This gives the site a strategic position within Brussels’ urban configuration. The project is located inside the perimeter of Ninoofsepoort; an area that is about to face an important transformation due to the up-coming project of Parc de Ninove. Perimeter Future Project Ninoofsepoort Figure 1: Today “Place de Ninove is one of the key places along the petite centure that links the inner city with the canal, which gives it a strategic position within Brussels’ urban configuration. However, its spatial organization segmented in three long areas in combination with the non-qualitative vegetable barrier on its northern side and the strong presence of car parking in the surroundings limit the visual relation and spatial integration between the public space and the buildings around. This condition makes the square a place of transit instead one of permanence as well as restricts the social presence and visibility” PETIT CEINTURE SITE’S PREVIOUS CONDITIONS IMAGE 2 / Project Challenges In spite of the strategic location of Place de Ninove, the spatial organization of the square segmented in three long areas (1) and the strong presence of car parking in the surroundings (2) limited the visual relation and the spatial integration between this public space and the buildings around (3). This condition prevents the use of the space at its full potential: it makes the square a place of transit instead one of permanence, affecting its visibility in the Quartier. 2 1. “Place de Ninove is one of the key places along the petite centure that links the inner city with the canal, which gives it a strategic position within Brussels’ urban configuration. Contextualisation PROJECT DEVELOPMENT IMAGE 3 / Project Scheme The request of intervening the site without requiring an urbanism permit constitute one of the main challenges in the re-activation of this space. It was also one of the potentials of the project since it required a feasible action-oriented process and the effective establishment of the project priorities among all the participants. Thus, the project consisted in a physical intervention guided by a 6 months process of five ateliers and several intermediate sessions with the local inhabitants and other users of the space. It allowed the participants to exchange their experiences and knowledge in order to enrich the project with different perspectives. At the same time, an adoptive process of the site took place by the users. FEB 28 / WORKSHOP 1 TEAM NINOVE: Defining the roles of team members and participants. CDQD - BRUSSELS Participants: CONTRAT DE QUARTIER DURABLE VILLE DE BRUXELLES SEPT 11 / WORKSHOP 5 BACS NINOVE: Repairing the ‘Bacs à Fleurs’ and planting new species and flowers. UEC COMMITTEE Three phases structured the entired project construction: Planning, Design & Project Development and Construction Details. The last project phase was featured by two closure events in which all the participants could exchange their experiences as collaborators. The project documentation was a very important part of the entire process. The question of how to make the process more accesible, so participants could learn from this experience, was responded by means of a photographic record of each project phase. In addition to this, the representation of Place de Ninove and the participants of the project in a boardgame invited all to reflect on the construction process in a more playful and educational way. Micro Landscapes Furniture The concept originated on the idea of having a series of ‘micro-landscapes’ (different-sized green spots) in Place de Ninove (1). Then, the ideas of a group of self-organized neighbors of Ninove and the community of La Poudrière were incorporated, also the future up-coming projects were taking into account (2) as well as the results of the critical exercises about the potentials and weaknesses of the project site (3). The concept of the project was clear: to realize a central and convivial space along the Petite Ceinture. 100 cm 120 cm Bac aux plantes Aux arbres les citoyens 2015 Centre d’écologie urbaine / C.Q.D Jardin aux eurs / Voisins quartier Ninove Coordination generale et architecture: Diego Luna Quintanilla et Sedaile Mejias x 15 - In Steigerhout. This means that those elements that serve the purpose of having a meeting place were given priority. In this sense, the site proposal counted on 120 cm three main elements: - Wooden Platforms (1) : flexible to programme with different kind of activities. - Furniture (2) : as bancs and a pic-nic table, according to the suggestions of the neighbors. - Bacs à fleurs (3): recycled from a location nearby and relocated in Place de Ninove with the support of the CDQD, La Poudrière and Buurtwinkel. These 15 elements were further adopted by the kids of neighBac aux plantes borhood who will take care of them, their plants and flowers during the year. 40 cm 345 cm Realization RECYCLED WOOD PANELS FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE PLATFORMS SPONSORED PAINTING PRODUCTS OBTAINED BY NEIGHBORS’ OWN INICIATIVE ADOPTION OF THE BACS À FLEURS BY THE KIDS OF NINOVE RADIO EMISSION: Ninove en jeu, la participation des habitants dans un projet d’urbanisme - www.urban-ecology.be
