Build Background
Read the title and talk about the cover photograph. Tell children that this book will give
facts about ducks. Build interest by asking questions such as the following: ¿Alguna vez
vieron patos? ¿Dónde? ¿Qué estaban haciendo los patos?
Introduce the Text
Guide children through the text, helping with unfamiliar words so they can read the text
successfully. Here are some suggestions:
Page 2: Explain that in this book, children will read about how ducks live.
Suggested language: Vayan a la página 2. Observen la fotografía. ¿Qué ven?
¿Creen que a los patos les gustaría vivir aquí? Las oraciones dicen: En primavera
el sol brilla. Todavía no hace mucho calor. Digan primavera. ¿Con qué sonido

represent them.
Phonemic Awareness and Word Work
Provide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities:
• Blend Sounds Say words from Los patos, syllable by syllable, and have children say
the whole word. Words to use: nadan, volando, bueno, huevos, invierno, primavera.
• Words with Syllables Ending in r Write these words from the selection on the board:
calor, mejor. Underline the syllables ending in r. On their whiteboards, have children
write two other words with syllables ending in r.

Have children use some of the photos in Los patos to tell about the way ducks look.

the board or on a large strip of paper.
