Happy New Year! We made it to the year 2016! Can you believe it? I
hope your holidays were healthy and peaceful. Now we head into the
New Year with new challenges and changes on the horizon.
One change is a new look for the newsletter. It is a bit smaller, but will
continue to provide all the information about what’s going on each day,
to mark your calendars, and to join us for fun and make new friends.
Have you made your new year’s resolutions? Stay healthy and fit by
joining one of our exercise classes or come to our monthly dance. New
classes and programs are always being offered…the center has something
for everyone.
Join our volunteer program…volunteering is a great way to “give back”
and make a positive contribution to the world. Numerous studies have
shown that people who do volunteer work have lower rates of depression
and heart disease, live happier more fulfilled lives, have greater selfesteem and greater function ability, especially for older adults.
We are looking forward to the building upgrades, renovations, and
remodeling this year. And we are growing in new ways. New events.
New activities. New programs. We never stop working to make the
center a better place for you! It’s going to be a busy year and we look
forward to sharing the journey with you.
Wishing everyone a healthy and happy new year!
Maureen Cooper

Volunteer Appreciation Holiday Breakfast
Dec. 17th
(L to R) Jordan Hitchens, Shaun Falkenbach,
Mike Vellinga, Dave Alspach, Ed Alspach, Grace
Navarro, and Sonia Hollingsworth
It’s that time again!
Tax season has begun!
Once again, AARP volunteers will be here at
the center to provide tax services for the 2015
tax year. Appointments will be held from 9:00
a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays,
and Thursdays beginning Feb. 2nd. Beginning
Jan. 25th, you may call (760) 643-5290 to make
an appointment. Walk-in appointments will
also be available.
Geri-Fit
Demonstration
Many seniors are under the impression that walking
and upper body strength training exercises are
enough to keep them healthy and strong. However,
the muscles in the lower body are in the most need
of strength training. Join Evan Gaines at 11:00 a.m.
in the Park Terrace Café for a 40 minute informative
talk and demonstration, followed by a 20-minute
question and answer session to learn more about
strength training exercises. Evan is a licensed and
certified Geri-Fit trainer with over 15 years of
experience as a strength and conditioning
professional, and functional movement coach.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS
Below are some achievable goals for seniors in 2016, all of which can help to bring you closer to your family members.
•
Do you have some family recipes that you have been keeping to yourself? Has your granddaughter been pestering you to
show her how you make your famous apple pie? Now is the time to share! Recipes which have been passed down from one
generation to the next provide families with a powerful trigger of happy times gathered around the kitchen table, and help
keep the memories of those no longer with you alive.
•
Set a goal to increase your exercise in the New Year. This can be as simple as purchasing a pedometer and vowing to walk
a certain number of steps each day. Include your loved ones in your efforts by asking them to join you on walks around the
neighborhood or at the local mall.
•
Pass the fine art of letter writing down to the next generation by writing letters to some of your loved ones. Vow to send
handwritten birthday cards and thank you notes throughout the year as well.
•
Learn more about the technology your family is using. Did you know that Fast Company magazine has reported that people
age 55 to 64 are the fastest growing demographic on Twitter, with use in that age group increasing by 79% since
2012? Additionally, since 2012, use by that age group has grown 46% on Facebook and 56% on Google+! Even if you are
unfamiliar with these technologies, you can learn them. You will bond with a tech savvy family member as they help you set
up your accounts, and once you have learned how to use them, you’ll be able to better keep in touch with the younger
members of your family.
•
Vow to have some tough conversations with your family that you have been putting off. If you haven’t done so already, now is
the time to draw up a will, name an executor, and discuss plans for your future with your loved ones.

Vista Silver Star Foundation
The Vista Silver Star Foundation completed 2015 with several
key initiatives underway including committing to assist
McClellan Center with additional funding support in 2016 for
special events and hosting a tribute in honor of the late Carolyn
Chetister earlier this month at the Center.
The VSSF Board met in mid-November and welcomed a new
member to its Board of Directors—Attorney Craig Castle. Craig
is uniquely qualified to advise the Foundation in legal matters as
well as being a long time resident of Vista for more than 25
years.
Board Member Darcy Clevenger presented the Board with a first
look at the Foundation’s upcoming website which will greatly
enhance the VSSF’s presence and communication efforts in the
community. We hope to go live with the website during the first
quarter of 2016.
Members of the Board look forward to working with the Gloria
McClellan Center staff and family in 2016. If you have any
interest in finding our more about us, we welcome your
involvement and you can contact us through the Center or by
contacting Nancy Kropf, Chair of the VSSF, [email protected] or
760.822.5973. Of course, you can leave messages with the
Center reception for the VSSF at 760.639.6160.

GLORIA McCLELLAN ADULT
ACTIVITY AND RESOURCE CENTER
The Gloria McClellan Center, located in beautiful Brengle Terrace Park in Vista, California,
offers one-stop shopping for area seniors. The multipurpose center is the ‘Main Entrance’
to a wonderful array of services, classes, resources and activities.
The mission of the center is to promote the physical, emotional and social well-being of
older adults and to involve them in all aspects of community life. The gift of longer life
means more time to travel, learn, try out new careers and give something back to the
community. Living longer can sometimes lead to greater need and vulnerability in later
years. The center is a valuable resource to access and address all of these issues.
“It is never too late to be what
you might have been.”
