Welcome to our biggest AusRAIL yet, AusRAIL PLUS 2011!
This year our exhibition space fills three halls of the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, a total of
15,000 sqm! The exhibition space alone is 40% larger than the last AusRAIL PLUS held in Adelaide two
years ago.
Around 300 companies will be showcasing their products and services, with double the number of stands from
International organisations than ever before.
The continued growth of our annual conference can be likened to the growth in our industry.
Over the past two years, freight rail movements increased a record 18% to 853.5 million tonnes per annum and passenger
trips grew to 769.9 million annual journeys, or by more than 6%.
This is equivalent to rail freight moving an additional 130 million tonnes or an increase of more than 178,000 tonnes per
day. Similarly, the additional 43.5 million passenger journeys equates on average to an additional 60,000 passengers using
our network each day.
To move an additional one million tonnes of freight by rail freight, one new train set, more tracks, more engineers and
more technicians are required. The same goes for the passenger network. While every jurisdiction is purchasing new rolling
stock, these will only meet today’s increase in capacity. Much more will be needed in the future especially if we are going to
replace the 30 year old locomotives on our tracks today.
With this in mind, AusRAIL PLUS 2011 focuses on ‘Innovation and Customer Relations’. We need to work collaboratively as
an industry to develop innovative and progressive ways to increase the capacity of our networks so we can meet demand.
We need to ensure that we do this by building better relationships with our passengers as well as our existing and potential
customers moving freight.
AusRAIL has grown to become a truly international event, with regular attendance from Australasia, Europe, North and
South America, Africa and Asia.
Over the three days you will join more than 1000 delegates and learn from more than 100 rail industry executives.
As well as conference program and trade stalls, be sure to make the most of the social events, the RTAA Yellow Tie Dinner
and AusRAIL PLUS Gala Dinner. The Gala Dinner will see delegates taken on a specially chartered train from Brisbane’s
South Bank, to Ascot Station out at Eagle Farm Racecourse.
At the Gala Dinner, we will again award the Industry Awards for Excellence which continues to receive fantastic industry
support with the number and quality of applications growing every year.
I look forward to meeting you and your colleagues at AusRAIL PLUS 2011.
Yours sincerely,
Bryan Nye
