The longer you wait and the closer it gets to Thanksgiving, the more expensive the airline ticket will be. If you wait, many times flights are completely booked. If this happens, the only way you would be able to fly to California would be to book your flight to arrive two to three days early or to leave two or three days after the Thanksgiving rush. Important Travel Tips! l Make sure you tag all of your luggage with the correct name and address information. Most major airlines charge a fee for each checked bag. l Remember to arrive at your departure airport at least 2 hours before the scheduled time of your departure. Airport security will be at maximum levels for this popular travel week. l Airports will no longer allow you to check in for your departing flight less than 30 minutes before your scheduled time of departure. Some airports require a 45-minute arrival time prior to your flight. l Please pay attention to the items you are packing for Nationals. Refrain from packing any sharp objects or questionable items that might be confiscated by security. Check with your airline to get a list of items not approved by airport security. 18 1 Check the National Schedule Be sure to arrive in time for your age division’s check-in and plan your travel according to the dates of your pageants. 2 Airports The closest airport to the Nationals Host Hotel is the Orange County Airport (SNA). It’s just a short taxi ride away. A great second choice is the Los Angeles International Airport. LAX is located approximately 50 miles from the Marriot, but some airlines may offer better fares into this location. A new area airport is Ontario (ONT) which may be a good option to check out. In all cases, there are ample area shuttles with reasonable ground transportation fares to the hotel. 3 Book Your Flight Early Flights fill up quickly during Thanksgiving. Try to make your reservations early to take advantage of discounted fares. 4 Travel Arrangements You are responsible for booking and purchasing your own travel. Most families either use one of the major internet travel services (such as Expedia.com or Travelocity.com) or they call the major airlines to shop for prices. Whatever way you go, shop as early as you can. Girls who won their state queen title receive their travel fees to Nationals from their State Director. Girls who earned the National Trip through advertising sales will automatically receive a check directly from the national office. See the travel form page in the black and white forms section for details. 5 Hotel Reservations The official pageant Host Hotel is the beautiful Anaheim Marriott. O utd oo r P ool 19 Overall Competitions & Scoring Breakdown Age Groups: Miss (19-20) Teen (16-18) Pre-Teen (10-12) Jr. Pre-Teen (7-9) Jr.Teen (13-15) Princess (4-6) Age groups are assigned by the contestant’s attained age as of January 1 of the year of the competition. Our experienced panel of judges scores contestants in the following categories: • Resume 15% • Poise and Presentation in Formal Wear 25% • Personality During an Interview 25% • On-Stage Personal Introduction 25% • Community Involvement Project 10% At National American Miss we passionately believe that excellent judging is the backbone of an excellent pageant. In keeping with that passion, we bring in the very best selection of judges to be found anywhere in pageantry - bar none. To ensure unparalleled diversity, the judges are “rotated” such that no one judge will score all the preliminaries as well as the final show for any given age group. This results in a carefully designed process where each age group is scored by more than fifteen different judges. The judges come from across the country and are highly qualified. Quality is no accident; and it is carefully built-into our scoring process, based on decades of experience. Now...About the competitions! Resume - 15% As you undoubtedly know by now, National American Miss believes that each activity we provide should not only be fun, but also provide experiences that help equip you for life. We are now taking the next step in providing those real life skill experiences. Beginning with this year’s national pageant, the national competition resume is no longer a fill-in-the-blanks form. Instead, by eight weeks prior to the pageant, we will be providing you with actual resume templates by which you can download and prepare your own custom resume. Ideally, preparing a resume is not a one-time thing. It is a process. A resume is something that you will want to have in file, on your computer at home, and continue to build and nurture over the years. If you already have been cultivating a resume, good for you! If you do not yet have one then it is never too early to start, no matter what your age! With the assistance of college admission counselors and corporate human resources professionals, we will be providing you with not only the template, but also a how-to guide to prepare a resume which will be useful not only at the national pageant, but more importantly, to assist you as you go through life. Similar to the Community Involvement portion of the overall competition, the scoring of your resume is one in which you will receive the full 15% score credit for following some simple guidelines in preparing your resume. Notably, this score is completely separate from the “Best Resume” competition. We fully expect that every competitor will achieve the full 15% of this score. Whether your goal is to one day apply for college admission, apply for student leadership position at your school, or apply for a job, you will be one big step closer to success by having built a resume along the way. Formal Wear - 25% Formal Wear counts for 25% of your final pageant score! Every contestant will be individually introduced on stage, with all the lights, sound and excitement! Contestants are scored on their poise and presentation on stage in formal wear. The judges are looking for a representative that is proud and comfortable with who she is and how she presents herself onstage. Scores are based on the judges’ overall impressions, and the contestant’s ability to command both the judges’ and the audience’s attention in a poised, graceful, and professional manner. Choose a dress that reflects your unique personality. The color and style are your choice (see page 2223 for more details). The dress should help you feel confident and excited about the special person that you are! Keep in mind that one of the hallmarks of National American Miss is “ageappropriate.” While that perception may vary with every participant, and every person’s individual point of view, please keep in mind that if there is a question in your mind prior to the event if a given dress, on you, is stepping over the line, be aware that one or more judges may well have that same concern and you may lose valuable score points from one or more judges. As you are introduced on stage, you will be escorted. Your father, grandfather, uncle, cousin, godfather or any other friend may escort you on stage. This is such a great way to involve your male family members. If no one is available, we will be happy to provide an 20 escort for you at no cost. Remember, escorts at Nationals must be dressed in a suit or a tuxedo. Formal military uniforms are also super! Personal Introduction - 25% Personal introduction counts for 25% of your final pageant score. It’s a snap! During this competition, you will learn how to speak effectively using a microphone and how to confidently and professionally present yourself on stage. You will take home the lifelong skills of introducing yourself and speaking on stage to a live audience. Public Speaking is a skill admired by all. Contestants will introduce themselves on stage, saying their: • name • hometown • state • where they see themselves in the future and/or something interesting about themselves. Contestants are scored on their ability to clearly, confidently, and effectively deliver a message on stage to the audience. The judges are looking for a representative who naturally conveys her own unique personality through her effective and engaging public speaking skills and naturally confident stage presence. NEW! 60 second time limit. Good news!! No longer do you have to worry about whether you should prepare and memorize a super-long Personal Introduction. Over the years, many girls have done so, often with dissappointing results. Your Personal Introduction will be timed. Now there is a 60 second time limit for Personal Introduction at Nationals. For your comfort and confidence, we recommend that you design your Personal Introduction to not be near in length to 60 seconds. Why have the additional burden of worrying about keeping it just under 60 seconds? Give yourself some cushion. Tip: The average great personal introduction is often around 25 to 35 seconds. Please be aware that the longer a Personal Introduction is, the more opportunity for mistakes. Plus, the introduction has the potential to seem insincere, and lose the interest of the audience and / or judges. Be creative in your Introduction. Be proud of who you are! Always be sincere in your Introduction and don’t forget to look at the judges and audience. Eye contact is important! Interview - 25% Interview counts for 25% of your final pageant score. It’s easy! You will talk one-on-one with each of the pageant judges. This is when you can really let your personality shine through. At National American Miss, the interviews are held one-on-one, with each of the interview judges. It is our goal to use this experience to equip each participant with one-on-one job interview skills. You will take home valuable interviewing skills, such as making good eye contact, speaking confidently, and sitting properly during an interview. In a very real way, you are interviewing for the “job” of representing not only your state, but your country. If you win the national title, you will be a representative of girls from across the country. Just like you, the judges would like for the new national representatives to be girls that are friendly, naturally enthusiastic, and effective communicators. Each judge wants you to do well. Their goal is to learn more about you, your ambitions, and your personality. They are looking for a representative who can engage in fun, intelligent conversation with an adult. They will not trick you, or ask you questions with a right or wrong answer (for example, they will not ask you to “Name the Governor of your state”). Community Involvement - 10% The Community Involvement project counts for 10% of your total score in the National American Miss and the National All-American pageants. A full 10% of your pageant score will be automatically awarded to you when you show record of having completed 4 hours of community service at a local, area, or statewide service organization. There are a lot of great charities and service organizations in which you can give your time. For example, you could play board games with the elderly at a local nursing home, volunteer to help with “Race For The Cure,” visit children in a community hospital, or clean up a local park. Volunteering your time is fun! You’ll be glad you did! NEW! As part of our green initiative, and to make the process easier, we have done away with the paper forms! By November 15, all contestants will need to upload the documentation of their 4 or more hours of community service to namiss.com/CommunityInvolvement. As part of your documentation, you will need to upload a scanned letter of confirmation that you obtain from the organization’s manager. We want to see all the fun you had helping others! Remember to take pictures of yourself as you perform your community service and wear your banner. Crowns are now optional, even somewhat discouraged, when making public appearances and community service. We want the emphasis to be on serving, and sometimes crowns can get in the way of projecting that image of service. All entries will be considered for inclusion on the new NAM community service web pages, so please keep that in mind as you select your photos and materials to upload. NEW! All Community Involvement participants are automatically entered in the Golden Achievement in Service Award competition for FREE. See pages t and u, in the black & white forms section of this booklet, for more info about the Community Involvement project! 21 Choose a dress that will reflect your personality & style! Royal Blue, Purple, Fuchsia,Yellow = Energetic, Exciting, Animated & Extroverted White & Pastel Dresses = Approachable, Gentle, & Feminine Rules & Regulations Formal Dress Princess, Jr. Pre-Teen or Pre-Teen* The dress may be any length or style as long as it is age appropriate. Some examples include floor length, tea length, and knee length. Whatever style you choose, be certain that the fit and hem are proper for that style. Solid colors work best. No hats, gloves or trains (sweeps). No noticeable makeup. Shoes should be small heels or flats. Junior Teen, Teen & Miss A prom or formal dress that is age appropriate. Any length or style that is appropriate for your age and personality. No hats, gloves, bare midriffs or thigh-high slits. The hem does not have to be even, however, no long trains that drag behind the contestant are allowed. Small “sweeps” are fine. A sweep is a train that is no longer than 24 inches on the floor when the contestant is standing still. Shoes should complement the dress. Helpful Hints to Dress Your Best • It’s important that you look and feel your very best in the pageant. Remember you will do your best when you are in a dress that makes you feel like a winner. Wear a dress you are comfortable moving around in and one that makes you feel proud to be on stage. • Be true to yourself. Don’t try to be something that you are not. Whether you are athletic or outdoorsy, poetic or fancy, choose a dress that will reflect your personality and sense of style. • When you choose a color that you like for your dress keep in mind, “What does this color say about me and my personality?” There is not a perfect pageant dress color, so pick your personal favorite and a color that complements your eyes, hair, and skin tone. Most importantly, choose the color that makes you feel confident and special. *NOTE: When hemming a floor length dress for the Pre-Teen, Jr. Pre-Teen and/or Princess age divisions, your goal is to have an even hemline that is about 1/2 inch off the floor. Body piercings and tattoos, while becoming more socially acceptable, are not accepted as professional appearance and can have a negative impact on the way you present yourself. You should approach the competition as someone who is preparing for a professional job and let it be your guide for your actions, attire, and attitude. Point deductions may be made on an individual basis according to a judge’s attitude or opinion of tattoos and body piercings. We would encourage you to cover tattoos and/or remove extra body piercing jewelry for competition week at nationals. 23 Here is some great news about an exciting achievement award and trophy to be given out at the National Pageant! Bring two neatly printed or typed copies of your speech. • “My Most Admired American Woman” (cannot be family) • “My State” • “Why I Say NO to Drugs” • You may speak about your“platform” or a community service activity you enjoy. • “My Favorite American” (cannot be family) • “How We Can Make this World a Better Place” • “A Defining Moment in American History” 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 28 • “If I Were President for a Day” • Our pageant theme: “I am a girl with dreams” • “Why I Love this Country” • “What Friendship Means to Me” • “I’m Proud to Be an American” • “My Favorite Character Quality” (such as Truth, Honesty, Tolerance, Integrity or others) • Recite a poem that means something special to you. Here’s the Scoop You will enter the stage from the back. The emcee will introduce you to the audience, highlighting your interests and activities and introducing your topic. Upbeat music (provided by the pageant) will play as you are walking. You’ll pause at center stage and face the audience. You will model your Interview Outfit by doing a circle turn. You will proceed to the podium. When you arrive, our staff will have already placed your speech (which you turned in at pageant check-in) on the podium. You can refer to your printed speech as needed. When finished, smile and make eye contact with the judges and the audience as you exit stage right. Please see page ae in the forms supplement book for the Optionals Contests Payment/Sponsor List Card. Now, you can have talent entries! two $175 Fee per Entry. Limit 2 entries. Available to all age divisions. Each participant will receive a complimentary official rhinestone “Talent” pin. The winner will receive an $800 cash award, Official Crown, Banner and Trophy. The 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th runners-up will receive a trophy. Dress: Your own choice. The outfit should be appropriate for the type of talent and your age group. Be sure it does not make an inappropriate revealing statement. Rules: Length of performance – up to two minutes only. Timing begins when music starts or when performance begins, whichever is first. A bell will ring at two minutes; at that point the judging will end. Pageant Furnishes: Piano, cassette tape or CD player and operator, hand-held microphone and microphone in a stand or a headset microphone ($10 fee). Talent Permitted: Only live talent presentations will be permitted. The stage will be a minimum of 12’ x 40’. The typical stage dimension is 12’ x 48’. A dance floor of at least 12’ x 40’ will be on the surface of the stage. You Bring: Your accompanist, if needed, or two copies of your music (in case one breaks). CDs must be well labeled, identifying which track to play. Cassette tapes should be of good quality, cued to the right spot, and labeled as to which side is to be played. All CDs and tapes must have your name and age division written on them. Accompanist: The Talent contestant is the only person performing and is the only person on stage. All accompanists (piano, guitar, etc.) are to be located offstage. Piano is located in front of the stage on the floor. Instruments, other than piano, will be miked and located next to the stage. The only exception to being off-stage is if someone is assisting as a “still prop.” If you have a question about this, call the National Pageant office. Limit 4 entries. Available to all age divisions. Each participant will receive a complimentary official rhinestone “Photogenic” pin. The winner will receive an $800 cash award, Official Crown, Banner and Trophy. The 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th runners-up will receive a trophy. “Miss Photogenic” will be selected from the photograph(s) of the contestant which she will bring to Pageant Check-In. Each contestant may enter one to four photographs, and each photograph provides another opportunity to win! r 1 Try to select picture(s) that project a happy smile and reflect a positive personality. Pictures that show a toomature or demure look generally do not do well. 2 The appearance of make-up in the picture should be appropriate for your age. 3 If you are having trouble selecting one picture from several, show them to a few people who do not know the contestant; ask each person to rank the pictures from their most favorite on down. This will help you select the picture(s) to enter. 4 You may enter any size photo as long as it is not larger than 8”x10”, but the picture should not be so small that your face is difficult to see. 5 Bottom Line: You want to achieve “Personality in a Picture.” Pictures that convey excitement or emotion often do well. The photo(s) may be of any size (no longer than 8x10) and can be either black and white or color – both do equally well. Head shots generally work best. The pictures will be returned during the pageant after the judging has taken place. Only the picture(s) you submit for the competition will be judged, NOT your picture that appears in the program book. To enter the Photogenic Contest, just complete your Optional Contest Card for at least one and no more than four picture entries and send in your entry fees ($175 per picture). You may submit and pay for more entries on pageant weekend; however, you are still limited to four pictures total. Please see page ae in the forms supplement book for the Optional Contest Payment/Sponsor List Card.
