Any money clubs or members wish to donate should be clearly marked and sent to the National Office. This money will be distributed to NZCTA members who are registered at 10 March who have been affected by the earthquake. All members affected by the earthquake should register with the National Office by 30th June if they are to receive any benefits from this appeal. Members who are not affected are encouraged to make known to the National Office the names of members who they feel were affected and would benefit from this appeal. The NZCTA is very grateful to the Thames Clay Target Club executive for having the compassion and foresight to programme this event. Thank you to the individual competitors who made cash donations and gave their sweeps to this fund. These people included Don McCarthy, Nola and Wattie Leonard, Stephen Hannah, Owen Hannah, Jim Sharp, Paul Schmidt, Paul Basten, Jackson Corbett, John Tonkin, Dion Harrison, S.Taylor, Ian Marshall, Keith Bayliss, Martin van de Wetering, Den Wilkens, Phil Collins. The NZCTA is grateful to the Thames Clay Target Club for their contribution to the fund. At the DTL Nationals John Waldron from Tokoroa Engineering suggested that the NZCTA President did not want him to wear his gumboots at the presentations. It was proposed that whatever price the President offered him for the gumboots so he would not wear them again, John would match that price with the donation going into the earthquake appeal fund. Dean Everett quickly suggested that the price of those gumboots would be $500, so Keith Livingstone swiftly said consider them sold (to avoid the price going even higher?). So the fund was topped up by an additional $1,000. Tony Truss promptly grabbed one of the gumboots so watch out as it may surface again as some sort of trophy. It would have to be the most expensive gumboot ever. Thank you John, your generosity is very much appreciated. gunshot 5 NATIONAL EXECUTIVE PATRON: George Ellis 30 Mitchell St, Green Island, Dunedin. Firstly two good comments, the Grand Prix, under Rob Curruthers and his band at Wanganui/Rangitikei C.T.C., what a great shoot, 8 old style Par Cours each one different with personal touches from his band of target setters. Thanks to Graeme Brown (Target Products), not only a major sponsor, but drove up from Timaru with a dozen traps to set up 2 fields. The Lalich cousins also bringing a large impressive trailer full of gear down from up North. Gordon MacPhee providing a high lift, set a field with his own traps, plus shooter transport around the fields. That’s not to forget all the other local guys and girls huge effort to bring this shoot to fruition. It was a real team effort and showed. 6 gunshot I especially loved that 80+ metre looper on F4 that sorted out the men from the pretenders!! As many of you may know a group of us in the South Island have started a new Sporting Club, it is a club purposely without a ground, and its main purpose is to promote Sporting Clays in the South Island, both in its own right as any other club, but also to have good hire gear available to other South Island Clubs interested in Sporting and maybe wanting to run bigger shoots, but are hampered by equipment. There are many grounds that we shot years ago and we hope to resurrect them, plus the exciting proposition of shooting “green fields”, so much loved Continues on Page 38 PRESIDENT’S REPORT It is with much pleasure that I present the President’s Annual Report for the year ended December 2010. MEMBERSHIP. Membership is up to a total combined membership of 2579. Full membership makes up 68.7% of our total members, Family 3.5%, Juniors 21.2%, and Social 6.4%. All categories of membership are up on 2009 with the exception of Social which has declined 1.8%, to a total of 166. I would like to remind clubs, as mentioned in previous Gunshot Presidents columns, that your local “matey” members, who are attending your home club on regular occasions, must register in accordance with NZCTA Rules as Social Members. This will solve the problem of reducing membership for Social Category members in the future. The increase in total membership reflects the hard work done by the Club Executives of the NZCTA Clubs of New Zealand, and is greatly appreciated by the NZCTA Executive, in this difficult year of sustained recession. NATIONAL EXECUTIVE. We must all be extremely grateful for the knowledge and expertise that Adrienne is contributing. I cannot speak highly enough concerning her services to our chosen sport, her knowledge, expertise and advice have saved me from embarrassment on a number of occasions. Adrienne has now completed over 20 years’ service to the NZCTA, and I can assure you her loyalty is greatly appreciated by the full membership. A special bond exists between the President, Executive Officer, and the full Executive. This bond leads all elected members to a deep appreciation of the work that each Executive member undertakes in the four different disciplines. We should all be extremely grateful for the family sacrifices and personal time each elected member of your Executive gives so willingly. I would personally like to congratulate them all on the work we have achieved as a team over the past year. This year Martin van de Wetering is retiring from the Executive, I know you all share with me in thanking him for his past immense contribution, and wish him well in his new endeavours. ANNUAL BALANCE SHEET. It is pleasing to report, in these inflationary times, the Association made a net profit in the last year. The Executive is working hard to minimise increased expenses, but we are conscious that the level of service should not be compromised. The Association is not in the business of making money, but acknowledges it is often a difficult balance between delivering what you, the members want and expect, and charging for the running of the organisation. The total assets of the Association have increased overall to a net value of just over $483,000. GUNSHOT The Gunshot magazine is something the Executive is very proud of. The issues of Gunshot now resemble more of a book with issues getting up over 80 pages. The Gunshot could not be produced to the high standard we currently enjoy without a huge input from Adrienne, Tom Begg, the typesetters and printers. Tom Begg puts in his valuable expertise every issue, and has to structure his other personal and family activities around the timing of the issues. He does all this for the love of the sport, and we all appreciate the tremendous work he does for us. Tom has being doing this for us for many years now, and we appreciate the time he gives freely. What is also very pleasing is that with the magazine increasing in size we are still able to show a profit from it. GOVERNANCE / STRATEGIC PLAN / FUTURE POLICY In my acceptance speech last year, I mentioned the Executive should focus on greater Governance, and less on Management issues, being dealt with by the Executive in the future, and the involvement of the full membership being taken into account, via sub-committees, in the future decision making process. This has been achieved by changing Adrienne’s role with a change of designation from National Secretary to Executive Officer. With this change comes greater delegated responsibility in decision making, mainly in Management issues on the day to day running of the NZCTA. Leadership of the Executive in Governance of the sport rests under my umbrella of responsibility, and formulating future policy is a combined effort from the full Executive. Together your Executive has made big inroads into changing to a Governance role; however we still have a long way to go, until we can truly call ourselves a Board of Directors. However, some of the fruits of our labour are now starting to become evident, such as the start of a system to computerise membership records at club level. NZ SHOOTING FEDERATION. The communication within the Shooting Federation has now been streamlined so all communication, both internationally and domestically, is channelled to Gavin Paton as Development Officer of the NZSF. Gavin is now working mainly alone in his role, and only occasionally referring to Tony Weymouth. The new President of the Shooting Federation is David Tomlinson, President of Pistol NZ. Ewen Pirie the immediate past President, has completed a term of nearly 10 years, and has guided the Federation through some very difficult circumstances, such as closing down the Federation’s Ardmore facility. Ewen must be congratulated for the past efforts he has contributed to this very important part of our sport. Future quarterly meetings will now be held in Wellington, and I attend as the NZCTA Delegate, and on occasions it is necessary for other NZCTA Executive members to attend. COMMONWEALTH GAMES / ISSF Four athletes were successful in competing in the 2010 Commonwealth Games held in Delhi, India. Everybody performed with distinction to their personal best level. Although ultimately no medals were won by shotgun shooters, Nadine Stanton and Natalie Rooney competed in the Women’s Trap Final, finishing just outside the medals. Greater experience in international events, and greater coaching opportunities, must be gained if we are to give our athletes greater success in the ISSF disciplines in the future. We could not have asked more of the performance from our Commonwealth Games Athletes, and can be justifiably proud of their performance. The NZCTA is still having difficulties finding venues in the lower North Island for ISSF. Although in 2010 Hutt Valley CTC hosted the South Zone Championships, the future of using this venue remains unclear. Different initiatives have been implemented to entice Transition Athletes from the Domestic Disciplines to try ISSF, and Gavin Searle must be thanked for trying these initiatives. It is still too early to comment on their success. A number of athletes qualified to attend the 2010 World Championships and were assisted monetarily, by a generous sponsorship of $10,000-00 from Perazzi New Zealand. Thank you Brant for that very appreciated sponsorship. gunshot 7 SCHOOL SHOOTING School shooting continues to grow with clay target shooting firmly entrenched in the school curriculum with students being given a choice of what sport they would like to play. It does not get better than that for introducing new entrants to our favourite sport. The school coaches and administrators, including the School Sub-Committee must be congratulated for the major effort they are contributing. Many NZCTA competitors, who have come through the school curriculum, are now successful winners of NZ Championships, which is attributable to the grounding they received initially from the school coaches. Every major school event appears to be growing, with the NZ Championships gaining record entrants at each venue. SPORTING CLAYS When I took over the President’s portfolio, a lot of work had to be done on my part, to build a relationship with the Sporting Sub-Committee, just as I did with other Sub-Committees. I am happy to say that we have now got to know each other very well, and enjoy a friendly relationship, built on trust and camaraderie, with great communication between ourselves. The Sporting Sub-Committee are masters of their own destiny, as they run their discipline themselves, and only need assistance from the NZCTA Executive on matters of policy, funding, and approving venues. The Sporting fraternity are indeed very fortunate to have such a passionate group of administrators in control of their discipline. I have the greatest admiration for the SubCommittees performance over the past year, and I am sure all members have viewed the Sporting Columns in the latest issues of Gunshot. These articles are a result of a great team spirit being very evident within the sub-committee. Although I do not wish to single people out, I must mention the efforts of Rob Carruthers in updating the Sporting portion of the NZCTA Website, and for the record statistics from every event. Thank you from everybody Rob for all your efforts. DTL/AMERICAN SKEET The NZCTA partly funded a number of members to attend the World DTL Championships in South Africa, and members competed in both Teams and Individual events with much success. The Ladies Team won the Gold Medal, and the Ladies number 2 team was 3rd. The NZ Open Team finished 2nd, and Junior and Veterans Teams finished 3rd. In the individual World Event Gavin Paton finished 9th and Natalie Rooney finished 3rd in the Ladies Event. Many Clubs have been lifting 8 gunshot their game, catering for the competitors at NZCTA Matches. 2010 has enjoyed record entries at many events, and club facilities around the country have received massive upgrades. Your Executive is always looking at ways which clubs can improve both the facilities, and their administrative performance, for you the competitor. Prior to the NZ Skeet Nationals comments were made about the small gauge competition not being part of the National Programme .The NZCTA Executive has now amended the Tournament Contract, so that the small gauge competition must form part of the Tournament in future, along with voice release being mandatory also. Please note that future small gauge competitions (28ga and .410 ), will only be held as trophy matches in future, until such stage as the entries warrant a separate National Championship. Dedicated Skeet Shooters are therefore masters of their own destiny, and it is their responsibility to promote these smaller gauge events further at club level. In the Mackintosh Teams Event in 2010, the Ladies and Juniors Team finished 2nd. New Zealand retained both the Glenn Cup and Glenn Trophy in 2010 against Australia. These events are the pinnacle of team shooting and all team members are congratulated for their top performance. SPONSORSHIP Many hours have been spent by Barry Williamson and members of your Executive, obtaining sponsorship. In these times of economic recession this has been no easy task. Barry continues to involve himself in seeking sponsorship on a voluntary basis. All members are indebted to him for his expertise to make it all worthwhile for you, the competitor. We are indeed blessed with having all this sponsorship available to us from our very valued sponsors, and extend our gratitude to all our NZCTA sponsors. To all our main sponsors for the 2010 year, Beretta NZ, Kilwell Sports and Gamebore Ammunition, NZ Fish and Game Council, Champion Ammunition, Gunn Estate Wines, Armusa Ammunition, Stihl Chainsaws and Hull Ammunition, Stager Sport and Blazer Firearms, Perazzi NZ, NZ Dairy Farmers, George Ellis and Graeme Webber, and Merv and Margaret Pratt, thank you from every member of the NZCTA. The Beretta Junior Scholarship, continues to be a major “leg up” for our Junior competitors. It is always very difficult for the selection panel of the NZCTA Executive, to find a recipient to represent Beretta NZ, from the many worthy high calibre applicants. A big thank you to Martyn Coe, Beretta NZ, for this very valued sponsorship. REFEREES/RULES/RANGE CERTIFICATION The new rule books are a culmination of a massive amount of work by Blue Freeman, and approval by the NZCTA Executive. I am sure they will be invaluable as bedtime reading, and lead to better referee decisions being made by our general membership. Blue has been working over the past year on a base of voluntary Official Referees, and it is hoped these officials can be used at major events in the future, and also to ensure that safety factors are not compromised in any way at local clubs. Work continues in this area. The Range Certification Manual has now been completed and forwarded to clubs for their comment and discussion. This document is a living document which means it can be amended at any stage in the future, and the latest amendments will always be on the NZCTA Website. Considerable effort was made by Trevor Manson and Neil Winsloe in compiling the original document, and Gavin Searle and your Executive have produced the mark 2 version. A reminder is given to all clubs that you must all be responsible for the safety factors referred to in the Range Manual. HALL OF FAME Gavin and Bev Searle have now completed the hours of compiling the statistics for the Hall of Fame recipients. The annual evening event draws considerable interest from our members to honour the worthy recipients. Stage 2 of the Hall of Fame is now being entered, where we need a suitable building, to exhibit the memorabilia that has been kindly donated by members, and past members’ families. Should any member wish to donate funds to this worthy cause, we are always open to offers. The cost of an appropriate climate controlled building would not come cheap, but we have to make a start. Thank you to Bev and Gavin and Martin for your continued work in this area. I trust after hearing this report you are satisfied that your elected Executive representatives, as administrators of your sport, have worked tirelessly on your behalf in 2010. I am very proud of their achievements, and the NZCTA Executive look forward to serving you all, to the best of our combined abilities, for the coming year. Now listen up You are all personally forgiven for all the threats, bribes, offers, abuse, innuendo, and practical jokes you have played on me, and thank you for all your support and guidance, especially the Senior Members of the NZCTA, in my first term in office Your President, Keith Livingstone DTL 2011 New zealand CHAMPIONSHIPS Waikato Clay Target Club, 5-12 March 2011 Saturday 5th March was wet, humid and there were flies everywhere. Forgive me if this sounds negative but it really wasn’t like that. The merry bunch of shooters who turned up on the first day of the Nationals to shoot the Ball Trap were there to enjoy themselves, re-acquaint themselves with old shooting mates and shoot a few targets. The club facilities had been meticulously groomed and were a credit to those who had worked so hard. The committee, led by Dean Everett, is always determined to give the shooters an enjoyable time while they are at Hamilton and all credit to them for their efforts. The committee of the Waikato Club has worked tirelessly to bring the facilities up to scratch and create an environment where the shooters can have the best shooting experience possible. As so often happens in clubs there is a small bunch of hard workers who simply get in and get the jobs done, giving up a week of their annual leave to ensure the nationals run smoothly, some don’t even shoot over the week. Their efforts are greatly appreciated by everyone who attends this event. The 50 targets of the Ball Trap got off to a flying start, albeit at 9.30, then a short trap breakdown held things up a bit and one of the early squads was no-where to be seen when it was their turn to shoot. All this lead to a long day in the rain. The numbers competing were encouraging; there were 149 shooters. This compared favourably to the 112 from two years ago. Three shooters shot 49 and Gorge Road shooter Boston Walker won the shoot off to take the HOA title, the silver fern trophy and the Gunn Estate wines. Sunday got off to an earlier start with the Provincial Shoulder to Shoulder team shoot first up, followed by the Opening Ceremony and the Best Dressed competition. There were eight Provincial shoulder to shoulder teams entered. The Bay of Plenty took out the award, only one target ahead of Waikato. The Bay of Plenty team members were; Grant Castles, Mark Walsh, Anja van de Wetering, Brian Hartley and Martin van de Wetering. The best presented competition was, this year, one of the hardest ever to judge. This was because so many provinces had gone to a lot of trouble to present themselves so finely. It is a wonderful sight to see shooters proudly representing their province. This year it was the Southland boys who get to take the wonderful Ray Mack trophy back home. Ewen Pirie, Boston Walker, Lindsay Rodgers, Brad Warnock and Colin Waghorn made up the Southland team. The day had a bit of everything, slight rain in the morning, a bit of wind and a bit of sunshine. The temperature was certainly cooler than we are used to at Waikato but the South Islanders felt right at home. Once the wind got up a bit the Double Rise shooters had to try very hard to get the targets. There were 222 competitors, well up from the 217 last year in Christchurch and the 205 in 2009 when last in Hamilton. Colin Waghorn, ex NZ DTL World Champion, shot the only 48 to take the HOA title. After a shoot off of 20 targets Glen Kable was 2nd and Geoff Wells won 3rd AA Grade. Hamish Bell from Nightcaps travelled up to Waikato for the Skeet Nationals and enjoyed himself so much that he was back for the DTL Nationals. This young person is showing exceptional talent and is just a very By Adrienne Sears nice person. To see him shoot so well is very pleasing. Hamish took out the A grade and the junior title with the only 46, followed by Scott Wilson from Mataura, then Graeme Madgwick from Waihi, both on 45. The South Island shooters dominated the B grade with James Bonney from Dunedin taking 1st on 44 and Brett Gare from Moa Creek taking 3rd with 41. Dannevirke shooter, Mark Johnston won 2nd B Grade with a 43. Neil Berry kindly donated the super veterans trophy. Hugh Bradley from Stager Sports and Blaser was the sponsor for the Minis event. Stager Sports have made a name for themselves in the industry as a supplier of a quality product and the Association is very grateful to Stager Sports/Blaser for their continued support of the championships. There was a most exciting array of trophies that the recipients appreciatively received. Two hundred and twenty three shooters competed, exactly the same number as last year in Christchurch and up from 219 the previous year. Southland shooter Lindsay Rodgers took the HOA title with the possible 25 and after a shoot off of only 30 targets. Lindsay took away the Gunn Estate wine as well as the wonderful trophy that Stager Sports provided. Lindsay and Rob Yeo both shot 24/25 in the first round of the shoot off, and then it was only another five targets that Lindsay shot when Rob missed the 5th one. Keith Zehnder and Les Clarke both shot 11/12 in the first shoot off round. When Les missed his 3rd target in the next round Keith went on to break it and take 2nd place. The Handicap by Distance event was sponsored by Maxam Ammunition. There were 228 entries which compared favourably with the 198 from the last time this was held at Waikato. Craig Pulman is an enthusiastic sponsor of this event and the Association is very grateful to him for his on-going support. The Maxam ammunition was very well received by the winners. Brendan Malcolm was shooting on 21m and shot the possible. Junior shooter Christian Stephen from Fiji shot from 13m and also shot the possible. It was another 25 targets before Brendan took the HOA title, almost $500 in prize money, the Silver Fern and sash, the Gunn Estate wine and the Maxam Ammunition. Well done Brendan, it is not easy to win this event from a back mark. Young Christian Stephen from Fiji was shooting on 13 metres as he has not done very much competition. He went on to take 2nd place and show us that he has a certain natural ability for one so young and inexperienced. The second event of the day was the Kilwell trophy. Kilwell put on a very impressive display on the trophy table and it was Gavin Searle from Canterbury who took the HOA after heading off Gavin Paton (1st A grade), Mark Shaw (2nd) and Craig Fitzgerald (3rd). Jan Manson won the ladies prize after shooting a possible. The cool wind was the topic of much discussion. Certainly the temperatures were down on what everyone is used to during Nationals week at Hamilton. Tuesday’s event was the NZ 18m Triples Championship which is sponsored by the NZ Dairy Farmers. This group of exceptional people are shooters who happen to own dairy farms that choose to put something back into the sport. This type of unselfish attitude has to be highly commended. They are cajoled and gunshot 9 prompted each year by Stuart Bell who organises the fantastic knives to come back from Norfolk Island each year with the NZ shooters who attend the championships there. Thank you Stuart for organising this and thank you to each supporter of this event; Judy Mabey and family, Jim & Margaret Tarrant, Gary & Adrienne Rooney, Grant & Tracey Nilsson, Bill and Denise Dunn, Lindsay Maxwell and family, Trevor & Jan Manson, Ewen Pirie and family, Brian Smith and family, Eion Park, Derek Sheen and family plus Stuart and Carol Bell. Conditions were good for shooting on Tuesday and shooters obliged by squadding in reasonably early. Two hundred and sixty three shooters lined up for this event. This compared favourably with the 260 last year in Christchurch and the 231 in 2009 in Hamilton. There were only six possibles and Dave Turner shot 30 targets clean in the shoot off to take the HOA. Ray Everett and Graham Geater had to shoot off after both shot 73. Graham was only one point ahead of Ray in the 15 target shoot off but this was enough for Graham to take the medal. Neil Berry, a welcome visitor from Australia, won the Super Veterans medal. The second event of the day was the Kilwell Buck Knives North South DTL event. Kilwell have sponsored this event for many years and those who receive the Buck Knives feel very blessed as they are certainly a coveted trophy. It has to be said that it was a clean sweep by the visiting South Island teams. All South Island teams beat their North Island counterparts. I’m not sure if this has ever happened before, especially in the North Island but I can tell you there were some pretty happy shooters from the mainland. The South Island Open team of Gavin Searle, Colin Waghorn, Boston Walker, Daniel Warnock and Lindsay Rodgers shot 369, eight ahead of the North Island team. The South Island ladies team of Jan Manson, Natalie Rooney and Sheryl Anglem were 16 ahead of the North Island team on 215. The Veterans team of Damian Briggs, John Moore and Ray Everett were on 217, 18 ahead of their North Island competition. The Juniors also had a comfortable lead of 13 ahead of the North Island team on 207. The Junior team was William Rooney, Alysha Bell and Hamish Bell. Conditions were perfect for the Single Rise championship on Wednesday. Armusa Ammunition sponsored this event. The NZCTA is very grateful to Rick Stephens and Armusa Ammunition for this sponsorship. All shooters are asked to consider these sponsors when making their purchases. Without this sponsorship the Nationals would not be as attractive. There were 367 shooters who lined up on the mark; 165 AA grade, 94 A grade, 70 B grade and 38 C grade. This compared favourably to the 335 entries last year and 351 in 2009. There were the odd shooters who were seen crying over a lost target but 61 AA, 11 A and 6 B grade shooters shot the possible. This meant that just over 21% of the field shot the possible so there wasn’t much wrong with the targets, the settings or the conditions. C grade had five who shot 49 so they had to shoot off for the placings. The Mabey family trophy had 27 family groups entered to shoot this trophy. What a brilliant sport this is where families can compete both against and with each other. The shoot off started at 2.30 in absolutely perfect conditions and 6 hours later, after 250 targets, it was down to six New Zealanders. The next round Peter Goodwin fell out. The shoot off finished when the light started to fail and 325 shoot off targets had been shot. At that point there were 6 left to ponder the targets overnight. The bad luck award would have to go to Neill Pratt who missed the first target in the morning. The following round Toby Nicholl missed his first target giving him a shoot off score of 350/351. Following on close behind was Jon Beddis who missed his 5th target giving him 354/355 shoot off targets. This left Ewen Pirie and Brendon Malcolm to continue. It was another round 10 gunshot again when Ewen missed his 23rd target, giving Brendon the HOA title with 398/398 shoot off targets. The NZCTA introduced a new category of shooter to cater for the growing number of disabled shooters. As a trial disabled shooters are able to compete in their own class for the NZ Single Rise, Single Barrel and Points Score championships. There were four disabled shooters who availed themselves of this new category and Tony Brogden won this inaugural event with a score of 49. Again Thursday saw near perfect conditions for the Single Barrel Championship. As the temperature began to soar it was reminiscent of previous Nationals at Hamilton. There were 24 possibles out of the field of 348, including 3 from A Grade. The shoot off went 72 targets when Jon Beddis from Huntly took the HOA. Peter Goodwin was 1st AA Grade and Australia featured in the results as Glen Hayden took 2nd AA Grade after he shot 59 in the shoot off. New NZCTA Executive member David Da Silva from Rotorua was 3rd A Grade. It was wonderful to see Shane Ashforth receive the disabled category medal for this event. There was a huge presentation that evening as the Single Rise from the previous day was also presented. The NZ Single Barrel Championship is sponsored by Kilwell/Gamebore Ammunition. Kilwell are a huge sponsor of the NZCTA and have been for many years. The list of events they sponsor is extensive and the NZCTA Executive and members are deeply indebted to Kilwell for this on-going support of our sport. The trophies the Kilwell put on for the Single Barrel were very impressive and immensely well received by the recipients. The day concluded just after 7pm and people rushed off to the Hall of Fame dinner being held at the Cosmopolitan Club. Friday was always going to be a big day and the early morning fog didn’t help much. The Points Score event is the make or break event for many shooters who have aspirations of making the Mackintosh team. Today was Beretta NZ’s day. They sponsored both the NZ Points Score championship and the High Gun event. Martyn Coe and Beretta NZ are a key sponsor of the NZCTA and without their continuing support the championships would not be as attractive for everyone that attends. The NZ Points Score trophies were fiercely contested for between the 347 competitors. Interestingly, almost 48.5% of the field was AA grade and sadly only 6.5% were C grade. Conditions were near perfect and five shooters shot the possible. Brian Hartley shot 148/150 in the shoot off to take the HOA with David Muggeridge taking 1st AA grade with 146/150 shoot off targets. Tony Brogden won his second disabled medal with a score of 143. The High Gun event was sponsored by Beretta who supplied a cased Beretta 682E trap shotgun to the High Gun. This is a huge contribution to our sport which certainly adds an added incentive to all competitors to strive for this award. This event was where the Australians finally made their presence known. Arty Del Ben came up one point ahead on 438 to win the High Gun clear and take the Beretta gun, the Silver Fern, the sash, cup and the magnum of Gunn Estate wine. Following on, one point behind were Sam Clifford, Stephen Atkins and Peter Goodwin who had to shoot off to establish the AA Grade High Gun. Peter Goodin from Putaruru came out the victor to take the AA Grade High Gun. Young Hamish Bell from Nightcaps showed his form to take out the A Grade High Gun. This was a particularly fine feat for a young shooter. Gun Estate provided their delicious wine to all the championship High Guns plus the High Overall winners. Please remember this brand when at your local wine supplier as they also are a valued and long standing supporter of our sport. It’s not hard to drink their wine as they certainly make an exceptional product and have a very high reputation in the wine industry. With some shooters qualifying for junior or veterans’ team plus the open teams, it can all get rather confusing who goes where. This was all sorted rather painlessly and the team members established. Perazzi NZ and Brant Woodward have sponsored the Mackintosh event for the last few years and the NZCTA is grateful for his support. He has agreed to continue this valued sponsorship and the Executive and team members thank Brant for this. Saturday morning roll call at 9am saw all team members present but there was a slight fog around so shooting didn’t start until 10.30 when the conditions were perfect. This gave shooters time to collect the Maxam ammunition, have a coffee and prepare themselves for the event. There was only one 300/300 shot by Peter Goodwin, who was also the highest qualifier for the team with the only 250 possible. The medals were presented, the photos were taken and everyone buzzed off home, hopefully happy. That then was the end of the 2011 DTL Nationals. Please spare a thought to the committee members of the Waikato Club. Without their untiring work this event would not have been the success it was. I will not name individuals for fear of missing someone who deserved to be mentioned but you all know who you are. On behalf of the NZCTA Executive and the shooters who attended – THANK YOU. It was envisaged from an early start that the event would draw a big crowd as it preceded the World English Sporting Champs being held at T.V.D.A. the following weekend. Due to the likelihood of a larger than normal entry the Club decided to run 75 targets per day, and are thankful to the N.Z.C.T.A. for allowing this to happen as a ‘one off’. Three new style FITASC grounds was the chosen format, which would also mean the shooters could enjoy much of the great terrain the club has to offer in the surrounding hills and valleys. The Club was privileged to have overseas visitors from Ireland, England, Sweden, Canada, New Caledonia, Australia and the South Island, many coming back after the great experience of the 2009 Oceania Champs held on the same ground. The first event on Saturday was the North Island Champs, and precisely 200 made the starting line. The previous night a rather large tropical cyclone raced through the region dropping torrential rain which caused major slips around the Club grounds, and closed a few roads heading to town. However, the morning was fine although very windy which made a few targets a little more challenging than they were meant to be! Brian Deadman set the early pace with 25, a great score in tough conditions. He then managed to repeat the effort for 50 straight – he recorded the only 25’s of the event. Following up with 23 gave him a clear lead of three targets at the finish ahead of John Younger of Australia on 70. A host of quality shooters followed; Brenton Irons (Aust) 69, with Mark Vessey (Eng/Kiwi), Dale Clark (NZ), David Marshall (Ire), and Stu Carter (Can) all on 68. Tim Birdsall won a 3 way shoot off for B Grade after being tied on 68 with Scott McDonald (Aust) and Roland Morris (Ire). John McCormack (Ire) finished on top of C Grade with 66, followed by Alan Grey on 56 and Sylvano Abdelkader on 54. Sarah Hamburger continued her good form to win Ladies with 62, and Adam Shale (Aust) took out Juniors also on 62. Rod Bryant and Bryan Rafferty both shot 66 to win Veterans and Super Veterans respectively. The North Island Teams event was taken by Putaruru ‘Volunteer Fire Brigade’ which included Des Coe, Brian Deadman, Peter Goodwin and John Waterworth – a tough team to beat. Sunday saw the start of the 150 target National event, which attracted 204 competitors. The strong winds died out overnight leaving conditions much better for the next two days although occasional breezes and a few light showers caught a few of the unwary. By the end of the day Brenton Irons, Mark Vessey, Colin Dunne (Aust) and Anthony Panetta (Aust) all lead the charge on 68/75. Craig Macpherson (Aust) finished one back on 67. Brian Deadman came unstuck on one round carding a score that can’t be mentioned on paper, meaning he was unlikely to repeat his heroics of the North Island event. Jonathan Hermansson (Swe) led the way for the Juniors and also threatened the overall leaders on 66. The scores were still very close at the end of day two, and two shooters tied on top shooting 135/150. Brenton Irons and Craig Macpherson went through a tense 25 target shoot off to find the winner. Irons emerged 2 targets clear and took the 2011 National Title. Mark Vessey (134) and Anthony Panetta (133) rounded out AA Grade and the top four. Adam Hanson finished well with 129 to make sure a real Kiwi took home a respectable medal in the National event, (no offence Mark, but you’re not one of us just yet…!). Mark Doyle and Aiden O’Sullivan took the other two A Grade places on 126 and 122. B Grade this time saw Roland Morris take gold, beating Tim Birdsall 118 to 117, with Maurice Cavanagh finishing 3rd on 117 after a shoot off. The committee members put a lot of hard work into getting all the traps in pristine condition worthy of such an event. This included working in appalling wet conditions many days in a row the week before. As a club, we were hopeful that the weekend of the event would be dry enough to shoot despite Friday night being horrendous in the weather front. The whole of the North Island was definitely battered and bruised early on Saturday morning. However, the two rain fairies that are somehow on the committee managed to do their work, as despite it raining very heavily at 7am, the weather slowly, but surely it began to clear which was a good sign. I can say that sleeping next to one of our rain fairies is a trialling event in itself, but worth it in the end. Skeet was the first event of the day and was contested by 38 shooters. Tony Truss, Colin Heard, Dave Da Silva, Ian Marshall, Steve Cooper and Mark Walsh managed to shoot the possible. After the shoot off, Steve Cooper managed to end up on top taking out Sheet HOA. Which was good because it was the only event which Steve registered for, despite living a very long distance away. The second event of the day was the minis. Out of 41 shooters, 18 managed to shoot the possible. The shoot off sorted out the placings though, with Scott Verran taking out HOA. Natalie gave the boys a run for their money but in the end settled for the Ladies title having been amongst those who shot the possible. Double Rise was next on the menu. From the field of 42 shooters there were 4 possibles shot with 8 close behind, but not close enough, on 19. Devon Da Silva, Graeme Williams, David Wordley and Des Coe fought it out with David Wordley taking the top placing, leaving Graeme Williams with 1st A and Veterans, Des Coe with 2nd A and Devon with 3rd A and the Junior title. We did hear that there were supposed to be many more shooters turn up on the first day; however the weather had battered the North Island so much that many potential shooters were stuck on the wrong side of slips and floods. Some budding shooters were forced to take alternative, and much longer routes, as the will of the trigger finger was too great. Lunch was a little slow for our caterer after having catered for the Sporting 18 gunshot weekend, but the food was just as wonderful. Different shooters I suppose. Next up was the Single Rise. From the field of 42, 18 were steady enough to take out the possible. This lead to a long enduring shoot off which went until dusk. Natalie Curtis was in fine form and gave the boys a definite run for their money here, as was the NZCTA president Keith Livingstone. However, Laurie Coppins held on and managed to peg back the rest and took out HOA. This left Keith Livingstone with 1st A, Natalie with 2nd A, Neil Pratt with 3rd A. It was interesting to sit in the club rooms and listening to one young fella travelling with Neil, who by this time had enough for the day, get real excited when Neil dropped his target. Just shows that the younger generation just doesn’t understand the importance of such an event and/or title. With the day over, the weather which had managed to hold off all day did pack it in for the night and the rain fairies had their work cut out for them again. The combined efforts of both fairies ensured that Sunday was just as good, if not better, than that of Saturday. I must say sleeping next to one of them is a job in itself though. After the trials, tribulations and disappointment of day one, there were some shooters who chose to stay away, but the better weather ensured that other shooters chose to take their places. Some would say it was the changes made in the programme by the NZCTA, and/or the particular weekend that this event is scheduled to be held on but unless someone comes up with a better way to do it, it will be the same programme and same weekend next year. In saying this, we ended up with a field of 36 Shooters for the day whom were contesting for the titles of Triples, Points Score and Single Barrel as well as the BoP Provincial High Gun. The first event of the day was the triples. The only possible was taken out by Lindsay Stephenson and thus the HOA. Not bad with the lack of sleep he endured. Six shooters were left to sort out the placings in A grade having shot 49. Rotorua did well with Dave Da Silva and Graeme Geater taking 1st and 2nd A grade respectively. This left Mark Walsh with 3rd A. It was a hard event, but good results. This lead on to Points Score. There was some terrific shooting with Grant Wallace, Grant Castles, David Wordley, Natalie Curtis and Anja Van de Wetering managing to shoot the possible. Not sure what happened here but there was not a Rotorua member in sight. Natalie had not lost her fine form from yesterday and fought hard against David Wordley. However, David managed to hold it together just enough to take HOA from Natalie, leaving her with 1st A grade and Grant Castles and Grant Wallace 2nd and 3rd respectively. The last event of the day and weekend was the Single Barrel. Nine shooters managed to shoot the lot and apart from Natalie Curtis and Graham Geater, they were new names fighting for the top placings. Robert Prince managed to hold off Natalie and took HOA. This left Natalie with 1st A, Graham Geater with 2nd A and Chris Cassin with 3rd A. It must be mentioned that Ian Lindsay shot extremely well, managing 24 out of 25 and took out the B grade. Having finished all the events, the Provincial High Gun placings were clear with the help of the shooting spreadsheet which Martin developed. His programme was good to use on such an event and it was good to have Martin there to clarify a few things during the weekend. Thanks Martin. The High Gun was clearly won by David Wordley having achieved the score of 230/235. Despite shooting well, David Da Silva was 1 point down and therefore took the A grade High Gun. Bruce Parkin with a score of 210 took B grade High Gun, and David Balfour took C Grade High Gun with a solid score of 177. Natalie Curtis took out the ladies title with 225, Devon Da Silva managed the Juniors High Gun with a score of 217 and the Veterans was won by Graham Geater with 229. Great shooting by all, although it would have been better competition in C grade if there were more people in attendance. Along with these High Gun placings, there were also the two man and club teams up for grabs from the results of the 1st day shooting. Ian Marshall and Martin van de Wetering took the two man squad out from Mark Walsh and Scott Verran with only 4 points in it. The Rotorua Gun Club, consisting of Dave Da Silva, Graham Geater, Colin Heard and Keith Livingstone, managed to take out the Club Teams event with 293 over Thames and Whitianga, 282 and 268 respectively. It was a nice ending to a nice weekend. The weather held up with the help of two hairy fairies, something which the club was grateful for although I in turn was grateful for a good night’s sleep ahead. I can only apologise for the lateness of this report to all shooters involved and those who were interested in the results. It was supposed to be written by Tony Truss, however because of work commitments and the lack of memory about the weekend, which could be related to the fact that he did not achieve any significant placings throughout the entire event, I have chosen to stand up and complete this long overdue report. In spite of this, I look forward to seeing you sometime soon through the little window of the Rotorua Rod and Gun Club’s clubrooms. Skeet – HOA Steven Cooper, Rotorua 25. The three 2011 inductees for the evening were; Mr (Ernest) E.R. King originally born in the South Island E.R.King had a long association with the Waihi Gun Club. Indeed the photographs of Mr King were made available to the NZCTA from the Waihi Gun Club. E.R.King`s grandson Mr Peter King travelled all the way from Perth in Western Australia to attend this presentation evening along with Mr Steven King the other Grandson who lives in NZ. Peter had in his possession one of the original National Medals his grandfather had won complete with the diamond embedded. It was indeed a treat to finally see one of these medals up close as most of us had only ever seen them in photographs. Second inductee for the evening was Mr Ernie Groome. Ernie`s family was also in attendance to receive the award on behalf of the family, Ernie`s daughter Mrs Tiny White and son Mick Groome both attended along with Jacq and Graeme Sime (Granddaughter) and their son Mike Sime (Great grandson). Obviously the shooting traditions have continued throughout the generations. Again we were treated to the up close view of another of the NZ National gold medals as Tiny White had also brought one along for us to view. The relevance of this still stands true today. Ernie travelled widely both internationally and nationally to compete in his time and his achievements speak for themselves as to how good he was at his chosen sport. Third inductee for the evening needed no introduction to those present, Mr Ray Everett. Ray`s achievements are widely known throughout the trapshooting fraternity and it was fitting that Ray`s son Dean was there to speak about his father`s achievements and acknowledge his passion for the sport. While recognising his special talents as a trap shooter, his contribution to coaching of others within our sport is also widely recognised and appreciated. Ray`s achievements are envied by many and set the standard for so many of our younger shooters to aspire to. A special award from the NZCTA was also presented to National Secretary Mrs Adrienne Sears for 20 years’ service in the position as National Secretary. It was also acknowledged that Adrienne`s service to our sport actually spans significantly longer than 20 years as she was also secretary of the Christchurch Gun Club for a number of years prior to taking the position of National Secretary. Last presentation for the evening was that of shooter of the year for 2010. This was awarded to Gavin Searle, there being four other nominees for this award: Tony Truss, Dave Wordley, Colin Waghorn and Boston Walker International Titles 2000 Australian Single Barrel 2005 Australian Single Barrel gunshot 21 wanted At the Association AGM in March, it was announced that the Waikato Clay Target Club has been selected to host the 11th ICTSF World DTL championships in 2014. This event will run immediately after the 2014 NZCTA Nationals and is expected to be a howling success. Part of the success of the event will rely on at least 12 trained and validated referees being available to the Waikato club for the three days of competition. We have over two years to organise those people, but we need to get this ball rolling as soon as possible. Council has agreed to re-introduce official referees at Association matches to officiate at shoot-offs and to be available at all clubs to engender good safety habits, rule awareness and shooting etiquette. We have yet to determine a formal process for appointing new referees, but we are working on that now. In the interim, there are about 20 shooters who were previously appointed association referees and who the association would like to invite back to active service. Then there are another 15 or so who have recently indicated an interest in becoming an official referee. Some of these people have sat the skeet section of the referee examination. Referees for 2014 World DTL Champs at Waikato A Multi Choice and True/False rules knowledge test has been created and is almost ready for issue to the volunteer Referees Examiners. These examiners are: • Ron Thompson from Auckland • Mike Shepherd from Canterbury • Kelvin Gutsell from Southland Once these gents have sat their own examinations, they will be able to issue the tests to individuals who otherwise meet the requirements. At this early stage we will be generating club referees and would dearly like to see at least one member from each club identified as the club referee. Qualifications for Referees • Be recommended by your club committee • be knowledgeable of the rules • be able to make informed decisions quickly • be capable of identifying unsafe acts or situations • have a basic knowledge of the relevant NZ laws as they apply to firearms and shooting • be prepared to officiate in all weather conditions • have a desire to ensure all shooters have fair and equal opportunity to shoot their match targets in a safe environment Or: • have previously held an appointment as an Association Referee, and • have maintained conversance with the NZCTA rules We have the opportunity to reestablish a pool of competent referees to help the association meet its obligations and to ensure consistency in all facets of competition. To do this we need appropriately motivated volunteers who we can identify as “rule savvy” and appoint as club referees. Then, once a proper process has been developed, Council can take recommendations for Official referees and make such appointments as it deems appropriate. If you meet the requirements and are prepared to make yourself available as a referee, please contact me at blue. [email protected] and let me know. Please indicate whether or not you will be prepared to officiate at the 11th World DTL champs in Hamilton in March 2014. The content for this issue of Referees’ Corner was self-evident when I looked at the inbox. Here are some practical instances that have been identified by mainstream shooters as worth discussing in this forum. My thanks to those who provided the examples below. John McCormick of Southbridge writes: I have a question regarding pre-match responsibility of shooters – rule 4-15. If a shooter runs out of ammunition part way through a match, are they permitted to accept more either from a spectator or another shooter?...and if they are allowed, do any penalties apply? Could the answer to this question be published in the Gunshot magazine? The new rule books are really good and I have been working my way through them brushing up my knowledge. Yours sincerely, John McCormick (8669) The rule John has identified makes it the shooters responsibility to be on the mark on time with all equipment required to shoot the match. The rule is there to ensure that other shooter’s are not disrupted at any stage by a shooter who fails to organise him/herself. That is, one who needs to get more ammunition, get the correct chokes, fetch the correct gun or find his/her shooting glasses etc., and has left it until the last minute to organise, and the rest of the squad are on the mark waiting. This also means that a shooter cannot hold up the squad if he runs out of ammo during a match. The shooter has 10 seconds after the previous shooter has fired to call for his/her target (rule 5-12), and cannot absent him/herself from the squad without permission. The first instance of time penalty incurs a warning; subsequent occurrences incur a one target penalty (rule 4-49). If the shooter left the squad without permission, all the rest of the targets in that round would be scored as lost (rule 4-48). For a shooter to be able to disrupt a squad there has to be a justifiable reason and the time the squad may be held up for is strictly limited. A disabled gun for example will give a shooter three minutes away from the squad to perform repairs or obtain a replacement, as will faulty ammunition; see rule 4-31 h) and g). Three minutes is exactly that; not four or five minutes; 180 seconds max. Otherwise the shooter can finish the round later at a time determined by shoot management. (Rule 4-31 h)) Can another shooter or a spectator provide a shell or two? I guess that depends on how tough are you going to play. Consider the circumstances first: • What was the shooter doing when he failed to pack enough ammunition? • Is he the club trap mechanic and had been repairing traps? • Was he refereeing another squad? • Or is he a chat-o-holic who had just been holding court in the car park for the past half hour? • Did a trap malfunction cause shooters to have to use excessive numbers of their spare shells on “no targets”? There are many shades of grey here: many reasons that create the situation, so the shoot management and referee would need to weigh up the causes before imposing any penalty. That said, if it has been determined that a penalty is appropriate, the following should be taken as a guide. Provided no-one in the squad is disrupted, and provided there is no time delay caused, such assistance is not specifically prohibited, but a shooter could earn a warning under rule 4-49 for not having brought sufficient shells to complete the event. If he then runs out again, a one target penalty would have to apply. You’ll note that rule 4-49 demands that such penalty for a second occurrence “must be applied”; it is not discretionary. Thanks John. A good question well asked. I hope this is a satisfactory answer for you. A shooter from North of the Bombay Hills also writes: I have recent experience of four skeet rule interpretation queries. You may want to use them in your rules corner of Gunshot. Query 1 • The shooter is on Station 6 to shoot doubles. • The low target emerges broken. • The shooter shoots the broken low house target and then fires at and misses the high house target all before ref calls no target. • What is the correct call? Answer: The correct call is “No Target. Proof double to determine the result of both shots”. Rule 6-67 refers. Query 2 • The shooter is on station 6 to shoot doubles. • The low target emerges with a chip flying low right and not seen by shooter. • The low target and then high target are shot and broken. The ref then calls no target on the low. • What is the call? Answer: This call is “No Target. Proof double to determine the result of both shots”. Rule 6-67 refers. Query 3 • The shooter is on station 2 to shoot doubles. • Shooter shoots high target and then the low target. • The ref, (no scorer present) after watching the high target break, notices that the flight path of the low house is irregular the target is flying tipped down on the shooter’s right hand side and turning to the shooter’s right such that if not shot it would probably have landed near station 1. • The ref calls one-one. A fellow competitor says “there was no centre in the target”. The ref says ”I didn’t see that the target was broken. If the shooter had not shot at the low house target I would have called for a proof double first target scored”. • Should the Ref have called a no target on the second target on the word of a fellow competitor even though he did not see that the target was broken? Discussion: While the rule 6-18 c) is emphatic that the result of firing at a broken target is not to be scored, the referee has to identify the gunshot 23 target as broken to make such a call. In this case it appears that the referee only noticed the target flight was irregular but failed to call it before the shooter fired. Rule 6-18 makes it a referee’s first duty to declare “No Target” as soon as he/she determines that an irregular target has been thrown but rule 6-18 a) makes it mandatory to score the target if the shot was made before the call. Answer: Rule 4.03 f ) explains that the referee must make the final decision himself. The referee seems to have made the correct decision based on his observations. It could well be that if the shooter himself had told the referee that the target had no centre, the referee would have given a proof pair to determine the result of the low target. Query 4 • The shooter is on station 2 and has missed high 2 double. Repeat to shoot. • Ref pulls a double instead of a single high. • The shooter misses the high 2 target. The shooter requests a no target is called because of interference from the low house target. • What is the call? Answer: The call is “Lost target”. Rule 6-31 b) is specific about this occurrence. • And a late entry from up North: • The shooter calls for high 6. • The target is released. • An audible click is heard as the shooter pulls the trigger. • The ref heard the click and asked the shooter to open the gun. • Inspection of the cartridge revealed that the primer was absent. • Is this covered by: - Rule 6-37 a) i, or by Rule 6-37b? Bearing in mind that there was no firing pin indentation because there was no primer and as the primer was absent the powder had spilled out. Discussion: A couple of years ago, a very big European ammunition company manufactured several millions of primed, empty shells with the primer set too deep in the case. These hulls were delivered to reloading companies all over the world and many end users experienced that awful “click” sound when they pulled the trigger. In an unacceptably high proportion of instances, the firing pin failed to strike the primer face creating a malfunction situation. In New Zealand this gave rise to literally hundreds of gun malfunction calls, as there was no indentation on the primer. Some people sent their guns to be repaired and others blamed hard primers. Eventually the cause was isolated and everyone permitted ammo malfunctions without the primer indentation - a sensible outcome. Answer: Neither of the rules mentioned covers the situation, but I believe the intent of the rules has been met. In this case, the hammer was heard to drop and presuming there were two shells in the gun, the referee knows the gun was loaded with a fresh (albeit faulty) cartridge and that the trigger was pulled. The absent primer tells us it was an ammo malfunction rather than a gun malfunction. I would certainly allow this instance as a faulty cartridge knowing that after it occurs a second time, the gloves are off and all further instances will be scored “lost”. This would still protect the rest of the squad from the home re-loader who brings his duds and bloopers along to the club and uses them in a competition. Well, it looks like I’ve used up all the space I had for this article. Thank you once again shooters; please check your scores and your guns 24 gunshot Continued from Page 16 John McCormack took the C Grade clean sweep shooting 107, beating Alan Grey again. Alan finished closer this time though with 104. Chris Gibbison showed some impressive late form to claim Bronze on 102. Tara Lawrence took out the National Ladies title with 110, while world class Junior Jonathan Hermansson shot an impressive 131. Robin Shawyer (124) and Dick Foster (115) won Veterans and Super Veterans respectively. The event finished in great spirits, with very satisfying comments coming from many shooters. Most were now looking ahead to the World English in Paeroa, but were also keen to rest up for a couple of days after 3 tough days on competition. No rest for the committee and workers though, with a major clean up ahead. The Rotorua Rod & Gun Club wishes to acknowledge the generous support and sponsorship from the following people and companies; Battery Town and Hunt Auto Electrical, Citizen Watches and Truss Jewellers, NSI Ammunition and Mai Mai Supplies, Auckland Met Gun Club, Amber Heights (Terry Lalich), Lone Pine Sporting Clays (Darryl Groundwater), N.Z. Community Trust, Lion Foundation, Laporte and Kilwell Sports. Without these companies and individuals, this event wouldn’t have been the success it was, so the generous support is much appreciated Ernest Groome’s Motto for those to come. Courage When the last clay bird is shot at, And you’re walking from the line, Perhaps a new born champion; Or just one more behind, Don’t take the game too serious! If you’ve really done your best, But keep your head and chin up And smile just like the rest. For the scores of life aren’t everything, Nor the bally-hoo and such, But the way you went to battle, And your conduct count for much. It’s not the loot you’ve garnered, Nor the write-ups you have gained, But the fact you’ve been a SPORTSMAN, And you’ve tried that brings you fame. For the trophies soon will tarnish, And the purse is quickly spent, But the way you waged the battle, And the helping hand you lent, Will count more in the reckoning, That will come along one day, And the memories you must live with, Will help you on your way. So shoot each string the best you can, And play the game full square, Just do as you’d have others do, Earn a word from those who care. Then whether you come out high gun, Or just an also ran, Your heart is light, your soul at peace, You’ve done the best you can. The Scholarship was won by 17-year old Jamie Peryer-Fursdon from the Hutt Valley Clay Target Club who capped off a positive week of shooting at the Nationals with the award. The Beretta Junior Scholarship is designed to assist promising young shooters to stay in the sport at a time when they are moving on from college either into university or full-time work. There are considerable financial pressures on young shooters and their families supporting them when they aren’t earning their way in the world, so the sponsorship was developed to reward deserving junior shooters and to give them ‘a leg up’ to continue their development within clay target shooting. The Scholarship concept has been very successful over the 8 years it has been running and this year’s DTL Nationals were an effective demonstration of just how successful it has been with current and past recipients featuring during the week: • Brendan Malcolm won the Single Rise and the Handicap Championships it ends, along with a full set of clothing and shooting gear and supply of RC ammunition. The NZCTA thanks Beretta NZ for its continued support of the Junior Scholarship and would encourage all junior shooters aged 17-21 years to seriously consider entering the 2012 Scholarship. Entries will be open following the NZ Secondary Schools Championships in September. Barry Williamson, Judging Convenor on behalf of the NZCTA • Colin Waghorn won the Double Rise Championship and the Whisky Trophy Match and was a member of the Mackintosh team • Nick Gavin, Nicholas Picknell and Jamie all shot their way into the senior Mackintosh team Jamie had a good week getting into the senior Mackintosh team via a shoot-off. He also won the Juniors title in the Ball Trap Championship and the Whisky Trophy event. This year’s selection process was as difficult as years gone by. Thanks to a professional and un-biased judging panel consisting of Gavin Paton, Gavin Searle, Ewen Pirie and the writer, the selection process was completed well before the Nationals, so those who didn’t get through were advised well prior, given that the recipient has to be present at the Nationals to receive the Scholarship presentation. The standard was extremely high this year and the final rankings were very close. The Scholarship is not designed to necessarily reward elite shooters; it is designed to look for shooters showing promise and those who need financial assistance to stay in the sport. The fact that Beretta has had such outstanding results from its recipients shows the success of the concept, as with only one exception, at the time of being awarded the Scholarship, most recipients had not performed at the highest level, but soon came through with the results they had alluded to in their entries. Jamie fulfilled all the necessary criteria and Beretta NZ is looking forward to helping him achieve his shooting goals over the next two years. The NZCTA is a proud partner in the Scholarship through the provision of a cash fund to be used for travel and future ammunition purchases, a coaching programme and providing the judging panel on behalf of Beretta. The Scholarship is a generous two-year offering consisting of a new Beretta 682E for the period of the Scholarship with the opportunity to purchase the shotgun at a subsidised price when 26 gunshot Chris Ziesler (Beretta NZ Ltd) with Jamie Peryer-Fursdon (Beretta Scholarship) EXCLUSIVE GUNSHOT READER SPECIALS CLAY CLAY TARGET AMMO .99 $ TARGETS 10¢ 79 SHIPMENTS SELL OUT QUICKLY +GST PER CLAY PLACE YOUR ORDER AVAILABLE WHEN BUYING 60X CARTONS OF ISSF 150 CLAYS OR HIGH DOME 144 CLAYS BLACK OR FLUORESCENT AVAILABLE INCL GST NOW! Previously the oldest information available was photos from 1914. That means we have missed our Centenary by a mere 12 years. The club will be holding a centenary celebration over Labour weekend in late October which will include a Centenary shoot on the Saturday with a BBQ at the club etc. On Sunday and Monday there will be the Thames Valley District Championships. These dates and celebrations will also include a Jubilee for the club being on its grounds at the Thames airfield for 50 years. In 1961 the club was located to the airfield grounds and held its first club championships in early 1962, so there will be a double cause to celebrate the club history. More details of the weekend events, including the programme for the 3 days will follow in Gunshot later. We look forward to hosting club members, past members and visitors from all over and invite you to join us for this special event. Canterbury Earthquake Following the devastating event in Christchurch in February, The Thames Club Committee decided to hold a fund raising shoot on our regular March club day. Traditionally this has been a quiet day as it is so near to the completion of the NZCTA National Champs, but by holding this event we hoped to attract a few who were maybe not too shot out. The day’s programme included both a DTL day or a 100 target skeet event, so whichever took your fancy could be enjoyed. It was very pleasing to have just on 40 shooters shoot the DTL and two squads shoot 100 targets skeet. The club donated its income from the shoot and many shooters also donated their sweep winnings too. A brand new shooting jacket was donated by Don McCarthy as a raffle with all proceeds to go into the fund. It was rewarding to be able to send $1,200 to the NZCTA relief fund at the end of the day and we hope this will in some small way make things a little brighter for someone affected by the quake gunshot 31 2010 ALLAN 2010 H.C. It was bad enough hearing in the newsroom that a R22 helicopter was reported overdue somewhere in the Canterbury high country, but when confirmation was received that it was Adrian’s machine, one thought he’s sitting up there somewhere fishing or helping out a friend. It was with utter disbelief that the worst possible news came through that Adrian had crashed and not survived. In the aviation world he was regarded as an extremely careful, diligent and experienced pilot of over 20 years. He has been a member of the NZCTA for many years, although not actively clay shooting at the moment was a generous sponsor of shooting events and was always interested in what was going on in the Sporting world. He started Shooters Supplies in Riccarton in 1982, and it was a place where many friends gathered for a chat or the occasional rum, and the shop echoed many a joke, laughs and its fair share of straight out lies! His legacy goes back beyond that though, and at a young age had a hardware shop in Hornby where his love of guns, helicopters and life developed and blossomed. Never afraid of hard work, often he was found on the farm with the goats, setting up his small shooting coaching school, developing a shooting reserve and trying to balance business life with a hectic and social home life. Adrian and Jane had just built their dream home and together with family, life only had one gear, ‘full on’. Adrian was a very successful business man with a very diverse portfolio and was widely known throughout Christchurch for his business acumen. As his friend and mentor, pilot Dick Deaker said “I’ve never heard one person say a bad word about him”, not bad for a businessman, and sums up the man to a tee. He is survived by his partner Jane, and family Andy, Holly, Scott, Dale and Nicole. Ron Madden Tauranga No 1 363 Tauranga No 2 360 Tauranga No 3 355 long runs 344 • 25 DTL STUDENT – M. Our thanks go to Repco Upper Hutt, who have supplied approximately $1,000.00 worth of prizes. Unfortunately, we only had 17 shooters contesting the prize pool and with prizes going down to tenth place, not many shooters missed out on a prize. Highest score of the day was 95’s, recorded by Jamie Peryer-Fursdon, Wayne Pym and Robert Prince and after a short shoot off, first place was won by Robert Prince from Wayne Pym taking second and Jamie Peryer-Fursdon third place. Dave Turner, Don Staples and Kim Owen, on 93’s had to shoot off with Kim Owen taking fourth place, Dave Turner fifth place and Don Staples sixth. No more shoot offs were required for the remaining places with Grant Wareham taking seventh place on 92, Phill Bazalo eighth place on 91, Rick Spence ninth place on 90 and Karl Andrews taking tenth place with an 89. Thanks again to Darren from Repco Upper Hutt for supplying the prizes, all the prizes were well received by their respective recipients. The small turnout of shooters made for a nice early finish, ready for 150 targets Sunday. A better number attended on the Sunday 20th February with 32 shooters to contest the Willie Paurini Memorial Shield held over 100 tgt Single Rise. As the Nationals were only a few weeks away, we programmed the 100 tgts to be shot as 50 tgts Single Rise and 50 tgts Point Score events with the combined scores for the Willie Paurini Memorial Shield still scored on a single rise basis. Shooters are given a number of targets in, according to the higher of their last two common mark percentages rounded up. Shooters’ scores plus their number of targets in that reach 100, qualify to shoot off for the Willie Paurini Memorial Shield on a handicap by distance basis. The benefit of this system allows all shooters an equal chance of winning the shield. 14 shooters qualified for the shoot off, 7 from A grade and 7 from C grade. They all shot off on their respective handicap by distance marks and the eventual winner was Dave Turner, a great effort off 22 metres. The event was kindly sponsored again by Target Products with prizes awarded to the Willie Paurini Memorial Shield winner and first, second and third place in the three grades over the 100 targets, again on a single rise basis. Greg Bentley, Robert Prince and Dave Turner shot the 100 and after a shoot off couldn’t separate Robert Prince and Dave Turner, they decided to split the Falcon ammunition prize. So first equal in A grade was shared by Robert Prince and Dave Turner and third A grade going to Greg Bentley. Jamie Cane posted the best B grade score shooting a 90, closely followed by Brendon Coe on 89 and Karen Hayes on 87. Following on from his C Grade win last year, Ian Barr won C grade again with a very good 94, followed by Don Staples 92 and John Varley on 90. We finished off the day with a 25 pair Double Rise match, again with the Nationals in mind. Keith Zehnder, Robert Prince and Dave Turner posted the best scores of the day on a pair that most shooters struggled with, sharing the A grade sweep on 42’s. Dave Gwerder won B grade with 35, Jamie Cane second on 30 and Brendon Coe third on 25. Grant Wareham won C grade with a very good 37 followed by John Varley on 35, Ian Barr and Don Staples sharing third with 34’s. We also ran an optional ungraded sweep over the 150 tgts for the day and a sweep over the 250 tgts for the weekend. Robert Prince and Dave Turner were first equal over the 150 tgts with a score of 142 and Greg Bentley third on 138. Robert Prince took out the sweep over the two days with a score of 237, closely followed by Dave Turner on 235, Dave Grant and Phill Bazalo sharing third place on 223’s. Another good day’s shooting at Hutt Valley with the usual thank you to Robert Prince for setting the targets and Turner and Hooch for keeping the shoot running smoothly and all the others that pitched in on the day, many thanks Greg Bentley 3rd A Grade Kim Owen 4th Repco 100 Dave Turner receiving the sponsor’s product (Target Products) for the Willie Paurini See you next time. Life Membership for Trevor Manson MOVED Keith Livingstone/Neil Winsloe “That Trevor Manson be awarded NZCTA Life Membership.” Carried Trevor thanked the meeting for the honour bestowed on him 2. Range Manual. Gavin Searle spoke to the meeting on the range manual that has been sent out to clubs. He advised clubs must draw up a set of Range Standing Orders and advised the NZCTA are giving the responsibility back to clubs to manage their ranges. The NZCTA Council has adopted this but is now asking clubs to endorse the Manual. MOVED Peter Lapwood/Mark Walsh “That the NZCTA Range Manual be adopted.” Carried 3. 2014 World DTL allocation. The process of the allocation was advised to the meeting. The NZCTA Council has voted to allocate this event to the Waikato Clay Target Club. It was noted that this would require a change to the rotation of the 2014 DTL Nationals to enable the Worlds to be run in conjunction with our Nationals. 4. Dean Everett asked the Chair what assistance Council has given to clubs for upgrades. Keith Livingstone replied that we have loaned TVDA $10,000 as seeding capital to enable them to run the World English Sporting Championships. This has been the only monetary contribution. Dean asked what gunshot 37 assistance the NZCTA is going to give clubs in computerising. Keith advised that this project is still in its infancy and we are aware that the groundwork must be right for this. This could be a 5 year plan. Martin van de Wetering spoke on the need to make the programme easy for clubs to use and simplify the office procedures but it was vital to select the most suitable operating platform and try to future proof the system as much as possible. Continued from Page 6 Gavin Searle commented on pre-squadding and the disadvantages of this. Mainly it appears to kill any social interaction between competitors shooting at other times. by sporting shooters. The emphasis will be on brand new good gear and either trailers or a truck depending on members thoughts. The club will be a little while away in hosting its first “public” shoot and is now in the process of a setting up its own infrastructure, applying for some NZCTA shoots and looking at shoot dates in the spring that will not interfere in other clubs. I am an avid reader of Gunshot and eagerly await it arriving and read every word more than once, so when the last issue arrived I was extremely disappointed I must say. AS Winston Churchill said “This was their finest hour”, well it should have been for Sporto’s, but seeing a front cover of a DTL shoot held in December, when it probably should have been George Digweed, it was only his 18th World Championship!! Not only that, Stager Sports and Hugh Bradley would have been disappointed, as he gave a new Blazer shotgun and really received no publicity for his very generous sponsorship. The sponsors are extremely valuable to us, even more so in these tight times and should be extremely high on the priority list when sitting up and running shoots. I, and most people at the recent GP, would have thought Sporting, especially an NZCTA run event, would have expected a bit more than 2 pages and several B&W photo’s especially when other events attracting fewer than 100 shooters had more pages and colour photos. I do understand it takes huge efforts and volunteer labour to produce the magazine, but let’s try to bring all the codes together and showcase them all. Enough said and there I let it rest. The Meeting closed at 7.12pm Ron Madden for the Sporting Committee 5. Brian Smith asked about squadding at major events and suggested we should use same the first squads on each day. 6. Martin van de Wetering advised he is retiring from Council and commented on what Councillors put into the role and reiterated that everyone has the best interest of the shooters at heart. He congratulated Trevor and thanked everyone for the support he has enjoyed. The meeting adjourned at 6.45pm and reconvened at 7.00pm. The voting on the remits was announced Keith Livingstone announced that some clubs are hosting a charity shoot for the Christchurch Earthquake fund that the NZCTA will establish. Advertising in Gunshot will be free for these events and the NZCTA will administer funds collected to those shooters deemed to need assistance. Sunday February 6th had a slight northerly breeze at the Woodville Clay Target Club. A fine day to hold the 200tgt Target Products sponsored shoot. Our shooters started turning up early for what was to be a marathon day. We ended up with 55 shooters, 15 more than last year. We thought we had it under control with 4 traps and shooting 50 targets per visit until our latest purchased trap decided to give us trouble and we ended up using 3 traps and finishing at 6pm. The programme consisted of 100 DTL Single Rise, 50 Point Score and 50 Single Barrel. We threw over 10 thousand targets for the day, just over 66 cartons of CCI Targets. Broken targets could be counted on one hand. Dave Peck (Woodville) was the overall winner with an impressive 293/300. The attendance at the club swells to well above a normal club day and shooters from far and wide are out there enjoying the events and doing their very best to take home a trophy. As trap shooters, we are competitive by nature and that is all part of our sport. But is our system of presenting trophies the right way to do things? At a recent club championship, all shooters at the trophy presentation at the conclusion of the day’s events eagerly awaited the President’s speech followed by the trophy presentations. A couple of younger shooters had shot extremely well and deserved the trophies they were about to receive. It was obviously a disappointment to them when they were acknowledged as having won the trophy, but could not be presented with it as the winner from the previous year had not bothered to bring the trophy back. As an estimate, the best part of 50% of the trophies just weren’t available. As an aside, often the person who had the trophy previously sometimes can’t even manage to get the engraving done. Perhaps a better system might be as follows: • The Club recalls all of its trophies and retains them indefinitely. • When the trophies are competed for at clubs annual championships, then the club arranges for the trophies to be engraved with the appropriate details. The winner of that trophy pays for the engraving and the trophy goes back into the clubs trophy cabinet. • The club presents the winner with a shooting vest badge which details the event, year and winner. The recipient would retain this for life. Such a system would overcome the possibility of trophies being not returned or even permanently lost and I believe the shooting badge would be as keenly sought after as any trophy John Larcombe Obviously the current holder of the trophy should ensure that it gets back to the club for its annual club championship day, but this is often not the case. With a very small number of club members, approx. five, we did very well to get through the very humid (weather wise) occasion.
