Said Adam, “I am extremly excited to continue the strong tradition that the Joyce’s have put in place to make the game of tennis fun and engaging through a wide variety of events and activities that foster the clubs vibrant social atmosphere. The NBTC
has always believed in putting the member first, and I’ve been
a witness to that my entire time here. The club has a great set
of employees, from those that you see on a regular basis: front
desk, servers and bussers, membership, tennis events personnel
and court directors, to those behind the scenes that help make
NBTC thrive: maintenance, accounting, kitchen staff, court washers and more. We probably have the best set of pros in California, and one of the most successful Junior Tennis and Swim
Programs as well. Our facility is unmatched, but even more importantly is our membership base, who are some of the friendliest folk around and who consistently take new members under
their wings. I can’t wait to be MORE involved and extend my
knowledge and passion towards the club I proudly call home. “

Our Marlin’s Spring Swim
Team will start on Monday, March
30th! I’d like to welcome Coach
Billy and Abby who will be helping
me run the program on Mondays
and Wednesdays and will once again
be offering private swim lessons
throughout the week and on select
times during the weekends. For
questions relating to any swim
program, email me at swim@
nbtctennis.com.
The Spring program will
consist on building endurance while
perfecting proper stroke techniques,
as well as practicing turns, starts,
and finishes. This is a great way to
get a “jump start” in training before
summer and to keep your child in
shape until Jr. Guards. Remember,
we don't want any of our kids to stop
swimming after passing the Jr. Guard
test, either! My suggestion is to keep
your kids in the water at least once a
4.5
week to make sure
alldivision
the hard work
pays off. For the Spring Swim Team,
drop-In's will be available, so feel free
to pop in anytime you can make it.
If you have any questions
regarding swim team, or private
lessons, please don't hesitate to
contact me at [email protected].
I look forward to seeing my favorite
families and kids out at the pool!

NBTC was home to 5 UCI Men’s Tennis
Team Matches in February and March and
boasted a 4-1 record! UCI beat UC Santa
Barbara 4-3 in February in probably the
most thrilling of all the matches. The final
match of the day featured an incredible
display on court 3 with both competitors
cramping in the final set. In March action,
UCI beat Northern Arizona 7-0 on March
1st, narrowly lost to Florida Gulf Coast 3-4,
had an impressive victory against UCSD 5-2
and took down Air Force and Army perfect
7-0 team victories each day. UCI takes a 10
game match winning streak into April, and
is 16-9 overall. We wish them the very best
of luck as they continue their play leading
up to Big West Championship in late April.
Good luck Eaters!

More than 90% of dips in our performance are
caused by timing
issues. We’re suddenly meeting the
ball a little late or
a little early. The
best way to cure
Rob Prendergast
this is to pay strict
attention to your eyes making solid contact
with the ball all the way into your strings.
$60/hour
F O R
Most coaches stress that you should see the
714-615-9301
ball impact your strings and then keep focused on that impact point for a tick afterward. This makes some people uncomfortable
because most of us want to keep an eye on
our sneaky partner. This is the best quick fix
in the book. Watching the ball intently goes
a long ways toward improving concentration and timing. Let everything else go. Forget about the score, the shot, the point. Let
your muscle memory take over, clear your
mind, and watch that ball! This will generally
lift the level of your whole game immediately.
And it works for every shot in your arsenal.

“We are very excited to have Reese join our Horned

Second – and with regard to the
aforementioned item, during
the month of April, we are allowing each person on the ladder
to make a challenge as HIGH as
they want. For instance, if you
are sitting at #32 on the ladder,
and you think you can beat #5 on
the ladder, go ahead and take a
shot and challenge that person.
The goal is to allow members the
chance to position themselves
(in one quick match) where they
think their skill will allow. So, pick
up that phone, or click on that
computer and make a challenge.
Today, we are going to look at the number
one fix for those common problems in tennis.
TCU men’s tennis head coach
David Roditi announced the
signing of five-start recruit
Reese Stalder of Costa Mesa,
Calif., to a National Letter of
Intent in November 2014.
Many of you know Reese
as he’s played at the NBTC

G R A P H I C
Now, with the first quarter of 2015
in the rear view mirror, and with
singles play heating up with the
weather, I would like to announce
a couple of items concerning the
ladder, including adjustments that
will allow for all players to be positioned at their proper level, allowing them to compete against
the players closest to their level.
istration, I will be moving you
down to the bottom of your respective division. However, as I
am a fair guy, if you see that you
were moved down but are insistent that you will be playing in
the next few weeks, I will move
you back! Players on the ladder
can only challenge 5 spots up, so
if you are not playing, you make
it difficult for someone to move
up and past you on the ladder.

The 6th Annual Harper for Kids Tennis Pro-Am was held on Saturday,
March 28th here at the Newport Beach Tennis Club. The Harper
for Kids foundation would like to thank all of the pros & ams who
participated and to Scott Davis, who runs the event every day and
does such a good job at it.
Stalder has been the three-time MVP at Newport
Harbor and the No. 1 singles player his first three
years of high school. Stalder was a quarterfinalist
in the CIF Southern Section Individual tournament
and finished runner-up in the Sunset League in his
junior year. Stalder finished with a 43-3 record in
the regular season and helped his team finish third
in their league and advance to the CIF Southern
Section Division 1 playoffs.
In the Summer of 2014, Stalder won the 80th Annual Harper Junior Tournament and reached the
finals of the Southern California Junior Sectionals.
Stalder was in the consolation finals of the USTA
National Selection Tournament in October and
partnered up to win the doubles draw. In the summer of 2013, Stalder paired with Henry Gordon to
place third at the USTA Junior National Hard Court
Championships.
M O R E
March was an exciting month for
singles play at The Newport Beach
Tennis Club.
The NBTC Singles
Championships was well attended and supremely fought out,
and I would like to thank all who
played. It was clear to me that the
members who come out regularly
on Monday Nights to hone their
singles skills faired very, very well.
And with that; sincere “props” to
the winners of all divisions! For
the Women, congratulations
to MINAKO SHINOHARA (3.5),
TARA TUNG (4.0), LY NGUYEN (4.5)
and ALYSSA TONELLI (5.0) and to
the Men’s Champs Larry Lerner (3.5), Nate Small (4.0), Sammy Vergara (4.5), Dave Carter
(5.0), Steve Spriet (5.5) and Stephen Wiechert (Open) Thank
you to all members for playing and
supporting the event, and let’s
keep up the singles play this year!
It happens to all of us and at the worst of
times. When we least expect it, our tennis games just goes to pot. Just suddenly,
your prized forehand is a worthless turkey.
Your already poor-but-consistent backhand is now heading to the back fence faster
than the speed of light and your serve is so
awry that children weep at the sight of it.
