It is intended that the master plan will provide a blueprint for the future of NBTC. Now that we are wrapping up work in the dining room, we’ll turn our attention to other pressing improvements. Among the priorities in the next 6 months is re-plastering the pool, tree artwork for the dining room, a new dining room lighting fixture, gym face-lift, and the replacing of the downstairs carpet. Thank you to NBTC member Christian Warner who spearheaded the project expertly. His attention to detail, expertise and manpower were paramount to the success of the project. It was a labor of love, and the results really speak for themselves. RATING CLINIC (FIRST FRIDAY OF EVERY MONTH) November 6th @ 6pm (free) Sign up with [email protected] RESTAURANT October saw NBTC add a grass fed beef option to the menu. As of the end of October, over 50 grass fed beef patties have been sold. Thank you specifically to NBTC member John Draper, for his enthusiasm and relentless pursuit to get this option on the menu. Stay tuned, because we have plans to offer additional healthy options on our menu, including fresh cold pressed juice containing organic ingredients. But, did you hear? NBTC now offers lattés, cappuccinos and espressos, brewed fresh by our newly appointed and multi-talented bartender Baristas. We’ll be more than happy to make up a fresh cup of your favorite coffee drink, anytime. PRESSRELEASE EVENTS I encourage all members to take the opportunity to enjoy the many chances to play tennis in the coming weeks. In addition to the events outlined here in our newsletter, stay tuned to your email for even more fun tennis activities planned. I am happy to report that during our 2015 Calcutta, not only did we have a fun, competitive and strong contest, we were also able to raise nearly $2,000 for Second Harvest, an Orange County Food Bank dedicated to alleviating hunger with food drives, food rescue, harvesting and volunteering in the homeless community. Congratulations to the winning teams, and to the special Captains of the Calcutta award which went to Jenna Taylor and Bonnie Nolan of Team Christmas. Great job! Have a suggestion you think would really benefit the club? We’d love to hear from you! Simply email suggestions@ nbtennisclub.com and we’ll get right back to you! The Group had humble beginnings. Several years ago, we started on courts 10 and 11. The group came together because many 4.0 and 4.5 players wanted to start earlier in the day and play longer. Our first The Second Annual founder was Brent Raneck who led the Group and created a Newport great King of the Hill format. In short, its the first to 5 with no Book Fair took place ad scoring. Winners would at advance and losers would go down and split. This kept things very lively. Brent Ranek, handed the Group to Eric Crook who moved the group to three courts: 10, 11 and 12. Eventually, more and more players wanted to play and I took the group to courts 1-4 where it stands today. We are now in our Beach the Newport Beach Tennis Club on Sunday, October 4th. Rain threatened but held off, and the Book Fair opened to clear skies and cooler (for a change!) weather. Twenty-nine authors were present to discuss and sign a total of 65 different books, ranging from children’s books, to fiction and non-fiction, to poetry and health related topics. In addition, Chisme Chick, a local woman-owned business, was present with a display of hand-made jewelry and art objects with a literaturerelated theme. We gave a proper send-off to Jill Purcell and Jeff Rogers with a live performance by the Hodaddies and a huge gathering of members. NBTC wishes them all the best and we’ll miss the both of you. NBTC is pleased to announce the hiring of long time NBTC member Lori Contant to work as our front desk receptionist. Said Lori, “I’m so excited about my new job at NBTC. NBTC is like my home away from home. In fact, my first job after graduating from Newport Harbor in 1974 was at the NBTC Day Care Center. I thank the club for the opportunity and am excited for my future here.” third year and we have kept the original format to everyone’s approval. The final team standing on Court 1 gets their picture taken with the Group Trophy now. If one team starts to dominate and keeps returning to defend, I go to the ringer pool and bounce them out! Ringers in the past have included John Michael, Peter Finch, Gary Sequeira, Rob Montgomery, Vid Martinez, Brett Gregor, Dave Watson, Mark Dr. Lauchlan Chambers Orthopedic Surgeon Competitive tennis player and fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine and complex knee and shoulder surgery. Please call (714) 850 7300 to schedule a consultation Hybskmann, our new GM, Adam Hoover and a host of upper players who lend their skills willingly to bounce returning Kings off Center Court. I want to thank the NBTC Court Directors who have helped the Group in a huge way. If you’d like to play, simply email the court directors and we’ll get you involved. Thank you! - Fred Wilgram 8 Rob Montgomery c - 949.280.6362 [email protected] calDRE# 01110479 arborrealestate.com 9 2015 FALL CALCUTTA HOLIDAY TEAMS: OCTOBER 17 - 18 Congratulations to Teams Cinco De Mayo, Halloween and Mardi Gras for finishing in 1st, 2nd and 3rd place respectively in our Fall 2015 Calcutta. The theme this year was “Holidays” and the decorations and enthusiasm was off the charts. Thank you to all the members who played, to all the captains for their support and a special shout-out to Jenna Taylor/Bonnie Nolan for winning the “Captain of the Calcutta” award! In other tennis news, we have an exciting month of November full of great tennis action. Don’t miss the Turkey Shoot on November 21st, which is a one-day mixed doubles tournament. To sign up for any tournament or mixer, please email [email protected] 10 11 HALLOWEEN COSTUME PARTY: OCTOBER 31ST OKTOBERFEST Thank You to all the members who joined us for OktoberFest and our annual Halloween Costume Party! 12 13 LADIES NEWS LADIES LEAGUES REPORT - by Jeannine Sandling Now that November is here, we can look forward to some cooler temperatures. What a relief it will be on the courts after enduring 90 degree conditions. Most of our ladies teams have surged forward to promising results. One notable team that has vastly improved since last season is the Pacific Sun Senior 3 ladies team. This team finished at the bottom last time around and is now right in the middle of their division. Way to go ladies! Also, I would like to thank Anne Satterfield for being this team’s leading force. There are two of NBTC’s Pacific Sun teams that are strutting their stuff in 1st place. The B3-1 and the D3 teams. Both of these teams work very diligently to be at the top of their game. Michele Mola heads up the B3-1 ladies as their new captain and is doing a fantastic job. Kelly Christopherson is also a new captain leading the D3 team. A huge thank you goes to both of these gals for representing their respective teams and NBTC so well. The clubs four Hill and Canyon teams are also showing some great results. Not only do these teams have great starting lineups, they have a good amount of depth and talent on the substitution rosters as well. This league allows added subs throughout the playing season, so if you are a new member and wish to be included on the roster, please contact me. We will be expanding league play with the addition of a Hill and Dale team next season. Hill and Dale is designed for the 3.0 – 3.5 USTA ranked player. You cannot play higher than the D level in Pacific Sun to participate. If this sounds like a team you would like to play on, the sign up period will take place in the Spring. You can contact me by email [email protected] MEMBERS: AQUA AEROBICS SCHEDULE Classes are M/W/F/SA @ 9-10am. Members of NBTC are $5 per class OR $25 per month unlimited. Equipment: aqua buoys and belt are recommended but not required. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to call Michele Schones at 714-376-1382 14 SINGLES LADDER ADVERTISERS UPCOMING EVENTS Yes, Summer is in the rearview mirror and Halloween is upon us and the “Dog Days of Dreary Weather” are lurking somewhere around the corner, but that doesn’t mean we can’t begin the process of reviewing our “scary” singles habits, and begin a renewal! It’s about that time to sit down with a pad and pencil and let honesty pave the way by writing down (did I mention honesty?) our strengths and weaknesses from 2015, and from that list - jot down our singles goals for 2016. Double faulting too much? Bring a friend and an iPhone to the court and video your motion and toss. Then review your motion against the YouTube video of a professional tennis player. Learn something? Too many unforced errors? Buy a friend a beer, and have them chart some matches, have a tally, and make sure the UE are going down and you are forcing the point on your opponent more often. But again, do something! Don’t just keep showing up and expecting things to change unless you make the effort. It is within all of us to get better! (And if you can’t find a friend to chart your match, I will gladly chart your match for the mere price of a pint of Estrella). As far as our Monday Night Performances, the month of October witnessed 27 ladder matches, and amazingly not ONE set going went to a tie-breaker. Wow! How’s that possible??? Even more amazing, there were only 2 of 27 matches that even pushed to a 3rd set/tiebreaker. Players, time to push harder and not let your opponent get back to the bar so fast!! The OCTOBER SINGLES IRONMAN AWARD goes to Geoff Jou. Geoff played 4 tough singles matches in October, and racked up a 3-1 record. If you haven’t seen Geoff play, he is #27 on the “A” Division ladder, and a player to watch. He has 100% raw potential and just needs to log hours on the court. An IRON MAN Honorable Mention goes to “perennial Iron Man” Dan Rodrigues. Dan also played 4 matches in October. I think Dan has played more singles matches in 2015 than anyone at the club, and his blazing forehand is living proof of that commitment. It’s always nice to see Top Guns Stephen Wiechert, Tyler Jackson and Rian Rifkin back on the courts. I think they’ve been ducking Monday Night Singles to protect their ladder positions, which is just my theory. Answer on back Club Members - If you haven’t come out yet for singles on Monday Night @ 7pm, be brave and give it a shot! I will get you a fun match!
