MEETING OF SOURASHTRA
NOWRIN / NOWRAN WITH PARENTS
The 20th Jadhaga Parivarthanai Mela of KUSO Marriage Bureau was held on Sunday,
23.03.2014 at 10.30 AM at Kumara Vyasa Mandapam, Rajajinagar 4th Block, Bangalore-10.
With the prayer song by Smt. Saroja, KUSO Gen. Secretary Sri T.S. Jayabalan
announced the start of the proceedings of the Mela. Smt. Malini, Madurai, Smt. Chandra,
Chennai, Smt. Kumuda, Trichy, Smt. Saranya, Salem and Smt. Gowri, Kolar had lighted the
lamp to symbolize the commencement.
Being the Chairman of the Mela, KUSO President Sri V.G. Gopalakrishnan explained the
procedures followed to conduct this Mela. He had suggested to the parents to follow simple
formalities in settling the marriage alliance for their children i.e., to avoid too much scrutiny of
horoscopes and to avoid unnecessary expenditures that are now-a-days incurred to conduct
a marriage. He had also insisted to have intercity marriages forgetting the minor differences
existing among our people who live scattered in different cities and towns owing to their
business and employment.
A large number of applicants, most of them are graduates, working in public sector, govt.
and private institutions, had participated with their parents. KUSO Advisor Sri K.V. Pathy,
Former President Sri K.R. Kalidoss, Vice-President Sri B.R. Surendran, Treasurer
Sri K.K. Devadoss Babu, Joint Treasurer Sri R.R. Baskar, Secretary

Babies cry at night
To stop parents from Trying for another
Washington: Babies who wake up at night to breast feed
may be actually trying to delay the birth of a sibling, a new
study suggests. According to the research, infant's
tendency to wake up in the night may have been a tactic to
make mothers breast feed more, thus reducing their fertility
and limiting the number of siblings that will be born, which
in turn improved a child's chances of survival.
Researchers argue that infants that wake frequently at
night to breast feed are delaying the resumption of the
mother's ovulation and therefore preventing the birth of a
sibling with whom they would have to compete.
It has already been documented that smaller gaps
between the births of siblings are associated with
increased mortality of infants and toddlers, especially in
environments where resources are scarce and where infectious disease rates are high,
resources said. Professor David Haig from the Harvard University believes that the benefits
of delay are such that the selective forces are strong enough to have engendered a
significant evolutionary response.

KNOW OUR ADVISOR – PATHY !
FIRST SOURASHTRA WEAVER - TURNED - ENGINNER IN U.S.A.
Sri K.V. Pathy (Krishnaiyen
Venkatachalapathy–named after the
deity of Oppiliappan Koil) was born on
15th August, 1932 at Kumbakonam,
Tanjore District, Tamilnadu to 'Lambian'
Sri L.B. Krishnaiyen and
Smt. Nannammal. He had two younger
brothers also.
His schooling began in a
'thiNNaippaLLikkuudam' run by a
sourashtra teacher (known as 'chovD
vaththiaar' as he was hard of hearing
but was a very strict disciplinarian). One
day Pathy's ear was twisted by the
teacher, so he was changed to Amman
Koil Paadasaalai where he completed his 5th class (always first rank in the class). His
education was discontinued because his father wanted him to earn some money to assist the
poor family. He worked as a clerk in a raw silk shop of his maternal uncle. After a little gap, he
was directly admitted to 7th class instead of 6th in the Town High School with double
promotion as his teacher and his uncle wanted him to continue his studies. He continued his
study with much difficulty reading with the help of kerosene lamps as there was no electricity
in his house. He stood always first in his class and got merit scholarships which covered half
of his tuition fee. The other half was waived due to his being from OBC. His relatives and well
wishers helped him to get the needed text books. He also worked sometime as a silk saree
weaving assistant (Sikide pillo) to earn some money. He also did Khadi spinning with a
Charkha which he learned owing to the influence of Mahatma Gandhi. He learned Hindi and
passed upto Rashtra Bhashaa Praveshika which helped him when he got appointment in
North / East India on a later stage.
He completed SSLC with first rank and was awarded the coveted 'Miller Medal' in 1949.
He had won medals and prizes in almost all subjects throughout his high school period.

Sri Venkatram was writing it.
He had to face more struggles to

the poor condition of his family. There were many other poor boys like him who struggled to
be in school. This time his maternal grand uncle, who had no issues, came to his rescue. His
uncle sold out his small house to finance his study in Kumbakonam Govt. College for

When Pathy was studying 10th standard his mother passed away and his aunt ('phuyi'
/baiamba'), being a widow with no issues, came forward to his rescue and his two young

He had later secured a 'Merit' seat in the College of Engineering, Guindy, Madras

Swimming, Rowing and Volley ball etc. He worked in College Canteen Committee and
Hostel Welfare Committee. He passed B.E. in Mech. Engineering in 1955 with Honours and
high rank. He got a job in Tamilnadu P.W.D. at Amaravathi Reservoir Project near Udumalpet
with a salary of Rs.100/- (!) even before his degree results came out.
After a few months, he wanted to write the I.R.S.E. exam., and to facilitate the
preparation, he joined his Alma Mater, the College of Engineering, Guindy as Asst. Instructor
in Mech. Engineering. At the end of the academic year, he changed over again to the
Tamilnadu Highways Dept. Central Workshops.
In the meantime, he got married in 1956 to Sow. Pramila, a girl from Madurai (an inter-city
wedding which was rare in those days). His bride was a daughter of Sri A.R.P. Sarathy,
founder of Sarathy Handloom Textiles Factory at Madurai.
Meanwhile he had attended some interviews for better jobs. He got selected as a
Graduate Engineer Trainee for the Rourkela Steel Plant (the then Hindustan Steel Ltd.).
Steel Industry in India got a big boost with three Steel Plants being set up at Rourkela (Orissa)
by West Geramany, Durgapur Steel Plant (West Bengal), by U.K. and Bhilai Steel Plant by
Russia. Based an agreement to train Indian Engineers in U.S. Plants reached between the
Prime Minister Nehru and President Eisenhower, Pathy was selected in the first batch of
trainees to train in the U.S.A. After a few months of orientation training at Tata Iron and Steel
Co., Jamshedpur, this batch was sent to USA under the Ford Foundation 'Indian Steel
Training and Educational Program (INSTEP)'. He was sent to Bethlehem Steel Plant,
Pennsylvania. The training in various departments of the Steel Plant was for 13 months.
Simultaneously, they were given theoretical courses at the Lehigh University in Steel
Metallurgy, Economics and related subjects.
It was a most exciting period in his life, according to Sri Pathy. During this period he
purchased a car (Ford 1950) for 100 dollars along with three other trainee engineers jointly
and they sold it for 50 dollars when they returned to India.
Upon completion of the training, they returned to Rourkela and were engaged in the
erection of the machineries of the Steel Plant along with German engineers.
When he returned to Kumbakonam after training in the USA, his friends, the
Kumbakonam Sourashtra Sabha and other organizations took him in a procession and
felicitated him as he was the first Sourashtrian from Kumbakonam to go to USA. It may be
Sri K.V.Pathy was the first Sourashtrian who stepped into the USA soil.
When working at Rourkela, he was transferred to the Fertilizer Dept. The equipments for
this Plant were supplied from U.K. and West Germany. He was deputed to these countries for
specialized training. He spent two months with the Engineers there in different Plants at West
Germany, Austria, Italy and U.K. He had opportunities to visit many cities including Bonn,
West Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, Vienna, London, Norwich, Colchester etc. He had
opportunities to participate in various Technical and Management Seminars, Courses and
Conferences at different places including Gujarat State Fertilizers, Vizag, Sindri and Kanpur
etc. He worked in the Steel Plant and also in the Fertilzer Plant attached to the Steel Plant at
Rourkela in various capacities for 15 years till 1971. He had a son when he was in USA and
two daughters while he was at Rourkela. KUSO feels proud to retain this 82 year young
Mech. Engineer to be its Advisor to guide in its social and community activities.
The report on his career from 1971 to date will appear in our next issues.

SUPPORT LEADS SUCCESS
The total success of a community oriented event or a function mostly depends upon the
total involvement and commitment of the people for whom such an event or a function is
conducted. KUSO has been conducting “Jadhaga Parivarthanai Melas” since 2004. We
have so far conducted 20 such ‘Melas’ twice in a year.
The response from the parents of “Nowrin / Nowran” is ever increasing and is very
encouraging for the organizers of KUSO. We are making elaborate advertisement by various
means. Wall posters are also prepared and arranged to be pasted in various big cities and
towns for which we get support and cooperation from various people. We take this
opportunity to thank the following personalities from different towns in Tamil Nadu, who have
come forward for lending assistance for distribution of notices and for pasting wall posters for
the 20th Jadhaga Parivarthanai Mela.
Members of KUSO and office bearers appreciate with gratitude, the efforts and the
contributions of the following Sourashtrans, towards the success of the ‘Mela’ held on 23rd
