Welcome to the Wood Lake Publishing
2014-15 Curricula Catalogue
CONTENT OVERVIEW
The one constant in all our lives is change, and this is true for Wood Lake
Publishing too. You may recognize my name from my various positions at
Wood Lake over the last 23 years, but this year I’m writing to you as President
and Publisher.
I would like to take this opportunity to let you know of some of the changes
in our curricula products from past years. As congregations evolve, we
Seasons of the SpiritTM
continue to adapt our products to the changing needs of our customers. The
two curricula products in this catalogue, Seasons of the Spirit, and The Best
of Whole People of God Online, offer numerous product options to meet the
needs of any congregation. For those Seasons of the Spirit customers who’ve asked why there is a
shipping charge for an online product, we are able, for the first time, to offer
the seasonal posters in an online version. Any customer ordering online
Seasons of the Spirit only, will no longer have a shipped component of posters
and/or data disks. And, under the Seasons of the Spirit list of products we are
offering, for the first time, a downloadable bulletin cover to give congregations
another way to appreciate our beautiful Seasons of the Spirit posters.
The Best of Whole People of God Online is also being offered with a
no-shipping option. Customers can choose to receive a package of printed
teaching pictures, or receive the teaching pictures in a downloadable format,
saving on shipping charges and, at a lower price.
We invite you to share this letter with your Christian Education leaders,
clergy, congregation members, church council and board members, or anyone
who may want to know more about Wood Lake Publishing and the curricula
we offer.
Wood Lake Publishing is committed to continuing our over 30-year history
of bringing readers and faith formation practitioners unique and accessible
resources that nurture, inspire, and challenge – essential spirituality for our day.

Season of Creation
When you buy Seasons of the Spirit resources,
you receive 52 weeks of material based on the
Revised Common Lectionary (RCL).
Seasons of the Spirit celebrates the Season of Creation during the
first four weeks of September (Sep 7–Sep 28). Resources for the
Season of Creation are based on scripture texts from the three-year
Season of Creation cycle of readings.
The Season of Creation
The readings for the Season of Creation invite congregations to join with
all members of Earth’s community to “celebrate Earth as a sacred planet
filled with God’s vibrant presence” (from Season of Creation charter).
In 2014, the four Sundays in the Season of Creation focus on Forests,
Land, Wilderness/Outback, and Rivers.
Revised Common Lectionary
resources for the first four weeks of September
Seasons of the Spirit also provides RCL resources for the first four
weeks in September. These resources follow the SeasonsFUSION
format, and weekly session flow. Suggestions are provided to help
SeasonsENCORE users adapt the materials to the needs of their
particular group(s).
RCL resources for the first four weeks of September are only
available online and can be accessed by any Seasons Leader using
PRINT, DISK, or WEB delivery. Instructions for how to access the online
RCL materials are included in the Season of Creation PRINT and DISK
resources, and are automatically included with the WEB resources.

The community of Jesus’ day considered people with leprosy
ritually unclean, outcasts, and likely to be possessed by evil
spirits. They were forbidden to enter the temple, or participate in religious or communal life, unless a priest certified
them as clean. On the final leg of his journey from Galilee
to Jerusalem, Jesus responds to the appeal of ten to have
mercy. All ten refer to Jesus as “Master,” recognizing him
as a healer, and all respond immediately to his command
to show themselves to the priest. As they follow Jesus’ commandment, heading to the temple, they become clean.

Clearly more has happened to the Samaritan than being
healed. Jesus asserts that his faith, his ability to recognize
and rejoice in God’s blessing of healing, makes him a full
member of the faith community. In this way, Luke signals
that the Samaritan’s experience functions as a sign of the
coming of God’s kingdom.
Jeremiah 29:1, 4–7 Long before Luke, the prophet Jeremiah
introduced the notion that God can be worshipped outside the
Holy Land. When the Babylonians forced all the religious and
political leaders into exile, leaving only a few people behind
in Jerusalem, Jeremiah dictates a letter to the exiles. It contains
news the exiles don’t want to hear. God wants them to put
down roots in the land of their captivity, to build houses, plant
gardens, have children. Even more, God wants them to pray
for their conquerors and to seek their welfare.
The theme of God’s universal love continues in Psalm
66:1–12, which invites the whole earth to praise God.
The psalmist invokes the Israelites’ particular liberation
narrative, the Exodus, and the broad embrace of God
“whose eyes keep watch on the nations.” Testifying to
God’s deeds past and present, the psalmist also implies
that communal worship, praise, and blessing leads to
individual thanksgiving and a desire to invite others to join
in worshipping God.
2 Timothy 2:8–15 Timothy is reminded that though
Jesus is an historical person, he is also “the word of God,”
which cannot be chained down. Timothy’s insecurities and
shame are addressed; and he is urged, to explain the word
of truth to his community, and help them avoid useless
“wrangling over words.”

Older children God wants us to see the world as it could be. God has a vision of peace and harmony for places where there
is war, division, and conflict. Think about parts of the world, your community, or even your own life that need some of
God’s peace and harmony. Write a short prayer that asks for God’s help in making the world as it could be according to
God’s vision. Listen to God for ways you might help make peace and harmony a reality.

AGE LEVELS
Adult
Adults enter Bible study from a variety of backgrounds and beliefs. Sessions invite
adults to deepen their spirituality and explore their faith through activities and
articles that encourage a rich engagement with all four of the weekly lectionary
readings. Art images, contemporary writings, and consideration of current issues
offer meaningful ways to link faith and life.
The SeasonsENCORE Adult is a great resource for your next study group!
Ages 15-18
This resource promotes the development of leadership skills and encourages
young people to serve in the local and global ministries of the church. A “Digging
Deeper” section offers groups that enjoy discussion a chance to explore some
themes in greater depth. Leaders will find the Ages 15-18 resource perfect for midweek gatherings, retreats, worship leadership, and outdoor ministry programs.
Ages 12-14
Young teens enjoy self-directed learning. Friendships are important to them and
they are beginning to explore a variety of viewpoints within their community and
the world. The weekly resources provide opportunities to actively explore the Bible
and encourage the development of communication skills. Varied activities meet the
needs of different learning styles, and service projects introduce ways to connect
with the church and the community.
Ages 9-11
These children enjoy making new friends and typically have the confidence to work
in groups. The weekly resources encourage them to use their imaginations and life
experiences as they develop biblical knowledge, ask questions, and explore the
faith traditions of others. Group projects introduce them to issues of justice and
fairness.

Ages 6-8
Weekly resources begin to address the more
abstract thinking skills of children in the early grades
of school. Leaders will find easy-to-use dramas,
stories, and activities that connect with real life
and the eager minds of this enthusiastic group.
Spiritual development is nurtured through ritual and
encouraging relationships with peers and adults.
The SeasonsENCORE Ages 6-8 Poster Set
includes special Story Props posters exclusive to this
age group for each quarter.
Ages 3-5
Children in this age range learn through handson activities and enjoy routines and rituals. Their
developing motor skills are encouraged in the
sessions with songs, fingerplays, group activities,
and simple craft projects. The weekly material uses
interactive storytelling, puppets, drama, and art
images to explore Bible stories.
For each season, the Ages 3-5 Poster Set also
includes special Storytelling Resource posters
exclusive to this age group. And, we provide a free
online Age 3 Supplement, for those leaders with a
group of mostly 3-year-olds!

a leader with a SINGLE GROUP of up to 15 children between the ages of 5 and 12.
The Multiage resource offers different age-appropriate options for engaging with the
biblical stories and provides additional reproducible resource sheets. The Respond
section includes “activity zones” that address different ages, interests, learning
styles, and abilities. For example, children can choose between an Art zone, Music
zone, Outreach zone, or Quiet zone.
This group will also experience storytelling scripts, self-directed learning, and
relationships with children of different ages as they create community, sharing time
and space each week.

Pentecost 1 (4th Quarter)
I find the “Seasons of the Spirit” is a wonderful resource, appropriate for the ages that I
teach in this very small church where sometimes the “five-year-old group” can include
a three year old and also a second grader. Even though my seminary background
makes me hyper-sensitive to the possibility of dumbed-down biblical interpretations
when providing for small children, I always find “Seasons of the Spirit” materials to
be inspirational, appropriate and useful. I have a bright little class, and they are never
under-estimated, and rarely over-burdened. Thanks for your fine product.
A satisfied Seasons user
I love this material! Blessings and continued success in sharing a fine tool for
Christian nurture.
Karen Ziel, Minister of Discipleship Education, CCSG,S. Glastonbury, CT, USA

I love the curriculum… I have an M. Ed and 25 years of 5th grade teaching, and a M Div., ordained
UCC, so I can appreciate both the pedagogical and the theological groundings in your materials.
The UCC Weekly Seeds and Still Speaking tie together the lectionary readings used in worship and
correlate to what happens in Sunday School; pretty much, everyone is on the same page. The art work
is terrific, and the activities enrich learning and appeal to many different learning styles
Linda Harper, Church of the Palms (UCC), Delray Beach, FL, USA
Seasons of the Spirit is so much better than the past material I was using, which was so out of date
and “boring” - if I found it boring, what did I pass across to the children, I wonder?
Robin, State School RE Teacher
We really do like using the online version of Seasons of the Spirit. Teachers feel a lot better
prepared when they can access their curriculum at any time, from their home.
Ian, Uniting Church Minister SA

Easily learned in both
English and Spanish,
this song can be sung
in unison or as a call/
response as indicated.
Non-readers can readily
pick up the words as
there is little change
from verse to verse.
For a variation,
try starting the chorus
softly, building in
volume throughout.

“Samuel,” a voice said. (Fold Samuel up quickly.) Samuel jumped up and ran straight to Eli’s
room.
“You called me, sir, and here I am,” Samuel said to Eli.
Eli replied, “I did not call you. Go back to bed.”
Samuel wondered if he had been dreaming. (Lay Samuel flat.) He lay down again and in no time
at all he was sound asleep.
“Samuel,” a voice said. Samuel sat up and shook his head. (Fold Samuel up.) This time he
was certain Eli had called him by name. He rushed into the room to find Eli asleep. He gently
shook the man’s arm and said, “You called me and here I am.”
Eli replied, “My son, I did not call you. Go back to bed.” Eli wondered what amazing

Samuel returned to his bed, very frustrated. “I know someone called me. I am not imagining

Pastoral Prayers to Share - Years A, B, and C

David Sparks
Each Lectionary Story Bible includes at least
one, but usually two stories from the lections
for each Sunday of the church year, making
it a valuable lectionary resource for Christian
educators, camp leaders, worship leaders, and families who want to share their faith at
home. The books also include a scripture index of the stories for non-lectionary settings
and uses. Year C includes a complete index for all three years.
Lectionary Story Bible Years A, B, and C cover all three years of the
Revised Common Lectionary.
$30.00 EACH | SET YEARS A, B & C $85.00
Just what is pastoral prayer all about? David Sparks explains that, as
pastoral pray-ers, we are about bringing ourselves into right relationship with
God, both as individuals and as a faith community.
Sparks writes his prayers with a view to awakening in us an awareness
of where to use our energy and faith to bring about God’s kingdom on earth.
The prayers are all lectionary-based and responsive and can easily be adapted to particular circumstances and
used in a variety of settings.
Each weekly prayer is divided into four sections: world, suffering, church, and ourselves. Each week offers
two or three specific prayer formats to choose from; the “How to Use” section provides 16 broad variations.
Each book includes a data CD with text files, thematic and scripture indices, and icons in the margin for quick
reference. $29.95 EACH | SET YEARS A, B & C $78.95

Practicing Reverence
An Ethic for Sustainable Earth Communities
Ross L. Smillie
Ideal accompaniment during
the Season of Creation for adult
study groups.
Every day we hear more about how humans are degrading the
environment and causing suffering to themselves and the rest of life.
Where will it end? Practicing Reverence shows that it is up to all of us, in
community, to live in ways that honour not just our own lives, but all life.
Minister, theologian, and environmental ethics teacher Ross Smillie
combines his areas of expertise to document our current situation and, even more
importantly, to offer hope. Smillie’s science background is evident in his extensive factual
reporting of ecological issues. His engagement with theology and ethics balances
scientific fact with moral and ethical ponderings. The result is an up-close view of how
things “are,” and a glimpse of how things “could be.”

Originally conceived over ten years ago by churches in Australia and Europe
as a response to the growing ecological crisis, the Season of Creation invites
congregations to focus their worship and Christian Education activities on God’s
creation. The Season of Creation is now celebrated in many countries around the
world.
Each resource contains all the background information, ideas, and suggestions you need to celebrate the
Season of Creation in your congregation or group.
The scripture texts in these resources are taken from the three-year Season of Creation cycle of readings,
which broadly corresponds to the pattern of the Revised Common Lectionary, with each year centred on one of
the synoptic gospels: Matthew (Year 1), Mark (Year 2), and Luke (Year 3).
These resources can be used in a variety of settings, including Sunday morning worship, adult study groups,
youth and young adult groups, congregational retreats, midweek groups, and more.
