It is definitely the peak of summer. It is hard to believe that the students will be returning to school in a matter of weeks. The time is flying by. Well, I am sure we have all done our share of celebrating thus far this summer, but there is still more to come, before the season ends. Before I delve into the coming events, let me give a big thank you to a few groups of people that helped us have a great Independence Day celebration. I would like to thank the Holiday Shores Ski Club for working hard and putting together an awesome performance for us. I would like to thank the Holiday Shores Volunteer Fire Department for being on hand during both the ski show and the fireworks, to give us a hand, if a medical or fire situation had occurred. I would like to thank J&M Displays for coming out and giving us a rocking fireworks show to cap off the day. Last but not least, I would like to the members of Holiday Shore and their guests for working with us to make this another safe holiday for all to enjoy. As can be expected, we had a few bobbles along the way. We had an accident during the big ski practice, but procedure was followed and the matter was safely taken care of. We had a few boaters not comply with our ski zone restriction and north/south navigation route, which caused some delays during the show. Then there was the fellow who felt it was ok to allow an adult passenger and a young child sit out in front of the safety rails of his pontoon, with their feet in the water, as he scooted down the lake. Despite these issues, all in all, it was a safe and uneventful holiday celebration. Well up next is Summer Jam. It is sure to be fun filled time of music and family oriented activities. It is open to all members in good standing and their guests. Whether one attends by land or by water, he or she is sure to have a good time. The month of August ushers in the return of school busses and crowded bus stops. As always, I ask members to use caution during the mornings and afternoons, while navigating the community. If a hazardous situation arises, please don’t hesitate to contact the PS phone at 618-531-7923. Summer Jam is approaching rapidly and a no wake area will be put in place totally across the lake n the vicinity of the Clubhouse. Traverse through this area will be no wake from buoy to buoy. These are all exceptions to our instruments and we know that some may not agree but please understand our focus is on the safety of our members and we will always error on the side of safety. Considering safety we have a Public Safety staff that does their best to enforce our instruments and orders of the day like what was discussed above. I do expect when Public Safety provides direction the member will follow this direction. On numerous occasions we are faced with members indicating they do not have to listen to them and they continue on against this direction. This causes us a great difficulty because if the offending member continues and causes an accident and we did not stop them as an official of the Association we are liable. We have recourse for all members if they feel they have been wronged and if we are wrong we will admit it and correct the problem. Over the 4th of July weekend we received 6 inches of rain, our lake crested at 10 inches over full pool, we experienced a no wake period and were back in a wake situation prior to our ski show on Monday. The ski show was again a tremendous success and the fantastic talent displayed by the youth of this community is a product of a tremendous work ethic, many hours of practice and the mentorship and support of the club as a whole. This club provides a great service to the community and your efforts are certainly appreciated. Our lake was saturated with watercraft this weekend and for the most part everyone was operating their craft in a safe and courteous manner; however, setting on the front of an underway pontoon boat with your feet in the water and a child on your lap is setting you up for a catastrophic event with the propeller. This is one of the worst offenses we continue to experience and one we will not permit to go on. During the Ski Show we keep the area inside of the 75 foot markers open to permit watercraft to traverse North and South. To keep this area open we do not permit watercraft to stop or anchor in this area. Our philosophy is simply the traffic lane will become clogged with stopped and by Glenn watercraft Dalton and not permit a safe anchored July 2013 without impacting the safety of the traverse ski show. When a member is having a party Our lake is in excellent at theirwith lakeside home with a band and it is condition great water at a choke a wake area we do quality, currentlypoint at full within pool andafisheryequaledbyfew not permit watercraft to stop or anchor in the lakes the the Midwest. Tips To Get Ready For Back-To-School By Cynthia Ewer, Author of Cut the Clutter: A Simple Organization Plan for a Clean and Tidy Home Gather your papers School entry may require documentation from immunization records to report cards from the previous school year. Athletes need proof of medical examination. A little preparation can prevent frantic last-minute searches for a birth certificate or registration confirmation. Call your child’s school or check the school district Web site beforehand to find out what paperwork will be required--then find it! You won’t be sorry come registration day. Take aim on morning madness How are school mornings in your home? Crazed and chaotic, or calm and cheerful? Plan ahead to send your schoolchildren--and yourself!--out the door in a happy frame of mind. Each evening, think ahead to the following morning; where can you lighten the load? Set the breakfast table as you clear the dinner dishes, and make sure breakfast foods are easy to reach. Lay out children’s clothing the night before. Scan backpacks or launch pad spaces for missing homework, projects or library books. Make sure musical instruments or sports bags are packed and ready to go. Do “bathroom wars” break out daily among the small fry? Multi-child households may need a bathroom schedule so that everyone gets equal time before the mirror. What do you do about books and papers, lunch money and permission slips? Practice the Launch Pad concept! By creating a dedicated space for every family member, a Launch Pad gets the family out the door in record time--and organized. Make a practice run How will children get to school? The first day of school is no time to find out it takes ten minutes--not five--to walk to the nearest bus stop! Before school begins, make a practice run to get children to the school on time. If they’ll walk, help them learn the route they’ll take and note the needed time. Car-pooling? Make sure the dry run accounts for early-morning traffic! Bus riders will need to be familiar with the location of the bus stop; print and post the bus schedule to prevent a missed bus. Spiff up household systems A new school year quickens the tempo of family life. Sports activities, music lessons, church programs and volunteer commitments tap parental time and put new mileage on the mini-van. Get organized! Spiff up your household systems to meet autumn’s faster pace: Clean house ... fast! Take a stab at speed cleaning and whip through household chores in record time. Cut time in the kitchen: create a menu plan and never again wonder “What’s for dinner?” Streamline dinner preparations. Try a session of freezer cooking to stock the freezer with prepared entrees for stress-free dinner on sports night. Conquer the paper pile-up. Set up a basic home filing system to track school paperwork, volunteer activities and household planning Happy New School Year! Time to swing into a new school year--from an organized home. 13 August 2016 Holiday TIMES - www.holidayshores.us 4 MAN Tiki Bar Bass Club Location: Date: Fee: Package Includes: Teams that are registered and paid by August 1 will be entered for a drawing. Boating Hours: Boating on Holiday and Su Twan Lakes is permitted 24 hours a day, but watercraft are restricted to No-Wake speeds from sunset to sunrise. Noise Level Limit: No watercraft may be operated on Holiday or Su Twan Lakes in a manner that exceeds a noise level of 75 decibels. This restriction includes inboard/outboard motors, stereos, etc. Restricted Areas: No watercraft shall be operated in any manner except prescribed for areas marked No-Wake, Swimming Area, etc. Holiday Lake is considered No-Wake when the lake level reaches 9” above full pool and 16” below full pool. Reckless – No craft shall be operated in a manner that willfully and wantonly puts life, limb, or property of another person in danger. This restriction applies to actions such as weaving through traffic, jumping wake when visibility is obstructed, following too close to skiers, playing ‘chicken,’ or passing another craft in a manner that produces a hazardous wake/wash. This restriction also applies to the misuse of water skis, wake boards, or other devices. Water Skiing: Water skiers, wake boarders, tubers, etc. may not be towed without at least 2 competent persons in the tow boat, to observe the individual(s) being towed and provide assistance if distressed/injured. Distance: Operators must keep a safe and reasonable distance between their craft and other lake users, such as swimmers, downed skiers, fishermen, etc. They must also maintain a distance of 75ft from shore when making a wake. Seventy-Five (75) foot markers have been replaced with new, larger white/blue buoys. Orange Flag: Operators are required to display a bright orange flag on their vessel any time they have a skier, tuber, wake boarder, etc. in the water. The flag must be a 12 inch by 12 inch square and affixed to the highest point of the craft, such as a ski tower or pontoon top. Racing: Racing of any watercraft on Holiday or Su Twan Lakes is prohibited. Power Turns: Power Turns (also referred to as 180s or 360s) are permitted as long as the following criteria are met: 1.) Craft is not unreasonably close to another craft, causing it to swerve or take evasive action to avoid a collision. 2.) Not done in a manner that causes the driver and/or passengers to be thrown from the craft. 3.) Not done in a cove or in a manner which causes a nuisance to another member. Engine Cut-off: All watercraft (prop-driven and PWC’s) equipped with an engine cut-off device may not be operated unless the device is properly functioning and its lanyard is securely attached to the driver. Behavior towards Security Obnoxious or threatening behavior to Security personnel shall not be tolerated. 17 August 2016 Holiday TIMES - www.holidayshores.us Look for the June and July Board of Directors Meeting Minutes in the September Issue of the Holiday Times. Pokémon Go, the mobile game that's pulling kids ... and countless other enthusiasts ... outside this summer, has a lot going for it. The game, which involves hunting for virtual Pokémon characters hidden in real locations, requires players to explore their communities and meet new people. But, just like with anything, there always are a few risks. While most of the app's fans are having a blast, there are more than a few reports of Pokémon Go-related car accidents, injuries and crime. If your kids can't get enough of the game, here are some things to know. Play with parents and friends: Any kid on the internet should know to never share personal information with somebody they met online. But Pokémon Go is different since players actually meet each other in real life, often in unfamiliar settings. And, teamwork is part of the game. So, in many cases, players will connect with strangers in actual locations. Of course, most of the people that kids will meet up with are other enthusiastic Pokémon Go fans, but players of all ages need to be aware that these strangers might not have their best interests in mind. It's always best to play with a group that includes friends and a responsible adult, who can keep an eye on anybody they encounter. Don't forget to look up: You need to be looking at your phone to play. But don't get too caught up in that virtual reality as you're actually wandering around the real world. Play often takes place in busy areas like downtown Raleigh or local malls. Be sure that you and your kids are looking up from time to time so you don't walk out into traffic or into a tree or bump into a gaggle of other people playing Pokémon Go. Never drive and play: If you have teen drivers who are caught up in the rage, be sure to hammer home the rule that they should never be texting, playing or even holding their phone and driving at the same time. Six out of 10 teen crashes involve driver distraction ... and that includes being distracted by mobile games like Pokémon Go. It's not all free: It's free to download the app to your phone, but in-app purchases range in price between 99 cents and $99.99. And people are buying stuff. According to Market Watch, in less than 24 hours, the game was the most downloaded and top grossing app in the United States, Australia and New Zealand. Be sure you have safeguards in place and limits set so your kids don't break the bank with Pokémon Go purchases. Take a break: The game can be addictive. Make sure your kids are taking breaks from those tiny screens and enjoying other summer activities. The above photo of Gate H reflects the work of Garden Club members Nan Adams and Jan Tolliver. The interesting thing to note about this garden is its combination of native plants and more traditional plants. Nan and Jan are native plant enthusiasts and want to show how well these plants can work in combination with non-native plants. They are assisted in maintaining this garden by Nan’s husband, Neil, who is also passionate about native plants. Our particular interest in featuring Gate H this month is to also call attention to Garden’s Club’s Native Plant Experiment at the north end of the lake on Biscay Drive. One plot was planted in June and another is being prepared for planting in September. Please refer elsewhere in this issue of the Holiday Times for a special page devoted to this Native Plant Project. We’re looking for community volunteers to assist us in our goal to fully develop the slope at the north end of the lake into a beautifully landscaped area of native plants. We envision this as a multi-year project. More details as well as photos and contact information are available on this additional page. Our August meeting is scheduled on Monday, August 15, 7:00pm, at the clubhouse. Our speaker is Ray Chapman, Beekeeper. His comments will focus on why bees are important pollinators, and he will also provide general information on beekeeping. Visitors are welcome and encouraged to attend our meetings. In addition, we will vote on the “Flower of the Year Award”. All members are asked to bring this year’s competition plant – Blue My Mind. We look forward to seeing a beautiful display of our individual gardening efforts. Each year Garden Club purchases the competition plant for each member to cultivate. We purchase the plants from La Bella Fiori Garden Center, the nursery resource for the plants that are offered each year at our Plant Sale. The owner of the nursery, Abby Dillon, gives us growing hints for the particular plant and each of us takes it from there. The votes are tallied and the winner is kept a secret until our annual Guest and Awards Meeting and Dinner held in October, when the plant winner is announced. Garden Tip for August: Annuals may appear leggy and worn now. These can be cut back hard and fertilized to produce a new flush of blooms. *** Please continue to watch the Holiday Times for Garden Club news and details of our meetings. Guests are welcome and encouraged to attend any of our meetings. We meet on the third Monday of each month at 7:00pm, unless otherwise stated. There is no meeting in January. 19 August 2016 Holiday TIMES - www.holidayshores.us HOLIDAY SHORES GARDEN CLUB NATIVE PLANT PROJECT-North End of Lake-Biscay Drive Are you interested in learning more about native plants and how they benefit our environment? Garden Club is seeking community volunteers to assist us with our Native Plant Experiment. Phase One (the first plot) was planted in June. Phase Two (the second plot) is being prepared now and will be ready for planting in September. We need YOU to sign up to work with us on this project to beautify the north end of the lake. Enjoy the photos on this page from the first plot and work with us in our next planting. Do you want to see more butterflies, songbirds and pollinators? Do you wish your vegetable garden were producing a better yield? The Holiday Shores Garden Club believes it has the answer…. MORE NATIVE PLANTS. With a better food supply for beneficial insects, the birds will come and our flowers and vegetables will be pollinated. We are excited to announce that Gene Sands, an Alton native plant enthusiast, is donating 100 plants to the Garden Club for the next planting. They will be ready to plant in September. Native Coreopsis Native Phlox Native Plant Garden Native Purple Coneflower Join with us in planting the slope at the silt pond and help plant, weed and maintain a second 300 square feet plot. With volunteers from the community, the task will be easy and the rewards great. We envision adding plots each year until the slope is filled with native plants. You will see flowers in bloom, butterflies and bees in abundance, and enjoy a colorful landscape. Our planting schedule for Phase Two (the second plot) is Wednesday, September 14 at 6:30pm and Saturday, September 17 at 9am. Please consider adding your name to our list of community volunteers for this project. This is also an opportunity for a family to work together on a project to help our environment. We will develop our volunteer list and communicate with you as a group as we move through this process. We had 25 teams to compete this year for the crown and for the chance at the $20,000.00 big bass award. Day one we was treated with a great breakfast at 5:00 am by Dawn Schmitt, Valerie Dietzman and Rene Horn and they also served on Sunday. Thanks ladies, that was a great way to start the fishing days. Fishing was pretty good for most of the teams, some had a hard time finding keeper size bass. Day one weigh in was at 2pm and as the fisherman came into the cove they could see the big crowd gathered at Lakeside Marina. Big Bass of day one was John Pretti with a 6.08 lbs. bass, second big bass was 5.37 caught by Paul Worthey. With day one weights in the books, leaders were Kevin Suttles & Paul Worthey with 15.61 lbs. 2nd Place was the team of Shannon Scheffel & Greg Frazier with 13.63 lbs and holding 3rd place were two SIUE college fishermen, Dan Calcaterra & Zach Hartnagle with 13.15 lbs. Nor far behind in 4th place was father and son team Matt & Austin Ressler with 12.73 lbs. Rounding out the top 5 was Chris Steele & Shaun Diltz with 12.65 lbs. Day two as always was a little tougher, some teams made the adjustment while others teams fell short. Day one leader Suttles & Worthey fell to 12th place at the end of the day. 1st Place and Champions of The Bank of Edwardsville Classic was Shannon Scheffel & Greg Frazier with a two day total of 28.24 lbs. 2nd Place was the Team of Mike Jennings & Willie McArtor with 23.81lbs. 3rd went to team of John Pretti & Andy Paschedag with 23.75 lbs. 4th place was Todd Schmidt & Scott Gower whose two day total was 22.75 lbs. 5th place went to Freddy & Richie Mullin with 21.65 lbs. John Pretti with a 6.08 lbs. had the big bass of the tournament and the chance for the 20,000.00. John had to match the last two numbers to win, he need 08 and when the number was revealed it was 83. No big winner this year, but it has been won before and we will all try again next year! We would like to thank our sponsors of the tournament. Big thanks to all for supporting the Tiki bar Bass Club which makes it possible for us to contribute back to the lake. We have raised over $21,000 to purchase large and small mouth bass to put in the lake. On a sad note we recently lost a member of the bass club and long time member of Holiday Shores. Gary Horn passed away on July 4th. Gary was on the lake pretty much every day in his little white boat seeing what he could catch that day. Gary fished tournaments all over the midwest and had won plenty of his share. Gary fished the Sunday tournaments here before there was a bass club. Gary & Joe Gulash were the Champions at last years The Bank of Edwardsville Classic. Gary you will always be a champion here at Holiday Shores and will be missed by many. RIP good friend, till we meet again. Don’t Forget the Tiki Bar Bass Club Golf Scramble August 20th at Fox Creek, 1:30 Shotgun Start. Questions, comments or topics for future columns can be sent to [email protected]) One of the most commonly asked questions at new puppy/kitten examination is: “Should I have my pet spayed/neutered and at what age should this be done?” This has been a topic of much debate within the veterinary profession the last 2 years as new information is made available. The age old standby recommendation has been to perform surgery at 5-6 months of age after juvenile vaccinations have been completed, and this recommendation still holds true for our feline friends at this time. However, when pet populations in Europe, where spay/neuter is uncommon, were compared to pet population in the U.S, some differences were noted. The foremost issue was the rate of orthopedic injuries in male dogs in the U.S was higher than reported in Europe. Further studies are now suggesting that neutering large breed (greater than 50lb) dogs prior to growth plate closure may change the way the growth plate develops. This link is thought to potentially increase the pet’s risk of cranial cruciate ligament (CCL aka ACL in people) pathology (torn ligament within the knee). This information is far from conclusive at this time, but is suggestive enough to be a consideration. It is important to note that at this time, there appear to be no increased health risks associated with neutering past growth plate closure, which for most dogs is around 12-16 months of age. In contrast, for female dogs, the rate of orthopedic injury does not appear to be as prevalent. It is still ideal to spay prior to the first heat cycle (<6 months) as the decreased risks of mammary cancer, incontinence, heat associated uterine pathology, and complication rate of surgery associated with older pets far outweighs the current information on risk of future orthopedic concerns. Remember, it is still part of responsible pet ownership to spay/neuter non-breeding pets. This is important to help reduce the number of unwanted and homeless pets and decrease the number of unwanted heritable traits ( ie., hip/elbow dysplasia, allergies, etc.) passed on to future pets and owners. Itchy pets are by far the most common presenting complaint in general veterinary practice. Although some pets can have quite complicated cases, I wanted to shed some light on the 80-90% of cases that are routinely seen and ways to prevent costly dermatology work ups. In general, the majority of pets itch for 2 reasons: allergies or infection. Allergic causes can be summed up to flea bite allergy, environmental/pollen based allergy (atopy), or food allergy. Many pets may be afflicted with all three types of allergies, but of allergy causes, 80% of cases will be flea bite or pollen based causes as the predominant factor for itch. In many cases, a primary allergy will set up the appropriate conditions for a secondary infection. In general, most infections can be cause by, bacteria, yeast, mites. These should be screened for at a veterinary appointment by a skin scraping or cytology as treatments vary. Further allergy work up cannot be pursued until appropriate flea control has been initiated for all indoor pets as well as underlying infection(s) treated. Remember, fleas live where pets live and control is about prevention, as it may take up to 6 months to eradicate after adult fleas are noted on a pet. For seasonal, pollen based allergies, Benadryl can be effective in milder cases (1mg per lb). However, once hair is missing and skin is inflamed, veterinary consultation is recommended as improvement is unlikely without the aid of prescription medications.
