Memory and
Meaning
BY RABBI DAN LEVIN
[email protected]
Think back for a minute – can
you remember your earliest
memory? For me, I have a
memory of being a toddler, in
my crib, standing up to get my
pacifier after my father put me
to bed.
Most of us can probably
remember some things from
our childhood. Some of us have
more difficulty remembering
those early years, and for
others, it is better that we blot
out those memories.
For us as Jews, memory
is a sacred gift and a holy
obligation. When our loved
ones pass away, we are
obligated to honor them by
preserving their memory. We
say zichrono/ah livracha –
may his/her memory be for a
blessing. We preserve memory
through rituals like Yizkor on
holy days, and by observing
Yahrtzeit on the anniversary of
a death.
my father on bike-rides, hikes in
the mountains, afternoons on the
soccer field or riding in the car.
But because I am Jewish, my
memories extend far beyond my
birth in 1969. I remember events
long before, through the stories
my parents and family would tell
of experiences years before. But
even more than that, I am rooted
in the collective sacred memory
of the Jewish people.
The traditions we follow in these
next two months are all designed
to capture in us the collective
memory of our people.
We
observe Purim because Mordechai
insisted that we remember how
the month of Adar was changed:
“from sorrow to joy, and from
mourning to celebration” (Esther
9:22). Mordechai commanded:
“Therefore, these days are to be
remembered and kept throughout
every generation, every family,
every province, and every city”
(Esther 9:28).
The traditions we follow in these next two months are all
designed to capture in us the collective memory of our
people... “Therefore, these days are to be remembered and
kept throughout every generation, every family,
every province, and every city”
I remember when I spent
the year saying kaddish for
my father, I would take a few
minutes during the service
each morning just to close my
eyes and pick a page from that
great photo-album of memories
I have stored inside, joining
In the book of Exodus, when
the Israelites are asked to
slaughter the Passover offering,
Moses then exhorts the people:
“You shall observe this as an
institution for all time, for you
and your descendants” (Exodus
12:24). There is a sense that our
people may not remember the
significance of the ritual, and so
Moses further explains, “When
your children ask you, ‘What do
you mean by this rite?’ you shall
say, ‘it is the Passover sacrifice
to the Eternal, who passed over
the houses of the Israelites…”
(Exodus 12:26-27). The Seder
requires that we experience the
fullness of the Exodus personally.
We eat the bitter herbs because
we must ourselves experience the
bitterness of slavery. We eat the
matzah so we can taste the bread
of freedom. We tell the story of
the Exodus year after year so that
it becomes our story, so that it
is part of our collective memory,
so that we can honestly tell our
children, “This is what the Eternal
did for me when I went forth out
of Egypt.”
Beyond remembering our
ancient history, we also remember
our modern experience. We
observe the anguish of Yom

On display is The Blue Series, the record of the trials of the Nazis at Nuremberg after
World War II. These documents, traced to Justice Robert Jackson and housed at
Lynn University, were saved from destruction by Rabbi Jessica Spitalnic Brockman. They are an enduring testament to the good that lawyers and judges can do.
Former United States Senator Chris Dodd, Chairman and CEO of the Motion
Picture Association of America, Inc. (MPAA), represented Connecticut in the United
States Congress for 36 years. His book, Letters from Nuremberg: My Father’s
Narrative of a Quest for Justice is the powerful record of Dodd’s father, U.S. Senator
Thomas J. Dodd’s travels to the devastated city of Nuremberg in the summer of 1945
and his history-making role as a staff lawyer at the Nuremberg Trials.
Thomas Dodd’s days in the presence of notorious figures as Hermann Göring,
Alfred Rosenberg, Albert Speer, Joachim von Ribbentrop, and Rudolf Hess turned
into nightly letters to his wife, Grace, back in the United States.
When Christopher Dodd, who followed his father’s path to the Senate, sat down
to read the letters, he was overwhelmed by their intimacy, by the love story they
unveiled, by their power to paint vivid portraits of the accused war criminals, and by
their insights into the historical importance of the trials.

The Giving Tree helps
Family Promise on
Christmas Eve
“Each year, The Giving Tree holiday project culminates with
about 200 volunteers delivering gifts and Christmas dinner
to the residents of Dixie Manor Public Housing Community
in East Boca. Santa, elves and helpers went into 98
households with bundles of presents, bags of food, large
tins of popcorn and tons of holiday cheer.
Towards the end of the evening, I was told by a volunteer
that one apartment had no furniture. We immediately
switched into “Quiet Giving” mode and went to the
home to offer the mom and her two children furniture. To
our surprise we knew this family from Family Promise. When
all of the gifts were distributed, we took one of our trucks,
loaded the family into our cars and rushed down Dixie Hwy
to our storage facility in Delray. The family was able to take
three beds, side tables, lamps, a sectional sofa, shelving units,
TV, house wares, bedding and more. By midnight Christmas
Eve, this graduate of Family Promise transformed her
formerly empty apartment into a lovely home.”

with new promise and potential. The
assistance dogs we breed, raise and
train aren’t just the ears, hands and
legs of their human partners. They’re
also their goodwill ambassadors
and often, their best friends. They
open up new opportunities and new
possibilities. And spread incredible
joy. We unite people with dogs in a
powerful program that leads to greater
independence and self-esteem. This is
the magic of Canine Companions for
Independence.
I have been fundraising for this
amazing organization for over 10
years starting with my allowance, a
lemonade stand, and manning the
CCI booth at several dog events. I
had the rare opportunity to observe
the advanced training at the Orlando
facility and meet a few service dogs
before they are placed with their new
owners.
RAYNA HOFFMAN
My mitzvah project comes from my love of music. I have decided to raise money
for the “Landfill Harmonic Orchestra.” If you ever go to Cateura, Paraguay the
first thing that you would think is “Get me out of this dump”. And you would
be right. Cateura has literally been developed on top of a trash dump. The
inhabitants are extremely poor and barely make
ends meet. The only place the children can play is
in the trash. All these children know of are drugs,
gangs, and fighting. Favio Chavez came up with
the idea to start an orchestra, called the “Landfill
Harmonic.” But there was one problem, they
couldn’t afford instruments. “Cola,” a local trash
picker had the idea to make instruments out of
trash. Now they have trumpets made out of pipes
and cellos made from cans.
Being in Orchestra is an escape from reality for these kids. It’s one of the
best things that have ever happened to most of them. Every day I look forward
to playing my trumpet and being part of my band at Omni Middle School. I
want the same experience for the of Cateura. Donations made to the Landfill
Harmonic will help give other kids the opportunity to be part of the orchestra,
purchase sheet music, stands and instruments. I had the opportunity to speak
about the Landfill Harmonic and take up a collection at my recent band concert,
as well as hold a bake sale at Beck Family Campus. If you would like any more
information, please visit www.landfillharmonicmovie.org.
HAYDEN SIESEL
My mitzvah project is playing music for the elderly
at nursing homes. My first performance was at
Manor Care. My mitzvah project relates to my
Haftarah portion because I gathered up a group of
my friends from my band community and made a
positive impact on our local community by playing
for the elderly. In my Haftarah, King Solomon
gathered up people from his community to make
a positive impact on his local community by building a place of worship. When we
played, our audience watched intently and clapped when we finished each piece.
One man in the back was humming all of the songs. At the end, my grandma asked a
man in the front what he thought of us and he said that we were really good and he
liked our music. I felt so glad that I could do something to turn their day from bland
and dull into a day they would remember; a fun day where music filled the room and
their souls.
Music is a large part of my life. It transforms, it uplifts, and it inspires. I
gave these people at least a little hope by cheering them up. In a similar way,
the Tabernacle gave the Israelites hope to keep moving even though they had
been through tough times. When I introduced myself and my friends and told
everyone what instruments we play, one lady exclaimed with delight “Wow, this
is a real orchestra!” She was smiling and she looked so excited to hear us play.
That was probably the moment that brought the most joy to my heart and made
me realize that I was doing something right and that I was helping these people. I
look forward to performing music again for others who need it, to lift their souls
and mine in the process.

We all have memories that go way back into our
childhood of how we honored and celebrated
holidays. Family traditions are created because
we hope our children will continue on with
them. We partake in celebrations, collectively,
as a community, because the joy and the impact
they have, help us to create a lasting memory.
As a child I remember celebrating the joy of the
Torah, singing and dancing with the Rabbi and
leaving the sanctuary with a candy apple in my
hand. Passover seders were celebrated at school,
singing Echad Me Yodayah with one child from
each class represented. I can still smell the egg
barley that was served every Friday for lunch as
we welcomed in Shabbat.
When we learn about the exodus from Egypt
and retell the story of Passover, we are asked to
experience this event as if we were once slaves
ourselves. There are many rituals we perform
to engage our senses such as eating bitter herbs
and matzah, tasting the salt water, reclining in
our chairs, listening to the four questions and
searching for the afikomen.
For very young children, learning takes place
when they can experience something with all
of their senses. We begin this cycle of memory

making with something as simple as reciting
the motzi before snack and lighting candles on
Shabbat. Tasting foods, reading stories, creative
dramatic play areas, art centers and enhanced
block areas reflect the learning that takes place
in the classroom. Children can be seen building
pyramids, writing stories, graphing results after
tasting sweet and salty foods, making matzah and
singing songs.
When we immerse ourselves in traditions we
connect with our Jewish identity. We hope you
consider the Beth El Early Learning Center your
home, part of your family and the place to create
lasting memories.

Purim is the celebration of the

{PASSOVER}
What makes this holiday different than all
other holidays? For starters, we are forbidden
to eat leavened bread for seven days. We begin
the holiday of Passover by conducting Seders
(dinner feasts) for the first two nights. During the
Seder, we read the story of the Exodus from the
Haggadah, and are supposed to tell the story as if
we ourselves experienced this incredible journey
from slavery into freedom. We learn that it is our
responsibility to relive the exodus each year by
telling its story, asking questions, and by singing
the many wonderful traditional Passover songs.
In doing so, we bring the journey from slavery
into freedom to the forefront of our memory,
and are reminded to appreciate our
freedom, and what our ancestors went
through in order for us to be free. SISTERHOOD AND

Every year on Passover, we retell the story
about the Israelites being slaves in Egypt. It is
our goal to tell the story of modern day slavery
as well. We cannot forget our ancestors’ fight
for freedom and we cannot ignore the chains
of enslavement in our world today.
Please join us for a buffet dinner catered by

two amazing guest speakers:
JOY WILLIAMS, a survivor of human trafficking, tells her
experience of being trafficked from FAU as a junior and
her long struggle back to freedom.

human trafficking. She is a Professor at the Broward College

AN INTERFAITH COMMEMORATION
OF THE HOLOCAUST
{YOM HASHOAH}

On this day, we remember the
Six Million who lost their lives in
the Holocaust. But the full name of
this day is Holocaust and Heroism
Remembrance Day, and on it we think
of those we lost and those who fought to
defend and protect our people. The date
of Yom HaShoah was chosen because
of its proximity to the Warsaw Ghetto
Uprising, when tens of thousands of
Jews stood up to the Nazis. This day
reminds us of their story and invites
us to reflect on the sacrifices
that our people have made to
ensure our freedom today.
Temple Beth El is proud to host the
third annual March of Remembrance in
partnership with the Jewish Federation
of South Palm Beach County and a
wide variety of houses of worship from
across Palm Beach County.
Members of Temple Beth El will meet
at 3:00 pm at Boca Raton Christian
School (470 NW 4th Avenue), and join
the 1/2 mile march to Temple Beth El
At 4:00 pm, we will gather together
for a memorable and meaningful
Yom Hashoah program, featuring
Gil Morgenstern, Violin Virtuoso,
Cantorial Soloists Lori Shapiro and
Michelle Auslander Cohen, Temple
Beth El Choirs and local Clergy and
Community Leaders.
This event is free and open to the

Keeping our
Memories Alive
continued from page 3
HaShoah, and honor the six
million murdered in the evil
horror of the Holocaust.
We listen anxiously to the
testimony of survivors while
we can still hear their stories
in their own voice, so that
we can be the ones who
will tell their stories and
root their experience in the
memories of our children and
grandchildren whom they will
never meet.
We also observe Yom
HaZikaron – Israeli Memorial
Day, and Yom HaAtzma’ut
– Israeli Independence Day.
Though we live here in
America, these days help us
to find in our own experience
the immortal words of the
medieval Spanish poet
Yehuda HaLevi: “My heart is
in the East, and I am at the
edge of the West.”
The power of Jewish
tradition is the manner in
which it forms our sacred
collective memory. It weaves
our individual experience
into the tapestry of Jewish
tradition and Jewish life. It
allows for us to connect not
simply with our people in our
day and age, but to connect
with our people across
time and space so that truly
we are one. And when we
secure our collective sacred
memory in our hearts and
our souls, we become not
simply one with our people,
but more one with our God
who is One with All.

It is moments like these that cause us to
recall a special memory from our childhood

memories for the children of Temple Beth El.
It is for this reason that we once again look

well as challah and “wine” for Purim. It is
truly a pleasure to share these moments with

Frequent breakdowns. Sluggish email. Stalls and
slow startups. It’s not a pretty sight. And the
damage takes its toll in lost time, wasted money,
and hard work that goes up in smoke.
PJ Tech has been a proud partner of Temple Beth El
for 16 years. We built and maintain the network
that keeps things moving. TBE’s network works
because we do.
So if you’re ready to get up and running, and stay
that way, give us a call for a free assessment.
