The Academy Mission Statement
Pursuing Truth, Wisdom, Excellence
The Academyʼs mission is to assist families in developing exemplary citizens by
equipping students with core foundational knowledge enabling them to be culturally
literate, prepared for college, and virtuous in character. We accomplish this through a
rigorous curriculum of traditional content taught in a safe environment.
Executive Director’s Role
Overall View Designed To Serve Entire Community
By John Kaufman, Executive Director
Occasionally, I am asked
about my role and responsibilities
here at The Academy. Usually I
think of the duties and tasks I perform. However, these change daily.
What remains constant is
the perspective I apply to my job
here at the school. With the variety
of things I do as your Executive
Director, I keep first things first as
described here.
Three things are necessary
to keep any organization healthy.
These apply to all schools including The Academy.
First, The Academy must
have a positive financial balance of
income less expenses. A positive
balance indicates a thriving, successful school. If we have a negative balance for very long, we have
to close the school.
In years like the present one
when funding has become such a
significant issue, this simple reality
becomes more important. All decisions that I make must ultimately
take this financial balance into account.
Second, we must have
employees that are of high quality and satisfied. Due to the perpetual competition charter schools
must meet from the surrounding
choices available to our families,
The Academy has to provide a high
quality education. This competition
comes from the surrounding public,
private and other charter schools.
The Academy’s employees
are the school’s greatest asset; most
significantly setting us apart from
this competition.
Satisfied employees will, in
general, remain with an organization or school. Employees that are
not satisfied will not. Satisfaction is
a personal choice, of course. Satisfaction depends upon individuals’
views of the school’s attributes in
areas such as salary, challenges,
interesting work, peers, leadership,
environment, and their students.
Third, The Academy has to
have you - our students and their
families. You are our customers;
the reason for our existence in the
first place. Overall, you need to be
satisfied with the educational product we offer, or you will go to one
of the numerous other choices that
I cite above.
Families and students have
to prefer our teachers, building,
location, curriculum, supervision,
overall program or even the ability
to provide input on changing any
of these factors. This is what keeps
families choosing The Academy,
and choosing to stay. Without your
faith and trust, there is no Academy.
Every decision that I make,
action I take, and word I speak here
at The Academy keeps these three
things in mind. It is the reality I
manage, daily, and it is a wonderful
challenge.
If you have any questions
about this, or anything else, I am
always available to chat: (303)
289-8088 x 110, or john.kaufman@

Notes from the Elementary Director
By Mitzy Lurvey
We have a lot going on here at
The Academy this month. Please make
note of the following:
•Staff Appreciation Week – May 4th – 8th
If you are so inclined, we would
appreciate your donations of breakfast or
snack items each day of Staff Appreciation
Week. The wonderful items you bring are
always much appreciated by the teachers and staff and are a terrific way to say
thank you for their loyal service and dedication. They will be shared with the entire
staff of The Academy. As always, you will
receive volunteer time for your purchases.
In addition, Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week is a very appropriate time
for you to write a thank you note to your
favorite teachers to tell them specifically
how they have made a meaningful impact
in your student’s growth.
•Teacher Requests – Observations from
May 1st – 15th
Request forms will be available
in the Reception Office on May 1. Please
complete your observations by May 15th
and return your request form to the Reception Office no later than May 22.

helping.

By Dr. Mark Langston

“There’s a light in the depths of your darkness.” -Dan Fogelberg
The year has flown by quickly.
Though this is the last note inside the
school year I will write – there is still so
much going on. Below is a list of key
dates and events – by no means is this an
exhaustive list – please surf to the school
webpage for the complete calendar.
Calendar Items:
May 6th Make up for the ACT
May 22nd Last Day for Seniors
Senior Awards Night
May 25th Memorial Day
May 28th 9th-11th Grade
Awards Night
May 29th Last Day of School
Graduation Rehearsal
May 30th Graduation Day
June 3rd Last Teacher Workday
Please take note of the final exam
schedule for the last week of school – it
is similar to the schedule we followed in
December – which spaces out the exams –
and builds in a time for makeups. Seniors
will take their finals the prior week in
regularly scheduled classes.
To the Seniors (Class of 2009)
who are moving on to another phase of
your life – thanks for your time and efforts
– and come visit us sometime. As you are
reflecting on your future – remember to
finish high school strong with As and Bs.
To the students in the lower grades, get all
of your grades up to As and Bs so that you
can keep working toward your goals – and
we’ll see you in August. To the parents,
this is an incredibly busy part of the school
year. Please stay engaged in your child’s
school progress and help keep attendance
up to help assure maximum achievement.
Thanks goes out to all the teachers who work with your children. It is a
privilege to work with them and to watch
them helping your children learn. My
heartfelt thanks to the teachers, especially
for spending all the extra hours providing
extra help to the students.

News from the Health Clinic
By Marjolene Rose, R.N.
Outdoor Education for 6th graders is September 8th – 11th, 2009. Therefore, if your student requires
any medication(s), prescription or nonprescription, your
physician MUST complete a medication form and your
SIGNATURE is also required. There are forms available
at the school’s website, under the heading health clinic. Go
to the end of the page and click on forms. If your student
requires multiple medications, please complete the 6th
GRADE CAMP FORM.
Parents, no students will be given ANY MEDICATION unless there is a medication form completed by
your physician, dentist, or other authorized personnel. It
must be furnished by the parent/guardian of the student in
a container dispensed by a pharmacy or original over-thecounter container which is labeled with the student’s name,
medication name, dosage, and time when the medication is
to be dispensed. ALL STUDENTS MUST ADHERE TO
THIS POLICY REGARDLESS OF WHAT HAS BEEN
DONE IN THE PAST. If you take your child to the doctor
and the doctor prescribes medication, make sure the doctor
fills out a form stating the above information. This also applies to your dentist and orthodontist.
If your child has medication in the clinic, it must
be picked up by May 22, 2009. Any remaining medications
will be sent home with your child during the week of May
26th.
Parents of 6th, 7th, 8th, 10th, 11th, and 12th
graders: your child is required to have the TDAP vaccination before the beginning of the 2009-2010 school year.
Tri-County Health Department has an Immunization Line
that you may call to set up an appointment, (303) 4510123. The health facilities usually run out of immunizations due to the high volume of students trying to obtain
immunizations at the end of the summer months. Therefore, we strongly suggest that you make early summer
appointments to get these immunizations completed.
Colorado Seniors Make a Difference in Central America
By: Shawn Pendergrass
SAN JOSE, COSTA RICA April 7, 2009 – Ten feet and four inches—
that’s the depth of the hole a group of 11 high school seniors from the Denver
area dug over their spring break on the remote island of Solarte in Bocas del
Toro, Panama, inhabited by the indigenous Guaymi people. The hole that was
more than three times as deep as it was wide was excavated so that the school
children would have an outhouse to use during the school day. The group of seniors took on several other projects in preparation for the first day of classes on
April 6 such as painting the school, cleaning the classrooms, collecting school
supplies and picking up trash in the community.
While one group was impacting a small community in Panama, another group of
students was devoting efforts to environmental concerns in Costa Rica at a sea turtle
conservation site on the Pacific Coast. Some of the efforts included beach patrols,
planting trees, clearing nesting areas, and constructing a dock.
The trip, however, was not all work and no play—while not building privies or
saving sea turtles, these young world-changers enjoyed activities such as rafting, snorkeling and surfing, as well as interacting and
making friends with the locals.
Reflecting on the course, Academy senior
Jordan Newsom said, “It was a challenging, exciting and amazing trip that has truly
enhanced my life. I’ve made lasting friendships and the lessons I’ve learned will
remain with me forever.” The students returned home refreshed and energized, with
a new perspective on the world and the beauty it holds.
The students who participated in the project represent fourteen high schools
and are all part of Leader’s Challenge, a Colorado based non-profit organization that
promotes leadership development among high school students through experiential
education programs.
George Brown of Leader’s Challenge organized the trip through collaboration with the Costa Rica Outward
Bound School, an organization that encourages character development, leadership, and self-discovery through challenge
and adventure. Costa Rica Outward Bound has differentiated itself from other Outward Bound schools by offering a wide
array of wilderness adventure courses that enhance cultural and global awareness throughout Central America.
For more information about Leader’s Challenge, contact George Brown at (303) 243-3105. For information about
the Costa Rica Outward Bound School, contact Shawn Pendergrass at 1-800-676-2018.

What is “Pennies for Peace?”
By Laura Hinkson
Pennies for Peace is an organization started by Greg Mortenson to help support students in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The
goal of Pennies for Peace is to educate students about the world beyond their experiences and to show them that they can
make a positive impact on a global scale, one penny at a time.
Did you know…
1 Penny = a Pencil
2-3 Pennies = an eraser
15 Pennies = one notebook
$20 = one child’s school supplies for one year
$50 = one treadle sewing machine and supplies
$100 = maternal healthcare supplies for one year
$300 = one advanced student’s annual scholarship
$600 = one teacher’s annual salary
$5,000 = support for an existing school for one year
$50,000 = one school building and support for five years
Here at The Academy we are going to raise as many pennies as we can to help build new schools, maintain existing
schools, and supply materials to needy students. Starting April 20th all elementary classes and secondary advisory classes
will compete to see who can raise the most pennies.
If you have any questions please contact Junior Tri-M and Students 4 Students, sponsors Ms. Hinkson and Mr. Guerrieri.
Building a Library of Books
By Brittany Burnett, fifth grader, in Mrs. Kitterman’s
class
How many books are in the school library?
Well, our school library has about 18,000. But, unfortunately, a local school nearby did not have any
library or classroom books at all!
Our fifth grade class did a service project to
collect books for them. We worked on it for just about
a month to get as many books as possible. We donated books that were as good as new from our homes to
this school. We feel books are a tool that every child
should be able to use. Now the school’s library and
classrooms have hundreds of books to enjoy that they
did not have just a month ago!
