When School’s Out...
Clubs Are In!
2014 Annual Report
Officers’ Welcome
At 3:00 PM across America, the school bell rings for our children and teens.
School is over for the day and more than 15 million children and teens leave
with no place to go, placing them at risk of being unsupervised, unguided and
unsafe. As the preeminent provider of youth services in Hartford, Boys & Girls
Clubs of Hartford is committed to solving this issue at the local level. Every
child in our community deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential by
having access to a safe, supportive place to go both after school and during the
summer. When School’s Out, Clubs Are In!
In this Annual Report, we showcase how our Clubs put more than 5,000 of
Hartford’s children and teens on the path to Great Futures, substantiated by
findings from our 2014 Outcomes Report. This measurement study details the
achievement of our Club kids and the positive effect the Club experience has on
their development. Based on our priority outcomes of Academic Success, Good
Character and Citizenship, and Healthy Lifestyles, our 2014 Outcomes Report
represents how our members receive the vital mentoring, education and support
they need to BE GREAT.
Although the results of our Outcomes Report are promising for the future of
our Club kids, we need your help to enable even more of Hartford’s children and
teens to reach their full potential. For those of you who continually
support us—either as a donor or a volunteer—thank you! For those who would
like to become more involved, we welcome dedicated individuals to help us
inspire Great Futures for Hartford’s youth.
From all of us at Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford, thank you for your continued
support of our mission and for helping GREAT FUTURES START HERE.

2014 Youth of the Year
Woodlyn Joachim
Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford is a support system
that I will carry with me for the rest of my life. The
shy timid girl who met Miss Shannon at the Southwest
Club is long gone! All because I Opened the Door to
Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford.
Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford and the State of
Connecticut 2014 Youth of the Year, Woodlyn
Joachim embodies the power of dedication and perseverance in shaping a young
person’s life to BE GREAT. Overcoming economic hardship and homelessness,
Woodlyn’s resilience and motivation to improve her own life and the lives
around her is a compelling force in her life. Her determination to enrich the lives
of others was supported and reinforced by the programs, members and staff of
Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford.
Woodlyn grew up in Haiti. In January of 2010, Woodlyn and her mother
survived the devastating Haiti earthquake, rendering them homeless. It was not
until months later that Woodlyn and her mother’s U.S. Visas were accepted.
They arrived in America for the first time in October of 2010.
After joining the Southwest Boys & Girls Club, Woodlyn emerged as an
impressive young person and role model, embracing leadership opportunities in
a variety of Club programs. For instance, Woodlyn participated in the Keystone
Club, a teen leadership program, where she volunteered over 550 hours.
Outside of Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford, Woodlyn graduated salutatorian
at Journalism and Media Magnet Academy with a 3.9 GPA. Currently enrolled
at the University of Connecticut, Woodlyn aspires to be a Pediatric Oncologist.
Her lifelong goal is to return to Haiti to open her own orphanage in an effort to
provide medical and social support to the many children in need.
Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford could not be more proud of her success!
