2009-2010 Annual Report February 1, 2009 - January 31, 2010 PARTNERS IN HOPE w w w. a l s p h i l a d e l p h i a . o r g Leading the fight to treat and cure ALS through global research and nationwide advocacy while also empowering people with Lou Gehrig’s Disease and their families to live fuller lives by providing them with compassionate care and support. Partners in HOPE On the cover – ALS patient Margaret Frantz of York, PA is presented with her Comfort Shawl by Barbara Gascho, RN, CPN, Pastoral Care Counselor at The Hershey ALS Association Clinic and Research Center. These shawls are often used as spiritual intervention in our ALS Clinics. They are knitted or crocheted by anyone offering this healing support to another person. Often a previous recipient such as a caregiver makes the shawl for a patient. For some it becomes a prayer shawl. Says one recipient, “Every day the shawl is there to remind me that I am not alone.” Diana Metcalf was a talented horticulturist who developed not only her own beautiful gardens, but also designed and tended to the magnificent gardens of others in the Philadelphia region, A devoted wife and mother, ALS cut short Diana’s life in March of 2009. Diana’s legacy is her book, Diana’s Gardens, which features beautiful photographs by Jane Ruffin as shown above. Dear Partners in Hope, We understand that no one organization does anything alone. We know that it is only with your partnership - our supporters, sponsors, donors, and volunteers - that we are able to accomplish PALS*/** Richard Kanter receives a kiss from his son at the 2009 Annual Luncheon where Dick was honored. such an enormous mission. Your generosity enables The ALS Association, Greater Philadelphia Chapter to achieve great outcomes. Thank you for strengthening this remarkable organization. Powell ALS Patient Services Program T he Greater Philadelphia Chapter proudly offers comprehensive support and resources free of charge for patients diagnosed with ALS and their families and caregivers through the Lea R. Powell ALS Patient Services Program. We strive to provide assistance to patients and members of their support network struggling with issues related to ALS. The average annual cost of caring for an ALS patient is $250,000. Your contributions assist PALS* in a variety of ways. Patient Care ALS Certified Centers – At each center, patients and caregivers are seen by up to 12 specialists. The Clinics are multidisciplinary centers for the evaluation and treatment of ALS and related disorders. The clinics establish a definitive diagnosis in patients referred for the disease and once a diagnosis is established, provide care in a supportive and understanding environment which will enable the patient to attain the best possible level of neurological functioning and the best possible quality of life. In fiscal year 2010, there were 693 patient visits to The Susan Walsh, RN, ACNS-BC ALS Association Cergreets PALS* /** Barb Menges tified Center at the who responds on her Dynavox VMax at the Hershey Clinic. Penn Comprehensive Neuroscience Center at Pennsylvania Hospital and 431 visits to the ALS Clinic at Penn State Hershey Medical Center. There are currently 3 clinical studies enrolling patients in Hershey and 4 at Penn. Affiliate ALS Treatment Centers: We also provide support for two additional clinics in our service region. One is located at the Lehigh Valley Hospital and the other at Geisinger Medical Center. *PALS – person(s) with ALS *ALSA – The ALS Association – National Organization Assistance The Lea R. Powell Program offers an array of educational, recreational, patient care, family assistance and outreach programs for ALS families. Home Care: • The Howard I. Abrams In-Home Care Program provided up to 12 hours of regular weekly care for patients living at home. 109 patients were served with 24,167 hours of care. • Respite Care programs offered caregivers of 40 patients a total of 1,050 hours for non-ventilator patients. Additionally 7 ventilator dependent patients received a total of 504.25 hours of care.. The Marjorie Shimer Equipment Loan Program loaned a total of 580 items including medical equipment such as wheelchairs, hospital beds and other durable medical equipment. This encompassed our entire broad service area. The Clinic at Pennsylvania Hospital generated over 62 referrals for wheelchairs alone. The Scott A. Mackler, MD, PhD Assistive Technology Program addresses our patients’ communications needs.. It loaned over 75 items and 35 evaluations were conducted at Pennsylvania Hospital by Alisa Brownlee, the Assistive Technology Specialist (ATP). These evaluations represented over $200,000 worth of equipment for PALS. This Clinic made over 25 referrals to the Veterans Administration (VA) for augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), computer access, and wheelchair evaluations. Evaluations are made at the Hershey Clinic as well. Additionally, Ms. Brownlee speaks frequently about the state of this field for the Alisa Brownlee, ATP Chapter and our National Organization, ALSA, and conducts in-service educational programs for healthcare professionals. Ms. Brownlee is only one of eight specialists working for an ALS Chapter in the role of assistive technologist. Because of Ms. Brownlee’s support from the Chapter she has a great impact on PALS across the country and over the last few years she has become the “go to” AT person nationally. She is the “Ask the Expert” on the ALSA Website so patients worldwide can e-mail her with their AT questions. 3 ALSA is currently partnering with other organizations to increase The ALS Association’s impact on ALS through these assistive technology programs: a. AAC/AT consultation program through Dyna Vox Technologies provides access by Chapter, clinic and center staff members, as well as people with ALS and families, to the information and education regarding communication needs. b. Hatachi of Japan and the Georgia Institute of Technology for FDA clinical trial testing efficacy of Brain Computer Interface Devices for use by people with ALS who are completely incapable of communicating to do so. Presently Scott Mackler, MD, PhD of Delaware is one of the few PALS able to use this complex, but effective, system. “My job is to use technology to get an ALS patient communicating so they can be an active participant in their family and community life, be more independent, and make medical decisions….Electronic AAC devices range in price from $4,000$10,000 – most providing insurers will pay 80% of that cost, leaving a 20% co-pay for families – that is why your support is so valued. No matter what the challenge for people with ALS, there are solutions out there and we are here to help.” Inservice Programs: Educational In-service Programs were provided by staff to assist health care workers caring for ALS patients on 43 occasions. Resources and Seminars helped patients and their caregivers better understand and cope with the diagnosis of ALS. Programs included 6 Newly Diagnosed programs, 13 monthly resource groups throughout the region and 1 Bereavement Group which provide an outlet to address questions and concerns, and share experiences with others. A record 93 PALS participated in the 3 Managing ALS teleconferences. Recreation Programs included ALS family trips to Longwood Gardens with 135 attendees, 83 PALS and their families visited Morey’s Piers in Wildwood, NJ and the Annual Holiday Party drew 183 guests who enjoyed music by Hot Hot Hot Entertainment, caricatures, food, fun, gifts and games. Specialty Programs Caregivers Skills Day Alisa Brownlee, ATP, Clinical Manager, Assistive Technology Services, ALSA and Greater Philadelphia Chapter 27 caregivers attended this special program for family members and learned tips to assist in caring for a loved one with ALS. The Cox Family Fund for Accessibility assisted 72 patients with stair glides, ramping, and emergency call systems at no or reduced cost to them. Ventilator Conference Transportation Program The Chapter’s three wheelchair-accessible vans made 231 trips transporting patients and their caregivers to medical appointments and clinic visits. Two vans are ventilator accessible. We also subcontract for wheelchair accessible transportation for patients living outside of a 60 mile radius from the Chapter Office in Ambler, PA. 4 Education Scott Mackler* and Lynn SnyderMackler at the annual fundraising run/walk bearing his name. 29 patients, caregivers and family members attended this vital conference which provides comprehensive information about ventilator dependency in individuals with ALS. Visiting Volunteer Program Established in 2002, this program provides a “friendly visitor” to a person with ALS in his/her home to read books, share common interests, write letters, run errands, make phone calls, use computer software and more. Nineteen volunteers visited with patients regularly. Van Driver, John Conner, drove PALS* Vincenza Grillo to the Annual ALS Holiday Party for patients and families. Susan Schwartz, ACSW, LSW, explains special needs of ALS patients to staff working with an ALS patient at the Statesman Nursing Home in Levittown, PA. ALS Research Update………… Hope for Tomorrow A t the end of 2008, Time magazine named ALS research using a patient’s own skin cells as the science story of that year. This discovery and many more were the focus of research in 2009. Among the many research accomplishments were: • The identification of a new gene, ALS6, responsible for 5% of all inherited ALS cases • The start of the first ever stem cell trial in ALS patients in the U.S. • The anti-sense trial, designed to “turn off” the production of unwanted mutant SOD1 linked to 20% of familial ALS. • The ramping up of the Ceftriaxone trial. • The continuation of the Knopp Neurosciences Phase 2 trial. At our ALS Association Center at the University of Pennsylvania’s Comprehensive Neuroscience Center, Drs. McCluskey and Elman, genetics counselor Dana Falcone, and Katelin Hoskins, Nurse Research Coordinator are involved in numerous studies and are partnering with Drs. John Trojanowski and Virginia Lee at Penn’s Center for Neurodegenerative Research. Lucie Bruijn, PhD, ALSA Chief Scientist Research and Development, was a key speaker at the Chapter’s October 2009 Research Symposium.. At our ALS Center at Hershey Medical Center, Drs. Zachary Simmons and James Connor continue their outstanding ALS research work along with research coordinator Helen Elizabeth Stephens and research assistant Ally Brothers. The Hershey team, led by ALS Clinic Nurse Specialist and Regional Nurse Coordinator Susan Walsh, focus on the importance of quality of life issues. The United States government has an extremely active role in ALS research, continuing funding for the ALS Registry which is managed by the Centers for Disease Control. In addition, the ALS Research Program is benefitting from the $5 million appropriated to fund the ALS Research Program at the Department of Defense. Duane Wallace and his wife, PALS* Valarie attended the Symposium. As we look ahead to the ALS research effort in 2010, we do so with much anticipation. For up to date research information, log onto www.alsphiladelphia.org and click on research. 5 ALS Advocacy A 2009 EVENTS dvocacy for research, health & long-term care, and caregiver support are among the top priorities of the Advocacy Department of The ALS Association, which provides people with ALS and their families an active and strong voice in the Nation’s Capital and State Capitals across the country. Each year, the ALS Association hosts a Public Policy Conference and Advocacy Day in Washington, DC, to give people with ALS and their families an opportunity to present the ALS case to their legislators. In 2009, the event drew hundreds of PALS, caregivers and family members, including over 50 from the Greater Philadelphia Chapter. FEBRUARY In addition, the Greater Philadelphia Chapter and Western Pennsylvania Chapter are working together to seek funding and support from the state of Pennsylvania. The Chapters join at the annual ALS Awareness Day in Harrisburg and advocates make regular trips to the Capitol throughout the year. MARCH • Billy Lake Beef and Beer • Philadelphia Fight Concert • 4-0n-4 For A Cure • Hot Chocolate • Strike 3 ALS Walk/Run In the past year, The ALS Association successfully advocated for: An additional $6 million for the national ALS registry at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which may become the single largest ALS research project ever created. The funding is a 20% increase over last year, bringing total funding for the registry to nearly $16 million. We secured a 50% increase in funding for the ALS Research Program (ALSRP) at the Department of Defense (DOD), as Congress provided $7.5 million for the program this year. The ALSRP is the only ALS specific program at DOD and is focused on translational research with the explicit goal of finding a treatment for ALS. In FY 2009, more than 2,000 military veterans with ALS, their families and survivors were awarded benefits totaling over $129 million! These benefits include monthly disability compensation, adaptive housing grants, aid and attendant benefits, and full health care. This is the result of historic regulations the Association helped to champion that establish ALS as a service connected disease. The regulations do not expire so benefits will continue to be available to veterans with ALS and their survivors regardless of the date of diagnosis or death. For the second consecutive year, Congress appropriated an additional $2.5 million for respite care, bringing total funding for respite to $5 million over the past two years. The funding is available to states on a competitive grant basis and will be used to expand the ability of states to support local respite care programs available to people with ALS and other diseases. On April 23, 2009 a hearing was held in Harrisburg, PA in which patients, family and staff were present. 6 Hot Chocolate is enjoyed by (left to right) Tom Hipp, Deb Fineran, Gerry Voit, PALS* Kathryn Voit and Tom Ricci. The entire organization works year-round to raise funds and awareness for ALS. The highlight of the year is the Annual Phillies Phestival, which raised a record $867,670 in 2009 for ALS research and patient services. To date the team has raised $11 million for the Chapter. Phillies Pitcher Cole Hamels (Left) and his wife Heidi, meet PALS* Gary Temoyan and his sons Tyler and Joey at the 2009 Phestival. Curt and Shonda Schilling “So for those very people (PALS and their families) we stand here and offer our sincere thank you, but also want to ensure that you all know we are accepting this on their behalf, for it’s on their shoulders we stand and it’s on their work we fight, battle every day…” From the Schillings ALSA Hall of Fame Induction Speech The Schillings became involved with the Chapter in the early 1990’s when the young Phillie pitcher met PALS Dick Bergeron. They began two very important fund raising events – Curt’s Pitch for ALS and the Curt Schilling Golf Outing. Since that time, Curt and Shonda moved on to Arizona and Boston, and even though Curt is now a retired ballplayer, their hearts remain with The ALS Association. In May 2009, Curt and Shonda were inducted into the ALS Association’s Hall of Fame and received the award during a special ceremony at the National ALS Advocacy Day and Public Policy Conference.
