Greetings and Happy New Year!
Please take a moment to read through this month’s issue of the CAF Red Tail Squadron newsletter to see our mission in action. From a high school student in Ohio to
a Rocket Boy in Virginia, the RISE ABOVE Red Tail message of the Tuskegee Airmen
continues to touch lives, no matter the age. And a special thanks to our friend and
celebrity air show announcer Rob Reider, who received an honor from the Squadron
recently. Check out the picture of his expression in this issue. Yes, our P-51C Mustang
has been known to tug at the heartstrings!
Inspiring for higher!

As we’ve been able to increase the reach of RISE ABOVE Red Tail and its important
message, our visibility as a major player of the CAF has grown as well. Coupled with
our amazing donors and supporters, each year our important work educating audiences everywhere about the Tuskegee Airmen grows as well. What started out as a very
humble beginning in a hangar in Minnesota is now a CAF hallmark, and has inspired
countless people of all ages to RISE ABOVE. We are in a continual state of gratitude to
the donors that make this important work possible. Please know that every gift helps,
and we will continue to use these resources conservatively and judiciously as we deliver this valuable message across the country.

Last month, our team attended the International Council of Air Shows (ICAS) annual
conference. Not only do we participate in this important industry event to secure our
presence at key air shows in the ’16 and ’17 seasons, we are also proud to be a key
influencer in this arena. Our presence at ICAS has strengthened over the years as our
RISE ABOVE Red Tail outreach program has evolved, raising the bar and acting as a
benchmark in the industry. Members of our team represented the Squadron on industry expert panels to sharing best practices, as well as participated in several important
seminars to enhance our operations excellence, continue improvement and enhance
safety. And we sponsored a WWII-style photo booth that was a HIT, to say the least!
ICAS was great opportunity to share knowledge and a little fun with some fantastic old
and new friends.

MUSTANG MAINTENANCE UPDATE
Photos courtesy Tye J. Halvas, AirCorps Aviation
Winter maintenance on our P-51C Mustang is complete! As soon as the
weather breaks in Bemidji, Minnesota, the airplane will be ready for its
test flight. Then it’s off to Dallas to start our 2016 season of events that
will take us all across the country.
CAF Pilot, Doug Rozendaal
After last year’s numerous maintenance issues, this most recent round
was fairly benign. We had an electric boost pump that had started to
seep at the end of last season and a recurring intermittent radio issue
that had been dogging us for several years. The left boost pump was
replaced and before we could even fly the airplane the right one began
leaking, so we replaced it as well.
During the engine inspection a small crack was discovered in one of the cam towers. It was not in a critical area,
and most likely had been there since the last assembly, but it was the only unexpected engine issue and was replaced.
Our radio issue has been a real frustration for some time and we really dug deep, but we believe we found some
damaged wires that were causing the problem. We won’t know for sure until it has been out on the circuit for a
while, so our fingers are crossed that this nagging problem is resolved.
The team at AirCorps Aviation has done some great work and we look forward to another trouble-free season out
telling the important story of the Tuskegee Airmen! Rise Above!

CHIP IN TO PAINT THE P-51!
Our Mustang has seen its chips.
This fine piece of machinery, a symbol of
American air power in WWII, could be
relegated to the history books – or the airplane bone yard – but we have kept our P51C Mustang Tuskegee Airmen airworthy
for almost 15 years. 15 years of sheer grit
and determination! And we’ve been able
to do it because of the support of people
like you who truly care about keeping this
symbol of the history and legacy of the
Tuskegee Airmen alive for generations to
come.
Our “museum without walls” does not magically keep in tiptop shape. It takes countless volunteer hours and your
pledges to keep aloft safely. It’s a beauty not only in the air, but for every person who gets to see the Mustang up
close and in person on static display, well, that’s one more person who will most likely walk away being inspired by
the Tuskegee Airmen and their extraordinary life lessons.
And did you know that we’ve been through not one, but TWO major restorations? The aircraft was rescued once and
made airworthy, and after a tragic accident in 2004, our team of dedicated warbird maintenance technicians and
supporters like you took on the three-year restoration project again. The CAF Red Tail Squadron has had the opportunity to live out our Six Guiding Principals in this experience…. and we certainly NEVER QUIT.
To keep the Mustang in the best condition, especially for our cross-country mission that brings us in front of hundreds of thousands of new people each year, it is time to update the paint for the aircraft. The 110 hours the plane
has logged this year alone has certainly added to the wear and tear, and the Tuskegee Airmen deserves to look it’s
best as we bring our inspirational RISE ABOVE message to audiences across the country in the 2016 season.
Will you “chip in” to help us get the “chips out?”
We need to refresh our paint – especially our signature bright red tail – in order
to keep this fine aircraft show-ready. Fresh paint is key to maintaining the integrity of the plane’s body structure, in addition to keeping it looking as pristine
as possible. Just like a rust spot on an automobile can lead to greater internal
troubles, so can a few chips on the aircraft frame. Help us buff those chips out
and get our Mustang sleek and shiny once again.
Let’s rally together to ensure the continued longevity and airworthiness of this
inspirational aircraft. Keeping a warbird relic like the Tuskegee Airmen is not a
one-man show; it will take a community of dedicated supporters who believe in
our mission. With your help we can ensure the history and legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen is remembered for generations, and our P-51C Mustang is the vehicle
to make it happen!
If you send $51 or more, you will receive a personalized Rivet Certificate electronically
signed by an Original Tuskegee Airman and is a high quality print, suitable for framing.
Checks may be mailed to: CAF Red Tail Squadron

DID YOU KNOW?
17 January 1941: Yancey Williams, a civilian pilot who was a
senior at Howard University, filed suit in Washington, DC to
compel the War Department to consider his application for enlistment as a flying cadet in the Army Air Corps. He had applied
in November 1940, but had been told his application was being
held because no suitable units for “colored applicants” were
available yet to train him.
Make a one-time or recurring donation to help us to ensure the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen
is passed on to future generations, so that their strength of character, courage and ability to
triumph over adversity may serve as a means to inspire others to RISE ABOVE obstacles in their
own lives and achieve their goals!

OUR MISSION IN ACTION
Along with our mission to educate audiences across the country about the history and legacy of the Tuskegee
Airmen, the CAF Red Tail Squadron was founded on the objective to carry their important lessons into every
classroom in America. See how the message of the Tuskegee Airmen has left a strong impression on students
from around the country!
Michelle Nguyen, a high school student at Julia R. Masterman High School in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, wrote her National History Day paper about the
Tuskegee Airmen of WWII and shared it with us. Read her entire piece titled,
“The Tuskegee Airmen: Reaching New Heights” on our website.
Ohio student catches the ear of CAF Red Tail Squadron pilots
Ryan Miller, a high school sophomore in Powell, Ohio, recently contacted the CAF
Red Tail Squadron with a special invitation. Miller had been hard at work on a presentation for his English and history interdisciplinary class and was excited to share it
with one of our P-51C Mustang pilots.
He was tasked with a project looking at the realities of history vs. Hollywood, and to
pick a movie that has historical significance and compare the history of the movie to
Hollywood’s version of events. The movie of choice? Red Tails.
Miller’s special request was to have one of the Squadron’s P-51C pilots attend his final
presentation, as a gesture of honor to the Tuskegee Airmen and their legacy.
With all of his hard work, Miller learned a lot about the Tuskegee Airmen. “I believe the Airmen were some of
the bravest young men in the United States military,” he said. “They were thought of as inferior and suffered racism both on and off the battlefield. In the end they created a legacy for themselves, known as one of the most elite
fighter pilot groups in U.S. history.”
CAF Red Tail Squadron pilot Doug Rozendaal was quick to heed the call.
“I am happy to learn about your presentation, because I am sure that your have learned that, while the Red Tails
movie did a great job of raising the awareness of the Tuskegee Airmen, it’s story has little congruence with history,”
Rozendaal shared with the young learner. “I also applaud your teachers for their effort to cause young people such
as yourself to dig deeper into history and learn that everything they see from Hollywood is not necessarily accurate.
Further, much of our history is being glossed over in schools today and learning the lessons of the past is so much
easier than trying to learn them over again from experience.”
Although Rozendaal was not able to attend, pilot Paul Stojkov was able to make the trip. “We’re happy to report
that Ryan Miller got an A on his ‘Red Tails’ history project!” said Stojkov. “His teachers were very encouraging and
were impressed that our CAF Red Tail team offered so much support including a personal visit.”
Rozendaal reminds us, “The Airmen took an experiment that was designed to prove they could not do the job,
and turned it into an opportunity that allowed them to achieve their wildest dreams, and changed the world in the
process. They proved that anyone can ‘Rise Above’ adversity with hard work, discipline and focus. That is a great
lesson for all young people.”
Thank you Ryan for sharing the inspiring history and legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen with your classmates!

“ROCKET BOY” PLEDGES SUPPORT TO CAF RED TAIL SQUADRON
Jim O’Dell with “honorary Rocket Boy” Landau Eugene Murphy Jr. launching rockets at their
Rocket Boys Festival, held each October in Beckley, West Virginia
If you’ve seen the 1999 hit movie “October Sky” then you might be familiar with the Rocket Boys, the teenagers
from West Virginia who were able to change their destiny through science and determination. In 1957, after being
inspired by the launch of Sputnik, Homer Hickam, Jr. and his friends, against all odds, designed and built their
own rockets… and landed the highest prize at the National Science Fair AND college scholarships that lifted them
from a life of coal mining to the halls of NASA.
Jim O’Dell was one of the original Rocket Boys. After graduating high school, O’Dell enlisted in the Air Force,
and earned a degree at Colorado State University following his time in the service. He’s no stranger to overcoming
adversity; there were few opportunities for young men in the town he grew up in, and going to work in the mine
was tough work, and expected. With a passion for rocket science and the will to better his future, O’Dell and his
friends learned all they could about rocketry, eventually dazzling their hometown after having to convince everyone, maybe even themselves, that they had the brains to launch their homemade rockets thousands of feet in to the
air.
O’Dell reached out to the CAF Red Tail Squadron with his pledge of support for our mission and our majestic P51C Mustang. He knows that it’s a collective effort to keep our warbird safely in the air, and he wanted to support
our work, and our mission to honor the history and legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen. He’s belonged to our donor
ranks for some time now, but wanted to make a pledge specifically for the new paint the Mustang greatly needs.
Recently, O’Dell and his family visited the Tuskegee Airmen Monument in Walterboro, South Carolina. It marks
an important final training stop at the then Walterboro Army Airfield where the airmen received the final stages of
combat training before shipping off overseas.
“The memorial was beautiful, astounding,” said O’Dell. “I’ve been a donor to the CAF Red Tail Squadron for a long
time, and I know these important old planes are worth preserving. Seeing this memorial made me remember what
a brave group of men the Tuskegee Airmen were.”
Because O’Dell also served in the Air Force, he personally knows there is something special shared by the service’s
band of brothers. He credits the military for changing his life, and can empathize with how the brotherhood of the
Tuskegee Airmen changed not only their own lives, but set the stage for positive change for generations to come.
When asked if he would encourage other folks to support the CAF Red Tail Squadron? “Yes, God yes!” he answered emphatically. “That P-51 needs to keep flying. The Tuskegee Airmen are classic, and we need to continue
to support them and their legacy.”
O’Dell overcame the weight of his own adversity, and knows sharing the history of the Tuskegee Airmen can inspire others to do the same. “Don’t let an obstacle get in your way,” he said. “If you’ve got a fire in your gut, do it.
Whatever it is that you love, do it, no matter what.”
October Sky was adapted from the book Rocket Boys, a memoir written by Hickam and first published in 1998.
Both are sources of great inspiration and a timeless story of important life lessons. Like our Guiding Six Principles,
much can be achieved if you AIM HIGH and NEVER QUIT.
RISE ABOVE!
The Rocket Boys still work together to inspire people of all ages.
