Under the guidance of Artist in Residence, Angelica Pozo, Tremont friends and neighbors have been hard at work on a community mural for Lincoln Park since February. The time has finally come to celebrate the fruits of our collective artistic endeavors. On Tuesday, June 21st , 2016 we will have a brief dedication ceremony at the center of Lincoln Park around 6pm. This will take place during the Tremont Farmers Market. So please plan to come to the Market and then see what a beautiful work of art we have created together as a community. Around 450 of Tremont community members have been involved in the process. Over 800 small tiles were decorated by the community through the block clubs, church groups, or at public tile decorating sessions at various local establishments. Another dozen participants formed the Illustrators Core Group or amateur and professional artists depicting over 60 images of historic Tremont onto larger tile panels. But our real project troopers are the couple dozen folks who got addicted to making art together and signed on as Art Crew Core Group, meeting weekly for the past four months to help with the many other phases necessary to create this work of public art. The heart, soul and history of Tremont is in this mural. So mark your calendars for Tuesday, June 21, 2016, 6pm at Lincoln Park. So join us as we applaud the beautiful work you and your neighbors have wrought. Come search for and show off your tile(s). We hope to announce a location to convene afterwards for a celebratory toast. 2406 Professor Avenue Cleveland, Ohio 44113 Address Service Requested Non Profit Org. On May 11th & 12th of 2016 9 trees (7 elm & 2 oak) were planted in Lincoln Park along Starkweather and W. 11th Street by incredible participation from Western Reserve Land Conservancy, Holden Arboretum, Tree Stewards from around Northeast Ohio, and Tremont residents. These trees were provided through Western Reserve Land Conservancy through their Reforest Our City Grant program, which aims to revitalize Cleveland’s urban core through implantation of The Cleveland Tree Plan. Tremont West Development Corporation hopes that this grant continues to build capacity for communitywide greenspace enhancement projects. To learn about the Western Reserve Land Conservancy visit http://www. wrlandconservancy.org/. For more info about the Holden Arboretum go to http://www. holdenarb.org/home/. Your Monthly Update from the GVV Bridge Project Team RiverSweep 2016 Wrap -Up Thank you, RiverSweep volunteers, for all your hard work and participation on Saturday, May 7th! We had a great turnout of volunteers this year in Tremont/Duck Island – 102 adults and 15 children/youth volunteered in our neighborhoods. A RiverSweep staffer commented when the waiver forms were turned in: “You have the favorite neighborhood – nobody gets volunteers like you do!” From Holmden Hill to Willey Hill, University to Steelyard, Wade/West 25th to West 3rd/Quigley, several large dumpsters were filled, many tires were hauled from the neighborhood – and countless bags of garbage, litter, building supplies, and debris were cleaned-up. And you helped make it happen! Thanks again for all of your hard work and civic engagement! RTA Service Update RTA has proposed a 9 AM- 3PM M-F Service for the #81 bus servicing Tremont, along with fare increases. This proposal of modified service was announced at RTA’s April Board Meeting on April 26th. This proposal of service will not work for our community, which is why we are urging residents to assist Tremont West in advocating for more service not less! Please join us on June 7th at 9 AM at RTA Headquarters located at 1240 W 6th St. Cleveland, Ohio 44113 to get your voice heard on this issue prior to the board vote. For more information about the event, or how to become more involved with this initiative, feel free to contact Kai Kyles, the AmeriCorps VISTA Member at Tremont West Development Corporation at [email protected] or by calling 216-575-0920 x108. We appreciate your support! Project Reaches Milestone as Steel Crosses the River In mid-May the George V. Voinovich Bridge team reached a major milestone as steel crossed the Cuyahoga River for the new eastbound bridge! Before placing the “drop-in” girders directly over the river, crews placed girders which cantilevered out from each pier on either side of the river. ODOT & Metroparks Moving Forward with Plans for Sideyard & Area Adjacent to Trail In April, ODOT and the Cleveland Metroparks visited several Tremont block clubs to discuss updated plans for the “Sideyard” park and hillside adjacent to the Towpath Trail, near Sokolowski’s University Inn. The biggest change is to the area formerly known as “Blueberry Hill” which is bound by Sokolowski Way, Abbey Avenue and the Towpath Trail. The area has been revised to include native and non-invasive tree and shrub species – rather than blueberries – which will provide a colorful and texture-filled pallet for the area. Check-out the May edition of Inside Tremont for a rendering of the area! Work at Abbey Avenue: Soon, Tremonters and Duck Islanders should expect a short-term closure of Abbey Avenue under I-90 as crews erect shoring towers, repair pavement and erect steel. A closure of Abbey for about two weeks is expected in mid-June. The detour is easy, simply use the NEW West 14th connection to travel under the new bridges and connect with Fairfield and West 11th Street. Additional Work in Other Tremont Areas: Work including landscaping and painting continues in other areas of the Tremont neighborhood. In addition, Starkweather and Kenilworth will be paved between West 14th Street and Scranton Avenue. Paving work is weather dependent and will be scheduled with other paving activities, including the additional parking being added near West 14th Street. Remember: Getting to Tremont is still easy using the new Abbey loop ramp. However, the W 14th Street entrance ramp to I-90 east is closed until the second bridge is complete in late 2016. Please keep in mind this is an active construction zone and stay safely away. For more info on the project, visit www.Innerbelt.org. In This Photo: Construction of the second #GVVBridge is moving right along! The first steel girder joined the piers on the east and west banks of the Cuyahoga River on May 12, 2016. Kitchen necessities like eggs, cheese, milk, and bread are now available without even starting a car. As if this wasn’t enough cause for excitement, the Tremont General Store also offers pet supplies and a 2,600 square foot garden center. Owner and Purveyor, Kevin Kubovcik, has been working with local merchants to stock his shelves and provide shoppers with homegrown choices. That included items from Rising Star Coffee, On The Rise, Cleveland Kraut, Dante Sauces, Dee Jays Meats, Green City Growers, Lake Erie Creamery, Wake Robin Foods, Six Shooter Coffee, and Giannios Candy. The store also carries fruits, onions, garlic, and other seasonal produce. All vegetable and food products are sold tax free. Kubovcik is from the Old Brooklyn area and hopes that his Cleveland roots and background are exhibited in the garden center and the items he carries. Previous to opening the General Store, Kubovcik managed Grace Brother’s Urban Farm Store. His experience there gave him the knowledge and vision for his most recent endeavor. The garden center offers everything from tomatoes, peppers, herbs, brussel sprouts, hanging baskets, flowering pots, annuals, succulents, tropical, and perennials. “The foliage, color, and texture of our plants, flowers, and vegetables are meant to complement one another,” said Kubovcik. “It’s nature’s art,” he continued. Plants, flowers, and vegetables in the garden center are locally sourced from greenhouses including Boyerts in Medina and Rosby in Brooklyn Heights. Most of the store’s herbs come from Art Form Nurseries in Chagrin Falls. The shrubs and bushes come from Willoway Nurseries in Avon. The garden center will be open year round and will continually rotate seasonal items. Besides plants, vegetables, and flowers, the General Store is also stocked with seeds and the gardening tools necessary for all green-thumbed residents. Lastly, the store offers a large selection of pet food and pet care needs. All brands are handpicked based on the quality of the product. Whether dog, cat, rabbit, bird, or other, the General Store carries a variety of quality animal feed and pet supplies. “With all the animal lovers in Tremont, we hope to become a pet food source in the community,” said Kubovcik. Store hours are 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM Monday through Wednesday, 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM Thursday and Friday, 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM on Saturday, and 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM on Sunday. The General Store will also be open during Tremont Walkabout, Art Walks, and also Taste of Tremont. Whether man, woman, animal, or plant the Tremont General Store has all the food and supplies one would need. No need to start the car to shop and support local business. Just walk to 2418 Professor Avenue and enjoy. We hope to see you in June! to offer a letter of support for this project, noting that this was not a unanimous decision and was passed with some opposition Metro North and several abstentions to be noted in that letter to the Board of Zoning Appeals. Our block club also reviewed two new projects, At our late April meeting we received Safety and CourtWatch updates Craig and Gloria Gates presented plans to build on the north with our special guest, Mark Pratt, Tremont Safety Coordinator, section of Lorain Avenue, known to the neighborhood as Overlook and with an Officer from the Second District Police Community Hill. The Gates were denied a onetime approval vote, but were Services Unit. The officer encouraged us to report any unusual invited back to address any concerns before our vote at the next activity in advance of and during the RNC being held downtown meeting. Westleigh Harper addressed the block club as well; with July 18th – 21st. We also met with a number of candidates seeking three projects that exceeds adjacent property line requirements election to the Tremont West Board of Directors, who sought our of this inside street, west 19th St. location. All three units were support and our vote at the May Annual Meeting . Also in late April Inside Tremont there was a Public Meeting for the Scranton Road Reconstruction (Fairfield to Columbus Road). That meeting introduced the project construction team to the public and went over traffic restrictions, construction sequencing and construction details. The project limits are Scranton Road (Fairfield to Carter) and Carter Road (Scranton to Columbus). The improvements planned include new concrete pavement for both roadways, new driveways, new sidewalks, water line upgrades, new drainage infrastructure and green stormwater solutions to address water quality. The meeting ran concurrently with our April block club meeting, so some residents left the block club meeting early or immediately following our to catch the remainder of the Scranton/Carter Public Meeting. On the agenda for our late May meeting is an update of the Tremont West Annual meeting (including which candidates were elected) as well as updates on the RiverSweep Clean-up, RTA bus service, and Tremont Gardeners’ Flower Sale. We also look ahead to upcoming summer events and learn more about recent renovation activity at the long closed storefront on the corner of Scranton Road and Rowley Avenue. Make plans now to attend the Dedication Ceremony & Festivities for the Community Ceramic Mural Project with Tremont artist, Angelica Pozo, in Lincoln Park – scheduled for Tuesday, June 21st (Summer Solstice Day) at 6:15pm. A number of Metro North residents have participated in tile making – and it’s a great community even!. Great day to check out the Tremont Farmers’ Market as well, which is held in Lincoln Park each Tuesday through early October from 4-7pm. For more information on our block club, check out our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Metro-North-Block-Club, or contact Chair, Sue Krosel—or Scott at Tremont West—[email protected] or 216.575.0920 ext.106. Please join us for our next business meeting on Tuesday, June 28th, 6:30pm, at the ground floor meeting room of St. Michael Church. North of Literary The North of Literary (NOL) Block Club’s most recent meeting was May 17 at Press Wine Bar. Co-chairs Mike Williams and Sam Vozar thanked members for participating in RiverSweep and the Cheering Party for the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon. Our deepest thanks and appreciation to Danielle Vigh, for serving as NOL’s RiverSweep Coordinator again this year, to Deane Malaker for hosting our Marathon Party, and to Roberta Rocco and others who prepared and shared such wonderful food for the Party. At the meeting, Special Guest Cami Ross provided information on the mural that the Duck Island Block Club will be painting on the Lorain-Carnegie Bridge, and requested volunteers. The mural was funded in part by a grant, and donation of paint by Sherwin-Williams. Michael McDonald, the Second District Community Representative for the City of Cleveland Community Relations Board, provided information on the RNC Surveys available to Cleveland residents and efforts to combat Human Trafficking. Five Tremont West Development Corporation Board (TWDC) Candidates introduced themselves and spoke about their candidacy, and the candidate for Board President spoke as well. ADA Architects presented information on the Constantino’s Grocery Store planned for W. 14th St. They have not yet received a zoning letter, so they will return for formal approval once the full list of variances is received. The block club asked questions about truck traffic, parking, and landscaping. The block club is excited to have a grocery store in the neighborhood, and wants to be sure it is a positive addition. Next, A.I.A. Architects presented plans for a new apartment building on the corner of W. 11th and Fairfield Ave. While the current design would not require a parking variance, there were concerns expressed on the impact to local parking availability. Block club members also requested that the design should not look like a typical suburban hotel or apartment complex, but be something unique to Tremont. Once designs are finalized and variances received, the project will be presented again for a vote of support. Matt Moss, the new Housing and Economic Development Director for TWDC, and Mark Pratt, the new TWDC Safety Coordinator, were introduced to the Block Club. For more information on our block club and activities, please check out our Facebook page, or contact Co-Chairs, Sam Vozar – [email protected] - and Mike Williams mjwilliams334@gmail. com – or Community Incolvement Manager, Scott Rosenstein, at Tremont West at 216-575-0920 x106 – [email protected]. So that our members may participate in the community celebration of the mural project in Lincoln Park, our meeting is rescheduled to Wednesday, June 22nd. We look forward to seeing you! South of Jefferson The June meeting of the South of Jefferson block club held at the Roosevelt Post 58 began with a call to order and introductions. Eight community members running for seats on the TWDC board visited the block club to introduce themselves and ask for votes of support in the upcoming annual meeting. Board president candidate Ann Marie Riley asked for support in her quest to become the new TWDC board president. A safety update was then given by Mike Koski where he urged the block club to be vigilant about locking up cars and removing valuables due to the uptick in car break-ins likely due to the warmer weather. A resident brought up concerns over a nearby vacant home with broken windows. Koski encouraged the resident to follow up with code enforcement and gave out the number for the city help desk (216-6642000). Co-chair Greg Kobe updated the club on the Tremont Mural project and encouraged any members that want to help regardless of artistic ability that there is still time to get involved and there is still plenty of work to be done before the projected unveiling on Tuesday, June 21st. Reminders of parking and traffic restrictions due to the Cleveland Rite Aid Marathon were made to all those in attendance. AmeriCorps Vista Member Kai Kyles updated the SOJ block club on the status of proposed cuts to RTA bus service to Tremont. Kyles reported that although fares may likely increase that a strong effort was being made to keep the bus loop to West 7th and Tremont Pointe from 7am-7pm despite the proposed cut to only serve that loop from 9am-3pm. The SOJ block club was then presented a plan by long-time Brayton resident Dave Mikolajczyk to build a multi-use structure on the currently vacant parcel located at 833 Starkweather Avenue. The building proposed would contain one apartment and offices for Mikolajczyk’s design business. Mikolajczyk presented the project for input and was not asking for any zoning variances at the meeting. Residents raised many concerns ranging from condition of the owners yard, to parking and the rezoning to a multi-use lot among primarily residential lots. The next order of business regarded Lucky Park and it’s continued maintenance. Lucky Park is not owned by the city or any other public entity. The land is two parcels owned by two separate private landholders who allow the public to use it provided maintenance be taken care by the community. The club agreed the two main issues at hand were that the park needed some substantial landscaping and a better system for continued mowing. A sign-up sheet was circulated for those interested in helping landscape the park once a date and tools could be secured. Kai Kyles then updated the group on the Tree Stewards program that is part of the Reforest Our City Grant designed by the Western Reserve Land Conservancy to stem the loss of trees to development and help plant new trees. On a related note, Community Organizer Scott Rosenstein, responding to questions of concern, stated that the screws placed in many of the trees along Professor and a few other streets to be lit up with LEDs during the upcoming Walkabout Tremont were well researched by one of the Walkabout team members and would not harm those trees. Following the meeting there was a social time at the Post 58 downstairs bar. Please join us for our next meeting on Tuesday, June 14th, 7pm, at the upstairs meeting room of Roosevelt Post 58.
