NAMASKAR WILLKOMMEN
Dr. Leopold-Theodor
Heldman
Consul General of the
Federal Republic of
Germany in Mumbai
Prithviraj Chavan
Chief Minister of
Maharashtra
Dear Mumbaikars,
Dear Visitors of the Indo-German
Urban Mela,
It is my privilege to welcome the ‘IndoGerman Urban Mela’ in Maharashtra.
It is with pleasure and pride that I
welcome you to the Cross Maidan
Garden in Mumbai, the financial
and economic centre of India. Our
Urban Mela is a colourful highlight
of “Germany and India 2011 – 2012:
Infinite Opportunities”. With the
thematic focus on “StadtRäume CitySpaces”, the year of Germany in
India presents a large range of activities
in the areas of science, education,
technology and business as well as
the performing and visual arts. All
these elements converge to become
complementary aspects of urban
development and all these aspects are
presented in a set of 15 multi-purpose
pavilions, combining elements of design
from both our countries with modern
textile technology.
‘StadtRäume-CiySpaces’ highlights the
fact that the urban development is one
of the greatest challenges of our time.
Twenty-First Century is going to be an
urban century when majority of the
people in the world would be living in
cities and the cities will drive national
economy.
We are very keen to experience the
joint Indo-German venture to highlight
different aspects of the urban life, focus
on the use of science and technology,
businesses and the role of performing
and visual arts.
On behalf of the Government and
the people of Maharashtra I warmly
welcome all participants and visitors
and wish the organizers all success.
I wish you, the visitors of the IndoGerman Urban Mela from Mumbai, from
other parts of India or from abroad, an
entertaining, interesting and inspiring
experience. May this unique celebration
also be a symbol of the rapidly growing
ties of friendship and cooperation
between Germany and India in the 21st
century.
THE INDO-GERMAN URBAN MELA
Mumbai’s rejuvenated Cross Maidan
Garden offers the perfect backdrop
for the fifteen exquisite multipurpose pavilions that form the much
anticipated Indo-German Urban Mela.
“Germany and India 2011-2012:
Infinite Opportunities”. Central to this
programme is a focus on ‘StadtRäume–
CitySpaces’ and the challenges that
both countries face with areas such as
urban planning, public transportation,
sustainability, education and urban
culture. Programmes and performances
at the Urban Mela will address these
issues in a unique, innovative and
engaging way.
Conceptualised by internationally
renowned German artist Markus
Heinsdorff, the pavilions incorporate
the best of German and Indian
innovation and design. Over ten days,
each pavilion will feature a dynamic
selection of interactive presentations,
conferences and cultural performances
hosted by German corporations and
organisations.
The Indo-German Urban Mela lies
at the core of the continuing year of
celebrations between the two countries,

THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE PAVILIONS
THE YEAR OF GERMANY IN INDIA
The stunning multi-functional pavilions
that form the Indo-German Urban Mela
were conceptualised by renowned
German installation artist, Markus
Heinsdorff. His design combines India’s
rich textile legacy with state of the art
technology.
GERMANY AND INDIA 2011-2012:
INFINITE OPPORTUNITIES
Precious gems and stones together
with traditional Indian shapes and
patterns have provided inspiration for
the layout and colour of the pavilions
with gold, copper, ruby-red and
sapphire-blue all key to the aesthetics
of the structures. Geometric shapes
of varying sizes including hexagons,
decagons, circles and squares were
adopted to create the framework of the
15 pavilions.
The innovative design allows them to
be combined and installed in a variety
of ways to form larger structures,
assisting them to adapt with the local
environment. The largest pavilion is 210
square metres and is made up of three
The Indo-German Urban Mela lies at
the heart of “Germany and India 20112012: Infinite Opportunities”, marking
60 years of diplomatic relations
between the two countries. This is being
celebrated with an exciting and diverse
range of collaborative events in India.
The year of Germany in India reflects
a united vision in the fields of politics,
business, science, culture and
education; serving as a platform to
showcase, reinforce and develop this
historical relationship.

self-supporting hexagonal structures,
just like a honeycomb. The pavilions
take inspiration from traditional
mobile structures like pagodas and
incorporates this with a combination
of Indian techniques, textile technology
and high-tech components from
Germany.
The Indo-German Urban Mela is
symbolic of a “discourse between the
two cultures” with a legacy that will
provide an opportunity for the Indian
public to share the beauty and infinite
functionality of the pavilions for many
years to come.
The collaborative programme highlights
projects that focus on sharing issues
and solutions related to sustainable
urban development in both countries.
The Indo-German Urban Mela will travel
to five cities across India (Mumbai,
Bangalore, Chennai, New Delhi, Pune)
exploring these shared challenges and
opportunities with new audiences.
