India 2011-2012: Infinite Opportunities”, we invite
you to experience a unique melange of activities
at the Indo-German Urban Mela at

With a thematic focus on “StadtRäume – CitySpaces”, this programme series
across India broaches the implications of rapid urbanisation and challenges
posed by the pace of change in German and Indian cities today. Issues like
mobility, energy, sustainable urban development, architecture, cultural space,
education and urban art are prominently featured, touching genres such as the
performing and visual arts, science, education, technology and business.
The centrepiece of the Year of Germany in India is the Indo-German Urban
Mela, a set of modern multi-purpose pavilions, designed by renowned German
artist Markus Heinsdorff. The pavilions combine state of the art steel and
textile technologies from both countries. The Indo-German Urban Mela will host
interactive presentations by various German corporations and organisations
on topics and solutions related to “StadtRäume – CitySpaces”. A wide-ranging
programme, which includes cultural performances and conferences, will also be
held at the venue. Visitors will also have the opportunity to savour some delicious
German cuisine in the Beergarden.
“Germany and India 2011-2012: Infinite Opportunities” Indiawide celebrations will
continue until early 2013.

Schäl Sick Brass Band
Neither German nor brass band!
April 13, 7.30 pm
April 14, 8.00 pm
The Schäl Sick Brass Band regard themselves as craftsmen carefully taking the pick of the
bunch of various musical traditions that can be found in the multicultural city of Cologne.
Their pack includes tunes from the Balkans, afrobeats, oriental groove, Scandinavian
themes and an extra portion of jazz, their compass being the consistent way of interpreting
traditional elements.
Raimund Kroboth, a great lover of world music and a native Bavarian and educated jazz
guitarist, has assembled a band of international, virtuoso musicians that have two things in
common: flexibility in style and musical daring.
Udo Moll (trumpet), Annette Maye (clarinet), Matti Muche (trombone) and Joachim Gellert
(tuba) form the exquisite blow section. Polish drummer Mirek Pyschny lays the foundation
for unorthodox world music experiments and the boss usually plays the Bohemian waldzither
and occasionally also his Telecaster.

Parada Narrnia
A fairy tale parade. We go to the end of the world to
come back again.
by Grotest Maru
April 14 & April 15, 6.00 pm onwards
The big white bird, the magic gardener, the sad prince,
the unicorn princess and the rest of the forgotten
queen´s court are travellers from a fairy world. They
wake up to share with us tales and pictures from their
universe, which seems to be lost...
Visually impressive stilt figures and quick-moving
ground characters interact with the audience
and invite people into their play. GROTEST MARU
develops new characters and improvisations
corresponding to the location and environment that
surrounds them.

as the background. Some images would be mash-ups from images from
Berlin & Mumbai to create one seamless cityscape image.

based in Mumbai. He is founder of Travel Pixels, a company which
provides complete visual consultation. Aneesh has won several
international awards and honorable mentions (including the PIEA award,

of a winter night.

laLd`frjax
Sanskrutirang / Farben der Kultur
The first-ever book in Marathi discussing intercultural communication with a
special focus on German and Indian business cultures was published in July
2011. The author, Ms. Vaishali Karmarkar, is Intercultural Facilitator at Max
Mueller Bhavan Mumbai with a professional experience for the last 18 years.
“An intercultural Facilitator carries data-sheets of the latest Research in
the field of Intercultural Communication, follows
keenly the slow movement of the cultural iceberg
and facilitates a harmonious cross-cultural
interaction. The knowledge branch, “Intercultural
Communication” empowers the global nomads of
today to summit tough communication peaks in a
multicultural organization” – Vaishali Karmarkar,
Preface “laLd`frjax”
The first eight chapters of “laLd`frjax” attempt to
analyse the genesis of cultural preprogramming of the Indian and German
culture. This analysis enables the readers
to understand the “why” of “short-circuits
in communication” between the Indian and
the German business counterparts.
While understanding the German culture
one is compelled to reflect upon his/her own
cultural upbringing.
A special chapter “From Campus to Company” is a great help to the HR
departments while understanding the different levels of expectations from
the German and the Indian side.
The book concludes with two extensive case-studies. The book is written in
Marathi, plans are underway for translation into German and English.
