First Sunday in Lent
The Doors of Mercy and Lent
Out on our church property where the new church will be built are two large red
doors. These doors represent the Doors of Mercy, and are red for the Sacred Heart
Doors of Mercy. Throughout this Year of Mercy I pray we use these doors to remind us to be agents of God's mercy. These doors were put up and first used at our
Christmas celebrations. After Mass there were processions which went through
these doors to a nativity scene, where parishioners adored the baby Jesus. The nativity scene has been removed and we have placed a cross in the same location for
the Lent and Easter seasons. We continue to adore the Lord Jesus when we extend
his mercy to others, the deserving and undeserving. We likewise carry the victory
of the cross to a hurting world when we share the unconditional mercy of our God.
Let's be people of mercy. Let's walk often through these doors, touching the statue
of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and pray that we can all become more affective instruments of mercy. God leads us though such
doors of mercy by the life, death and resurrection of his Son.
In today‘s gospel reading we hear of Jesus‘ temptation in the desert. Like Jesus, any time we attempt to draw closer to
God we will face temptation from the devil. Lent is a time to draw closer to God so it may also be a time of added temptation. Let us build strength through prayer, fasting and almsgiving. These assist us in facing temptations. Let us reflect on
the simple Church environment and not complicate our lives with distractions that lead us away from God. Let us journey
through the Doors of Mercy to remind us of our call to extend God‘s love and mercy. If we are able to cling to Jesus and overcome many of the devil‘s temptations, we will celebrate Easter resurrection with added strength for our journey of faith. Be
faithful and be diligent. Peace. Fr. Tom
Spanish Lenten Mission: Monday –Wednesday, February 22-24 at 7pm in the Church. Fr. Supanchek will be speaking on
―How to Encounter God and know him better‖ and ―The Sacraments: Source of our Encounter with God‖. There will be a
concluding healing Mass on Wednesday, Feb. 24. This mission will be in Spanish.
Sean fieles y sean diligentes. Paz. P.
Tomás.

In the Spotlight
Pilgrimage Churches for the Jubilee Year of Mercy
The sign of the Holy Door, so outstanding a sign of the Jubilee of 2000, "evokes the passage from sin to grace which
every Christian is called to accomplish. Jesus said: ‗I am the door‘ (Jn 10:7), in order to make it clear that no one can come to
the Father except through him. This designation which Jesus applies to himself testifies to the fact that he alone is the Savior
sent by the Father. There is only one way that opens wide the entrance into the life of communion with God: this is Jesus,
the one and absolute way to salvation. To him alone can the words of the Psalmist be applied in full truth: ‗This is the door of
the Lord where the just may enter‘ (Ps 118:20)…. The opening of the holy doors in Rome and around the world will be a symbol of how Jesus is opening the door of his heart. Below are a list of designated pilgrimage Churches within the Archdiocese
of Los Angeles.

A Jubilee Prayer
for Mercy
Loving GodHelp us live out in our daily lives the
mercy which you constantly extend to all
of us. As you cast open the doors of your
heart to us may we respond with urgency
to proclaim your mercy to others. May
we always be credible witnesses to mercy, professing it and living it as the core
of the revelation of Jesus Christ. May we
never tire of extending mercy and be ever
patient in offering compassion and comfort. May we become the voice of every
man and woman and repeat confidently
without end; ―Be mindful of your mercy,
O Lord, and your steadfast love, for they
have been from of old‖ (Ps 25:6). Amen.

Vocations Corner:
Discernment Tips
Begin not by asking, but by knowing
God. Before asking God what He wants
you to do with your life, you need to
know God personally. You come to
know God through regular participation
in Mass and Confession, time spent reading and reflecting on Scripture, time
spent in personal prayer, and service offered within the context of the Church.
As you grow in your relationship with
God, you also grow in your ability to understand His will for you.
