Royal Academy of Dance supporters up and
down New Zealand have worked incredibly hard
to ensure that the Genée experience will be a
wonderful one for everyone. We are immensely
appreciative of the support – and proud to be
part of an organisation with such a positive,
can-do attitude. Corporate sponsorship is almost
impossible to come by, but membership support
has more than made up for it. Support from other
organisations too has been most appreciated. It
remains now for us to welcome our many visitors.
Come and enjoy!

Genée Dance Challenge
Six Genée Dance Challenges have been held over the past few
months. Thanks so much to the local organisers who have spent a
huge amount of time and energy ensuring that these events have
run smoothly, have given many students a great experience, and
in all cases have become significant fundraisers for the Genée.
We look forward to seeing the regional winners on the St James
Theatre stage on 14 December, for the final of this event. Pictured
are candidates waiting to dance at the regional challenge in
Wellington on 28 October.

The Auckland/Northland region has been very busy over the last few months with exam sessions, Grades
1–3 Teachers Courses and our area’s Genée Dance Challenges. For the GDC, our region was split
into two areas – Northland/North Shore/West Auckland and Central/East Auckland. Classes, rehearsals
and the competition itself were held on the weekend of 22 & 23 September at Takapuna Grammar
School, which kindly allowed their Performing Arts Centre to be used. Adjudicators were Carl Myers and
Rosemary Martin, and Guest Teacher was Valerie Murray QSM.

The main GDC organiser, Christine Snowball of Devonport School of Dance, was assisted by teacher
Kezia Kramer and Area Organiser Deborah Morrison. Pupils and parents associated with Devonport
School of Dance helped in many ways – directing traffic, working as CD operators, making an enormous
number of sandwiches, muffins and cakes for sale on the day, manning the kitchen and generally helping
out where ever they could. Andrea L’Amie of MEBA donated supplies which allowed Iced Tea to be
sold at a wonderful profit. Christine’s daughter Kim very kindly created an advertising flyer and signs
which were used on the day, as well as designing and printing the programme which was available for
a donation. Goods kindly donated by The Dancer’s Wardrobe, Remuera and Pure Dance, Auckland
City, allowed two raffles to be run on the day of the Competition. The grand total raised at the GDC was
over $5,000. Well done and thank you so much to all who assisted in making the Auckland GDC such a
successful event.

Auckland’s October Grades 1-3 course was
tutored by Melbourne’s Julie Fleming. Julie
also filled in at the last minute for the July
course when the scheduled tutor was unable
to do so. Around 30 teachers attended each
course and all are most grateful to Julie for the
enthusiasm, knowledge and energy she brought
to both courses. Kristin Orr expressed it this
way: “What a pocket rocket gold nugget Julie
is!! I just loved every minute of the recent RAD
new grades training days. Three glorious day of teaching the new syllabus but so much more than
that, the precious gems of imagery, wee words of wisdom, science of technique revisited and energy
unparalleled by anyone else I have ever met.” In the photo above, Valerie Lissette, Julie Fleming and
Pauline Germon enjoy the new work. Photo: Sharon Barber.

has been selected as a finalist for the Genée
Dance Challenge in Wellington in December.
Well done Riki.

RAD new Grade 1–3 syllabus course, and
can’t wait to teach the new work. She says:
“We are currently leading up to our production
of Once Upon a Dance – a production based
on Fairytales and Nursery Rhymes, as well as
a new piece choreographed by Peter Boyes,
Night Shadow set to Vincenzo Bellini’s music
suite of the same name. The students have
really enjoyed learning the piece, and can’t
wait to perform it, on November 23 & 24 at
Hamilton’s Founders Theatre.”

Theatre student Vida
Polakov, pictured left,
(14yrs) has had an
exciting year, taking

the Solo Seal exam
candidates. In August Vida successfully
auditioned for 4 full-time training schools in
Australia and has accepted the offer to study
at the Tanya Pearson Coaching Academy in
2013. Her last performance with THBT will be in
their Thames concert on17 November in Vespri

In August I was honoured to be asked to
“cut the ribbon” to officially open the new
Dance Institute Studio for Shireen and Elton
Breebaart. It was great to see such a large
group of past and present pupils and parents
enjoying a barbecue lunch and showing their
support. One of Shireen’s first pupils, Amanda
Sharp, was doing her Grade 8 exam this year
so I thought it was only fitting that she should
present the bouquet of flowers on behalf of
the RAD.

Anne Samson reports: “I had the pleasure
of travelling to see former student Danielle
Duchesne graduate at Ottawa School of
Dance in Canada. They performed a piece
called “Jo” – all wearing raincoats, hats
and boots. No music, just the sounds of
movement. Totally inspiring! Danielle leaves
for London to further her dance career.”
Leanne Short and Karen McNaughton from
Taupo have had 3 girls (Tori Henson, India
Stickland and Lizzie Attwood) nominated for
NZAMD Scholarship to be held on 10 November
in Wellington.
The new Grade 1–3 syllabus course in
Tauranga was tutored by Carole Speirs.
12 teachers attended, including one from
Australia. Anne Samson commented “The new
graded work seminar was very uplifting. We
teachers leapt, rolled, became very creative
and thoroughly enjoyed Carole’s expertise in
conducting this seminar. I cannot wait to pass
this knowledge on to my students.” This was
the overall feeling of all. Exciting!! Thankyou,
Carole. You made a lot of work fun with your
very special talent for tutoring. Dale Boddy
also commented on the Auckland course taken
by Julie Fleming – “What a delight she is. I had
previously looked at the work and thought “I
will never do it.” But now I am seeing it as a
challenge.”

Wellington
The focus in Wellington this year has been on fundraising events in the lead-up to the Genée
International Ballet Competition.
July was a particularly busy month, starting with a wonderfully enjoyable quiz night in which participants
not only displayed their considerable knowledge but also their prowess at creating tutus and tiaras.

REGIONAL FOCUS
Quiz night organisers and helpers: Mary Rodgers, Sir Jon Trimmer, Sue Nicholls, Davinia Dearmer, Caroline SteeleRumbal, Shannon Dawson and Greer Robertson (absent).
A number of students were fortunate to share in Christopher Hampson’s expertise as he gave a
master class to students at Advanced level. Students and audience alike appreciated this occasion.
Julie Fleming was delighted to catch up with Christopher and
with former student Loughlan Prior, now in the RNZB, while
she was in Wellington tutoring the G1–3 Course
14
Christopher was also very
generous with his time in
presenting a fascinating
insight into his journey from a
young student to his present
position as Artistic Director
with the Scottish Ballet.

To cap off July’s busy month of Genée Fundraising, a movie fundraiser was held at the Embassy
Theatre. First Position was a very popular choice of film. The IDTA was most generous in their
support of this fundraiser, with Eileen Frost, New Zealand Area Administrator of the IDTA donating
over a hundred beautiful ‘diamonds’ which had been produced for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
They were sent to NZ specially to assist the Genée fundraising efforts. All adults who attended the
film received one of these very special mementos, while children received a lolly bag. Shown above
with Eileen Frost (left) are Deirdre Tarrant, Chair of the Genée Steering Committee, and Fiona
Arbuckle who has co-ordinated the Genée fundraising for the RAD.
A number of the 14+ Dance Scholarship Founder

celebratory High Tea at Hippopotamus the day before
the 14+ Dance Scholarship. Deirdre Tarrant,
Doris Gilbertson, Janet Taylor, Amanda Miles, Robyn
Charlton-Kelly, Anne Rowse, Clare Gilbertson, and
Suzanne Snively enjoy the occasion.

Louise Hawke reports that she has re-named her studio ‘Academy of Ballet Arts’. The success of Louise’s
Up-Close & Classical company over the past ten years has, through the appreciation of the company’s
sponsor, enabled Louise, as Director of the Academy of Ballet Arts, to become a $5000 sponsor of the
Genée International Ballet Competition. She passes on best wishes to Janet and the Team!
Millie-rose Bourke, Eloise Calder, Claire Graham and Ai Ito wait for their
Intermediate exam in Wellington.
Louise writes: “A big shout out for Helen Calman for her insightful
and enthusiastic introduction to the new Intermediate Foundation

Otago
The Otago dance community is still coming to terms with the loss of Jennie Kjelgaard from our dance
scene. An inspirational teacher, colleague and friend to many, Jennie will be sorely missed in many circles.
Eight teachers from Southland and Otago completed three energetic days learning the new G1–3
syllabi from tutor Karen Macleod. It was a lot of fun with plenty of laughs and a few rediscovered
muscles! As always the enthusiasm and attention to detail provided by Karen was first rate.

In June, Dunedin teacher, Robyn Sinclair travelled to the UK and Europe, primarily to attend the
Royal Ballet School graduation ceremony of her former pupil, Jordan Mullin. When approached for
an item about her trip, Robyn was busy rehearsing the musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor
Dreamcoat, (as well as preparing for the G1–3 course in Dunedin). She did, however, manage to
pen these few words and sent the accompanying photos.

I had an amazing trip, so much packed into 29 days! Theatre, art, history ...where to start??
Highlights would have to be seeing the Paris Opera Ballet at the Palais Garnier & Alvin Ailey
Dance Company. The 6 day course in Prague was refreshing – so many different cultures
performing & taking class. I also enjoyed a fabulous afternoon at White Lodge.
The Royal Ballet school graduation performances in London were such a special occasion
and it was lovely to see Jordan Mullin dancing at the Royal Opera House [she is now
dancing with Staatsballet Berlin & loving it]. I felt so proud of her and all her hard work – but
more than anything I was so happy that she remains the same down to earth young dancer
that I remember when she left NZ. Catching up with former student Clara Madden was
a treat also. Clara is now a PA working for Their Royal Highness’ Harry, William & Kate.
Although all these things were so special, it was also just lovely to take time out & enjoy life.

From 1 to 6 July 2012 another successful Dance your Southern Sox Off
was held in Invercargill. The RAD tutors this year were Bronwyn Bennett
and Deirdre Tarrant. We also had the pleasure of having Marc Cassidy, son
of Marilyn & Bruce Cassidy from Clyde, tutoring. Marc is a former Genée
International Gold Medallist and Australian Ballet Soloist. He has now retired
from the Australian Ballet but remains involved with the Australian Ballet
School. Marc is an inspiration to dancers, proving that you need not come
from the large centers to have a successful career in Dance. There were 180
dancers and 11 tutors in eleven venues having a great time. They are now no
doubt eagerly waiting for the next Dance your Southern Sox Off.
This year’s Vocational Examiner was Izumi Kimura. She enjoyed a little farming
experience on her day off in Invercargill.

OBITUARY
Tributes to Jennie Kjelgaard FRAD (1923–2012)
She just made you want to get up and dance!!
Jennie Rodham Kjelgaard, much loved RAD teacher, examiner, and
friend and mentor to many, passed away at her home in Wanaka on 28
August 2012, in her 90th year. Born in Sunderland, England in 1923, Jennie came to New Zealand as
a war bride on a troop ship, after marrying New Zealand air force officer
Jack Herron in 1945. Throughout her childhood she had pursued her
dancing dream, and she continued to train here under Peggy Holmes
in Christchurch, and later under Jeane Horne in Wellington. She
toured New Zealand with Ballet Rambert, and started a ballet school in
Oamaru. After passing her advanced teaching exam at the age of 34,
she devoted herself to teaching and examining for the next 40 years.
She and RAD pianist Eli Gray-Smith enjoyed a wonderful friendship as
they embarked on examining tours throughout New Zealand. In 1976
Jennie was invited to become a guest teacher in Japan, for Tokyo Ballet Company owner Saskai San.
She continued teaching in Japan for two months each year for the next 33 years, during which time she
embraced Japanese culture, and learned to speak Japanese.
Jennie is remembered with much love by people throughout New Zealand, and by many further afield, as
a wonderful teacher, examiner and mentor. She is one of only two people in New Zealand who have been
awarded the prestigious ‘FRAD’ (Fellow of the RAD). The first was Jeane Horne.
Many people have sent messages relating how much Jennie touched their lives, and what a vivacious
and inspiring person she was.
Some of the comments received are:
• She was just a gorgeous lady and I remember being very inspired by her as a young dancer
• Many memories of her vivacious and always inspiring tuition and assistance will remain for all who
knew and loved her so very much
• She gave the most incredible classes and was so bright and engaging. She just made you want to get
up and dance!!
• Wow what a great lady and inspiration she was for the Academy and those she touched.
• She was such a lovely warm, bubbly and giving person, very generous with her great knowledge,
highly empathetic of other people’s circumstances and respectful and considerate of others’ opinions
and feelings.
• A full and rich life, well lived. She will indeed be missed.
20
• She was such an incredible source of energy and inspiration.
• She shared her ideas and wisdom with such grace and joy. She truly had a passion not only for dance
but for teaching and learning. Sadly, one son died in a mountaineering accident in South America in 1976. She is survived by her two
remaining children, 7 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Karen Macleod pays Tribute to Jennie
Ballet studios of the 1960’s were not the studios we have today. Stark walls (no posters, though maybe
the odd framed and faded Swan Lake picture on the wall); uneven wooden floors (no “dance” floors);
often very cold (maybe a single gas heater but certainly no central heating or air conditioning); the “sound”
system was often an old piano or, if fortunate, a reel-to-reel tape recorder with large spools of tape which
were knotted because the tape had broken. This was my recollection of the surroundings in which I learnt
and yet for me it was the most magical place.
My teacher was Jennie Kjelgaard. Jennie was no frustrated ballerina teaching others to dance. Jennie,
despite her own very obvious artistic abilities was a woman who loved ballet and wanted to share this
passion with her pupils. Our classes were energetic. Jennie worked us hard but every pupil in the class
was carried and buoyed by her relentless enthusiasm. She had pet names for us and would welcome the
junior classes in the door with a big smile and “Come on in my little sausages!” Despite the hard work, we
all knew that she loved life, she loved dance and she loved us.
For me her classes were almost surreal. She had the ability to take a child from everyday life and convey
her to a very special place. At five years of age I would get the trolley bus, unaccompanied, to the centre
of town, so excited about the forthcoming lesson and I was never disappointed. Jennie was able to
make the mundane things exciting. We laughed a lot in our classes but those classes were always well
planned. I have some of Jennie’s lesson plans written in her rounded script, with careful notes about the
music in the margin. There was a wonderful freedom about Jennie’s classes but she was always very well
prepared.
Jennie was highly esteemed in her role as Grades and Major (as they were called then) examiner. She
travelled extensively as an examiner and tutor but never lost her sense of reality. She could always laugh
at herself and she was a compassionate woman with a strong sense of justice and fairness.
Technology is now a very real part of the ballet world and times have changed but I could not imagine
being taught with more passion or love than by Jennie Kjelgaard. I feel very privileged.

Certificate in Ballet Teaching Studies
Intensive Study Programme
It was a long hard ten days of study, but there was no doubt that student teachers learnt a lot in the newly
designed CBTS 403 Intensive Study Seminar. Tutored by Sue Nicholls and assisted by Sue Alexander
at the piano, student teachers, analyzed, devised, performed, taught and questioned their way from PrePrimary in Dance through to Grade 8 and Intermediate, covering ballet, free movement and character.
Being at the New Zealand School of Dance meant that they were able to watch the end of term Insight
Studio Performances, question Area Organiser Sue Tuck on ‘exam’ day procedures, and get an overview
with Practical Teaching Supervisor Christine Gunn. Denice Devine from the Dancers’ Wardrobe and her
assistant Sam, very kindly offered to fly to Wellington to give a presentation of pointe shoe variety, fitting
and accessories. Denice has provided this insight to students over the years of the ISP being held in
Auckland, so for her to come to Wellington for the day was very much appreciated.

Paula Doole encourages ‘mature’ would-be dancers to get on and ‘do it’
Photo: Paula Doole
I’ve been teaching ballet in the Middle East for 8 years now to a range of ages,
nationalities and abilities. Having studied with the RAD since I was 5, it was
natural to use their syllabus while teaching the art of ballet to them. That was how
I came to teach myself the RAD syllabus from Pre-Primary through to Grade 8
and Advanced.
While teaching Grades 6 through to 8 to students, I was often found to comment
how much I enjoyed the work. One of my students suggested I sit the exam for
the higher levels. Actually we joked about sitting them all again so we could get
the new RAD medals! When she reached grade 8 and started preparing for her
exam I decided I would give it a go, starting with grade 6. When I came through
the grades (it was so long ago), grade 6, 7, and 8 did not exist. Instead we had
D.E.S level 1, 2 and 3 in classical and character.
OTHER DANCE NEWS
Well, Why not?
Paula observed that once she had made the decision, the biggest challenge was timing – organizing to
have an examination while she was on a 9-week ‘summer break’ in New Zealand – and getting a teacher
to enter her in to the exam. Based in Opunake, she was fortunate that Claire Patten and her assistant
Sandra, were happy to take her on. She continues:
The worst part of the lesson was getting into a leotard in cold weather, it’s a balmy 50 degrees where I
currently reside and classrooms are kept at 22 degrees. Thankfully all else went well and the main problem
was remembering everything. I was never very good at it when I was younger and the added age hasn’t
helped at all! Lessons were fun. It was nice to be on the receiving end of training again. I worked hard and
with Sandra’s help felt ready for the exam. Then a few weeks out from the exam, I suddenly had a dance
partner. I was actually quite relieved even though I had to learn opposite sides for partner work, as it meant I
had a ‘friend’ in the exam room with me. I really had to stop and think before starting some exercises.
Coming back as a ‘mature’ student was very different. I was so much more self-assured and relaxed. On
the day of the exam, the nerves were there but they weren’t overwhelming. Surprisingly, I didn’t have the
need to pee every 5 minutes. My partner and I were primed and preened and warmed up. It was time! My
first reaction in the exam room was to notice the young age of the examiner. When coming through as a
youth the examiners were always so ‘wisened’!
After the pliés I felt myself relax a little and started to enjoy the exam. Then before I knew it, it was time to
leave. Exam over. I came out feeling relieved I got through without any major mistakes or gaffs, very selffulfilled at having put myself out there and giving ‘it’ a go, as well as feeling a little sad it was all over.
Now What? Well I guess I’m all set for Grade 7 and when I tell people, friends included, that I’m sitting a
ballet exam and they say to me, ‘why would you want to do that?’ I will reply my now standard reply, ‘well,
why not?’
I’d like to say a huge thank you to Claire and Sandra for taking a risk, to Janet at RAD for putting up with
my endless emails and questions and to my husband and three children and dance students for believing
and supporting me in ballet.
My advice for any ‘mature’ dancers out there who have any regrets about not doing an exam, or would
just like to dance again. Do it. All it takes is a little perseverance, a thick skin, a love of ballet; and…..
‘Well, why not?’

NEWS FROM THE UK
Kerry Rubie, Anne Hogan, Mayor of Wandsworth Adrian Knowles, Julia Farron
and Luke Rittner at Awards Day Photo: Tempest Photography
Awards Day
The annual RAD Awards ceremony took place on 11 July at St Mary’s Church, Battersea. The graduation
was an international celebration with over 179 students and guests travelling from 32 countries to collect
their certificates, from as far afield as Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Hong Kong, New Zealand,
Zimbabwe, Mexico and the USA. The students, who were each graduating from one of the seven Faculty
of Education dance teacher training programmes, will now begin their professional careers all over
the world.
RAD Chief Executive, Luke Rittner, introduced the award categories, which were presented by Director
of Education, Dr Anne Hogan and Chairman, Kerry Rubie. Guest speaker was Julia Farron, OBE, FRAD.
An iconic dancer and teacher, Julia was the youngest student to gain a scholarship to the Vic Wells
Ballet School under Dame Ninette de Valois and went on to enjoy a 25 year career with the Royal Ballet,
creating roles in ballets by Ashton, de Valois, Cranko and McMillan.
The distinguished artist and teacher, who celebrates her 90th birthday this year, offered some
inspirational words of wisdom to the newly qualified dance teachers. ‘How different are things now,’
she said. ‘You have so many courses for both teachers and dancers. I do hope that you will have as
much enjoyment as I had as both dancer and teacher: Let me give you a little advice, given to me by
Dame Ninette De Valois, who said, ‘As you finish a class, leave them laughing!’ She did it, I tried it, and
it worked!’
The President’s Award was presented to Kathleen Burdon, Harriett Croft and Irene Hand, for their
dedication to the service of the RAD over and above the call of duty. With a unanimous vote from the
board of trustees, the Fellowship of the RAD was posthumously awarded to Professor Joan White CBE,
former Director of Education, for outstanding and exceptional service.

EXAMINATIONS – INFORMATION
Examinations Information
Overview
The Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) offers an internationally recognised portfolio of examinations and
assessments which is designed to motivate and encourage students of all ages and levels of ability,
through a systematic measurement of progress and attainment. Examinations are organised and
administered by the RAD Examinations Board.
Students may start with the Pre-School Dance Curriculum, move up through Pre-Primary and Primary
levels and then into eight Graded levels or six Vocational Graded levels. Students may move from the
Graded to the Vocational Graded pathway at an appropriate time, or they may study at both Graded
and Vocational Graded levels simultaneously. Types of assessment include Examination, Class Award,
Presentation Class and Demonstration Class.
RAD examinations provide students with:
• an achievable goal to work towards;
• recognition from the world’s largest ballet examination board;
• qualifications that are fully accredited by the UK regulatory authorities;
• the impetus to achieve their personal best.
The Graded Examinations in Dance syllabus:
• includes our Pre-School Dance Curriculum for candidates from the age of 2½ years;
• includes our innovative new Pre-Primary in Dance and Primary in Dance syllabi for candidates from
the age of 5 years;
• incorporates Ballet, Free Movement and Character.
The Vocational Graded Examinations in Dance syllabus:
• builds on the elements covered in the Graded syllabus;
• is suitable for candidates from the age of 11 years;
• is intended for students who wish to pursue a career in dance;
• includes the prestigious Solo Seal Award, the highest Vocational Graded examination offered by the
RAD, which focuses on solo performance.
30
Information on other examination matters such as worldwide fees, entry procedures, results and
certificates, and uniform requirements are available in the new publication Focus on Exams and in the
Examination Specifications. Specification documentation for Graded examinations and Vocational Graded
examinations and an overarching document called Examinations Information and Rules & Regulations
are now available. Check them out on www.rad.org.uk/examinations. Combined, this documentation
replaces the previous Handbook for Teachers publications.
You can also contact the RAD NZ office via email: [email protected] or tel 04 382 8924.
Target Date for Examination Results
Examination certificates and result forms should reach the teacher within 4 weeks of the end of the
examiner’s tour.
Reduction in Vocational Examination Fees for Members
For those sitting examinations at Advanced Foundation level and higher there is a reduction in exam
fees which more than offsets the cost of the membership fee. The Member Exam Fee is available only to
candidates who are already Members before the exam closing date.
Special Graded Examinations – Minimum 4 hours Examining Time
The closing date for a session requested outside the published dates is 2 months before the start of the
session. The fees are $350 plus $50 per day. Any request for a special examination session should be
sent to the NZ office with a $75 deposit which forms part of the fee.
EXAMINATIONS – INFORMATION
Further Examinations Information
Less than 3 hours’ Graded Examining Time
Teachers who have less than 3 hours examination work may choose to hold their examinations in their
own studios by paying an additional charge on the total fee income from their examination and class
award or presentation class entries to bring it up to the minimum fee of $1596. This surcharge will not
apply if teachers combine with other teachers to ensure a total of more than 3 hours.
Replacement Certificates and Replacement Medals
A charge of $38 will be made to replace any certificates which are incorrect due to mistakes on the
entry form. The same fee will be charged to replace lost certificates. Errors made by the Academy will
be corrected free of charge, but in all instances the original certificate must be returned to the NZ office
before a replacement certificate can be issued. A charge of $15 will be made to replace any medals.
Results Enquiry Service
There are two levels of check for the Results Enquiry Service. The application form (available from
the RAD office or website) is required to be sent to the RAD office within 10 working days of the results
being received.
Level 1: Results Enquiry clerical check. This provides an additional data entry and monitoring check
to ensure that all procedures have been carried out appropriately and marks have been accurately
processed and reported. The fee is $25 per candidate.
Level 2: Result Enquiry Report. This service includes the clerical check and also a detailed Report which
provides the reasoning behind the result given. The fee is $80 per report.
Refund Policy
50% of any examination or presentation class fee will be refunded if a candidate is unable to take the
examination due to illness or if the teacher has to cancel the examination session due to illness. No
refunds will normally be made for withdrawal for any other reason. In the case of sickness a medical
certificate must be enclosed. Both should be given to the Area Organiser or sent to the RAD office within
a week of the conclusion of the examination tour. Alternatively the candidate may be permitted to carry
forward the examination fee for one session. Check details with the RAD office.
Age Requirements
There are two dates of reference by which candidates must have reached the minimum age, depending
on the time of the year of the examination tour. Check out Page 6 of Focus on Exams Issue 2 2012 for the
policy details.

More Genée Fundraising
The following email from RAD teacher Lea
Sandford of Silverdale was received just as
the Focus on Members was going to print. Lea
has kindly agreed that it be included in this
issue. “At last we have all our money in for our
Dance-a-thon, which our dance school held
to raise funds for the Genée Competition. We
are happy to announce that the Lea Sandford
School of Dancing raised $2,466.28. The
students who took part had such fun and
have asked to do it again. Several of the older
students danced for a total of nine and a half
hours of classical ballet class. As the day
progressed the classes became easier as the younger students joined in, ending the day with the 4 year
olds who danced for about an hour. We had a café operating which sold to our students, their parents and
the local community. A raffle was held, there were spot prizes during the day and prizes for the most funds
raised by individual students. Everyone had a marvelous time and we feel it was a most successful day.”
What an amazing result. Many thanks to all involved.
