A Place to Imagine: A Special New Sandbox
John McGrath (former CPSE/CSE Chairperson of Phelps Clifton School District)
contacted Happiness House regarding the building of a sandbox/play structure
for the Geneva playground. John and his family wished to do this in memory
of his wife – who was an educator herself. John and his family contacted WFL
BOCES and the senior carpentry students from that program and actually built
the sandbox from the ground up with the materials that John’s family purchased.
The sandbox is now complete and it is beautiful! The sandbox is adorned with a
wooden plaque made by McGrath’s grandson.
Say Cheese!
The Traumatic Brain Injury Photo Club began a Photo Booth project using their new
Polaroid camera with the Teens & Tweens group at Happiness House. The children
dressed in costume with an Independence Day theme and each went home with
a Polaroid picture of themselves. Photo club members made sure the Teens and
Tweens received the full model experience helping them with costume and posing.
The Photo Club promises additional photo booth opportunities in the future.

Enter into an Executive
Staffing Agreement
Happiness House/United Cerebral Palsy of
the Finger Lakes has signed an Executive
Staffing Agreement to provide senior
leadership to Rochester Rehabilitation on
Elmwood Avenue in Monroe County. I assumed
the role of CEO of Rochester Rehabilitation effective March 13, 2015.
This Executive Staffing Agreement is quite similar to the agreement established
in May 2013 when I became president of CP Rochester/United Cerebral Palsy
Association of the Rochester Area following the retirement of that agency’s
president. Happiness House and CP Rochester further enhanced their
relationship in December 2014 by forming Ability Partners, Inc., a passive
parent corporation overseeing both agencies as independent subsidiaries.
With this current Executive Staffing Agreement, Happiness House, Rochester
Rehabilitation, and CP Rochester remain separate entities.
The Boards of Directors of Happiness House, CP Rochester, and Rochester
Rehabilitation have worked together over the past few months and recognize
the immense value to be gained for all three agencies via this Executive
Staffing Agreement. It will enhance the scope of high quality services of the
organizations, provide a larger operational platform, leverage resources, and
enhance cost-effectiveness.
Founded in 1919, Rochester Rehabilitation operates six services in the
rehabilitative areas of adaptive sports and inclusive recreation, employment
and job support, driver evaluation and training, and mental health services.

Happiness House Student Teacher
Receives Academic Excellence Award
Kelsey Burbank recently received the Academic Excellence Award in Early
Childhood from Keuka College. This award is given to the student that exemplifies
high grades and participation that goes above and beyond that of their classmates
in the field of study over a four year period. Two students are awarded this honor
per major.
Kelsey was a student teacher at Happiness House in the Blue Room at the Geneva
site with Lu Ann Ryan and Jill Kaim.
Kelsey graduated from Keuka College this year with a Bachelor’s of Science degree
in Early Childhood and Special Education with a concentration in Global Studies.
Kelsey plans to begin her job search near her home in Chemung, New York. This
summer she plans to work at Elderwood at Waverly Nursing Home as a dietary aide.

Autism

Each April, we commemorate Autism Awareness Month. At this time we make
a special effort to shed light on the issues facing those who live with autism
spectrum disorder (ASD) and their families. The community is at its best when
everyone works together to ensure their neighbors are able to lead a happy
and successful lifestyle. Few areas in the state exemplify that like the Finger
Lakes region. The Autism Society states that ASD is a complex developmental
disability defined by certain behaviors and is a “spectrum condition” that affects
individuals differently and to varying degrees. Working together to ensure
programs that help those with ASD are adequately funded, we can create a
better community for everyone. It is of the utmost importance that we support
organizations that help those in need, like Happiness House. Dedicating my
time to advocate for and on behalf of those with developmental disabilities
has proven to be a truly rewarding experience. Lawmakers in Albany must do
their best to strengthen programs that support people with autism, as well as
the developmentally disabled. It is our duty to ensure that the people in our
communities are able to reach their greatest potential. In the spirit of Autism
Awareness Month, I encourage you to learn more about ASD and the people it
affects by participating in events that benefit those with autism.

2015 Financial Executive of the Year Award

Patricia Cunningham serves as the Executive Vice President/Chief Financial Officer of CP Rochester/United Cerebral Palsy
Association of the Rochester Area Inc. and Happiness House/Finger Lakes United Cerebral Palsy Inc. She was honored this
year by Rochester Business Journal as recipient of the 2015 Financial Executive of the Year Award.
Since being named Executive Vice President/CFO of CP Rochester in 2013, Patti is credited with transforming its financial
standing by moving the agency from a $2 million operating deficit to an operating surplus of $1 million. She expanded
funding resources at Happiness House and also served on its capital campaign committee, helping the agency to reach its goal of $1.5 million.
Patti was the lead financial resource on the synergy committee of both agencies, which developed a parent corporation called Ability Partners Inc. last December; CP
Rochester and Happiness House are now both subsidiaries. In addition, she secured $3 million in financing for the construction of a service facility in Canandaigua
for Happiness House, a project she especially enjoyed because she could wear a different hat.
While it is her job to oversee the financial management of the agencies, she never loses sight of the ultimate goal of her work: to serve people. “Accounting can be
done anywhere; why not do it where I can make an impact?”
