Dear Friends,
Want to be happier? Give to LSC.
Recently a co-worker sent me a link to a Huffington Post article she found on Facebook. It’s titled
“Want to Be Happier? Give More. Give Better,” written by Brady Josephson. In the article,
Josephson cites a study connecting charitable giving and happiness, specifically that “…people
who spent a higher proportion of their income on prosocial spending (gifts for others and donations
to charity) compared to personal spending (bills/expenses and gifts on themselves) were ‘happier’
in a self-reported survey.”
Josephson goes on to cite more books and articles, which in turn, cite more books and articles, all related to happiness
and giving. And while I was somewhat surprised to see the wealth of material on the subject, I wasn’t surprised to learn
that such a correlation exists. Giving to LSC makes me happy, and other LSC donors tell me it makes them happy, too.
Throughout the pages of this year’s annual report you will find the names of thousands of happy people who gave to
LSC in 2015. You’ll find the names of first-time donors, long-time donors, employee donors, and more. There are gifts
from individuals, foundations, businesses, clubs, groups, churches, and schools. There are also those who do their
giving as volunteers or who donate “in-kind” items often needed by our clients or programs.
Want to be happier? Join these happy givers.
By giving to LSC you can give a veteran a roof over his head and a chance to heal from trauma that most of us will
never understand. You can give an exhausted caregiver a well-deserved break and time to rest. You can help
provide a place where isolated seniors can find friendship, health care, and fun. You can help an adult with
disabilities reach a level of independence he has never known. You can help a child find that forever home.
Josephson’s article goes on to say that not only does giving make you happy, but that happy people give more.
Want to be even happier? Give; then give again.

LSC Giving Groups
In the pages that follow, we acknowledge and
thank the more than 2,600 donors who in 2015 made
gifts to LSC, LSC senior services, LSC child and
family services, and/or any LSC affiliate ministry.
We also acknowledge cumulative gifts, planned
giving donors, and another special group of
individuals, the Shepherd Volunteer Society,
comprised of those who contribute 100 hours or
more of volunteer work annually.
Every attempt is made to record all names and gifts
accurately. Please contact the LSC Administrative
Office at 704-637-2870 if any error is detected so
that records can be corrected.
Some volunteers rock, but Food Lion volunteers roar! Food Lion employees are just one of many groups that donate their time to the
Lutheran Services Carolinas ministries.

LSC Good Shepherds
The LSC Good Shepherds provide a critical level of support to LSC. Members include the Shepherd Cumulative
Giving Society, the Shepherd Legacy Society, the Shepherd Volunteer Society, and the Shepherd Giving Society.
Shepherd Cumulative Giving Society
The Shepherd Cumulative Giving Society recognizes individual donors who have made $50,000 or more in
cumulative cash gifts to LSC during their lifetimes as well as organizations that have made $100,000 or more in
cumulative gifts to LSC.

in South Carolina led to immeasurable destruction throughout
the state. Though the effect on
LSC programs was minimal,
donors like the late Kathryn
Terry of Salisbury, a long-time
LSC supporter, were quick to
offer help to purchase needed
supplies.

In 2015, LSC volunteers contributed more than 30,569
hours of time to LSC, not including the hundreds and
hundreds of hours donated by church groups, clubs,
