WEEKEND @ WAIKATO
TODAY’S MEDIA GUESTS WITH SAVABEEL
A VISIT FROM THE MEDIA
Waikato Stud enjoyed a visit from an array of media today.
Brought out by New Zealand Thoroughbred Marketing, the Australian group consisted of Brent Zerafa (TVN, Daily Telegraph),
Mick Sharkie (Freelance Analyst) Tara Madgwick (Beeednet), Andrew Hawkins (Freelance Journalist) Stephen Moran (Best
Bets) and Angus Roland (Sky Racing).
Complemented by New Zealand’s Trackside personalities Jayne Ivil and Steve Davis and by photographer Trish Dunell, the group
took in O'Reilly’s date with Glam Slam and that of Pins with Suva, before a whistle stop tour of the stud and trip over to Game
Gully.
Whilst there, Brent Zerafa proved himself quite the gun eye, winning the “2012 Press Cup” with a superb Claybird shooting display
of five from six.
Jayne Ivil’s skills behind the barrel also caught the eye, enabling for her the ‘Shot of the Day’ prize.

STABLE PET BACK IN WINNERS CIRCLE
Peter, Kim and Jacob McKay’s much loved stable pet Joey Massino capped a remarkable return to the winners’ circle at Tauranga
last weekend.
The 6YO O'Reilly gelding had been off the scene since a
successful three-year-old campaign that was cut short by injury.
He underwent surgery to remove a bone chip and then suffered a
tendon injury. He finally returned to racing at Ellerslie earlier this
month where he finished a luckless eighth after being denied a
run in the closing 200 metres.
“He’s like the stable pet, so to get him back winning after nearly
three years away, has been huge for us,” said Jacob McKay, who
trains the son of O’Reilly in partnership with his father Peter. “He’s
pretty special for the family and it’s great to see he’s come through
the race 100%.
“He’s always been a lovely horse. In fact, he’s the horse I learnt to
ride on and he was only a 2YO at the time,” said Jacob, pictured
right riding Joey Massino this morning.
Owned by Peter and Kim, along with Trevor Luke, Joey Massino won the Gr.2 Waikato Guineas and the Gr.3 Wellington Stakes
in his classic year, and was a $140,000 yearling purchase out of WS’s 2008 Premier Sale draft.
Bred by Waikato Stud, Joey Massino is out of the Housebuster mare Rationable. She has been an outstanding producer and is
also the dam of the Gr.2 Makybe Diva Stakes winner and Gr.1 Caulfield Cup placegetter Vigor (O’Reilly) and the inaugural
Karaka Million and multiple Listed winner Vincent Mangano (No Excuse Needed).

MATING OF THE WEEK: Flying Monty
th
On Saturday August the 14 , the outlook for Peter Moody’s well related Montjeu broodmare Flying Monty looked bleak.
The three-time winning half-sister to Gr.1 New Zealand Derby winner Hades had endured a nasty dogsitter foaling, leaving her with
serious sciatic nerve paralysis.
With Waikato Stud’s Vet Fauna Smith keenly aware of the need to keep her lifted but easily mobile, and after having designed a
suitable sling, Mark Chittick rang J Swap Contractors to see if they had anything that might help keep her elevated.
Within a remarkably quick 30 minute period, Swap’s had their man Rob Couchman manoeuvring his hiab into position at the stud.
The combination of this act and a massive effort from staff - which saw them up with her all night and all of the next day, certainly
changed Flying Monty’s fate.
Flying Monty is nowadays a picture of health and was served by Savabeel three days ago.

GLORIOUS BOOST FOR RIOS
Glorious Days provided Waikato Stud’s handsome Hussonet sire Rios with a boost following his win in
last Sunday’s HK-2 HKJC Jockey Club Mile.
Being by Hussonet and out of a Centaine mare, Glorious Days is a ¾ in blood to Rios.
The win hightlights a run of feature wins by progeny of Hussonet lately.
One day prior to his Hong Kong success, son Tatra won the Gr.2 Sandown Guineas. Earlier in the
month, daughter Walk With Attitude took out the Listed VRC Lexus Hybrid Plate (1400m).
In Australia, Hussonet is the sire of 68.5% winners-to-runners and of 5.42% stakes winners-to- runners.
In New Zealand, his corresponding stats are 70.5% & 17.6%, and up in Hong Kong, they reveal
themselves to be 75% and 8.3%.
FOAL OF THE WEEK: Lodore Mystic
Lodore Mystic (Centaine) delivered a full brother to the four time Gr.1 winner and now
promising stallion Alamosa this week.
To date Lodore Mystic has produced six to race for the four winners Alamosa (O'Reilly),
Sacramento (No Excuse Needed), Robbers Roost (Pins) and Sprintcar (Danasinga)
A sister to Alamosa and this little fella will be heading to the 2013 NZB Premier Yearling
Sale.
READY TO RUN RESULTS
O'Reilly emerged on top as the leading NZ-based sire by average at this week’s NZB Ready To Run Sale of 2YO’s.
Highlighted by a $300,000 colt ex Star Affair who sold from Bradbury Park to Australian Bloodstock, O'Reilly achieved an average
of $136,389 for his 9 sold.
Demonstrating his considerable value, barnmate No Excuse Needed was also strongly received at the sale. His 7 progeny sold
averaged $61,429 – a figure over 10 times his current service fee ($6000).
MARK’S MAIL
With 75 mares served over the last 7 days, its fair to say I’m exhausted.
We had a great bunch of media at the stud today. Well done to NZTM for bringing such a good bunch
over and congrats to Brent Zerafa - five out of six claybirds is a big effort.
Right Tip of the Week…I like the look of the Savabeel mare Lady Kipling in the Gr.2 Auckland
Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes at Pukekohe Sat. She won her last start for the Baker/Forsman
training duo and is one from one at the track.
Tip of the Week: LADY KIPLING – Sat – Gr.2 Auckland TB Breeders’ S - Pukekohe – Race 6 – 3:46pm
