We are a university large enough to provide the choices you’re looking for today—yet small enough to support your unique aspirations. Our three campuses are home to diverse academic communities where you can explore new ways to shape your future. Through internships, fieldwork and hands-on research, you’ll gain the skills and knowledge you need to succeed in tomorrow’s world. Welcome to the University of Southern Maine. OVERVIEW ACADEMICS FACULTY INTERNSHIPS CAMPUS LIFE ATHLETICS 3 CAMPUSES PROGRAMS USM’s three campuses are all different, yet they share the extensive resources of the university community…with plenty of Husky spirit to go around! Gorham is where today’s USM got its start. You’ll find historic brick buildings like Corthell Hall, dating back to 1878, mixed in with modern residence halls and classroom buildings, laboratories, studio spaces, the student center, field house and athletic fields, spread out on this beautiful, tree-lined campus. You’ll take classes here and on the Portland campus—an easy commute via the free USM shuttle bus. Lewiston campus Portland is Maine’s largest city, a dynamic creative community overlooking the islands of Casco Bay. You may commute regularly to Portland for classes or fieldwork, depending on your course of study. Our free shuttle makes it easy. Or you may gravitate there to take advantage of Portland’s shopping, restaurants, and entertainment––you won’t want to miss First Friday Art Walks. Lewiston-Auburn, “twin cities” perched on either side of the Androscoggin River, form a community known for its rich history and lively arts scene. The Lewiston-Auburn College campus fosters a supportive, close-knit college experience enhanced by cutting-edge classroom technology and full access to all the resources of USM. Portland campus USMCampuses usm Snapshot • R ecognized for several years running, including 2012, as one of the “Best in the Northeast” by The Princeton Review • Enrollment of 9,300 students • 40 states and 36 foreign countries are represented in the student body • More than 115 areas of undergraduate and graduate study • Student to faculty ratio––15:1 • Average class size––25 • NCAA Division III Athletics • Nationally recognized programs such as Honors, Russell Scholars, Pioneers, and other unique learning opportunities • 100-plus student organizations on campus • International study away opportunities • Campuses in central and southern Maine offer a range of educational, cultural, and recreational opportunities • Member of the University of Maine System usm.maine.edu USM is one of the best higher education values available in the Northeast. USM Overview usm.maine.edu OVERVIEW ACADEMICS FACULTY INTERNSHIPS CAMPUS LIFE ATHLETICS 3 CAMPUSES PROGRAMS If cost alone were the key measure of value, USM would be a great buy. But affordability, academic quality, range of undergraduate and graduate choices, and an unwavering commitment to your success all add up to make USM one of the best higher education values available in the Northeast region. 5 things that make USM an excellent value: Visit Us ➊ Affordability ➍ Reputation Tuition & Fees (based on 30 credit hours per year) Many of USM’s Schools and Colleges boast national accreditation by the nation’s most esteemed accrediting bodies. Our faculty are highly recognized in their fields and our students continue to win national and international awards in such areas as artificial intelligence, music, engineering, marketing, and toxicology—two of many reasons we’ve been named a “Best Northeastern College” by The Princeton Review several years running. Albany Boston Burlington Hartford Manchester New York City Providence Maine residents: $8,920 Out-of-state residents: $21,280 Room & Board: $9,820 (vary depending upon room and meal plan selected) Books & Supplies: $1,346 (vary depending upon area of study chosen) Financial Aid: More than 87% of USM’s first-time, full-time undergraduate students receive financial aid, with the average package of close to $10,000. ➋ Size With nearly 7,500 undergraduates, we’re “just right” by university standards. At USM, you’ll experience a mix of small classes, lectures, and seminars. And you’ll have opportunities to work with your professors both in and out of the classroom—on research and service-learning projects, for example. You’ll tackle big ideas and hatch innovative solutions as you get to know professors who are passionate about teaching. A few of our students’ favorite courses: Economics: White-Collar Crime The American Presidency Psychology and Politics Acting for the Camera Sex-related Differences in Communications Robot Intelligence Art History: Prehistoric through Medieval Field Studies and Environmental Geology in Lesvos, Greece Intro to Jazz Philosophy: Why Philosophize? Language, Mind, and Society “Numbers are like letters to me–it’s how my brain is wired. I have this great connection with my professors who teach us to understand math from a kid’s perspective. As a math teacher, I’ll need those different strategies.” Sonja Krakau ’13; Mathematics, Education Program 5 USM Academics For his EYE course, “Thoreau: Nature, Society, and Self,” history professor Adam Tuchinsky challenges students to create their own personal “Walden” by thinking, writing, and examining their lives and their relationships with nature. OVERVIEW ACADEMICS FACULTY INTERNSHIPS CAMPUS LIFE ATHLETICS 3 CAMPUSES PROGRAMS Some skills and knowledge are essential to your success in your career (and your life). That’s why we have the USM Core, designed to foster your competence in writing, critical thinking, and using quantitative information. At the heart of the USM Core is the Entry-Year Experience (EYE). These interdisciplinary thematic courses explore significant questions about human cultures and the natural world. Some sample EYE courses: Literature and Medicine • The Built Environment Life is a Matrix • Gender, Representation, and Resistance Shopping: American Consumerism • Nature-Nurture Sustainability, Culture, and the Environment • Globalization The Studio Experience • Getting Down to Business Musician’s Health • Thoreau: Nature, Society, and Self Culture, Identity, and Education • A World of Words Student Success Centers USM is focused on ensuring your success as a student. Each of our three campuses has a Student Success Center where you can get your questions answered and receive academic and career-planning assistance. 7 USM Faculty usm.maine.edu OVERVIEW ACADEMICS FACULTY INTERNSHIPS CAMPUS LIFE ATHLETICS 3 CAMPUSES PROGRAMS At USM, we believe experience makes the best teachers. That’s why so many of our professors come into the classroom armed with years of professional field experience. Thanks to their ongoing research, academic scholarship, and engagement in the wider community—both here and abroad—your professors will be outstanding teachers as well as supportive mentors. Any summer, you might find Professor Jo Williams analyzing event management at Wimbledon or networking with ESPN executives. Professor Williams, chair of the USM Sport Management program, brings decades of firsthand experience in the sport industry to her classroom. Whether as tournament director for the McCall’s LPGA Classic or a consultant for the U.S. Field Hockey Association, she continues to find new ways to grow and shape the sport industry. The London Olympics provided firsthand learning (and fun) for USM students. Professors Jo Williams and Heidi Parker joined 20 undergraduate and graduate students in the USM School of Business for the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of attending London’s Olympic Games as part of the study abroad course “London 2012: Management, Marketing, and the Cultural Olympics.” 9 USM Internships Biology major Cathy Wise ’13 was part of a research crew aboard the Odyssey, where she studied the impact of oil spills on whales in the Gulf of Mexico. Cathy successfully established the first whale cell line ever grown at sea, calling her internship “an amazing experience for an undergrad.” Here, on board the Odyssey, Cathy (left) looks at cultured whale cells with Alexandra Cousteau (right). OVERVIEW ACADEMICS FACULTY INTERNSHIPS CAMPUS LIFE ATHLETICS 3 CAMPUSES PROGRAMS As a student at USM, you’ll have many opportunities to work in the field, connecting what you learn in the classroom with real-world challenges. In fact, internships are often central components of USM programs. Leadership and Organizational Studies students work within nonprofit organizations to put theory into practice; Nursing students may participate in delivering community health care services on Maine islands; others find internships in businesses throughout the region, from biotech firms to manufacturers to financial services companies—experiences that often translate into future careers. Psychology major Tim Folley plans someday to start a teaching and rehabilitation facility built around a sustainable organic farm. His internship at the therapeutic riding center, Riding To The Top, has been “really huge in helping me realize my dreams.” 11 USM Internships Maine ranks among the country’s healthiest and safest states. Recent accolades for Greater Portland: “Best Adventure Town in the East” (Outside Magazine); “America’s Foodiest Small Town” (Bon Appetit); “America’s Most Livable City” (Forbes); and a top 50 place for “Business and Careers in the U.S.” (Forbes) OVERVIEW ACADEMICS FACULTY INTERNSHIPS The Southern and Central Maine regions are dynamic and diverse, known for their scenic beauty as well as their creative economies. Greater Portland, for example, is home to entrepreneurs in every field, from food to technology, sustainable energy to health care, engineering to the arts. CAMPUS LIFE ATHLETICS 3 CAMPUSES PROGRAMS And Lewiston-Auburn is well known for its thriving arts and cultural scene. As a USM student, you’ll find exciting internship opportunities within the region—and all over the world—where you can get a head start on your career or just try out ideas that intrigue you. Leigh Churchill, a student in the interdisciplinary Art and Entrepreneurial Studies program, interns with Associate Professor of Art Jan Piribeck on projects that combine art, technology, science, and geography. Recently, she helped Prof. Piribeck prepare for her onewoman show in Latvia and worked on inUNDATION, a “cultural cartography” campaign to raise awareness about global warming and rising sea levels. 13 USM Campus Life As leaders in the Somali Student Organization, Hassan Hassan ’11 and Mohammed Dini ’11 help forge strong ties between USM students and young Somalis in the Portland community. Recently Mohammed (right) was recognized for his pivotal role in promoting diversity on campus. OVERVIEW ACADEMICS FACULTY USM Clubs: Volunteer, Connect, Interact USM’s three campuses are home to more than a hundred different student organizations, clubs, and service groups — the perfect outlet for making friends and making a difference in the world. A few to investigate: Environmental Science Student Group • Salsa Club Scuba Club • American Sign Language Club Somali Student Organization • Psychology Club Model United Nations • Circle K Community Service USM Enactus Team • Partners in Rural Health Sport Management Club INTERNSHIPS CAMPUS LIFE ATHLETICS 3 CAMPUSES PROGRAMS Most USM undergraduates live and learn on our beautiful Gorham campus, enjoying all the advantages of a picturesque New England town. On campus are seven residence halls, which house our Living Learning Communities, including the nationally recognized Russell Scholars Program and the Pioneers Program. Classrooms, the library, athletic fields and sports facilities, the student center, studios, labs, theaters…all are easily accessible on this close-knit residential campus. From reducing ocean pollution to supporting financial literacy to fighting hunger in Maine, 170 students on the USM Enactus Team completed 22 community projects. Housed in the School of Business and part of the international Enactus network, the team was honored at the Enactus National Exhibition for cleaning up Portland’s Back Bay in its Call to Reduce Ocean Pollution project. 15 USM Campus Life usm.maine.edu OVERVIEW ACADEMICS USM Living Learning Communities In addition to the Russell Scholars Program in Woodward Hall and the USM Honors Program based on the Portland campus, there are a number of themed Living Learning Communities, including: • Students entering Nursing, Science, and Engineering • International • Community of Arts • Pioneers* • First-Year Integration FACULTY INTERNSHIPS CAMPUS LIFE ATHLETICS 3 CAMPUSES PROGRAMS Let’s say you arrive on campus with a passion for science or the arts. Want to live with other students who share your interest? You can do that. Our seven residence halls on the Gorham campus provide opportunities to live with others who are into music, outdoor adventure, fitness, and a variety of other academic and special interests. You’ll be part of a built-in community of peers, faculty, and staff who join together for social, recreational, and educational activities. • Fitness/Wellness • Adventure • Substance-Free Lifestyle • Rainbow Floor • 24-Hour Quiet Floor • Gender-Neutral Housing * P ioneers is a specialized honors program for students planning to study science, technology, engineering, or math. Jazz musicians Gideon and Jacob Forbes ’14 like the “two-second walk to the music department in Corthell Hall” from their rooms in the Community of Arts (COA) Living Learning Community in Robie Andrews. They describe the COA as “a good mix of art, music and theater majors—people who become your closest friends.” 17 USM Athletics usm.maine.edu OVERVIEW ACADEMICS FACULTY INTERNSHIPS CAMPUS LIFE ATHLETICS 3 CAMPUSES PROGRAMS Division III Sports Men’s teams: • Baseball • Basketball • Cross-Country • Ice Hockey • Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field • Lacrosse • Soccer • Tennis • Wrestling Women’s teams: • Basketball • Cross-Country • Field Hockey • Ice Hockey • Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field • Lacrosse • Soccer • Softball • Tennis • Volleyball Co-Ed teams: • Cheerleading • Golf Whether you play on a varsity team, participate in a club sport or cheer USM athletes from the sidelines, you’ll be proud to be a Husky. USM’s intercollegiate teams compete in the Little East Conference, one of the most competitive NCAA Division III conferences in the nation. Every year, several USM teams achieve national ranking and qualify for postseason play. You can also stay active—and cultivate friends—by participating in intramural and club sports like cycling, dance team, and sailing.
