Pastors Corner Feb. 7, 2016 Page 2 Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time The Call of the Lord If we look in the Bible at how different people were called by God we notice one similarity – those called by God felt unworthy. In our gospel today Peter responds to the call of Jesus with these words: “Depart from me Lord, for I am a sinful man.” In the first reading Isaiah said: “Woe is me, I am doomed! For I am a man of unclean lips.” In the second reading Paul said: “I am the least of the apostles, not fit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the Church of God.” Looking further, when Moses was called by God he felt unworthy and responded: “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and lead the Israelites out of Egypt?” (Exodus 3:12). When God called Jeremiah he replied: “Ah, Lord God. I know not how to speak; I am too young” (Jeremiah 1:6). By God’s favor each of us has been called. Through our baptism we are called to live as children of the light. Although you may not feel worthy, your feelings put you in good company. Like the Biblical people Peter, Isaiah, Paul, Moses and Jeremiah, you are called and chosen by God. You must have faith in God. You are each called in some particular way to live your faith and to share the “Good News” with others. This Wednesday we begin the season of Lent, a season for personal renewal and growth. Perhaps we can look at how God has called us and chosen us for some particular work. In this Year of Mercy, maybe we can place greater attention on extending mercy toward others. May the days of Lent be used to renew our faith, grow in our spiritual life and affirm the call of the Lord. Please, live a life worthy of God’s calling. Peace. Fr. Tom Ash Wednesday Schedule– Masses 7am, 9am, 12pm, 4pm (ashes service only), 5:30pm, 7:30pm (Spanish) World Marriage Day– Today is World Marriage Day. Let us remember to pray for all married couples, especially that their lives reflect the love and presence of God. Let us also pray that our great nation will safeguard the sanctity of marriage. Together In Mission – The mailing for the 2016 Together in Mission Campaign has begun. This Campaign assists needy parishes and schools in our Archdiocese (37 parishes and 56 Catholic schools). These funds help maintain a meaningful Catholic presence in some of the most impoverished areas of our Archdiocese. Thank you. Paz. P. Tomás. Miércoles De Ceniza Horarios — En español: 5pm; 6pm; 7pm. & 8pm. En el salón Kennedy. In the Spotlight Doors of Mercy Egren Gomez—Pastoral Intern On Christmas Eve we inaugurated an outdoor Art Installation displayed on the desert scape- the grounds of our new Church. It transformed the barren desert scape into a sanctuary for prayer for all people. The focal point is the large red doors; it is an Interactive art piece, entitled: "The Doors of Mercy are Open" Come and Encounter the Love and Mercy of Jesus The Installation is grounded in the theological and spiritual mystery of the Incarnation. In other words, God who loves us immensely desires to have a profound and personal encounter with us. He became a human to be with us in a personal way. The two large red doors symbolize the Heart of Christ. Notice that they are displayed in an open position, which mirror the open arms of the Sacred Heart Statue. This open position depicts how in Jesus the gates of heaven open to lavish us with divine love. This is the gift of Christ to His creation. The doors of His heart are always open. He invites us to walk through these doors and to encounter His infinite, lavish, and abundant love and mercy. Suggested Prayer Experience: Everyone is invited to do a pilgrimage and to go on a journey down the pathway and to walk through the Doors of Mercy! When you reach the Sacred Heart Statue you are invited to place your hands on the Sacred Heart Statue and ask Him in prayer, to fill you with His Love and Mercy. When you do so you will notice that you will feel a strong sense to share this with your friends and family. God's love and mercy is contagious and it moves us to share this with others. Be merciful and share His Love and Mercy as a gift to those around you! Our Parish Family Page 6 Free Daily Lent Reflections Word on Fire Would you like a deeper, more powerful Lent this year?
