2013 annual report - Flying Horse Farms
OUR 2013 FAMILY ALBUM:
celebrating a year of milestones
2013 ANNUAL REPORT
OUR
MISSION
IS MAGIC.
We provide magical, transformative camp experiences
for children with serious illnesses — free of charge.
When you come through the gates of Flying Horse Farms, the first thing you see is the sign that says,
“Welcome home.” More than a simple greeting, this sentiment is one of the unique core values that
guide us and hold us together as an organization.
Throughout this inaugural annual report, we’ll share more of the values that move us and the moments
that inspire us — not to mention many other exciting, first-time and important 2013 milestones we’re
proud of and delighted by, such as:
• We welcomed home 698 campers and families during six summer residential camp weeks, and eight family
and alumni camp weekends
• Our medical and hospital partnerships are stronger than ever — doctors and nurses from each of our partner
hospitals continue to provide on-site medical care that instills peace of mind for parents and offers respite from
the everyday worries of life for our campers
• We installed our new ropes course just in time for the summer residential camp season, so campers could
conquer their fears from 40-feet in the air
• The American Camp Association honored us with accreditation and a program excellence award
• Canine counselors returned and we hosted our first Kentucky Derby
• Our Alcoa Good & Green Fellows returned home for another camp season to create sustainability-focused
learning opportunities for our campers
• And so much more — flip through our 2013 family album and annual report to help us celebrate every milestone
We are overwhelmingly grateful for our passionate and dedicated community of supporters:
the thousands of volunteers who generously give their time and talent to camp, the donors who
support our financial needs (allowing all campers to attend camp free of charge), the medical partners
who introduce their patients to camp, and the families who trust us to provide the very best medical
care and transformative camp experiences for their campers.
Thanks to each of you for making the power of camp possible. Your efforts and support allow us to do
the work we do. On behalf of our campers and all of us on the crew, “Thank you.” And please —
come visit us soon.
Without you, we couldn’t fill our camp with campers and these pages with magic.
DID YOU
KNOW?
Happy camping,
We’re the first camp in the Midwest to become a full member of the
SeriousFun Children’s Network, the world’s largest family of camps
for children with serious illnesses. Founded in 1988 by Paul Newman,
the Network has collectively served more than 440,000 children from
five continents and 50 countries.

To those who know it, it’s just “camp,” the best place on
earth. And when they’re here, kids aren’t sick. They aren’t
different. They aren’t patients. They’re just kids.
Located on 200 wooded acres of rolling hills in the heart
of the Midwest, Flying Horse Farms is a place where,
for a weekend or week at a time, illness takes a backseat
to being a kid.
With 192 bunk beds, four teepees, a fleet of canoes, a highflying ropes course, archery and much more, our ACAaccredited camp offers endless opportunities for adventure
and exploration — a place where every moment is focused on
creating transformative camp experiences.
Here, there’s freedom. There’s comfort and campfires,
laughter and sleeping bags and midnight snacks. There are
new friends and old songs, first bulls-eyes and fish-kisses.
Here is home.

Board Emeritus and Founder
DID YOU
KNOW?
Flying Horse Farms is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit
organization. All of our operating costs are underwritten
by the generosity of others. We’re funded by gifts from
individuals, corporate partners, grants and foundations.
4
5
CAMPERS FIRST.
Every decision we make has our campers’
best interests at heart. It’s that simple.
ALL CREW.
NO PASSENGERS.
It’s the most appropriate line in each of our
job descriptions: “other duties as assigned.”
We all do what it takes to get the job done—
no matter how big or how small the task.
SEE THE BEST
IN EACH OTHER.
Every person involved with Flying Horse Farms—staff,
volunteers, donors, and campers—hold one core belief
above all else: that this place has the power to transform
the lives of children with serious illnesses for good.
Every day, we work to make that happen for more
children. These are the values that guide us.
6
We treat each other how we’d like to be treated.
It’s an old rule, but it rings especially true at
camp. It empowers us to be better team players,
to create a friendly atmosphere, to have fun,
and to accomplish big things for our campers.
FEARLESS
IS FREE.
We believe the only way to spread our wings
and fly is to take risks—boldly. We are each
empowered to make change when we think
it’s needed. That means thinking on our feet,
being creative, and doing more with less.
WELCOME HOME.
We are welcoming—to everyone, and at all
times. Our campers, staff, volunteers, and
donors will always feel a sense of belonging
and appreciation here. Some call it being
nice. We call it the best customer service
on the planet.
WITH TRUST
COMES RELIEF.
We earn the trust of our campers
and families by offering compassion,
commitment, and the highest quality medical
care possible. This creates peace of mind for
parents and respite from the worries of daily
life for our campers.
CELEBRATE EVERY
MILESTONE.
We help our campers achieve things they
never thought possible. And as a camp, we
accomplish seemingly insurmountable tasks
without flinching. The best part? We take
time to celebrate our successes every step of
the way. (Usually with a dance, a costume, or
maybe even a squirt gun.)
GIVING FEELS GOOD.
Our camp thrives because of the work of our
volunteers. We know there are countless
volunteer opportunities available—so we work
to make ours unforgettable and life-changing.
And we’re not surprised when it results in
arm-hair-raising, happy-tear-inducing,
deep-from-the-belly laughter and joy.
ANYONE CAN GIVE.
Everyone is a potential donor. To inspire
them to give, we connect them to camp
in a way that makes their gifts tangible
and rewarding. That means listening
to our donors, recognizing them, and
communicating with them at every level.
A SIMPLE THANK YOU
GOES A LONG WAY.
We have stacks of thank you notes, and
we use them. A lot. For volunteers, donors,
supporters, and friends. And we say more
than thanks; we share the impact they have
on camp and celebrate their role in our
extraordinary work.

HEALTH CARE
HEROES
The worry-free respite camp offers is made possible by our 24/7 health
center, the WellNest, staffed by medical professionals from children’s
hospitals across the Midwest. Because of these caregivers, campers
and their families truly can leave their worries beyond the gate.
We’re honored to have partnerships with eight Ohio children’s hospitals
and the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. These partners connect us to
kids in need of camp and dedicate their time to creating a medically
sound environment.

Every time I drive away from Flying Horse
Farms, I do so with a smile on my face.
The staff, the volunteers, the physicians
and nurses, and all the counselors who
make an impact on the campers have
reaffirmed my faith in the human condition.
There is a deep-seated desire to do great
things for these children.

THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER
As one of the youngest boys at our 2013
rheumatology-GI camp, camper Wyatt was a
little shy and had trouble communicating with
his cabinmates and counselors.
But Wyatt’s counselors quickly noticed that the
normally shy boy lit up when playing with the
camp canines. They encouraged him to sign
up for the canine program, and he played and
walked with the dogs all week. His counselors
also noticed he spoke up more when he was
around his pup pals.
14
They recommended Wyatt for camp’s Kentucky
Derby, where he and a few fellow campers ran
their dogs through an obstacle in front of the
whole camp. Wyatt and his dog, Max, won the
derby in front of an audience full of proud,
tearful counselors.
And after seeing the transformative effect the
dogs had on him, Wyatt’s family later applied
for a therapy dog of his own.

2013 RANGERS SAY GOODBYE...FOR NOW
$875,652
Total revenue:
$3,735,612
Being at camp reaffirmed my belief in
who I am. Flying Horse Farms literally
means everything to me, and there is
no better place on this planet.
Campers become empowered
through camp. When they
are given opportunities to
succeed and learn, they
grow as individuals. It gives
campers and families hope.
—Camp volunteer
A touching addition to the 2013 Ranger Program experience,
the closing ceremony took place on the rangers’ last full night
at camp. Blindfolded, they took part in a trust walk across camp
to the Outpost campsite — deepening their connection to each
other and the Flying Horse Farms crew.
Once they reached the Outpost and their blindfolds were removed,
the rangers were honored at a ceremony and assigned a spirit animal
to recognize their special, individual traits. Staff bestowed one brave
and courageous — yet caring and cuddly — ranger with the grizzly bear
as his spirit animal.
After a week of diligently serving the campers, working together to
scale the wall and conquering their fears on the ropes course, the
rangers solidified their bond and found new strength within themselves
and in each other.
One of the rangers, Eryn, spoke at the ceremony about her
unforgettable experience.
“People say that fairy tales are about teaching kids lessons, but they’re
really about slaying dragons,” she said. “And people say that camp is
about illness, but it’s really about teaching you how to slay dragons.”
15
YOU RAISED MORE THAN
$700,000
Last year, five Flying Horse Farms events and 34 more,
hosted by friends like you, focused on one important
goal: sending children with serious illnesses to camp
(and having plenty of worthwhile fun along the way).
The results were inspiring — $700,000 that went to
creating lifelong memories for campers.
CAMPFIRE 2013
On April 19, Flying Horse Farms
gathered with 350 friends at
Severance Hall in Cleveland for
Campfire 2013. The event was
emceed by Kris Pickel of WKYC,
and included a tribute to Paul Newman, a special
guest appearance by Clea Newman, Paul Newman’s
daughter, and performances by Broadway star NaTasha
Yvette Williams, the Near West Theatre and our campers.
COLUMBUS
FLYATHLON
One hundred and fifteen
participants ages 7–15 and
113 volunteers came out
to Glacier Ridge Metro Park
near Columbus, Ohio, for a
fun day of running and biking on June 2. Thanks to their
efforts, more people now know about our mission, and
how they can help.
The bar, the roof, our spirits: you raised a lot in 2013.
And we couldn’t be more grateful for your incredible
support and passion.
CLEVELAND
FLYATHLON
Flying Horse Farms invited
Cleveland-area kids ages 7–17 to
lace up their sneakers and hop on
their bikes to raise support and
awareness for our campers on September 29.
Sixty participants and 80 volunteers made this inaugural
event a high-flying success.
BENEATH
THE STARS
The Magic Makers hosted their
third annual — and most successful
— Beneath the Stars event yet
on November 8, drawing a crowd
of 450 supporters for live music,
food and drink, dancing, camper stories and a special
appearance by Clea Newman. Magic Makers Aimee White,
Helena Anderson, Linda Tulley and Jenny Entler provided
essential leadership for the event.
SUPERHERO CAMP
CHALLENGE
On October 20, the Superhero Camp
Challenge brought 70 participants
ages 7-15 and 110 volunteers to camp
for obstacle course runs — with no time clock, and no
first or last place. Every participant received a cape, mask
and wrist cuffs at the caping ceremony, and the satisfaction
of knowing they helped bring the power of camp to
more kids.
“The best experience from this camp
session was seeing Luke, who uses
a wheelchair, be able to zip-line and
complete the high ropes course.
It absolutely embodied the magical
spirit of camp and the endless
possibilities for growth that make the
kids want to come back every year!
THE POWER
OF CAMP IS
SPREADING.
Thank you to the sponsoring organizations for
these amazing 2013 honors and accolades.

HEALTH CARE HERO AWARD
LEARNING THE ROPES
After a summer of teaching her campers to conquer their fears, camp
counselor and Alcoa Fellow, Sarah Kersey, heard the question she was
dreading. Her stomach sank to her feet when a camper asked her
about her own experience on the ropes course.
“Flying Horse Farms gave me such strength to overcome my fears,”
Sarah said. “I watched as our first set of campers went on the ropes
course this summer, and I was yelling up to them, “You can do this. I
see strength. I see courage. I see you conquering your fears. Little did
anyone else know, I didn’t want anything to do with that ropes course.”

Sarah knew she had to act. After all, how could she help campers
overcome their fears when she hadn’t faced her own? After finding out
that Mimi Dane, CEO of Flying Horse Farms, also faced a similar fear of
the ropes, the two conquered the course together.

Since 2011, we’ve partnered with Alcoa Foundation to bring
college students to camp through Alcoa Good & Green
Fellowships. Alcoa Fellows work as counselors and camp
leaders, while helping to establish environmental and
sustainability-focused learning opportunities.
These projects are not only beneficial to camp, but for
campers, who get a unique opportunity to interact
with nature in new ways and learn about protecting
and nurturing the environment.
Just a few projects Good & Green Fellows
rocked out in 2013:
GETTING
WILD
FOR GOOD
• T he Eat Well Plate – like the food pyramid, but
focused on sustainability and nutrition
•D
ietary Needs Board – making sure campers
individual dietary needs are met
• The Patch – worked on weeding, planting and
harvesting the garden and created learning materials
•G
ranny B Farms – toured and tended crops at this
Centerburg, Ohio farm that provides camp with organic herbs,
fruits and vegetables
•C
ompost bins – reconstructed the compost bin system at camp
and educated campers about composting
• S ensory Garden – created a stone path and seating for the
garden, so campers have a beautiful, peaceful escape that
heightens all of their senses
And Alcoa Fellows have a lot more in store for the future,
including building hydroponic gardens and mapping a nature
walk for campers. In fact, the fellows program has been such
a success that it’s expanding to six additional camps in
the SeriousFun Children’s Network in 2014.
· BATOR TABOR, HUNGARY
· CAMP KOREY, WASHINGTON
· DOUBLE H RANCH, NEW YORK
· OVER THE WALL, GREAT BRITAIN
· THE HOLE IN THE WALL GANG CAMP, CONNECTICUT
· THE PAINTED TURTLE, CALIFORNIA
The Alcoa Green & Good Fellowship program
is growing more than just our gardens.
This was the first time we witnessed
our daughter let her hair down and be
a kid. The cloud of depression, sadness
and loneliness gave way to excitement;
she had a new outlook on the world.
She found a culture of hope that fed
her soul.

A HORSE OF A DIFFERENT COLOR
Seeing Color Olympics through the eyes of one of our dedicated volunteers
Some of my favorite camp moments are when the whole camp: kids,
volunteers, staff, our medical team — everyone — is immersed in the
magic and spirit of Flying Horse Farms.
I noticed this amazing energy for the first time during the all-camp
activity, Color Olympics, which took place as part of our very first
residential camp for kids with heart conditions.
It was a hot day, and the local fire department let us borrow a hose for
the event. During Color Olympics, campers visit various stations with
their cabins and get really, really messy with paint, slime and shaving
cream — you name it, they’ll probably end up wearing it.
By the end of the hour, the entire camp was covered head-to-toe,
with only white smiles shining through. So, our doctor for the week,
Dr. Boyle, led the whole camp running through the fire hose. That’s
when one of our campers, completely drenched at this point, looked
up at me and yelled, “I love camp!”
It was an incredible day. There wasn’t a frown on the farm.
