SZMIDT PHOTO: THE LESZNO-REGION TOURIST ORGANIZATION ARCHIVE The Polish Federation of Camping and Caravanning (PFCC), a social organization for tourists and campsite owners, involves itself in promoting the idea of camping. For example, the Federation aims to raise the quality of service and the standards of equipment through the "Mister Camping" contest. It also cooperates with camping clubs and organizes rallies of campers and caravanners, both Polish and foreign. Camping enthusiasts who want to get a discount and be sure that they get a place at a chosen campsite can obtain the FICC Camping Pass from the Polish Federation. It is issued by the International Federation of Camping and Caravanning (FICC) based in Brussels, and distributed by national organizations. Find out more at www.pfcc.eu. PHOTO: Z. SZMIDT We would like to invite you to the best campsites in Wielkopolska. It is worth noting that campsites are fenced areas with a reception service, allowing you to stay in tents, caravans, trailers, motor-homes or in chalets. Campsites are equipped with sanitary kitchen and leisure facilities. The current categorization of campsites differentiates them distinctly from hotels and tent sites, and campsites scoring four stars can boast the highest quality of service. PHOTO: Z. SZMIDT It is summer at last. A season of holidays and days off work. Caravanning for a rest, we go to destinations with water and forests. And the Region of Wielkopolska (Greater Poland) is perfect for this. Its prehistoric glacier has left some moraine hills which have been cut through by ancient river valleys and stretches of lakes. It is here that the largest holiday resorts have emerged. But not all of us enjoy our holidays in the hustle and bustle of tourist resorts. More and more of us prefer quieter and calmer places, such as campsites. The advantages of camping are more moderate prices and, most notably, its proximity to nature. Staying at a campsite also gives us the chance to keep active, as there are many sailing and canoeing centres. The closeness of woods encourages taking walks along tourist trails and mushrooming. And the vibrant folk culture of some areas of Wielkopolska enables taking part in folk festivities and regional celebrations. Traditionally, our campsites are visited by foreign tourists, which allows them to get to know our culture, historical monuments and curiosities of nature. PHOTO: Z. Also worth a visit is the former Gothic Observantine Church of Our Lady of the Angels. PHOTO: Z. SZMIDT Poznań The campsite is located at Margonin Lake (215ha), in a holiday complex 700m away from the town centre. It neighbours the "Margonin" Hotel and a sports field. In Margonin, near the Old Market, there is an interesting baroque Church (St. Adalbert’s), which dates from the 18th c. On the way to Gołańcz, you can see a former estate called Margonińska Wieś with its neo-Gothic palace dating from the middle of the 19th c. It is famous for hosting Józef Wybicki, the author of the Polish national anthem. Nowadays it houses the Witold Łuczkiewicz Forest Centre. In the palace, there is the Józef Wybicki Remembrance Room and a mini museum, which was the Tradition's Room of the former Wojczyński Forest Schools. On both sides of the road there is the most impressive tree avenue in Wielkopolska. Planted in 1765, it is 1.5km long and made up of huge lime trees reaching up to 620cm in circumference. PHOTO: Z. It is famous for its baroque Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary from the middle 18th c. with its miraculous painting inside, and also being a place of many pilgrimages. The village also houses a classical palace located in an enormous scenic park – well worth seeing. PHOTO: Z. SZMIDT PHOTO: Z. SZMIDT The church in Lubasz The surroundings of Lubasz feature a diverse landscape sometimes called the Czarnków Switzerland. The edge of the valley falling steeply towards the Noteć River cut by ravines and gorges brings into sight many picturesque views. Plenty of charm characterizes the hills of nearby Goraj's and its surroundings, wooded with beech and oak. It is also the location of a neo-Renaissance castle of the Hochbergs from the early 19th c., which is currently housing the Forest Schools Complex (Zespół Szkół Leśnych). The nearby town of Czarnków, located on the slopes of moraine hills and in the Noteć River valley, is among the most beautifully situated towns in Wielkopolska. The Góra Krzyżowa Mountain overlooking the town gives you the opportunity to admire the vast panorama of the town and valley. The most precious monument of Czarnków is a Gothic Church of Mary Magdalene from the 16th c. with gilder paintings and the Czarnkowski family gravestones. 120 50 [email protected] www.gowigk.cil.pl 64-720 Lubasz, ul. It is said that Gallus Anonymus, the first Polish chronicler, was an abbot there. The neighbouring Cichowo has become a charming open-air film museum since Soplica's manor was moved there from the film set of "Pan Tadeusz", the adaptation of the Polish national epic by Adam Mickiewicz. On the way to Cichowo, you can try driving an old trolley-car on a closed railway line in Bieżyń. PHOTO: Z. SZMIDT Poznań Wonieskie Lake, almost 13km in length and surrounded by woods, is a venue for attractive walking and biking trails. The lake was created between 1974 and 1983 by damming up a small river called Samica Osieczyńska, flowing through 5 lakes. Nearby, in the Gryżyna village there are ruins of the Gothic Church of St. Martin from the 13th c. It is a defensive construction with walls of fieldstones. Not far away are the manors and palaces of Turew, Choryń and Kopaszewo, the latter being where Adam Mickiewicz (one of the greatest Polish poets) stayed in Wielkopolska. The palace in Racot, owned in the past by William, Prince of Orange, later the King of the Netherlands , was a residence of the President of the Republic of Poland in the inter-war period . It houses an exhibition of historical interiors as well as a collection of ancient Greek vessels - the so called Gołuchów vases. Around the castle and along the Ciemna River there is the largest arboretum in Poland, 162 hectares in size, with domestic and foreign trees. Among them there are a dozen unique specimens and a few hundred other types trees. The park is looked after by the Forest Culture Centre (Ośrodek Kultury Leśnej), which is a special unit of the State Forest’s national range. In its centre there is a nice town hall with a rooster at the top, which is the symbol of the town. At noon you can hear the cock crowing and the bugle call of Kórnik. Attractions of Kórnik are widely known and they are worth devoting some time to. At the market square there is the so called Eye of the Needle (Igielne ucho), which is a passageway leading to a Jewish synagogue ruined during World War II. From the campsite you can go by the "Anna Maria” ship to the castle on the other side of the lake. The neo-Gothic castle houses a museum with rich collections, as well as the Polish Academy of Sciences Library in Kórnik, and is surrounded by an arboretum of the Institute of Dendrology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN). The ship's marina is next to a large car park on the so called Prowent (a former manor farm) where the Polish poet Wisława Szymborska (a Nobel laureate) was born, and there is a plaque on a building there informing us of this. SZMIDT Because the campsite is near Poznań, it is a good base for sightseeing trips to the city. One way of getting to know the city is by walking the increasingly popular Kings and Emperors Route (Trakt Królewsko-Cesarski). It leads from the royal residence of the former kings Mieszko I and Bolesław Chrobry on the Ostrów Tumski island through the Góra Przemysła hill with the royal castle. Poznań was also visited by the Emperor Otto III, the current patron of united Europe, on his way to the famous Congress of Gniezno in 1000ad. Another emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte, stayed four times in the former Jesuit College. For the German emperor William II a monumental castle was built which currently houses the "Zamek" Cultural Centre. On the basis of the cultural values of the city, the route touches upon four themes: history, monuments of architecture, culture and the tradition of Wielkopolska, underlining their uniqueness across Poland. It is impossible to cover the whole Route during one day as it encompasses over 60 attractions. PHOTO: Z. It is located just outside Boguszyn village between Książ Wielkopolski and Nowe Miasto nad Wartą. It is situated in open country among farmland. The Campsite is administrated by a Dutch family. In the village, there survives the manor complex of the Sczaniecki family from the mid 19th c., relating to the romantic neo-Gothic style. PHOTO: Z. SZMIDT If you would like to go for a longer walk, then go to the Warta River which flows here in a vast valley with numerous bends and old river beds. Nearby Książ Wielkopolski is a small town famous for the battle of the scythebearing peasant recruits (kosynierzy) during the Springtime of Nations of 1848. There are two mounds burying the bodies of the insurrectionists. Going in the opposite direction you will get to Chocicza, with an impressive eclectic palace from the early 20th c. Going a bit further you will reach Nowe Miasto nad Wartą, a small charming town with a Gothic Church of the Holy Trinity with valuable Renaissance polychrome. Just outside Nowe Miasto is the Herman's Horse Farm (Folwark Konny Hermanów) offering horseback riding courses. PHOTO: Z. SZMIDT Poznań 63-041 Boguszyn, ul. SZMIDT The church in Tarnowo Pałuckie The most important advantage of the town is its location in the vicinity of 3 lakes: the Durowskie, Kobyleckie and Rygielskie lakes. This means it’s perfect for leisure and water sports. It is the seat of the "Wielspin" Rehabilitation and Leisure Centre for the Disabled, which is one of the most modern centres in Europe. A huge tourist attraction is the unique cross of two rivers, the Wełna and Nielba, and is one of a kind in Europe. Wągrowiec boasts important monuments: the Gothic Parish Church of St. James, from the 16th c, with an untypical(unusual) bell tower and a former, baroque Cistercian Monastery of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The seat of the Regional Museum is Opatówka, the former seat of Cistercian abbots. In the close vicinity of Wągrowiec there are numerous important monuments: in Tarnowo Pałuckie there is the wooden Church of St. Nicholas with Renaissance polychrome, recognized as the oldest in Poland. A bit further, near Łekno, the remains of the oldest Cistercian abbey in Poland, founded in 1153, have been discovered. On the way to Gniezno, on a wooded hill, there is a curious stone tomb in the shape of a pyramid, housing Franciszek Łakiński, who was a cavalry captain in Napoleon's army. Further on, in Budziejewko, there is one of the largest glacial rock in Poland, called the Stone of St. Adalbert measuring 20.5m in circumference. 20 5 [email protected] www.turysta.org 62-100 Wągrowiec, ul. Currently, the former Catholic People's School (Katolicka Szkoła Ludowa) houses the Regional Museum of the Children of Września. Next to the Museum there is the Gothic Parish Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and St. Stanislaw from the mid 15th c. with baroque interiors. The Market Square in Września is also charming with its historical tenement houses and its neoGothic Town Hall. There is also a place commemorated to the burning of four women in 1720 for doing magic. Next to the campsite you can also see another town monument - the wooden Church of the Holy Cross from the 17th c. PHOTO: Z. SZMIDT The neighbourhood of the town abounds in interesting monuments which you can see during short trips. Especially interesting is the huge fortification in Grzybowo dating back to the early 10th c. It is the venue of the International Rally of Slavic Warriors (Międzynarodowy Zjazd Wojowników Słowiańskich) which involves fight shows and presentations of craft. Also in Grzybowo there is an untypical cemetery chapel mirroring the early Romanesque Chapel of St. Felix and Adauctus, which is built on the Wawel hill in Cracow. Other attractions can be found in Czerniejewo and Miłosław, which boast impressive palaces in vast parks. PHOTO: Z. SZMIDT Poznań The campsite is situated on the Lipówka artificial lake (22ha), created on the small river Wrześnica. At the lake there is a beach, a restaurant and recreational area. The campsite is part of the Września Sports and Recreation Facilities. They also encompass the nearby complex of swimming pools and the amphitheatre in the Park of the Children of Września (Park Dzieci Wrzesińskich). PHOTO: Z. SZMIDT \ \ \ 62-300 Września ul.
