The International
Sivananda Yoga Vedanta
Centres
Founded in 1959 by Swami Vishnudevananda,
we are a non-profit organization whose purpose is
to share the teachings of Yoga and Vedanta as a
means of achieving physical, mental and spiritual
well-being and attaining self-realization.
The Centre in Toronto was established in 1962 and
is part of The International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta
Centres.
Swami Sivananda
(1887 - 1963)
One of the great sages of modern times,
Swami Sivananda is the inspiration behind our
organization. His aim in life was the dissemination of
spiritual knowledge. His motto was:
“Serve, Love, Give, Purify, Meditate,
Realize.”
Swami Vishnudevananda
(1927 - 1993)
Founder of the International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta
Centres, Swami Vishnudevananda was a world
authority on Hatha and Raja Yoga. Swamiji was also
known as the “Flying Swami” for the different peace
missions he pursued around the world. His motto
was:
“Health is wealth, peace of mind is
happiness, Yoga shows the way.”
We are all volunteers: Teachers, staff and helpers.
All of our teachers have completed the Sivananda Yoga Teachers’ Training Course, recognized by
the Yoga Alliance, and have a minimum certification of RYT-200. All teachers, helpers and full-time
staff members in the organization are working on a volunteer basis. Karma Yoga (selfless service) is
acknowledged as a means to inner purification, elimination of the ego and spiritual growth. All talents
are welcome. If you have some time and energy to spare, please let us know. By becoming a member

help maintain a healthy body but also how yogic
philosophy, applied in daily life, can help maintain a
peaceful mind and spirit.
Swami Vishnudevananda closely observed the lifestyles and needs of people in the west. He synthesised the ancient wisdom of yoga into five basic principles that could easily be incorporated into
one’s own lifestyle to provide the foundation for
healthy living. It is around these five principles that
our activities are based.
