Welcome to the Summer edition of Wildern News, The end of another full and busy year where again there have been some significant changes in education. We have new curricular for most subjects and a new assessment model rolling through from the government, matched by our own new Wildern Steps which began in earnest with Year 7 this year. Thank you to all the parents who attended the training session on this and indeed to those of you who have given positive and constructive feedback as we move forward. From September we will be launching our new attitude grades. These have been created based on consultation with staff and students and will apply to all year groups across the school. As many of you will be aware, a number of our parents faced a difficult situation when their Year 6 children were not allocated a place at Wildern for September. After some discussion with Wildern Governors and Hampshire County Council we were able to arrive at a solution, which will apply for the next three years. We are committed to our community and would want to accommodate as many of our in-catchment children as possible and have therefore been provided with some additional accommodation to support a change to our intake. Thank you to all those parents who completed the satisfaction survey. The feedback, which is handled externally and uses national comparatives was, as usual, very positive. We have already responded to some of the written feedback. One example is the extending of the opening hours for reception, which will now operate until 4.00pm Monday to Thursday. We had already extended it the other way, opening earlier, but following parental comments we have now increased the end of the day as well. We continue to explore our communication methods, especially using email, but in order for this to be effective we need all parents’ email addresses . Can I urge you next year to confirm that we have these, so that we can move closer to a more formal communication method using email. As many of you will be aware, we have begun to focus on punctuality, to which the majority of students are responding very well. My sincere thanks for the positive response we have had from many parents who fully appreciate the need for students to arrive to school on time. All schools across the county have been given very clear guidance and expectations regarding attendance and punctuality, so thank you again for your support. As I write this, I am an hour away from going to the Year 11 Leavers Assembly where, for the last time, I will address them and bid them farewell. They have been superb throughout their time with us and they have conducted themselves with total commitment throughout the recent exam period. As we move towards the end of the year and prepare for September, I am pleased to report that we are fully staffed for the new academic year, having recruited some new colleagues, welcomed back a few from before and trained some of our own in our teacher training SCITT. Thank you, as always, for your unfailing support. Our job is most definitely one of the best in the world, made better by the lovely people that we have the pleasure of working with, including particularly our parents, but perhaps most importantly, our students who are a delight. 4 4 M.L.Litton k c o m On Thursday 7th May, the VOX and RRR Focus Groups worked alongside Mrs Burden and Miss Skinner to organise the school’s Mock Election. In the run up to the event, we created a WOW of the week which focussed on the importance of voting for policies not personalities. We also spent the weeks leading up to the event campaigning in the piazza during break and lunch time. All students had a CSI and PL lesson on this topic where they could browse through and discuss the manifestos. During the day, 1800 students and staff came to vote at our polling station. The day was such a success, that even a member of the public tried to vote with us! After an hour of counting we found the exit polls to be correct… The Conservatives had won! So to conclude, Wildern School had the same opinion as the public of wanting another 5 years of David Cameron! ERIN SELLARS & SAMUEL ADAMS 5 CHINA When we got to Beijing we experienced the more cultural side to China as we went to The Forbidden City, Summer Palace, Temple of Heaven and The Ming Tombs. On the last day we went to Beijing Zoo where we got to see the pandas and other amazing animals before having one last Chinese meal at a restaurant. But no trip to China would be complete without a visit to the Great Wall! We visited the Juyongguan section and found out exactly how steep it really is. (The teachers were not kidding when they warned us before the visit!) The trip was full of amazing excursions which made for great photographs. We all made lots of friends on the trip and memories that will stay with us forever. It really was an experience of a lifetime. ERIN SELLARS On Saturday 4th April 48 Year 10 students and 6 staff travelled to Shanghai to take part in the Geography departments first ever China trip. This once in a lifetime visit lived up to all our expectations as we took in the amazing sites of Shanghai for 4 days then travelled by bullet train to Beijing. Whilst we were in Shanghai we went up the Oriental Pearl Tower which has an amazing glass floor 246m up in the sky! We had 2 great guides whose English names were Heidi and Iris and they took us on a river boat tour of the Bund district which is lit up by thousands of neon lights at night. We found out it costs £250,000 each night to keep the entire skyline lit! We also went on the Maglev which is the fastest train in the world and reaches a top speed of 431km per hour. It is magnetically levitated so it floats instead of having wheels. hen I first had the idea for a trip to China back in 2012 I didn't fully appreciate what a magical experience W it would be to take students to the other side of the world and see sights in total contrast to our lives in Southampton. The geography teachers & Mr Hastings want to thank 'Team China' for making a wonderful trip that bit more awesome. Our guide for the entire trip, Charlie, was so overwhelmed by the group that we had tears at the airport saying goodbye (and they were not just mine!), Team China - thanks for all the laughter, knowledge and sticky rice moments! MRS BROADRIBB 7 Meet Koyah......He is an 11yr old Sumatran Orang-utan from Indonesia. This year in 8P1 we adopted an Orang-utan. By adopting Koyah we are helping WWF to protect the future of orang-utans and to tackle some of the biggest environmental challenges facing their natural world today. Whilst we adopt Koyah, we get information leaflets every month telling us how Koyah is doing and little facts about Orang-utans. We first decided as a tutor group to adopt Koyah when we were learning about sustainability as part of Digging Deeper sessions. We adopted him around May and have carried on ever since. We hope to keep doing this and when we have left UKMT school perhaps the new 7P1 class can take it over! In this Prestigious National golf event held over 4 days George managed to score 70, 69, 73, 72 (par 72) finishing 4 under par overall joint 3rd for the U18s and 1st in the U16 category in the competition. George has now had his handicap cut to 1.1, Well done! PE NEWS Wildern Young Ambassadors help at the Hampshire Schools Games Wildern Young Ambassadors helped with the running of 3 competitions at this year’s Hampshire Schools Games in Aldershot on 19th June – Swimming, Athletics and Tri-Golf. Thanks to all involved, they were fantastic and helped to make the Level 3 Event a huge success. Inter House Rounders Competition Well done to all those students that took part in this year’s Inter House Rounders Competition. It was a really fun and enjoyable event. The results were as follows: 1st - Paxton 2nd - Driscoll / Jubilee (joint) 4th - Bedford 5th - Alba 6th - Sovereign Year 11 Football The year 11 Football Team successfully defended their Southampton Cup title, beating Testwood 2-0 in a thrilling final at Queens Keep FC – with goals from Matt Gabbot and Jason Moulder. A great way to end the season! Well done boys. See you all again next year! District Athletic Championships at Southampton Well done to all the Wildern pupils who took part in this year’s District Athletic Championships. Despite a very cold and wet start to the day Wildern produced some very pleasing performances. Wildern School Skiing Trip to Austria The weather conditions were perfect in Austria for this year’s school Ski Trip. All the students had a fantastic time – and produced skiing of a really high standard. Well done to all students and staff. See Mr Mooney if you are interested in going on next year’s trip! MR MOONEY 9 Early in the spring term Solent EBP and Sainsbury’s Hedge End ran a #vegart competition called ‘Pick it Make it Snap it’! This was a great chance for Wildern Year 8 Art Enrichment and Year 9 Photography students to get creative and design a piece of art using fruit and veg. Students were required to represent one of the following themes: Food Miles, Seasonal, Healthy Eating, Fair Trade, Sustainability. A team from Solent EBP visited Wildern art department and the students had great fun creating the displays. The Sainsbury’s shopping public were then asked to vote in store on their favourite entry, and here at Wildern the #vegart competition was run as a Voting Voice too. In class, we were challenged to create a photograph of fruit and vegetables. We had to mould different colours and different shapes to create something that would fulfil one of the designated themes. I decided to create a bumblebee out of peppers and onions. After making it, I took a photograph and entered it into the Veg Art competition. At the finals evening my photograph was awarded 3rd place which made me feel really proud. This means my photograph will now be used for some of Sainsbury’s fruit and veg displays. It was a great competition and was a lot of fun to create something with fruit and veg! SAM ADAMS 9P2 Painting by Aaron Limonard Wildern Art Department celebrated the outstanding achievements of its hardworking and talented students with a final exhibition in the D@rt. The standard was extremely high this year, following the dedication demonstrated by all, and not forgetting a 10 hour exam!! A handful of students were nominated by their art teacher for the Wildern Oscar 2015. A selection by Aaron Limonard, Lucy Mooney, Alex Blayley-Crewe, Abigail Wall and Kyra Gibson can be seen here. The Wildern Art staff would like to wish all our students the very best for their results day in August. MRS LYNCH & THE ART DEPARTMENT 10 Budding Gardener of the Year Thursday the 21st of May saw the culmination of 5 months hard work, planning and growing by the School Mud Club as they travelled to RHS Wisley to take part in the Annual Budding Gardener of the Year Competition. The theme for this year’s competition was “Wonderland” and it was judged by experts who had come straight from judging at the Chelsea Flower Show! Mud Club’s garden was a deconstruction of the Mad Hatter’s tea party in Alice in Wonderland; not only did their design incorporate up-cycled elephants, giant mushrooms and a caterpillar, but it also reflected some of the history of our school site in strawberry production. Unusual items such as a top hat & tea cup were repurposed as planters & plant species were carefully selected to provide food for native pollinators. Bamboo habitats were also developed to encourage some of these to take up permanent residence! Jake Cooper, Ben Pitter, Vicki Clarke, Lizzy Smith, Emily Murrey, Alex Bull and Alfie Nicholls The students took great care and pride in constructing their garden on the day and were justly rewarded with a Gold Certificate – very well done! MS SEALEY Wa t e r f o r L i f e Over 4,000 children die each day from contaminated water. Yet just £10 can give one person clean water for life. So we decided to try to make a difference. Wildern Water Week was a joint initiative with Fresh2o and supported by Peter Cooper Volkswagen Group at the start of June. A week of events, projects and fund raising initiatives to raise awareness of the issues and importance of clean water and to do something about the problem. The highlight of the week was the Staff House Relay Race where teams had to compete with a partially full jerry-can of water on their heads! Sovereign pipped Paxton to take the win by just 0.61 seconds! Sovereign then took on a team from Fresh2o and Peter Cooper’s which included the Hampshire Cricket Club Mascot! We raised £1970.82 during the week through collection bottles, cake sales, events and challenges. Peter Cooper Volkswagen Group have generously pledged to match that amount and help us make even more of a difference. It’s not too late for you to make a donation, you can visit www.fresh2o.org/team and click on the Wildern School project. Wildern students provided music as people entered the venue and during the official changing of the robes and were complemented by members of the audience for their excellent performances. MRS THOMAS Photographs show Olivia Fisher, Poppy George, Bethany Mayers, Nicole Mo and Rory Staff at the Mayor Making ceremony. SUMMER Wildern’s annual Summer Concert took place on Wednesday 24th June to a sold-out audience in the Berry Theatre. The evening got off to an explosive start with a massed samba drumming performance led by David Trevithick involving plenty of audience participation! There were then performances from ensembles such as WAVE Choir, Concert Band and Jazz Band as well as solos, smaller group performances and numbers performed by the Staff Band and Staff Barbershop. The Wildern Creative and Media Department are currently working towards a production of Joseph and His Amazing Technicolored Dreamcoat and this was also represented on the night with Ellen Pit performing The Prologue followed by Samuel Rowe and members of the chorus performing ‘Any Dream Will Do’. CONCERT Year 8 students involved in the Music Enrichment project were very lucky this year to have worked on a project coordinated by the D@rt centre called Soundwaves. During this project the group worked with Southampton University students to create pieces of music inspired by the sounds that you would experience at the seaside. Students created initial musical ideas inspired by their visit to Hythe Marina and then worked with Composer Rebecca Withers on developing these short musical responses into a professional piece of music. At the Summer Concert we were very pleased to have the University of Southampton's Chamber Orchestra who performed the resulting composition. Overall students performed outstandingly, a fitting celebration of a year of hard work, rehearsal, dedication and regular individual practice! A special thank you goes to our Year 11 performers on the night. They have contributed so much to the musical life of Wildern over the years in a multitude of musical performances and watching their progress has been a particular pleasure. We wish them every success on the next stages of their journeys. MRS THOMAS Photograph of trombone soloist Morgan Taylor, 9B1 13 Italia! During the May half term 40 Year 10 History students visited Italy staying in Rome for 3 days and then travelling to Sorrento for the 2nd part of our stay. Whilst in Rome we took in the amazing sights of the Colosseum and listened to our guide explain how at one time the base was flooded so battles took place on boats for the spectators! We spent a day at the Vatican experiencing the beauty of the the Sistine Chapel as well as St Peter's Basilica. From Rome we traveled to Sorrento which was our base to explore Pompeii, Herculaneum and visit the beautiful island of Capri. Weather was lovely here with beautiful views from our hotel and gorgeous gelatos! We finished up by walking to the crater of Mt Vesuvius the dormant volcano and taking in the sites of the Bay of Naples below. It was an amazing trip and the students represented the school with pride. Thanks Team Italy! MRS BROADRIBB, MISS BATTEN, MRS BURDEN, MR MOTH & MR MERRETT 14 Wildern TV - Exchange visit to Silves Sul in The Algarve On 13th March 5 students and Mrs Broadribb visited Silves Sul a school in The Algarve to take part in their first school Oscars movie ceremony. Wildern is delighted to have established this exchange programme which was started in November 2013. In July 2014 we welcomed 6 students and 4 teachers over to take part in our annual Wildern TV Oscars and their school nominated 10 films for the 'Best International Film' category as judged by Miss Litton. This time it was our turn to enter films in their Oscars and Elizabeth Addis won 'Best International Film' for her movie called 'Dairy'. Antonia Manley also won an Oscar for her film called 'Supergirl' scooping the 'Best Promo' category. The exchange programme lasted 5 days during which we were treated to a surfing lesson, a visit to the Zoomarine Park where we watched a dolphin show as well as spending time at the beautiful beach and eating Peri-Peri chicken! We were all sad to leave on the last day as our hosts and their families had made us feel so welcome. We look forward to welcoming 6 Portuguese students to stay with students at Wildern this July and for more entries from Silves Sul for our WT Oscars on Monday 13th July. MRS BROADRIBB Fußball auf deutsch – A Year 8 language learning project In the second half of the Spring Term, a number of Year 8 students learning German opted to develop their language skills through the theme of football. During a sequence of classroom-based lessons, students learnt how to talk about many aspects of football including: positions / players’ qualities / Fifa player prices / football songs / on-field commands. A particular highlight was when students created the German commentary for a favourite goal using a Youtube clip. Throughout the unit of work, we were very fortunate to be assisted by George Kimber-Sweatman as part of the Southampton University Languages Ambassador scheme. George not only studies German but is also a qualified Level 4 football referee; perfect for the occasion. He soon became very used to the teenage cry of ‘Hey, Schiri!’ (‘Hey ref!’). Finally, on Friday 27th March, the two rival classes doing the football unit took to the Mugga to demonstrate their sporting and linguistic talents. On the touchline were cheerleaders with pompoms and supporters singing German refrains. Mounted at strategic points were cameras to capture the best of the action. Pre-match interviews were conducted in German with the players. The referee, university student George, gathered the teams together to explain a key point: any use of English would be yellow-carded, with a second offence resulting in a sending-off. The match was to be a mixture of Total Fußball, total Deutsch! The match kicked-off and turned out to be an exciting spectacle. German was heard throughout, from players, supporters, managers and referee. Just before the end, however, one player was given a second yellow for speaking English! In the end, Mr Horton’s team defeated Mr Russell’s by the comfortable margin of 3-1. There had been a number of skilful moves by the boys but it is worth highlighting that two of the best players on the pitch were girls. MR HORTON 15 This year the project for the International Event was entitled ‘Solent Moments’. 17 students from Kuerfurst-Mortiz-Schule joined 13 students from Wildern to study the variety of shipping in Southampton Water and on The Solent, recording their findings through photography and video. Our visting students and staff were at Wildern for four days of workshops and cultural visits. Day one saw them finding out more about the BBC Ten Pieces initiative (www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p01vs08w), and the pieces that were used in the Primary School events last year. They were then intoduced to ‘Night Ferry’ composed by Anna Clyne, which is amongst the Ten Classical Pieces selected by the BBC for the secondary school phase to be launched in October. The group created a visual response – art work, followed by a physical theatre improvisation during the day time workshops, before going to Royal Victoria Country Park to capture images of the various boats and ships on Southampton Water. A cultural day followed at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, with a visit to the Mary Rose, Victory and Warrior before setting off on a harbour trip where ships of all types and sizes were seen at close quarters. A trip up the Spinnaker Tower provided wide angled views of the shipping lanes, and literally hundreds of photographs were taken. The final workshop day was spent piecing together all the photos and footage using movie maker and making it link to Anna Clyne’s music. The resultant film was shared with parents and has now been sent to the BBC to feature on their Ten Pieces website! The visit was action packed and great fun. Here are some comments from participants: ‘The International Event’ is a very unique experience. I have learnt so much in such a short space of time. It is a great way to develop social, technical and creative skills, as well as meeting new friends and learning how to converse in other languages. My favourite part this year was visiting the Mary Rose and learning about its’ history. I think we all interacted well by doing the activities and helping others understand. We all spoke together and spent time learning each others opinions, I find it was a really good time for me to LUCY TILLER & LISA BARNES, STUDENTS FROM WILDERN remember for a long time. STUDENTS FROM KUERFURST-MORITZ-SCHULE INTERNATIONAL EVENT 16 BATTLE OF THE BANDS Battle of the Bands is a competition that students throughout Wildern can enter and is an opportunity for them to create a band or perform with their current band. To prepare for this event all bands must rehearse one piece to perform on the evening of the competition- this can be done at breaks, lunchtimes and outside of school. This year we had 6 bands performing. I was in a band with Izzie Humphries and we called our band Live Wireless. We both thoroughly enjoyed the evening as it was exiting to perform in front of a live audience. We performed a piece called “Boys in books are better” with Izzie playing ukulele and singing with me singing as well. It was also nice to meet and hear all the other bands. The whole evening was very well organised, with a sound check before the performance and the microphones all set up and ready for us on stage. A special thank you to the three judgesonthepanel,MrGriffiths, Miss Wyatt and Mr Wilson. The winners of the competition were a group in Year 11 who called themselves Insomnia. Overall it was an extremely fun and enjoyable evening and I hope to enter again next year. Thank you to all the members of staff that helped make Battle of the Bands happen. MARY MOSS Photograph - members of Insomnia, the winning band in Battle of the Bands 2015 Meet Our Librarian Prefect Hello, my name is Megan and I am the new Librarian Prefect here at Wildern. Ever since I applied to become a student librarian in Year 7, I had always looked to achieve the role as Librarian Prefect. Now in Year 10, I am both surprised and proud to have succeeded in securing this responsibility. It is also a way in which I am able to give something back to the LRC in my final year at Wildern, as a way of saying thank you for their support since joining the library in Year 7. As Librarian Prefect, I help the teachers within the library and volunteer to carry out duties in the LRC, as well as provide more ideas on how to improve the library. I have recently helped to select our new student librarians and will be helping to train them on their duties. So far, my experience as a student librarian has been both rewarding and enjoyable, and I am looking forward to the year ahead! Hampshire Book Award 2015 All across Hampshire, secondary school students have read their way through 6 paperback fiction books ready to choose one to be the winner of the Hampshire Book Award 2015. Wildern’s top team of 10 Year 8 students read their way through the books and met up with other students from our area. After a group discussion, they cast their vote for the book they thought was a really good book to read but also offered the reader something extra! We’ll let you know which author was chosen as the winner in the Autumn newsletter, so be sure to look out for it! We have copies of all the books in the LRC so why don’t you read some yourself and see which one is your winner….. 18 Book Review – The Lying Game by Sara Shephard If you’re a fan of Sara Shephard’s ‘Pretty Little Liars’ books or TV series, you’ll love her book ‘The Lying Game’. It is told from the point of view of Sutton Mercer, a victim of a murder that nobody knows about. When her long-lost twin sister, Emma Paxton, a foster child, hopes to meet her, she ends up getting dragged into Sutton’s life herself. But she can’t back out, as Sutton’s killer is watching her every move. Sutton watches Emma to see if she can uncover anything about who killed her and why they did it, whilst Emma needs to learn more about Sutton’s family, friends, enemies and her life. Throughout the book, more secrets about Sutton’s life get unravelled and the hole just gets darker the further Emma manages to get. This book is definitely for anyone who is interested in books that are full of mysteries and secrets. MAELLE DESMOULINS, YEAR 8 Joseph Delaney releases new book…. Joseph Delaney has just released ‘Agent 13’, his first book in an exciting new fantasy sequence. 15 year old Leif leaves home to become a warrior fighting in the notorious Arena 13 so he can avenge the death of his parents at the hand of the evil creature Hob. Fans of Joseph’s series, ‘The Spook’s Apprentice’ will be familiar with his engaging style and vivid imagination. Come and borrow it from the LRC and let us know what you think. Farewell to our Year 11 Librarians It was with a fond farewell that we said goodbye to our fab Year 11 librarians at our LRC party held for them just before they took their GCSE’s. All the librarians attended and we were able to thank Kate Heinrich-Jones, Jack Packman and Mark Vowden for all their hard work and support in the LRC over their time at Wildern. We’ll miss them but know they’ll be successful as they move on! Come and visit us in the LRC during the opening times of 8am - 5pm Computers also available for homework 19 THE DREAM SHOW IS COMING... Way, way back, many centuries ago, not long after Mr Duncombe was born…. Oh no! Not he! Yes, he! The creative genius behind the musical of the year, conveniently being ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’. Ladies and gentleman, it’s time to close your eyes, draw back the curtain and Go, Go, Go to the D@rt Centre to get your tickets. Last year our Wildern production of ‘Oliver!’ sold out long before opening night, so don’t get yourself in a jam that would’ve baffled Abraham by missing out! Join this year’s larger than life cast for a musical spectacular of colour (29 colours to be exact), laughter and even the occasional Ishmaelite and sheaf of corn. It’s not just the usual Wildern showbiz, you know. With rehearsals taking place for approximately eight hours and twenty minutes a week, we’re pulling out all the stops for the biggest, brightest show that Wildern has ever done. The cast and I, we are still waiting, but not hesitating, not just any show will do… 21st-23rd October 2015 ALEX HARRISON Book early to avoid disappointment! Tickets available from the d.@rt centre 01489-779471 In October 2014 the BBC launched the primary phase of the BBC Ten Pieces project, focussing on classical music and creativity. The d.@rt centre applied to be a Ten Pieces Champion and set about encouraging primary schools to get involved. Shamblehurst School brought their pupils over to the Wave to a screening of a specially commissioned film featuring the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, which inspired the children into creating three different responses through art, music and dance. Botley Junior School were introduced to ‘Night on Bare Mountain’ by Modest Mussorgsky, one of the Ten Pieces, and the Senior Choreographic Team, students from the Wildern Year 10 GCSE Dance group, developed a dance from their own motifs. Pupils at Freegrounds and Berrywood Schools used the Ten Pieces as part of their involvement in the Sound Waves project. So... lots of classical music was being played and used as the stimulus for creative responses around the schools and the d.@rt Centre brought this all together for one afternoon only, when a performance and exhibition of the work created was shared to parents and friends in the school hall. MRS NEASOM 20 VOLUNTEER DANCE WORK As a previous Wildern student who enjoyed dance very much, I was really excited to have the opportunity to help out in the Wildern Dance Department. I help Miss Jones by supporting students in her lessons and working on choreographic and performance skills. I have also been working with Year 7 and 8 Dance Club to help produce a performance of ‘I just can’t wait to be King’ for the Dance Showcase. The Dance Department at Wildern is excellent and I am very pleased and proud to have been able to be a part of it. CHARLOTTE RUSSELL DANCE NEWS SHREK THE MUSICAL Year 7 -10 visited the Mayflower Theatre to see 'Shrek the Musical'. Based on the award-winning film, it was a fantastic performance enjoyed by all. Shrek and his loyal steed Donkey embark on a quest to rescue the beautiful (if slightly tempermental) Princess Fiona from a fire breathing, love-sick dragon. Lord Farquaad, a gang of fairy-tale misfits, and a biscuit with attitude, all helped to make this a hilarious musical comedy! YR 8 DANCE WORKSHOP Students opting for GCSE Dance were given the opportunity to participate in an all day workshop with Lila Dance Company. 2 groups of 25 worked in parallel workshops to create a performance piece for the Dance Showcase. The students worked on technical and performance skills to build on those they have worked on in lessons and prepare for their GCSE. Students were challenged by the style of dance and movement they learned and worked really hard to make sure they had a performance piece ready for the Dance Showcase 2 days later! Congratulations to all involved! SENIOR CHOREOGRAPHIC TEAM BBC 10 PIECES PERFORMANCE Amber Ripper, Abigail Norman and Jade Ripper have been working with Botley Primary School every Monday for 6 months to create a dance performance to 'Mars' by Holst. The pupils from Botley Primary School came to Wildern on Friday 22nd May to perform their dance alongside Shamblehurst Primary School. Both performances were fantastic. Congratulations to the Senior Choreographic Team! MISS JONES Photograph from the Wildern entry in Rock Challenge 2015 This year the Wildern Technology Department were lucky enough to have been selected for a DofE funded trial. Its aim was to explore how 3D printers can be used to inspire the next generation of young adults opting for careers in specialist areas of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). We were given a 3D printer and have developed multiple exciting and cutting edge projects and extra curricular activities which have been pushing the students beyond what they would normally experience in a school workshop environment. This piece of equipment really is on the cutting edge of Design and Technology and by teaching our students how to use it early we are preparing them to thrive in a rapidly changing and developing field. Our Year 9 students have made a fantastic start to their GCSE courses. Projects have included a Light in Product Design by Hannah Stone and a Clock which was made by Lauren Daly in Resistant Materials. There is a big influence of Computer Aided Manufacture with both projects, the 3D printer was used to make the light (shown above) where Hannah used our new 3D modelling software. The clock was manufactured using a laser cutter and both students have shown an amazing amount of skill. In April we hosted our annual Design Show exhibition, every year we display the current Year 11 controlled assessment work. Our students work incredibly hard and this event is a chance to show off the amazing work produced. As usual there was a wide range of products out on display, including photographs of the delicious dishes that have been made in Food Technology. An exciting new course started this year at Wildern. A group of Year 10 students are completing a BTEC in Engineering alongside their GCSEs. With the UK needing at least 87,000 new Engineers each year, this opportunity will hopefully set these students up for a future career in the industry. The new course has given students a variety of exciting opportunities, including visits to CEMAST engineering college, RAL space, Pirtek, and a potential trip to the Southampton Boat Show.
