The Gorham
experience.
A classic New
England campus.
USM’s Residential Campus
Cited as ‘One of the Best in the Northeast’ by the Princeton Review, the University of
Southern Maine offers the best of both worlds—a university large enough to provide more than
100 areas of study, but small enough to support your unique career goals.
The Gorham experience provides the ideal setting for your first year where learning extends
beyond classroom walls. Close-knit living and learning communities such as the international
community in Philippi Hall, one-on-one advising and mentoring, and monthly international
student seminars are just a few of many examples of how the Gorham Experience has been
intentionally designed to ensure your time at USM is positive and academically successful.
Furthermore with Portland, the largest, most culturally diverse city in Maine only 20 minutes
down the road and Boston only 2 hours south, endless activities and opportunities are within
reach. Students regularly travel between Portland and Gorham to take courses or to participate
in campus activities—a commute made easy by the free Wi-Fi enabled USM shuttle.

The true American
liberal arts experience
in a professionally-focused environment
USM proudly embraces a hands-on learning model in all programs;
it is the true undergraduate liberal arts experience. The student
programming applies lessons through internships, service learning
projects and project-based learning activities. USM students are
involved in interdisciplinary activities where creativity is used to
inform science. Projects are student driven with faculty oversight.
Lynn Kuzma explains, “USM is all about the student and their learning experience.”

Hands-On Work Experience
Full-time USM international students are eligible to apply for Curricular Practical Training (CPT),
which offers off-campus work (full or part-time, paid or unpaid). Students are supervised and can earn
credit in their major towards their degree.
Matriculated students that complete a bachelor’s or master’s degree are eligible for one year of Optional
Practical Training (OPT) in their field. Its purpose is to provide an opportunity to gain employment
experience in a student’s field of study.
Student Story
Any summer, you might find
Professor Jo Williams analyzing
event management at Wimbledon
or networking with ESPN executives.
Professor Williams, chair of the USM
Sport Management program, brings
decades of firsthand experience in
the sport industry to her classroom.
Whether as tournament director
for the McCall’s LPGA Classic or a
consultant for the U.S. Field Hockey
Association, she continues to find
new ways to grow and shape the
sport industry.
The London Olympics provided firsthand
learning (and fun) for USM students.
Professors Jo Williams and Heidi Parker joined
20 undergraduate and graduate students for
the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of attending
London’s Olympic Games as part of the study
abroad course “London 2012: Management,
Marketing, and the Cultural Olympics.”
As a marketing major, Cody Seguin was eager for hands-on learning opportunities. When his advisor,
Professor Jeanne Munger, called him about the Honda CR-Z Media Challenge, he quickly signed up.
In just three weeks, Cody and his team submitted their “Love. Green. Fun. Challenge.” proposal for
promoting Honda’s new hybrid sports car using social media tools. They were selected as one of 10
competing teams in the country and immediately put their campaign into action, gaining invaluable
experience along the road.

English Language Bridge
(ELB) Program
The ELB program is an academic support program
offered through the University of Southern Maine’s English
for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Department.
Students participating in the USM ESOL are from over
30 different languages and countries. Students in the
ELB program are non-native English speakers who have
met USM’s admission requirements except that their
TOEFL scores fall below the required level.
All ELB students meet with an academic advisor to select
courses which offer key elements to aid in that student’s
academic success. Students in the ELB program take both
ESOL and regular classes during their first semester or year
at USM.
Once students have achieved English proficiency they
may declare their choice of degree program (refer to page
16 for details).
Undergraduate applicants who meet the appropriate
language* and academic requirements are eligible to apply
for Direct Entry to nearly 100 undergraduate programs
offered at USM.
Students who need supplemental English language support
will be considered for the English Language Bridge (ELB)*
Program offered by USM. All classes which ELB students
take are credit-bearing. Students take up to 12-13 credits.
The minimum required score is TOEFL iBT 49 or IELTS 5.0.
* The ELB program is only available for Undergraduate students. Graduate
students would need to meet the minimum entry requirements.

in the state of Maine to be selected in the new edition of the annual
guidebook “The Best 295 Business Schools: 2014 Edition.”
Students find the central role that Maine businesses play in the curriculum, the rigorous internship program and proactive career placement
office to be the school’s most distinguishing features. Recent student
internships have included placements within Boston Celtics, IDEXX, Kraft
Foods, Key Bank, L.L. Bean, Maine Medical Center Research Institute,
Prudential, TD Bank, and WEX.

From Classroom to Practice
We prepare you to take your classroom education into the
world as you embrace new opportunities in work and in life.
As a student at USM, you’ll have many opportunities to work in the field,
connecting what you learn in the classroom with real-world challenges. In fact,
internships are often central components of USM programs. Students work
within nonprofit organizations to put theory into practice; others find internships
in business throughout the region, from biotech firms to manufacturers to
financial services—experiences that often translate into future careers.
“My career as an economist with the Maine Department of
Labor’s Center for Workforce Research & Information (CWRI)
began with my University of Southern Maine Economics
degree. Many of the skills that I developed in my courses at
USM I’ve applied directly to our work at the CWRI. The skills
I learned as an undergraduate, including data organization
and presentation, statistical analysis, and the application of
economic theory to Maine’s labor markets, helped me
become a successful economist and build a nationally
recognized Labor Market Information Bureau.”
Chris Boudreau, Economics Major, Class of 2013

Physics Professor Julie Ziffer was
recently recognized by the International Astronomical Union for all her
work in Asteroid research, by having
Asteroid 7909 named after her.
Ziffer is studying and researching
asteroids in our Solar System,
focusing more on asteroids made
of ice rather than rock.
Distinguished Professor Mark
Lapping and colleagues in the
Muskie School of Public Service
received a $100,000 grant to
develop a strong, abundant, and
resilient food system strategy for
the state of Maine, positioning the
state as a center of food production
and innovation.
Dan Stasko, associate professor
of natural and applied science,
researches the properties of new
materials, particularly ion conductors
such as those found in fuel cells.
