ANNUAL REPORT 2015
GAME READY FOR LIFE
A M E S S A G E F R O M O U R P R E S I D E N T/ C E O :
Rather than write about some of our past year’s accomplishments, I would
much rather look toward the future. Each year Snider Hockey continues to evolve. The launch of our new Game
Ready for Life! initiative builds our capacity while raising our educational goals
from high school graduation to achieving post-secondary success – truly
preparing our students to become GAME READY FOR LIFE! By continuing to retain, mentor, and track our students after they graduate
from high school and throughout their post-secondary programs, we will grow
our enrollment and deepen the impact that we have on our students, as well as
enlarge our staff to meet the needs of our expanded deliverables. Moreover,
many of our new hires will be graduates of our programs.
A new partnership with the Give Something Back Foundation will allow us to
provide our eligible students with full post-secondary scholarships (tuition,
plus room and board) to one of an ever-growing list of partner institutions,
which currently includes: Montclair State University, Philadelphia University,
Rowan University, The Community College of Philadelphia, The College
of New Jersey, University of Delaware, Temple University, West Chester
University, and Williamson School of the Mechanical Trades. Our deserving alumni of Snider Hockey will not only be able to graduate from
their post-secondary programs equipped with the educational and vocational
training to prepare them to enter the workforce, but they will be free of debt
on a smooth pathway to becoming productive citizens in our society. It’s easy
to see why programs like Game Ready for Life! reinforce Ed’s wish that Snider
Hockey will be his legacy.

OUR MISSION
To Build Lives and Unite Communities
HOW WE DO IT
Snider Hockey is a cutting edge program that uses the sport of
ice hockey coupled with a rigorous off-ice Life Skills curriculum
and supplemental educational services to build character
and academic skills for under-resourced boys and girls from
Philadelphia and Camden. Hockey is simply the hook that is
used to gain and hold the attention of our students, so that we
may keep them fully engaged in activities that strengthen their
physical, academic and emotional development.

Education Enrichment Programming expanded dramatically this past season
with the introduction of several new initiatives. Services such as Required
Tutoring, Homework Help, Reading Buddies, College & Career Corners, Academic
Enrichment Activities, and Life Skills are available to Snider Hockey students.
These innovative programs are designed to complement in-school lessons,
while promoting a lifelong enjoyment of reading, critical thinking, and group
communication.
Snider Hockey uses report cards to track a number of “Early Warning Indicators”
such as attendance/tardiness, behavior, and performance in core classes. This
provides empirical evidence that helps us evaluate and measure the overall success
of our programs.
HOCKEY IS THE HOOK
Hockey is a team sport, which is
competitive and collaborative at the same
time. The greatest outcomes result from
player interaction. In addition, hockey
requires competitive participants to
always be accountable to their teammates
for their individual actions. Players must
be strong and confident individuals, but
also good teammates and citizens.
Hockey promotes a responsible form
of tenacity, which can be instrumental
to kids throughout their personal and
professional development. And, as Snider
Hockey continues its journey to serve
the deserving young people in urban
communities, it is clear that our programs
are making a positive difference in the
lives of thousands of children and the
communities in which they live.

The academic and athletic skills that
our young people acquire are much
more valuable when coupled with the
life lessons necessary to be successful
students, athletes, and citizens. Snider
Hockey’s Life Skills curriculum focuses
on helping students build the capacity to
understand themselves and others. The
net result is young people who learn to
make healthy choices, remain strong, and
even thrive in the face of challenges.
It is Snider Hockey’s goal to continue to
facilitate nutrition education at our rinks,
in an effort to help our students develop
healthy habits, both on and off the ice. All
programming offered by Snider Hockey is
fact-based and highlights many national
nutritional guidelines. Each lesson
teaches key messages and behavior goals
that are delivered in the form of group
discussion, hands-on learning activities,
and recipe making.

EVERY CHILD NEEDS A ROLE MODEL
Snider Hockey’s staff models the behavior and expectations that
are part of the Snider Hockey experience; warm, fun, encouraging,
and safe. Our coaches and academic aides are positive role models
committed to each child’s growth and development and inspire young
people to be their best selves. Consistent mentoring between coaches
and students helps to instill confidence and positive self-esteem in
our youth.
Snider Hockey serves as a bridge between our students, families, and
their multiple worlds - trusting that through their commitment to our
programs, they will receive much-needed support and information
that will help them navigate through school and community life. In
turn, school professionals know that they can turn to Snider Hockey
to help reach families. They see our rinks as hubs for learning and
growth – truly working to unite these communities.

GAME READY FOR LIFE
Introduced in Fall 2015, Game Ready for Life!
creates a post-secondary education culture
for Snider Hockey students from the time
they enter sixth grade until the time they
enter the workforce.
PHASE ONE: MIDDLE SCHOOL
Middle school students engage in tutoring
services and academic counseling sessions
offered before or after hockey lessons.
These sessions prepare students to develop
a regular routine for homework help and
to keep in compliance with matriculation
requirements. Students are armed with tips
and strategies on time-management and
organizational and study skills needed to
succeed in high school. Students are also
counseled on selecting a high school that
will best fit their personal needs.
9
PHASE TWO: HIGH SCHOOL
Routine homework help and tutoring
continues once a Snider Hockey student
enters high school. An assigned academic
aide also helps identify career interests;
categorizes post-secondary programs that
best match students’ needs and interests;
chronicles extra-curricular activities and
course requirements; and centralizes
all information for college applications,
scholarships, and financial aid. These
sessions take place during the Game Ready!
College Corner throughout the week and
during campus visits to local colleges and
universities.
PHASE THREE: POST-SECONDARY PURSUITS
A partnership has been forged with the
Give Something Back Foundation that will
grant all eligible Snider Hockey graduates
with full scholarships (tuition, room, and
board) allowing them to complete postsecondary programs free of debt. Students
are required to complete check-in meetings
and mentoring sessions that focus on: costbenefit analyses of post-secondary options,
determining degree plans, scholarship/
grant research and application process,
FAFSA assistance and budget planning, selfadvocacy, internship research, interview
skill building, and the importance of seeking
support and establishing relationships on
campus or in the workforce.

ED’S LEGACY
Mr. Snider was an icon – the father of
the Philadelphia Flyers hockey club, an
entrepreneur, a philanthropist, a risktaker and a true visionary in the sports
and entertainment industry. He was
widely respected and admired for his
passion, his vision, and his leadership,
not only on the ice, but in the game of
life as well.
One of Ed Snider’s proudest
accomplishments was the creation of
the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation
in 2005. “This is how I want people to
remember me... this is what I want to be
my legacy. What we’re doing for kids.
I’m more proud of this than anything
else I’ve done in my life.”
