November 2012 to celebrate 60 years
of Diplomatic relations between

at Indraprastha Millennium Park next to
Humayun’s Tomb. Nine days of IndoGerman Urban Mela at the nation’s capital,
the climax of the German Year in India,
with a most seductive mix.

globalized world neighbourhood is not only
about geographical closeness any more.
It is about mental closeness, common
values and a similar vision of the future.

The Indo-German Urban Mela lies

renowned German artist Markus
Heinsdorff, the pavilions incorporate
the best of German and Indian
innovation and design. Over nine days,
each pavilion will feature a dynamic

conferences and cultural performances

The picturesque Indraprastha
'Millennium' Park with the historic
Humayun's Tomb as a backdrop serves
as a magnificent venue for the sixteen
exquisite multi-purpose pavilions
that form the much anticipated
Indo-German Urban Mela.
The Indraprastha 'Millennium' Park,
erected on a landfill site, is one of
Delhi's most recent reclaimed city
spaces and a popular retreat for its
citizens. The Indo-German Urban Mela
is proud to be associated with this
green, scenic getaway in the heart of
historic Delhi!

'Germany and India 2011-2012:
Infinite Opportunities'. Central to this
programme is a focus on ‘StadtRäume–
CitySpaces’ and the challenges that
both countries face in areas such as
urban planning, public transportation,
sustainability, education and urban

individuals. Visitors will be guided through an experience

THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE PAVILIONS
THE YEAR OF GERMANY IN INDIA
The stunning multi-functional pavilions
that form the Indo-German Urban Mela
were conceptualized by renowned
German installation artist, Markus
Heinsdorff. His design combines India’s
rich textile legacy with state of the
art technology.
GERMANY AND INDIA 2011-2012:
INFINITE OPPORTUNITIES
Precious gems and stones together
with traditional Indian shapes and
patterns have provided inspiration for
the layout and colour of the pavilions
with gold, copper, ruby-red and
sapphire-blue all key to the aesthetics
of the structures. Geometric shapes of
varying sizes including hexagons,
decagons, circles and squares were
adopted to create the framework of the
16 pavilions.
The innovative design allows them to be
combined and installed in a variety of
ways to form larger structures,
assisting them to adapt with the local
environment. The largest pavilion is 210
square metres and is made up of three

Award winning installation artist
Markus Heinsdorff has developed a
strong relationship with Asian culture
over the last decade. His projects,
installations and exhibitions have
taken him to China, Thailand,
Indonesia, Vietnam, India, Jordan, USA
and many European countries. Most
recently he was invited to China where
he designed pavilions to take part in a
six city tour which culminated in a
finale presentation at the Expo 2010
in Shanghai.

WITNESS TO CHANGE: EXPLORATIONS OF SPACE IN PHOTOGRAPHS,

exhibition brings together photographers from Germany, working on the photoproject ‘A Day in Germany’, and photographers from the photography quarterly PIX
India, who explore and bring to light the diversity of urban city spaces.

Akua Naru
aru is a hip-hop artist whose extensive travels have
given her wisdom and perspective, both of which are evident in
her music. Can is one of the most famous hip-hop-dancers from
Germany with a great variety in style such as hip-hop, house,
popping, locking, ballet and B-boying. Tasek has received much
critical acclaim as a graffiti artist. He feels at home with a variety
of materials and methods such as calligraphy, serigraphy, and of
course the spray can.
