Travelling to Honiton
Often referred to as the gateway to Devonshire, Honiton is nestled
adjacent to the River Otter, between two designated Areas of
Outstanding Natural Beauty. The surrounding hills and countryside
provide a stunning backdrop, and draw the focus on this significant
market town with historic character. It has traditionally provided rest
and diversion on the journeys of those travelling far and wide, and
remains a prime location with easy access.
Road
Located at the crossroads of the A30, A35,
A373 and A375, it is within easy reach of
the primary routes to the North, East and
West. The M5 motorway at junction 29 can
be reached by dual carriageway along
the A30 to Exeter (12 miles) or junction 28
(10 miles) along the A373 to Cullompton.
London or South East England is served
more directly by the A303 which seamlessly
joins the A30 some 6 miles north east of
Honiton.
The A35 affords easy access to the South
Coast and Channel ports providing a very
scenic alternative when heading east.
Rail
The centrally located Railway Station is on
the West of England Main Line between
London Waterloo and Exeter. Regular
services enable travel locally as well
as convenient journeys further
afield.

The close proximity and easy access
to Exeter International Airport (11
miles) increases links with National and

The A375 heads south for Sidmouth (10

Honiton - Gateway to the West
Around and about
Honiton stands in the south-east of the
county on the main road and rail routes
from London to Exeter.

Allhallows Lace Museum*
It is a pleasant, busy market town with
a growing population and provides
a prime shopping centre for a large
part of East Devon. Close to both the
Dorset and Somerset borders, recent
improvements to the A30/A303 trunk
road have attracted people to the
Honiton district.
Historically, the town was one of the
centres of the medieval West Country
cloth trade and later became famous
for its lace. There is an excellent
museum containing the main
collection of Honiton Lace, while the
High Street hosts specialist shops for
both antiques and pottery. The High
Street, wide enough to allow parking
on both sides, is lined with Georgian
buildings, many of which are former
coaching inns. Small courtyards and
alleyways leading off of the High Street
provide further compelling shopping.
Renowned for its antiques, Honiton’s
world-wide reputation is justified by the
large number of antique shops situated
in or near the High Street itself.
Honiton stands in delightful country
of rich farmland watered by the river
Otter and several of its tributaries.
Steep-sided hills rise between Honiton
and the sea, and narrow winding lanes
lead to villages that are as charming
and interesting as any in Devonshire,
providing many miles of footpaths that
offer wonderful walking opportunities
for the country-lover.
There is a local produce market
every Thursday between April and
December.

Events 2016
There are a number of highlights in all seasons
that reflect the traditions and customs associated
with the town, in particular Charter Day and the
Hot Pennies. Proud of its heritage and world-wide
renown, the people celebrate right from the heart
of the town, with regular festivals, markets and
carnivals in October and December.
In addition, there are a wide variety of shows and
rallies, including Honiton and District Agricultural
Show, which is noted as the largest and most
supported one day show of its kind in the country.
There is immense enthusiasm and warm welcome
awaiting visitors, who can find themselves drawn
back repeatedly throughout the year.
Hot Pennies
The earliest reference to a fair in the town
dates back to 1221 and was held on
Allhallows Day. In 1247 the fair was moved to
St. Margaret’s Day, July 20th.
This quirky tradition is opened by the Town
Crier carrying a floral pole atop with a
golden glove, said to represent that ‘when
the glove is up, no man shall be arrested until
the glove is down’.
Pennies warmed in ovens are thrown out
of various inns in the High Street to the
assembled crowds.

Honiton Country Market held every Friday 9.30 – 11.30am at the Mackarness Hall.
Honiton Local Producers Market held every Thursday between April and
December in the High St.
Various other markets are held on Thursdays throughout the year.
June 24 & 25 - Armed Forces Day. An overnight vigil from 6pm to 12.30pm next
day at the war memorial outside St. Paul’s church, Honiton. Then a tribute

July 23 - Classic Car Rally in conjunction with Honiton’s Market Charter Day,
held by the Honiton Lions at Allhallows Field. 10am - 4pm. Free admission.
July 23 - Honiton Market Charter Day Celebrating Honiton’s Market Charter, a
day of entertainment. The traditional market plus charity stalls, classic car rally
and much more.
July 23 - Band Concert on the Millennium Green, 7 pm.
July 26 - Honiton Hot Pennies Grab warm pennies that are thrown out of various
pubs and shops in the town to celebrate a very old tradition. Starts 12 noon in
the High Street.
August 4 - Honiton & District Agricultural Show at Honiton Showground. Gates

August 28 & 29 - Honiton Hill Rally, Smeatharpe Airfield, EX14 9RF. Traction

Ottery Moor Lane and proceeds through the High St.
December 2 - Carol Service 5.30, followed by the lighting of the Christmas Tree.

Honiton at 5.30pm.

Thelma Hulbert was born in Bath, Somerset in 1913. She studied at Bath
School of Art before moving to London in the early 1930s. She became
part of the influential Euston Road School of painters (founded in 1937)
alongside Victor Pasmore, William Coldstream and Claude Rogers.
After the war Thelma Hulbert taught at Camden School for Girls and found
a studio in Holland Park from which to paint. She continued her teaching
at Central School of Arts and Crafts until retirement, shortly followed by
a move to Honiton in 1984. Living alone in Elmfield House, Honiton she
continued to draw and paint until her death in February 1995.
Throughout her life, the subjects of her paintings were still life, domestic
interiors, and landscapes, many of which included the Cornish coast.
During her lifetime, Thelma Hulbert was represented in twenty three
exhibitions, eight of which were solo shows. The most prestigious of her
exhibitions was her one-woman show at the Whitechapel Art Gallery in
London in 1962.
Examples of her work are to be found in both public and private art
collections worldwide and she has been featured on radio and television.
Following her death, the Tate Gallery acquired two of Thelma Hulbert’s
works for their collection and featured her in the Tate Women Artists book
by Alicia Foster (now for sale in the THG Shop).

of Lace and Local Antiquities
In the town famous for lace making Allhallows Museum has the best collection of
Honiton lace in the world. Displays in two galleries feature exquisite examples of
16th to 20th century Honiton lace.
Other displays include Honiton Pottery; a mid Victorian furnished doll’s house;
palaeontology; children’s toys; war memorabilia, mementos of Allhallows School
and the Borough of Honiton; coins and trade tokens.
There are plenty of activities to amuse the children. A choice of four free
children’s quiz sheets are available, with a guaranteed prize on completion,
plus puzzles, books and an opportunity for everyone to try lace making.
