60 years of Metallurgy at UQ 1953-2013 Giving the gift of education Your gift to UQ Metallurgical Engineering Scholarships creates new opportunities for students who may otherwise miss out on a life-changing education. As you have been shaped by your UQ experiences, help us to do the same for future generations. www.uq.edu.au/giving/donations/ Click “Other” and type in “Metallurgical Engineering Scholarships” Introduction4 A Personal View 6 Timeline7 Program Structure10 List of Staff and Heads of Department 11 Graduation Photographs12 List of Graduates74 Thanks and Acknowledgements79 Contents 3 This booklet provides a celebration and a visual record of 60 years of Metallurgy at The University of Queensland. It is not intended to be a comprehensive history of the program as it is not possible to include all of the contributions by students and staff made over the years to the life and times of the program. Rather it is an opportunity to recall friends and colleagues and to remind ourselves that we have had the opportunity of being part of something special and of lasting value. The Department of Mining was established in 1950 and the metallurgy program introduced in 1951. The Mining and Metallurgical Engineering Department was initially located on George St. in the Brisbane city centre. In 1970, after 20 years operating in the CBD the program was moved to the “new building” at St Lucia. Mining and Metallurgical Engineering was one Introduction 4 of the last departments to transition from the George Street campus to St Lucia. Today a refurbished Frank White Annexe, named after the founding Head of Department, still forms the hub of most of the metallurgy undergraduate teaching and St Lucia-based metallurgy research activities. The Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) was also formally established in 1970 at the University mine site in Indooroopilly; this was the first stage of what is now the Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI), which consists of a number of research Centres focussed on the Minerals industry. The undergraduate metallurgy program at UQ has undergone significant changes over time, with the first Bachelor of Engineering students in Metallurgical Engineering graduating in 1953. The metallurgical engineering program followed on from the establishment of Mining Engineering in 1950. Metallurgy was then subsequently taught in conjunction with Physical Metallurgy, available as both Engineering and Science degrees. Following the establishment of a separate Materials and Manufacturing program, the BE Metallurgical Engineering program was modified to provide more focus on mineral processing and extractive metallurgy, the degree was renamed as Minerals Process Engineering and the first graduates appeared in 1988. In 2004 the joint UQ/Minerals industry taskforce was established to make recommendations on the future of both the UQ mining and metallurgy programs. The objectives of this initiative were to establish sustainable programs that provided graduates with the appropriate technical depth and breadth and knowledge and skills for employment in the minerals industry, and significantly increased student numbers. Following the recommendations of the review the dual major BE in Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering was established; the first intake to the new program was in 2006. The dual major provides the core engineering science and process engineering knowledge and skills associated with conventional chemical engineering programs. The systems approach and with it the ability to analyse and model process flow sheets has added a new dimension to the program. In addition the students are required to undertake a comprehensive suite of specialist courses in mineral processing, hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy and metallurgical plant design. With each of these changes over the years the proportion of the program that can be identified as the specialist process metallurgical component has increased. A summary of the current 4-year BE metallurgy program is provided in this booklet. The specialist metallurgy academic teaching staff complement has also increased over time and currently stands at six full-time academic metallurgy staff at St Lucia, with research staff from the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) also providing specialist teaching into the program. The research profile of the current metallurgy program has been established around three pillars linking academic staff and research higher degree students to active research Centres; Mineral processing having research collaborations with the JKMRC, Hydrometallurgy with the UQ RTA Bauxite and Alumina Technology Centre, and Pyrometallurgy with the Pyrometallurgy Research Group, PYROSEARCH. The history and fortunes of the program have followed the development of the mineral industry in the State of Queensland and Australia in general. These ups and downs both led to significant modifications in the focus of the undergraduate degree. Critical to the continuing health and vitality of the program has been the ongoing links with and financial support from the minerals industry for both undergraduate teaching and research. These links have proven vital to the sustainability of the program especially during difficult industry times. Currently, three of the six teaching academic staff positions are supported by industry investment, Xstrata, BMA and Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) through the Minerals Tertiary Education Council (MTEC). For its part the current program is consistently delivering graduates to the minerals industry in record numbers. The reputation of the program for educational initiatives and research continues to grow both within Australia and internationally. From my discussions with industry UQ metallurgy graduates are held in high regard as professional engineers; they have through their achievements contributed significantly to the reputation of the University and the development of the nation for the past 60 years. It is something we can all be proud of and I hope that this record and legacy continues well into the future. Peter Hayes, 23 November 2013 5 It is with great pleasure that I celebrate 60 years of metallurgy at UQ. It is particularly poignant now that the program is stronger than ever, having survived two periods when its existence was critically in doubt. Some may not be aware that the process metallurgy program was very close to being discontinued in 1985 and 2004. The economic rationalist view on these occasions was that if the program is not paying for itself then it should be allowed to close down. This would have left no specialist metallurgy program on the east coast of Australia. I am thankful that ultimately the industry responded to ensure our continued supply of locally trained professionals. Support came in several ways – financial, research funding, and that most scarce resource, time, to support undergraduate programs. The University also responded by modifying its programs to sustainably increase student enrolments. The events of 2004 are a cautionary tale. There will be future industry downturns. At the time when it is most difficult to do so, we will need to stand in support again. As professional engineers, or as industry managers, we clearly understand the long term value of well-trained metallurgical engineers compared with a one-off saving. A personal view Joe Pease, Chief Executive Xstrata Technology 6 I am constantly impressed by the high quality of the modern day UQ metallurgy graduates. Every metallurgy program in the world produces graduates with their own unique combination of skills, adding to the rich tapestry of our business. In the case of UQ graduates, I believe that combination includes excellent technical skills, an ability to work on a broad canvas across specialities, and the egalitarianism to both “get their hands dirty” and to confidently challenge convention. Combined with rigour and perseverance, these are the essential characteristics for the innovation that we all seek. May the metallurgy program at UQ continue to flourish!
