Life insurance should reflect life — an
opportunity with countless options to
pursue and protect your dreams. But
dreams can change over a lifetime, and
today’s financial needs can be vastly
different than tomorrow’s. Big or small,
your dreams matter, and protecting
them now is more important than ever.

Thoughts from the President
Dear Members,
By the time you receive this issue of the Forum
Magazine, we can only hope that Old Man
Winter is a distant, faded memory!
In 2013, Gleaner Life Insurance Society and its members
experienced a very good year. Jeffrey Patterson, our
chief financial officer, provides you a detailed look at
our 2013 financial results, starting on page 4. We are
pleased to report a solid contribution to our member
surplus and improved operating results as we continue
to move the Society forward for future growth. The
seeds we planted in 2012 and 2013 have indeed grown
into meaningful, positive momentum for the Society.
We enjoyed seeing our Florida arbor members
and other snowbirds at our picnic and spring
training ballgame in early March. You can read
about this year’s highlights on page 9.
Gleaner Life Insurance Society’s Mission for LIFE®
initiative continues in earnest this year with new products,
improved processes, enhanced representative training, new
recruits and, most important, your help to make it happen!
Keep your eyes open in 2014 for information on our
new Terminal Dividend Endorsement. We are filing
this endorsement with the various states we operate in
to formalize our Loyalty Bonus program for members
holding flexible premium universal life and tax-deferred
annuity certificates. The Loyalty Bonus recognizes Gleaner
members who own their certificate for five years or more
with an additional death benefit paid to their beneficiaries.
We know our members and representatives value this
fraternal benefit, which Gleaner has been offering since
the mid-1990s. By adding this endorsement to your
certificate and having the Board of Directors approve
the terminal dividend resolution each year, you can have
even greater assurance of the continuity of this valuable
member benefit, which approached $1 million in 2013.
In March, we also introduced our new Gleaner Life Term
Solutions, which offer affordable term life insurance
coverage for individuals, families and business owners. Our
Gleaner Life Family Term also includes an unbelievable
first-year option to insure your spouse for just $1 per
$100,000 of coverage and all your children for only $1 per
$10,000. Be sure to talk to your Gleaner representative to
make sure you and your loved ones (and your small business)
have the appropriate amount of life insurance protection you
need and they deserve. See page 12 for additional details.
We also have other exciting opportunities for existing
annuity certificate members that will be announced later
in 2014. Keep your eyes and ears open to the possibilities!
The peace of mind that comes with being properly
insured in the event of an untimely death provides
you the solid footing your financial security
plan must have in order to be successful.
Kevin A. Marti
Thank you for all you do for Gleaner and for your
support as a valued member of the Society!
Fraternally,
President and CEO

Gleaner Life Insurance Society
Statements of the Society’s Financial Condition
December 31, 2013
Gleaner Life Insurance Society’s financial condition
exhibited improvement in many areas over the last
year. The Society’s accomplishments in 2013 are
encouraging as we face persistent challenges in today’s
economy, including extraordinarily low interest rates.
Our balance sheet strength provides a stable base for
future successes. We continue to maintain high-quality
investments, secure certificate reserves, and a strong
and growing surplus position. Gleaner’s favorable
financial position gives assurance that we will
uphold the promises in each member’s certificate.
The Society’s assets are $1.417 billion as of Dec. 31,
2013, a slight decrease of $20.4 million from one year
ago. Our conscious effort to manage annuity renewal
premiums on higher minimum guaranteed interest rate
products (our annuity certificates with older issue dates
have minimum guaranteed interest rates of 3.0% and
3.5%) resulted in a 55.4% decline in annuity premium
and a corresponding 1.4% decrease in assets. Annuity
renewal premium limitations were necessary to counteract a
declining interest rate spread between available investment
returns and product crediting rates in a prolonged,
depressed interest rate environment, although increasing
from year-end 2012. Also, we had a reduction in life
insurance premium of 22.9% because of comparisons to
a few large single-premium certificates issued in 2012.
Total member benefit levels remained relatively constant
this year compared with 2012. Benefits paid decreased
$366,000 (0.3%) in 2013. The major changes in benefits
included: 1) annuity surrenders increased $5.9 million;
2) annuity death benefits decreased $2.8 million; and 3)
life insurance death benefits after reinsurance decreased
$3.7 million (primarily because of one large singlepremium whole life insurance death claim in 2012).
Gleaner’s investment portfolio performed well in 2013. Our
investments experienced fewer credit concerns and lower
losses than in 2012. The Society’s diversified investment
portfolio is built on prudent policies and practices.
Gleaner’s conservative philosophy and professional
management supply a solid foundation for our investments.
The Society’s bond portfolio is 98.6% investmentgrade quality and represents 96% of our investments.
We have an overall bond portfolio rating of “A+” as of
Dec. 31, 2013. Mortgage loans, certificate loans, cash
4
Protecting families through life insurance since 1894.
and short-term investments, and real estate comprise
the remaining portions of our investment portfolio.
Gleaner does not own any common or preferred
stocks, derivatives, or non-conventional
investments. Also, the Society is proud to report
it continues to operate with zero debt.
Gleaner’s Dec. 31, 2013, surplus position stands at $83.1
million, a $2.3 million increase from year-end 2012. The
Society’s surplus ratio (amount of assets for each $100 of
liabilities) of $106.23 remains above the average of the
25 largest life insurance companies. Our surplus grew
primarily from a net income gain of $2.1 million. Gleaner’s
2013 net income and growth in surplus increased from
negative positions in 2012. This is mainly a consequence
of our reduction in operating expenses of $3.4 million,
and promising results in our pension plan (frozen in 2012)
because of rising interest rates (reducing plan liabilities)
and favorable investment returns (increasing plan assets).
As of December 2013, our A. M. Best rating was affirmed
at “A-” (Excellent) with a stable outlook. According to
A. M. Best, our current rating continues to be a secure
financial strength rating and is assigned to companies that
have an excellent ability to meet their ongoing insurance
obligations. A. M. Best is the largest and longestestablished company devoted to issuing in-depth reports
and financial strength ratings on insurance organizations.
The Society has demonstrated financial security and a
fraternal spirit for over 119 years. We are pleased with
our ability to sustain a secure and dependable financial
position through all types of economic conditions.
The Society is committed to preserving our members’
trust and confidence. Gleaner will continue to make
responsible decisions in the best interests of our valued
members and the Society’s long-term future.

in Saginaw,
Mich., to
attend the

In December 2012, Joseph received
a bachelor's degree in business
administration with a focus in finance
from Bob Jones. Since then, he's
started the next chapter of his life
in the banking industry in Florida.
6
Even though Joseph has been in the
workforce for over a year now, he
began working toward his career goal
while still in college. In the summer
of 2012, Joseph took an internship
position at PNC Bank in Troy, Mich.
After completing the internship,
Joseph received an offer to join PNC
Bank's Fort Lauderdale, Fla., office.
“I just want to thank Gleaner for
the scholarship I received. Since
Gleaner played such an important
part in my college career, I wanted
to share my college and career
successes with you,” he said.
“It has been a whirlwind since
graduating college in December
2012, moving to Florida from
South Carolina, learning
new job responsibilities and
growing professionally in the
workplace," Joseph said.
Are you a past
scholarship recipient?
His immediate career goal is to
stay in PNC Bank’s Treasury
Management Division.

Letters from members
Dear M rs. Hammersmith,
[Board Chair Suann Hammersmith]
As I look back on what an incredible year 2013 has been
for me, I know I have a lot to be thankful for. I am going
to college, I love my school and I have made so many
friends and learned so much in the short time I have
attended Vanderbilt University. As a pre-med student, I
am excited to be within reach of so much scientific and
medical research here. I would like to thank you and
would be very appreciative if you could convey my thanks
to … all others involved in choosing the recipients of the
Gleaner scholarships. As one of those recipients, I want to
thank you for your generosity. It means the world to me.
It’s nice that you understand that when I’m trying to get a
college education, money is the last thing I want to worry
about. Thank you for reducing this worry. With work,
determination and prayer, I hope to graduate debt-free.
Sincerely,
Faith Whatley

Dear Gleoma Arbor,
On behalf of the students and families at Miller Park
Elementary School, I want to personally and professionally
thank your organization for the opportunity to have 22
of our students participate in the Holiday Shopping Trip.
This fabulous event provided our youngsters with the
chance to celebrate the holiday season by being able to have
breakfast, shop for Christmas presents, wrap them and
enjoy a special lunch! I cannot begin to put into words how
ecstatic our students and their parents were with regard
to this whole experience. This event really and truly made
the holiday season so much brighter for the participants.
Again, we greatly appreciate all of you taking the time
and initiative to serve our outstanding students here at
Miller Park. It is a blessing to have people like you who
go above and beyond to provide a better quality of life for
those in need.

Dear Greater F lint Area Arbor,
As a first timer at a Gleaner’s convention, I was greatly
impressed at the detailed planning and organization of
the convention, but even more impressed by the heretofore
unrealized scope of the Gleaner Society. For being a guest of
the society, my sincere thanks. I truly enjoyed attending …
Also, I’m flattered and grateful to have been so
generously rewarded in past years for my volunteering.
All in all, I am very grateful to have been
introduced to and inducted into such a unique
(to me) and generous organization.
Appreciatively,
Mary Jane Ford

Florida picnic memories
The 25th annual Snowbird Family Picnic officially kicked off Gleaner’s 2014 picnic season. This year, Gleaner
families gathered at Columbus Hall in Sarasota, Fla. The hall provided ample room for food, fun and fellowship!
Gleaner President and CEO Kevin Marti, Vice President of Fraternal Operations Sherry Nino, Fraternal Manager
Michelle Horn and Gleaner board members joined with Florida members during this year’s event. Representatives
from Southeastern Guide Dogs Inc. in Palmetto, Fla., also attended and received a $180 donation from Gleaner.
Gleaner members enjoy fun, food and fellowship at the 25th Annual Snowbird Picnic.
Members enjoy spring training baseball in Florida
Gleaner members assembled at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland, Fla., on Saturday, March 1. The stadium,
or Tiger Town as it is known, has served as the Detroit Tigers’ spring training headquarters since 1966.
Over 155 Gleaner members took advantage of this year’s event and purchased discounted tickets through Gleaner
to watch the Tigers take on the Houston Astros. In addition to seeing a great baseball game, members and guests
received a pregame all-you-can-eat picnic lunch of hot dogs, hamburgers, coleslaw, chips and beverages.

Annuities 101
Are you looking for a way to save more money? Are you
disappointed in the interest rate you are earning on your
bank CD (certificate of deposit) or savings account?
If you answered yes to one or both of those questions, a
fixed annuity might be just the answer. Fixed, deferred
annuities offer many financial advantages, especially
for those saving for retirement or already retired.
What is an annuity?
An annuity is simply a kind of savings plan
that is offered by an insurance company or
fraternal organization like Gleaner.
Gleaner offers fixed, deferred annuities through our
Gleaner Life Foundation Series. Fixed annuities
guarantee that you will earn a minimum interest
rate, 1% for the Foundation products. The taxdeferral element helps you accumulate wealth for
your retirement or long-term financial goals by
postponing paying taxes on interest earnings until a
withdrawal is taken. That allows your money to grow
faster through the power of compounding interest.
What interest rate do I receive?
The interest rates on annuities are set by the insurance
company. Traditionally, annuities offer higher yields
than many financial products offered by banks.
Interest rates on new Gleaner annuities are determined
by the amount of initial premium paid. Currently, higher
interest rates are available for account values above $25,000,
$50,000, $100,000 and $250,000. For current competitive
interest rates, contact your Gleaner representative (listed
on the back cover), or call 800-992-1894 toll-free and
ask to speak with Gleaner’s Agency Department, which
will help you find a Gleaner representative in your area.
Other advantages
Gleaner's Foundation annuities also allow your beneficiary,
in the event of your death, to receive the full account
value of your annuity without going through the expense
and publicity of probate (under current tax law).
A unique benefit offered by annuities is the option to
receive guaranteed income payments for your entire
lifetime through monthly, quarterly or even annual income
checks. This source of lifetime income is a great benefit
to retirees who worry about outliving their savings.
10 Protecting families through life insurance since 1894.
Are there any fees with Gleaner annuities?
There are no annual maintenance fees on Gleaner
annuities. Foundation annuities also allow up to 15%
of the entire value of your annuity certificate to be
withdrawn annually without incurring a surrender
charge. However, if you withdraw more than 15% of
your entire fund value in a single year, you will incur a
surrender charge if the annuity is not out of the surrender
charge period. Gleaner currently offers annuities with
either a six- or nine-year surrender charge period.
What are the other benefits
of a Gleaner annuity?
As a Gleaner member, you are eligible for many
member benefits, including our Loyalty Bonus.
The bonus recognizes our loyal members who have
owned an annuity certificate for more than five
years and rewards them with an additional death
benefit (up to $20,000 per annuity member).**
Gleaner members can also take advantage of our
scholarship opportunities as well as discounted prices on
family activities and outings to ballparks, water parks
and other travel trips. To learn about our complete list
of member benefits, go online to www.gleanerlife.org.
** Pursuant to the Constitution and Bylaws of Gleaner Life
Insurance Society, the Board of Directors reserves the right to
change, modify and/or discontinue any provision pertaining to
these benefits. While the Society does not anticipate such changes
or discontinuance, these benefits cannot be guaranteed.

Gleaner Life Term Solutions bring flexibility to term life coverage
Life insurance should ref lect life — an

opportunity with countless options to pursue
needs can be vastly different than tomorrow’s.
Term life insurance protects both personal and business
needs. By safeguarding your dreams, term life insurance
provides you and your loved ones with coverage when you
need it most. While there is not a savings component to
term life products, lower premiums are often ideal for
people on a budget, young families and business owners.
Many individuals choose term life protection when:
Big or small, your dreams matter, and

and protect your dreams. But dreams can
change over a lifetime, and today’s financial
protecting them now is more important than
ever. That’s why Gleaner Life Term Solutions
provide affordable coverage when you need
it most. Gleaner launched this innovative
line of affordable products in March.
Gleaner Life Term Solutions can be tailored to your
unique needs, both personal and professional. Available
in 15-, 20-, 25- and 30-year periods, Gleaner Life
Term Solutions offer the flexibility to meet your needs
while guaranteeing protection you can rely on. Whether
you’re looking to insure your entire family, protect your
business partners or just provide a little extra security for
your loved ones, Gleaner Life Term Solutions offer the
affordability and flexibility you need in term life insurance.
Gleaner’s new term life solutions offer a breadth of
options to cover your needs. With accelerated death
benefit and optional waiver of premium riders, term
solutions allow provisions for unexpected changes in
health and mortality. In addition, each of the Gleaner
Life Term Solutions offers the option to convert
coverage to permanent cash-value insurance.
Insure your spouse and
children for as little as $1
For the first certificate year, Gleaner Life Family
Term allows you to cover a spouse and children
for less than a penny a day. The other insured
rider provides up to $250,000 of coverage for only
$2.50, while the children’s term life insurance rider
provides up to $50,000 of coverage for only $5*.

Gleaner Life Value Term
Gleaner Life Value Term is a traditional term life
insurance plan. This affordable approach provides
term life coverage guaranteeing security and stability.
Gleaner Life Value Term is the perfect solution for
those looking for an economical way to provide for their
loved ones, those wanting to supplement permanent life
insurance coverage, or those seeking added coverage
for financial obligations like a mortgage or other loans.
With competitive premium amounts, value term keeps
life insurance coverage simple and affordable.
Gleaner Life Duration Term
Gleaner Life Duration Term provides coverage when it’s
needed most with up to four concurrent term certificates
of varying length, which allows premiums to decrease over
time. This “ladder approach” provides higher coverage now
and less when the need decreases. That means a 15-year
certificate may secure your children’s college education, a
20-year certificate may cover your mortgage and a 25-year
certificate may provide added security for your loved ones.
Gleaner Life Succession Term
Gleaner Life Succession Term provides coverage for
multiple business partners with one consolidated
premium payment. The loss of a partner can be difficult,
but succession term provides security to fund buy-sell
agreements, giving you and your business partners
the confidence that funds will be available should
the need arise. Succession term eliminates excess
expenses through the multiple certificate discount,
providing maximum coverage at minimum cost. G

Gleaner Life Family Term
Gleaner Life Family Term treats your household as it
ought to be treated: as one, unified family. By bundling
riders, you can economically protect your spouse or your
children with the simplicity of a single certificate and
premium payment. The other insured rider* provides up to
$250,000 of coverage for your spouse for as little as $2.50
for the first year. The children’s term rider* provides your
children with the gift of guaranteed future insurability
and up to $50,000 of current life insurance protection for
only $5 for the first year*. Both riders allow for conversion
to permanent cash-value insurance. In the event of
divorce, death or disability, your spouse has the option to
exchange the other insured rider for his or her own term
certificate, allowing them to maintain affordable coverage.
*Added cost applies for this benefit. Illustrated premium
rates apply after the first certificate year.

A tour of the Frank Dick Founders Room
Gleaner’s Home Office in Adrian, Mich., is home of
the Frank Dick Founders Room, a small, permanent
exhibit of artifacts from the Society’s 120-year
history. This is a highlight of Home Office tours
when members and guests visit. If you are ever in or
around southern Michigan, feel free to contact Home
Office staff to set up a tour. In the meantime, here
are a few highlights from the Founders Room.
Regalia
These costumes were
used when performing old
rituals from the Book of
Ruth and plays that were
put on for entertainment.
The Founders Room
contains a small wardrobe
of this regalia.
Arbor charters
These original charters were given to each arbor. They contain
the signatures of each arbor's chartering officers and feature the
biblical characters Ruth and Boaz. These charters are displayed
not just in the Founders Room, but throughout the Home Office.
Presidential portraits
Historical publications
The walls of the Founders Room are adorned with
portraits of Gleaner’s presidents. Pictured here is Grant
Slocum (first president and CEO, 1894-1924).
The Founders Room contains a vast library of historical
Gleaner publications from throughout the Society’s history.

Helping to feed
America's hungry
Providing financial protection
and food to Americans in need
Today, over 50 million people in the United States
struggle with hunger. This is roughly 1 in 6 of the
American population, including more than 1 in
5 children.* Hunger is not just an issue in lowincome communities. In fact, people are affected
by hunger in nearly every village, town and city
in every state. From urban areas to rural farm
communities, hunger affects every part of our nation.
When we think of America, we often think of it as
a land of plenty and opportunity, but for millions of
children, hardworking adults and seniors, hunger
is a real problem that is faced nearly every day.
You can make a difference
for your fellow Americans
by joining in Gleaner’s
Mission for LIFE® . For
every friend or family
member you refer through
our Mission for LIFE®
program, Gleaner will donate $10 to a national
food bank. Gleaner will donate money
quarterly for every referral received in 2014.
Not only will you help us feed fellow Americans,
but you will also take the first step toward
guaranteeing that your family and friends are
financially protected through life insurance. As
a faith-based organization, Gleaner believes we
have a responsibility to help provide for those in
need, but we can’t do it alone. By joining together,
we can make a real impact for the ones we love by
helping to provide for their most basic needs.

Gain your
FINANCIAL FRE
Did you know the hardest part of money
management is just getting started?
Once you get the ball moving, it isn’t as
difficult as you might think. The other
misconception is that people feel like
they should tackle all of their money
issues at one time when, in fact, they
should take financial baby steps.
Here are some steps to help you gain your
financial freedom:
Say no to credit cards. The first step in gaining
your financial freedom is to stabilize your debt. It’s nearly
impossible to pay down debt while still using credit
cards. Your first step might be to cut up or cancel all of
your cards. If you decide to use credit cards, make sure
to pay off the balance each month to avoid high interest
rates. Be conscientious of your spending habits and don't
charge more than you can pay off in a single month.
Start saving. Sometimes people make the mistake
of thinking they can’t save until they pay off their debt.
That isn’t true. Even saving a little each week or at the
end of every month will help you get into the habit of
saving. You can save automatically by transferring $25,
$50 or even $100 at the end of each month from your
checking account to your savings account. Remember,
anything is better than nothing, so start slow and begin
making saving a part of your monthly to-do list.
20 Protecting families through life insurance since 1894.
Reduce debt with a proven strategy. Now that
you have said no to future credit card debt, you need to list
all of your debts from largest to smallest. Start slow and
begin paying the minimum payment on all of your debts
except for the one with the smallest balance and highest
interest rate. Pay as much as you can on the smallest
account with the highest interest rate, while paying
the minimum on all the rest of your debts and loans.
Once the smallest debt is paid off, take the money
you were using to pay it off and throw it all at the
next-smallest debt, plus the minimum payment you
have been paying. Follow this pattern for all of your
credit cards or loans to keep building momentum.
Plan for your future. Now that most of your
debt is gone, you should begin thinking about saving
for retirement, your children or grandchildren’s
college education, as well as any future financial
goals, through tax-deferred annuities. Life insurance
becomes significantly important at this stage as
well. Talk to a Gleaner representative to learn what
types of financial solutions are right for you.
Save more. It may take you several months or even
several years, but once your debt (with the exception
of your mortgage) is gone, that is the time to save even
more. You should build a safety net that equals four to six
months’ worth of your income. This savings is essential
to help you stay out of debt in the future and be prepared
for those unexpected expenses, such as new appliances,
a new furnace, car repairs or even a family vacation.
It’s important to note that it’s OK if you need to use
the funds in your savings account. All of us do at one
time or another — that is why the money is there.
However, if you need to use that money, be sure to replace
it as soon as you can. You should strive to maintain
four to six months’ worth of income at all times.
Gleaner can assist you in gaining your
financial freedom. Our life insurance
and annuity solutions can help you
EDOM
Pay off your mortgage early. Did you know that
by paying just $100 more on your principal each month,
you can pay down your mortgage faster? You could also
take advantage of the lower interest rate environment
and refinance your 30-year mortgage to a 10- or 15year mortgage. Another simple way to pay down your
mortgage debt is by making biweekly payments instead
of monthly installments. This method produces one
extra mortgage payment each year, allowing you to shave
nearly six years off the length of your 30-year loan.
Enjoy your financial freedom. With no more
debt and a healthy savings plan in place, you can
begin to enjoy a life of financial freedom. Remember,
you probably won’t be able to achieve everything
at once, but by taking small financial steps, you can
start down the path to financial freedom. G

Korinne’s Korner
Hello, spring! After a tough, long winter,
there's nothing quite like sunshine, trees in
bloom and temperatures above 32 degrees.
I would like to share with you all another one of my favorite
sayings: “Life begins outside your comfort zone.” How true!
Many times we have to push ourselves to get out into the
world and try something new — regardless of our age.
About 12 years ago, I thought it would be fun to learn
how to quilt. I started by totally underestimating
the cost required to even become a beginner.
Forget the fact that I was not a gifted sewer and
had little interest in making clothing, other than
repairing kids’ seams — you get the drift.
What a steep but rewarding learning curve this adventure
has been for me. Making quilts for family, friends, the
Gleaner convention (!), etc., is totally therapeutic for
me. During the cold winter months in Michigan, I was
fortunate to have found a group called Quilts for the
Heart. Area women of all ages sew quilts from donated
materials that are then given to social service agencies in
the area — veterans groups, a women's shelter and C.S.
Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor, just to name a few.
get out of your comfort zone and give time to personal
interests or agencies that could use your many talents.
Kevin and I, along with many of the employees
at Gleaner's Home Office, kicked off 2014 with a
conscious, heartfelt attempt to live a healthier lifestyle.
We haven't reinvented the wheel. We are just trying
to eat, exercise and drink all that water. Our food
plans call for lower carbohydrates and fewer processed
foods, while eating more fresh fruits and vegetables.
Below is a favorite salad recipe given to me from our dear
daughter-in-law, which we have renamed after her.
We are looking forward to seeing you
all at the summer picnics!
Fraternally,
Korinne
I can't tell you the personal sense of satisfaction that
comes to my heart when I contribute part of myself to
those in dire need of a helping hand. I challenge you to
Kendra's Salad (Spinach Strawberry Salad)
For the dressing:
3 tablespoons sugar
For the salad:
3 tablespoons light mayonnaise
10 ounces spinach leaves or
romaine lettuce
1 tablespoon poppy seeds
2 tablespoons slivered almonds
2 tablespoons skim milk
1 cup sliced strawberries
1 tablespoon white wine vinegar
To serve, combine all of the salad
ingredients in a bowl, toss with some
of the dressing and enjoy!
Combine all of the dressing ingredients
in a jar and shake. Refrigerate if not using
immediately. (I usually double the amount of
ingredients.)

Every dad is a superhero.
Every mom is a miracle worker.
You can’t put a price tag on skills like that. But if your family’s wonder worker were suddenly
