This issue of
the Epistle II is
dedicated in
loving memory
of Marie
Jongebloed ’81.
From the Headmaster
Dear St. Paul’s
Family,
I hope this edition
of the Epistle II finds
you well. We are
winding up another
fantastic academic
year, and we are
very proud of the
latest additions to your ranks – the Class of
2012. All of our classes strive for excellence,
but this group succeeded beyond the wildest
of expectations. They set a record in the
amount of college scholarship money awarded.
Their performances in the studio and on the
stage were award winning. They continued
the tradition of winning state championships
by accumulating six, and they served their
community at the highest level at our School
through their expressions of faith. They have
established a high standard for future classes
to be measured. We are excited about next year
and look forward to great things from the Class
of 2013.
The heart of a school is always the faculty. This
year, four of our faculty retired – Beth Compton,
Lynne Daugherty, Wanda Sigler, and Laurie
Shorter. All epitomize the great things about
our School and all have left St. Paul’s better
for having been here. Their commitment was
evident when they discussed their retirement
and wanted to have input as to who might take
their place. While an unusual request in other
instances, their motivation was only to see
that their work, and the success of the School,
continue. I am grateful for the passion they feel
for St. Paul’s and their profession.
In keeping with the tradition of true professional
development that Beth, Lynne, Wanda and
Laurie helped foster, 48 members of our faculty,
across all divisions and disciplines, gave up a
full week of their summer to participate in an
intense, interactive workshop on Writer’s Stylus
that I think will transform the curriculum of our
School. I had the privilege of being invited to
the last presentations of the workshop. Despite
being the last day of a long week, the faculty
members were energized and excited by the
work they had done, and were very proud of
what they had accomplished. I was, too. The
gratitude they expressed to the presenter, the
administrators, and to the other participants
was authentic and heartfelt. That day speaks
volumes about the commitment of the faculty to
the education of our students – academically,
artistically, athletically, and spiritually. It was
definitely a moment among many to be most
proud of our School.
Thank you for your continued support of St.
Paul’s Episcopal School. Have a great summer,
and, as always, I invite you to come and visit
your School.
Yours truly,
Marty Lester
Headmaster

CAMPUS
St. Paul’s Congratulates our Retiring Faculty
After a total of 112 years at St. Paul’s Episcopal School,
we say good-bye to Beth Compton (36 years), Wanda
Sigler (24 years), Lynne Daugherty (22 years), and Laurie
Shorter (30 years). Our retiring faculty are pictured with
Headmaster Marty Lester at the end of the year meeting
and party at the Wine Loft. We wish them all the best in
their retirement and hope they will visit often.
Dawson Faculty Excellence Award
At the Senior Breakfast in May, Lori Harris, 5th Grade Math teacher was awarded the Dawson
Faculty Excellence Award. The award was established by Catherine and Dudley Dawson to financially
reward a deserving faculty member in recognition of teaching excellence.
Frank Winter Hardie Memorial Award
During the Upper School Awards Ceremony this year, Jody Powell, Theatre and Choir Director, was
awarded the Frank Winter Hardie Memorial Award. The award was established by the Hardie Family in
memory of Frank Winter Hardie ’98 and is given to an Upper or Middle School teacher, coach or staff
member whose contributions have inspired ordinary students and athletes to be outstanding people.
Alumni Scholarship Fund
The Alumni Scholarship Fund assists in the education of a deserving and qualified child of an alumnus who would
not otherwise be able to attend St. Paul’s. To learn more about this fund and all of our endowed funds, please visit
the Foundation and Endowment page on the St. Paul’s website under Giving Back.
Robert H. Rutledge Fellows of Philanthropy
On May 10, 2012, St. Paul’s Episcopal
School honored Robert H. Rutledge by
renaming the Philanthropy Ambassadors
as the Robert H. Rutledge Fellows of
Philanthropy. St. Paul’s held a ceremony
to recognize his lifetime commitment to
serving both St. Paul’s Episcopal School
and the community at large. Various
speakers, including Headmaster Marty
Lester, Athletic Director Gerry Strang,
Theatre and Choir Director Jody Powell,
and Rutledge Fellows Lexi Mestas and
William Kneip, shared their stories about
Coach Bob and his influence on their lives.
The ceremony also highlighted the impact
of the St. Paul’s Community Service
program on our community and invited
representatives from the different nonprofits with which St. Paul’s students have
volunteered. Student representatives from
each class presented their service projects
throughout the year with the different
3 organizations.
Toward the end of the ceremony,
another member of the St.
Paul’s family was recognized
for her commitment to serving
the community. Leslie Lerner,
the Community Service Director,
was honored by St. Paul’s
Episcopal School by renaming the
Community Service Endowment
the Leslie Lerner Community
Service Endowment. The
endowment was established by
the St. Paul’s Board of Trustees
in honor of Mrs. Leslie Lerner’s
successful Community Service
Program and its six month build
of the Habitat for Humanity House
in 2010. The fund’s earnings will
support the School’s Community
Service Program.

ALUMNI
LUNCHEON
Highlights from the Annual Luncheon
On April 25, more than 120 Alumni gathered in Saints’
Square for the Alumni Council’s 7th Annual Luncheon.
Chairman Cam Marston ’87 led the program and the guest
speakers were Assistant Headmaster Victor Helmsing and
Head Football Coach Steve Mask. Headmaster Marty Lester
presented the Distinguished Alumni Award to Dr. Sidney
Brevard ’79. (See article on opposite page). Many of the
Class of 2012 - Almost Alums at the time - assisted with the
program and campus tours following the luncheon.
Mr. Helmsing mentioned several Alumni Success Stories.
Below are highlights from his “State of the Alumni”
speech:
• St. Paul’s Senior Bren McMaken ’12 was named a
University Fellows at the University of Alabama, the highest
honor that a student can earn. Bren will join alums Graham
Byrd ’11 and John Wyatt ’10 as Fellows.
• Two years ago six Saints made up the first year class at
UAB Medical School – this represents 3.5% of the class.
This year’s first year class at UAB has three Saints.
• We currently have four Alumni playing volleyball at the
D1 level: Catherine Rebarchak ’09 is at Purdue where she
made the All Big Ten freshman team last year. She also
played on an All Star team in China last summer. She
also lead Purdue to their first victory in 22 years over Penn
State. Katherine White ’11 was the starting center hitter
at Alabama this past year as a Freshman. Nancy Taylor
’09 started as an 8th grader at St. Paul’s as a setter and
now is in her third year at Nichols State where she has
been starting as a setter since she was a Freshman while
maintaining a 3.75 in Pre-Med. Jennifer Percy ’10 was
selected for the ACC Freshman All Conference after starting
as a Freshman at Georgia Tech. She was chosen an
Academic All American last year as well.
• When we talk of athletes we usually speak of the high
profile ones like Jake Peavy ’99 who threw a complete game
this past Monday and currently has an ERA of 1.19. Or
we look at MVP, AJ McCarron ’09 or Mark Barron ’08 who
should go in the first round of tomorrow night’s NFL draft.
(chosen 7th by Tampa Bay).
• Speaking of national recognition, some of our Alumni
are moving that way as stand up comedians. This past
December Hunter Cain ’00, Mary Patterson Broome ’01 and
Peyton Clarkson ’99 entertained a sold out crowd at Tacky
Jacks for almost two hours performing so well that I left with
my sides hurting from laughing so much. As far as I know
Hunter is still refining his craft in New York, but I know Mary
Patterson performs all over the west coast and Peyton is
doing shows throughout the country.

• At the New York City reunion was Major JD Foy ’97 who
is a Major in the Air Force flying C-131 cargo planes to
Afghanistan, Kuwait and Iraq. JD was recently given a
national award for his humanitarian work in flying relief
supplies to Haiti and Indonesia after the earthquake and
tsunami. (See Alumni Spotlight opposite page.)
• A year ago when I gave this address, I asked you
to consider working the next day to help load busses
for the Tuscaloosa tornado relief effort and five of you
showed up, and several Alumni helped drive the buses to
Tuscaloosa that Saturday.
• I read about St. Paul’s Alumni in the paper heading up
committees, working for charities, contributing to worthy
causes. I believe this is the School’s most important
responsibilty, and from what I see we are meeting this
charge as our Alumni continue to serve not just the local
community, not just the state community, but the world
community as is evidenced by JD’s recent recognition.
Head Football Coach Steve Mask addressed Alumni at the
Annual Luncheon. He encouraged former students to come out
and support the football team. He also invited former football
players to come out for practice anytime.
ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
Dr. Brevard ’79 Receives
Distinguished Alumnus Award
During the Annual
Alumni Luncheon, Dr. Sid
Brevard ’79 received the
Distinguished Alumnus
Award for his outstanding
accomplishments in his
professional field and for
his civic leadership.
While in the U.S. Air Force,
Dr. Brevard was deployed
to Africa with United Nations troops in response to the
genocide in Rwanda, cared for troops injured in the
“Black Hawk Down” situation, and treated victims from
the ethnic war in the Balkans. In 2002, he was named
the Special Operation’s and the U.S. Air Force Global
Health Officer of the Year. In 2003, Dr. Brevard assumed
command of the 15th Medical Operation Squadron and
became the Chief Operating Officer of a clinic providing
healthcare to 10,000 military personnel and their
families at Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii.
He began a fellowship in trauma surgery and critical
care at Charity Hospital in New Orleans in July of 2005.
Just two months later, Hurricane Katrina struck and
Dr. Brevard and his wife, Jennifer, an Air Force Reserve
Nurse, spent the next five days in Charity Hospital taking
care of patients with no electricity, no water, no toilets,
and limited supplies of food and medicine.
After completing his fellowship, Dr. Brevard was
appointed the Director of the Air Force Center for
Sustainment of Trauma and Readiness Skills. He
trained civilian surgeons to be trauma qualified and was
selected the Attending Trauma Surgeon of the Year in
2009. While at the center, he deployed to both Iraq and
Afghanistan, and was the Chief of Trauma for all U.S.
troops in Afghanistan in 2008. Under his watch, 99%
of troops injured in combat survived their injuries, the
highest percentage in the history of warfare.
Sid joined the surgery department at the University
of South Alabama Medical Center as an Associate
Professor. His current duties involve teaching medical
students, training surgical residents, and providing
trauma care for the citizens of the Gulf Coast. He was
recognized by the graduating medical students with the
“Scarlet Sash Award” which recognizes the attending
physicians who had the most meaningful input into the
student’s education.
Major Foy ’97
Receives Cheney Award
Maj. John D. Foy
’97 received the Lt.
William Cheney Award
from the Secretary
of the Air Force, the
Honorable Michael
Donley, in Washington
D.C. this past October.
The Cheney Award
honors an act of valor,
extreme fortitude or
self-sacrifice in a humanitarian interest, performed
in connection with aircraft by an officer or enlisted
Airman. He and another Airman received the award
in recognition of their efforts to support Pakistan
flood relief operations in 2010.
According to the Air Force Times, Maj. Foy and
Capt. Patrick Markey “led a 36-member team that
provided humanitarian support during one of the
largest natural disasters in Pakistan’s history. The
2010 floods there affected some 20 million people.
During their six weeks supporting the humanitarian
operation, more than 7.5 million pounds of cargo
and more than 1,800 personnel were transported on
290 flights throughout the flood-affected area.”
Maj. Foy credits his foundation as a leader through
his time as a student at St. Paul’s. He believed,
“The Air Force Academy, as well as the Air Force,
shares all the same qualities listed in the mission
statement. The core values of the Air Force are
integrity first, service before self, and excellence in
all we do. I was taught these values at home and it
was reinforced at St. Paul’s. Whether it was in the
classroom or on the field of play, these qualities were
taught and instilled in my character.”
Maj. Foy also has a bit of advice to offer St. Paul’s
parents and students. He advised, “Keep a positive
attitude and get ready to work hard. It will be one
of the most challenging experiences of your life and
will make your college experience a breeze. Every
moment will be worth it. I was far better prepared
for college and life coming from St. Paul’s than most
college freshmen.”

ALUMNI COUNCIL 2012-13
From the Alumni Chair:
Running with the
Saints: l-r Bill Moore ’97
The Alumni Council recently spent an afternoon
planning the alumni events for the upcoming year. We
had graduate representatives from every decade on
hand to offer their thoughts on the types of events
that would be appealing and how to structure each
event to maximize the experience. I subdivided the
attendees into groups and challenged each group to
come up with ideas on what would make each event
truly memorable. At the end of the planning session
we were all very excited about what we’ve put together
for the St Paul’s Alumni – it is going to be a wonderful
year. (See events listed on page 12. *Denotes Alumni

I invite you to get involved with the Alumni Council.
You’ll enjoy visiting with old friends and beginning
new friendships with alumni you’ve not yet met. The
common purpose that drives the council makes getting
involved easy and fun – we simply need your help
organizing and executing the events for people like
you. We want your ideas and your efforts and there
are plenty of opportunities to find an event that fits
your calendar. Consider it networking, consider it
giving back to your Alma Mater, or just consider it a fun
thing to do where you meet new, nice, and successful
people.
Our council has energy, we have momentum, and we
have a plan for the upcoming year. We look forward to
seeing you either as an attendee or a volunteer.
