrie area who require closer monitoring, or who are hospitalized, will receive their dialysis in this new clinic, saving them a transfer or transport to Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital. Touring the new space is (from left) Debbie Brazeau, RPN, patient Catherine Scier and Roxanne Krystia, Manager. On April 1, there will be a staff open house where you can tour the space from11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Page 2 Inspiring care... You are not alone. This often underestimated, yet time-consuming task can be a barrier to productivity and efficiency, particularly for mobile workers. Great news! New functionality is available to help address the needs of RVH staff working in our busy mobile environment. Impressive new features: Receive and manage voice messages directly from Outlook Access to voicemail, email and calendar from any telephone with great time saving functionality and voice commands Interactive Service Catalog allowing staff to view available offerings from all participating departments Service Desk Portal All staff will soon have access to a “one stop shop” which will allow for a self-service option (see photo below). Effective May 2016, RVH staff and physicians can access the new and easyto-use Service Desk portal to submit any non-urgent IT, CIA and new Facilities requests automatically (replacing the need to enter facilities/maintenance requisitions in MEDITECH). Exciting features include: Review and track submitted requests, including active, resolved and closed (service tickets) requests Search for knowledge articles, using keywords, to assist with day-to-day workflows (articles can be rated to assist ITS and facilities in improving existing documents and “favourited” for easy access) Worx Home Worx Home is our new portal or “launchpad” to our internal RVH applications and resources. In order to ensure we meet best practices related to privacy and security, deliver improved integration, provide added features and app’s such as our in real-time “Hospital Census”. This update will bring numerous improvements to our mobile application and service delivery. WorxMail As part of the “Worx Application Productivity Suite”, this enables mobile phone holders to manage email, calendars and contacts on supported mobile phones or tablets seamlessly. Inspiring care... On March 30, RVH and the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka officially launched the Healthy Hearts program. This is a partnership between the two organizations to ensure cardiac patients from throughout North Simcoe Muskoka now have access to rehabilitation services in the community. Specifically, Healthy Hearts focuses on low-risk patients who do not need to participate in a hospital-based program and patients who have been transitioned from RVH’s rehabilitation program. “These programs are extremely important in reducing both the risk of death and of a subsequent cardiac episode,” says Dr. Mohammed Haqqi, Cardiologist and Cardiac Rehabilitation Lead at RVH. Cardiac rehabilitation is a supervised program which includes an individualized exercise plan, nutrition counselling, smoking cessation, and stress management.
